BOSTON (AP) — After nearly 16 years on the run and two years after his arrest on charges he played a role in 19 murders, James "Whitey" Bulger is about to face a jury.

A judge will hold a final pretrial conference on Monday afternoon before jury selection begins Tuesday in the trial of the reputed Boston mob boss.

Bulger, who is 83, fled in 1994 after being tipped off that he was about to be indicted. He was captured in Santa Monica, Calif., in June 2011.

Prosecutors plan to call mob figures, including Bulger's former partner, Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi, who is now serving a life sentence for 10 murders.

Jury selection begins for Boston mobster 'Whitey' Bulger
June 4, 2013

The ruthless Boston mobster who eluded the FBI for 12 years is now an 83-year-old defendant.

As jury selection gets underway Tuesday in the murder trial of legendary Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger, there is no bigger sign of the high-octane status of the case than the fact that the jurors will be referred to by number, not names.

U.S. District Judge Denise Casper, citing intense media attention, said Monday that "given the circumstances," the jurors' names will not be made public until after the panel renders a verdict. She indicated the trial could last as long as three months.

The panel will be drawn from a pool of 675 possible jurors who will be weeded out then questioned Tuesday and Wednesday.

While Bulger still generates tabloid excitement in Boston, he is no longer a ruthless, bigger-than-life crime boss deftly eluding authorities, but an 83-year-old man whose six-decades of crime appears to be finally catching up to him.

Bulger, who spent 12 years on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, faces 19 charges of murder, including the alleged strangulation in 1981 of Debra Davis because she was planning to break up with his partner, Steven "The Rifleman" Flemmi.
The brutal organized crime boss, who terrorized South Boston in the '70s and '80s as head of the Winter Hill Gang, is also accused of racketeering, extortion and weapons and money-laundering in a 33-count indictment.

After 16 years on the run with longtime girlfriend Catherine Greig, Bulger was captured in 2011 in Santa Monica, Calif. when a neighbor realized he was the infamous Irish mobster from Boston.

Greig was sentenced to 8 years in prison in 2012 after pleading guilty to a string of charges, including conspiracy to harbor a fugitive and identity fraud.

Bulger's wily image was burnished by a double game he was apparently playing with the FBI as an informant for almost two decades, keeping the feds at bay by providing information on a rival Italian American gang.

He fled Boston in 1994 after being tipped off by his former FBI handler, John Connelly.

But Bulger's hopes of being able to claim immunity for his alleged crimes because of his work for the FBI were dashed by Judge Casper who ruled that any purported immunity deal was "not a defense to the crimes charged."

Although Bulger is now a balding old man with a white beard, seemingly a relic of a bygone era, his trial should have plenty of juice.

Bulger defense seeks delay in opening statements
June 10, 2013

BOSTON (AP) — Defense attorneys for James "Whitey" Bulger have asked a judge to delay opening statements in his racketeering trial.

In a motion filed Monday, Bulger's lawyers asked for a stay of proceedings while they conduct their own investigation into a man expected to be a key witness against the reputed Boston mobster.

The defense says John Martorano, who admitted killing 20 people, has committed crimes since his release from federal prison and has been shielded from investigation by law enforcement.

Prosecutors have denied the allegations.

Defense lawyers are asking for documents and say the prosecution's refusal to turn them over is "inexcusable, inexplicable and unconstitutional."

Boston's top FBI official, who led marathon bombing probe, to retire
June 11, 2013

(Reuters) - The head of the FBI's Boston office, who has supervised high-profile investigations including the probe into April's Boston Marathon bombings, will retire next month after more than 26 years with the agency, the bureau said on Tuesday.

Special Agent in Charge Richard DesLauriers, originally from Longmeadow, Massachusetts, has helmed investigations such as the 2010 operation code-named Ghost Stories, in which 10 people were rounded up as suspected Russian spies.

He became best known across the United States following the April 15 marathon bombing as the agent who stepped forward to ask the public for help identifying the two men suspected of placing the twin pressure-cooker bombs at the marathon finish line.

It was not the first time DesLauriers successfully appealed to the public for help. Accused Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger was arrested with his girlfriend Catherine Greig in a seaside California apartment around two years ago after DesLauriers launched a media campaign focused on Greig that led to a tip.

Bulger's trial on charges including 19 murder counts opens Wednesday.

Opening statements in Bulger trial to begin
June 12, 2013

(NECN: Justin Michaels) - Wednesday is the beginning of the trial for accused South Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger, as it gets underway with opening statements later Wednesday morning.

The jury was seated yeTuesday after six days of trying to find the best candidates for this jury. It is made up of 18 people from eastern Massachusetts, 11 men and seven women.

Twelve jurors will actually decide on Bulger’s guilt or innocence. The remaining six are alternates.

Things got pretty heated in court Tuesday. Bulger's attorney, J. W. Carney, raised his voice and interrupted Judge Denise Casper while arguing for a delay in opening statements and for documents he says could prove that the Massachusetts State Police have shielded Bulger cohort, turned government witness John Martorano from prosecution for crimes he allegedly committed since his release from federal prison in 2007.

Judge Casper denied the defense’s motion late Tuesday.

The trial for Bulger starts Wednesday morning at 8:45 and is expected end sometime in September.

Bulger Is No Angel, but an Informant? Never, Jury Is Told
June 12, 2013

BOSTON — The lawyer for James (Whitey) Bulger, the reputed onetime Boston mob boss, told a packed courtroom Wednesday morning that his client was many things — bookmaker, drug dealer and loan shark who made “millions and millions” of dollars from his underworld dealings. But there was one thing he never was — an informer for the F.B.I.
“James Bulger is of Irish descent,” J. W. Carney Jr., the lawyer, declared in his opening argument. “And the worst thing an Irish person could consider doing is becoming an informant. That was the first and foremost reason why James Bulger was never an informant against people.”

There was a secondary reason, too, Mr. Carney said, also of a tribal nature. The F.B.I. was mainly interested in the Italian mafia, but Mr. Bulger could not have been of use, Mr. Carney said, because he did not know many Italian gangsters.

“James Bulger was not deeply tied to the Italian mafia,” he said. The Italians “wouldn’t let someone of that background be knowledgeable.”

In the litany of charges against Mr. Bulger, being an inside source for the law is not listed. But his lawyer’s declarations in court made clear that this is the most important misconception about him that Mr. Bulger wants to clear up.

Mr. Bulger’s day in court finally arrived Wednesday morning for the coda of his lifetime of crime — a major criminal trial in which his decades-long dominance of the South Boston underworld will be laid before the public. Mr. Bulger, whose first arrest occurred at age 13, is now 83.
Mr. Bulger sat at the defense table at the federal courthouse here wearing a Kelly green sweater tucked into bluejeans and sporting white sneakers. One of his younger brothers, Jackie, sat behind him. Across the courtroom, the benches were jammed with families of people whose deaths Mr. Bulger is accused of having had a hand in.

The government painted a less noble portrait of Mr. Bulger. In the prosecution’s view, he was “at the center” of a criminal enterprise that “ran amok in the city of Boston for almost 30 years.” And the prosecution made sure the jury understood that he had a role, often pulling the trigger, in 19 murders.

“He was no ordinary leader,” said Brian Kelly, the assistant United States attorney who made the government’s opening arguments. “He did the dirty work himself because he was a hands-on killer.”

Mr. Bulger is charged in a sweeping and complex 32-count indictment, and the prosecution needed diagrams and flow charts to try to explain his role in the crimes.

'Whitey' Bulger's Attorney: FBI Informant File on Boston Mobster Was Falsified
June 12, 2013

Notorious former Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger appeared in court Wednesday, listening to opening arguments in his trial for allegedly ordering or committing 19 murders in the 1970s and '80s.

Bulger's attorney opened by denying that his client ever worked with the FBI as an informant against Italian mob rivals – a key part of the popular narrative about Bulger's life of crime, which inspired the popular 2006 film "The Departed."

Carney said former FBI agent John Connolly fabricated details in his FBI informant file.

"Ask yourself, would an informant be paying tens of thousands of dollars to the agent, or would it be the other way around?" Carney said, alleging that Bulger was paying the FBI agent for information, not the other way around, the Boston Globe reports.

"He wanted to pay for information and received it from corrupt law enforcement officers," Carney said. "The reason Connolly created the file was just a cover-up for why he was being seen with Bulger so often."

Bulger spent 16 years on the run – and 12 years on the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted" list – before his June 2011 arrest in Santa Monica, Calif. Authorities say they found $822,000 and 30 guns inside the apartment that Bulger shared with his long-time girlfriend Catherine Greig
Greig pleaded guilty last year to conspiring to harbor a fugitive and identity theft charges, and is serving an eight-year sentence.

Connolly, the former FBI agent, was convicted in 2002 of racketeering and obstruction of justice charges for, among other things, tipping Bulger off about his impending arrest. A Florida jury also convicted Connolly of second-degree murder in 2009 for providing Bulger with information that led to the 1982 murder of a possible witness.

Connolly is now serving a 40-year sentence for the murder conviction, but maintains his innocence. "The Justice Department is going to do everything within its power to try to make sure the full story never comes out," he told The Daily Beast last year in an interview.

Trial of ‘Whitey’ Bulger returns to evidence of murders
6-20-13

BOSTON — The trial of James “Whitey” Bulger on Thursday turns back to evidence of the 19 murders the alleged mob boss is accused of committing or ordering while he ran the ruthless Winter Hill crime gang in the 1970s and ’80s.

Family members of some of Bulger’s alleged victims may take the stand to identify photos of their murdered relatives.

Three days of testimony from star witness John Martorano — the first of Bulger’s former lieutenants to take the stand — included chilling details of hits the now 72-year-old confessed killer described carrying out with Bulger.

Bulger, portrayed by his attorneys as a mild-mannered loan shark, extortionist and drug dealer but not a murderer, has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Now 83, he faces life in prison if convicted.

Bulger trial witness: I lived to tell tale of Russian roulette-style drama
July 17, 2013

Boston (CNN) -- Former drug smuggler William David Lindholm has a harrowing tale of how reputed Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger allegedly tried to extort $1 million by having a bullet fired past Lindholm's head.
In the end, Lindholm lived to testify Wednesday at Bulger's federal trial about surviving a high-stakes, Russian roulette-style game.
Bulger is charged in the deaths of 19 people during some two decades when prosecutors say he terrorized South Boston as the head of the Irish mob. He also faces charges of extortion, racketeering and money laundering. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Prosecutors allege Bulger shook down more than a dozen criminals and made them pay "rent" -- cash for permission to carry on with their business on the streets of Boston.

Lindholm, who is in the witness protection program, is testifying on a compulsion order under grounds of immunity. He was convicted of drug and tax evasion charges and joins the laundry list of government witnesses who served a lesser sentence after agreeing to cooperate.

'Whitey' Bulger Strangled My Girlfriend, Ex-Partner Testified
July 18, 2013

James "Whitey" Bulger's former pal told a federal court today that he brought his girlfriend to a house so Bulger could strangle her because she knew about corrupt FBI agents who were helping the alleged Boston mob boss.

"He really wanted to kill her," Stephen "the Rifleman" Flemmi told the court.

"Did you agree with that?" asked federal prosecutor Fred Wyshak.

"Not at first,'' Flemmi, 79, answered. "But then he gave me a litany of reasons."

Those reasons, Flemmi told the court, centered on what Debbie Davis – a young, pretty blonde who he began dating when she was 17 – knew about the relationship he and Bulger had with rogue FBI agents.
