Elaina Steinfurth Updates: What Happened With DNA Test For Missing Ohio Toddler? Family And Community Pray As Mom Angela Waits In Jail [REPORT]
By Beth Roeser July 15, 2013 6:02 PM EDT

Elaina Steinfurth's family is still hoping for a breakthrough in the search for the missing toddler who disappeared from a Toledo, Ohio home on June 2. The community has rallied around the Steinfurth family since the 18-month-old's mother claimed she vanished after being put down for a nap, and search efforts continue even as each passing day darkens hopes that evidence will be recovered.

The disappearance of Baby Elaina, as she has been dubbed by the media and community organizers, has cast a cloud of suspicion over her mother Angela Steinfurth and several other characters in her orbit. Angela is currently in jail on obstruction charges after reportedly giving false information to police during the investigation of Elaina's disappearance. She had previously been arrested for child endangering after confessing to police that Elaina Steinfurth had suffered a still unspecified "serious injury" for which she did not receive medical treatment.

Police search of Maumee River for tot finds nothing
Tests to examine hair for possible DNA

Another search of the Mau-mee River for missing 18-month-old Elaina Steinfurth, who was last reported seen at an East Toledo home June 2, came up empty Wednesday.

The Toledo Fire and Rescue Department’s dive team and U.S. Coast Guard were searching after test results from the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation came back saying that hair snagged by a fisherman’s line over the weekend was human, Toledo police Sgt. Joe Heffernan said. If DNA can be extracted, forensic specialists might be able to make a match.

Thanks Darla, maybe someone finally talked?  If it was one that was responsible I hope they didn't get too sweet of a deal for the information!

From the video "new information" led authorities to an alley behind 704 Federal.  Some family members reported seeing authorities come out with a box covered with a tarp, and baby Elaina's father was told to go downtown.  He came back to the scene later.

News conference in the morning at 10:30.

TPD press conference to address new search in Baby Elaina case on Friday
by Angi Gonzalez
Posted: 09.05.2013 at 5:45 PM

Toledo Police said on Thursday that the department received new information regarding the disappearance of east Toledo toddler, Elaina Steinfurth.

According to a TPD press release, "At 3:16 p.m., September 5th, Toledo Police Detectives executed a search warrant based on new information at 704 Federal".

The property is the home where baby Elaina was last seen on June 2, and is the home where Elaina's mother's ex-boyfriend, Steven King, was living before he was arrested in the case.

King and Elaina's mother, Angela Steinfurth are both facing charges of obstruction of justice in Elaina's disappearance.

King appeared in court on the charge Thursday morning and according to sources was then taken to Toledo Police Headquarters to be interviewed by detectives.

Sources say that King was with detectives for most of the afternoon.

At this time, it is unclear if King provided the "new information" that Toledo Police say lead to the most recent search at King's former residence.

Toledo Police say they will not discuss the results of the latest search until Friday morning at a 10:30 a.m. press conference.

In addition, sources at the scene say that police brought a box out of King's home that was covered with a tarp.

Police have not said what was in the box or revealed where it was taken.

I sure hope he didn't get a sweet deal. Somebody needs to start really slapping some serious consequences on these folks for harming kids. It seems like it get worse everyday.

Suspected human remains were found Thursday in a computer box, stored in a detached garage on the property where missing toddler Elaina Steinfurth was last seen about three months ago.

“We have received a box that appears to contain human remains,” said Dr. James Patrick, Lucas County Coroner.

I wonder if we'll be hearing one of the following excuses for Elaina's death from her murderer/murderers, such as she wouldn't stop crying and one of adults was hungover and they were annoyed, or perhaps she peed in the bed or pooed her diaper and someone got angry or irritated?

I hope with the recovery of little Elaina's body, there's enough forensic evidence for the person/persons responsible for her death to be punished to the maximum extent.

Rest in peace Elaina.   an angelic monkey

Police defend search for missing toddler
Elaina Steinfurth's grandfather says box not initially in garage
BLADE STAFF

Toledo Police believe human remains found Thursday in an East Toledo garage may be missing toddler Elaina Steinfurth.

"We had a lot of deception taking place being told to us by a variety of sources in the community," Toledo Police Chief Derrick Diggs said during a news conference today. "The bottom line is we found what we believe may be Baby Elaina."

The Toledo Police Department and others today held the news conference to discuss new breaks in the case of the missing baby, who was last seen at 704 Federal St. about three months ago. Police found a computer box containing the suspected human remains in a detached garage at that address Thursday.

Authorities today said the box contained immature skeletal remains.

RELATED ARTICLE: Suspected human remains seized from site where tot lived

Police officials said that the garage had been searched soon after the baby went missing, but that it was initially searched for a missing child. Ultimately, Chief Diggs said, what was important was that police found the baby.

He refuted a question when asked whether police dropped the ball while searching the Federal Street property for the child.

"We didn't drop the ball," he said.

Rob Miller, chief of the special units division for the Lucas County Prosecutor's Office, said today that depending on the outcome of an autopsy, he would anticipate presenting the case to a Lucas County grand jury next week.

"We're hoping to know the cause of death after the autopsy, which should occur today," Mr. Miller said.

A representative of the Lucas County Coroner's office said coroners will be conducting the autopsy today, but did not release a time frame for its completion or a release of results.

A DNA comparison would likely be used to positively confirm the child's identity, which could take two to eight weeks, Mr. Miller said, adding that prosecutors would not wait that long to present the case to a grand jury.

"Depending on the evidence, we would evaluate whether [the indictment] would be against one or both of them," he said, referring to the girl's mother, Angela Steinfurth, and her then-boyfriend, Steven King II.

Chief Diggs said during the news conference that the state Bureau of Criminal Investigations will work over the weekend to try and determine the identity of the remains. He said that the investigation is still ongoing, and there were many details of the case he could not discuss.

Police officials said that the box containing the remains was in the rafters of the garage with other boxes.

Angela Steinfurth's stepfather, Richard Schiewe, does not believe the remains found on Federal Street were there the entire time that Elaina has been missing.

Mr. Schiewe said he was with police on June 3 searching through the garage; the computer box where the skeletal remains were found was not there, he said after the Toledo Police Department's news conference today.

“That body was not in the rafters the day after Elaina came up missing,” Mr. Schiewe said. “I was in the garage with police … I searched the garage. All that was in that garage was junk bicycle parts, plumbing parts, electrical parts, and two turtles, and a bunch of musted-up boxes.

“That body was not in that garage.”

Mr. Schiewe said he believes someone told someone else where the toddler's body was being kept and then put the body in the box and tucked it onto a shelf on the rafters.
