Police investigating case of missing East Toledo girl
Published: 6/3/2013 - Updated: 4 days ago

Toledo police are looking for a 1½-year-old girl who is missing from an East Toledo residence.

Elaina Steinfurth was allegedly last seen Sunday at a residence in the 700 block of Federal Street where her mother -- Angela Steinfurth -- was staying for the night, police said in a report filed about 10 p.m. Sunday.

Police responding to a call of a missing child arrived at the residence about 3 p.m. and were told that Terry Steinfurth, the girl's father, had gone to the address to pick up his two daughters, a 4-year-old and a 1 1/2-year-old, but was allowed access to the 4-year-old only, police said.

Police said Mr. Steinfurth then left and picked up his father to be a go-between to keep things peaceful, with Ms. Steinfurth finally agreeing to allow him to have Elaina.

Ms. Steinfurth, police said, then went inside for 20 to 25 minutes only to come back stating that Elaina had been sleeping in the front bedroom but was now missing. The woman's live-in boyfriend, Steven King, Jr., had gone out of the back door, supposedly to look for the girl, police said.

Day 7: Still no sign of missing Elaina as crews expand search
Posted: Jun 02, 2013 2:35 PM PST Updated: Jun 08, 2013 6:55 AM PST

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Crews last week focused their search for missing 1-year-old Elaina Steinfurth along the Maumee River. Water rescuers, divers, and police headed back to the High Level Bridge to look for clues about the little girl's whereabouts. They combed the wooded areas below the bridge as well as the water using sonar equipment to detect anything below the surface. Elaina Steinfurth has been missing since Sunday, June 2nd, when her family reported her missing during a custody hand-off.

On Thursday, police searched wooded areas along the base of the High Level Bridge in Toledo.

Police investigating missing child case

A toddler in East Toledo was still unaccounted for Monday night.  Police are trying to put the whole story together and find 18-month-old- Elaina Steinfurth.

Steinfurth and her sister were supposed to be given to their father, Terry, on Sunday afternoon in the 700 block of Federal. The mother turned over one child but after going back to get the second, she says the baby disappeared.  The mother, Angela Steinfurth, is now pointing to her boyfriend being responsible for the baby's disappearance.  His family is denying any involvement.

Now each side is pointing fingers, while the baby is still missing.

Elaina Steinfurth was last seen wearing orange shorts. The mother says, when she got back from the police department Monday morning, the shorts and the baby's medicine were both found in the home on Federal.

Friends and family members went through East Toledo neighborhoods looking for the baby Monday. They also held a prayer circle to pray for her safe return.

Both Angela and her boyfriend were at Toledo's Safety Building talking with police throughout Monday.

Angela Steinfurth then told police (after the father called them; Not the mother), that the child was last seen in orange floral shorts. Those shorts were reportedly found in the home -- so now there is no description of what the infant could be wearing.

It's really not clear if this child was truly kidnapped or if something happened to her in the home. What hasn't been made certain is whether or not FBI agents or other officials have used cadaver dogs in the search for her. In missing persons cases like these, the use of dogs and other in depth search tactics is effective. In the meantime, it would be interesting to learn if the mother and her boyfriend have agreed to polygraph tests.

Day 8: Still no sign of missing Elaina as police suspend search for the day

The children had been with their mother, Angela, and her boyfriend Steven King. Terry says Angela had taken the girls to the home, belonging to Steven's mother, Julie King.

"She told me she was staying at her father's house," Terry explained, but that wasn't the case. "I went to pick them up Sunday…they told me she was back over [at Julie King's house], where she promised me they weren't going to be."

According to Julie, Angela called Saturday evening, asking if she and the girls could stay at Julie's for the night. Julie tells WTOL 11, Angela claimed they had no place else to go.

"I believed everything she told me, I thought she didn't have a place to stay," Julie said. "She lied to us."

Julie says she allowed them to stay the night, but says she didn't see baby Elaina all day Sunday.

Steinfurth Sr. says when he showed up, Angela told him the baby [Elaina] was napping, and she didn't want to wake her.

"I heard [Angela] inside, [crying and screaming], ‘I don't wanna give him my baby, I'll never see her again,'" he said. Eventually they talked her into letting them see the baby. "Twenty minutes later, she comes running out, [saying,] ‘The baby's not in the house, the baby's gone.'"

Steinfurth, Sr. says he and his son wanted to call the police and others to look for the child, but Angela sat down on the porch "like nothing was wrong…no tears, no nothing."

Search continues for Elaina Steinfurth
Published: 6/9/2013

Nearly 60 people in white shirts with the words "Search Team" and "Bring Elaina Home" written on them met near the former Eastside Central School at noon Sunday to organize search parties for Elaina Steinfurth.

The site at Leonard and Berry streets, just a few houses away from the home at which the missing 18-month-old was last seen a week ago, was the base location for Steinfurth family, family friends, and members of the community to meet and break up into search teams.

Angela Steinfurth was not present at the search today.

Day 9: Citizen searchers take up search for missing Elaina Steinfurth

By WTOL Staff - email

Police got involved in the young girl's disappearance Sunday afternoon when Elaina's father, Terry Steinfurth, showed up at a home in east Toledo to pick up the girl and her older sister.

When Terry came to pick up his daughters, he says Angela allowed their oldest to go with him, but refused to let him see Elaina. He says he persisted, and she refused.

That's when he says the children's grandfather, Terry Steinfurth Sr., arrived on scene. He says he wanted to help Terry Jr. get Elaina when Angela wouldn't give her up. Steinfurth Sr. says when he showed up, Angela told him the baby [Elaina] was napping, and she didn't want to wake her
"I heard [Angela] inside, [crying and screaming], ‘I don't wanna give him my baby, I'll never see her again,'" he said.

Julie says when Angela announced the baby was gone, she and her son, Steven, immediately went out the back door to begin looking in the pool, the garage, and nearby.

The search at 660 Federal St. started at about 5 p.m. today, said Police Lt. Dan Gerken, who is at the scene. A canine from the Geauga County Sheriff's Office is involved in the search.

The home has been vacant for years, according to authorities. The residence is owned by Gerald and Doris Apthorpe, according to the Lucas County Auditor's Office.

Earlier today, police announced that they were offering a $10,000 cash reward to anyone who can provide information that leads to the whereabouts of little Elaina.

Cadaver dog sent to neighborhood where missing toddler was last seen
Posted: 9 mins ago

EAST TOLEDO -- The Geauga County Sheriff's Office tells WNWO that they have sent a cadaver dog to Toledo to help police with an active investigation.

The home is not the address where 18-month-old Elaina Steinfurth was last seen but is on the same street.

The paper reports the home belongs to a family member of the Steinfurth's.

Mom arraigned as East Toledo search for Elaina continues
Published: 6/14/2013 - Updated: 3 minutes ago

Police allege Mrs. Steinfurth, 26, of 329 Valleywood Dr. knew her daughter was seriously injured and required medical treatment, but never took the toddler for help. Court records indicate the injuries occurred “on or about June 2,” the day the tot went missing.

Mr. Schiewe said Mrs. Steinfurth told him her boyfriend, Steven King II, dropped the girl. She reportedly told her stepfather she does not know where the girl is.

“The condition of the baby and the severity of the injuries, I can’t tell ya,” Toledo police Capt. Wes Bombrys said during a news conference Thursday. “We don’t know. The location of Elaina, we still don’t know, and that’s why we say it’s still an ongoing investigation.”

That same day, Mrs. Steinfurth said she was frustrated about news stories with online commenters accusing her of being involved in the disappearance. “If I had something to do with it, why would I be here?” she asked.

- I snipped it but wanted to mention Richard Schiewe (quoted) is Angela's stepfather.
