Authorities provide security for juror in Jodi Arias case
11:10 a.m. EST March 7, 2015

PHOENIX (AP) — Authorities were providing security Friday for the sole juror who voted to spare the life of convicted murderer Jodi Arias.

No threats had been reported against any of the 12 jurors, authorities said. However, the lone holdout on the death penalty had requested the security after her name was posted on social media.

Prosecutors also said they're examining whether the holdout disclosed that her husband had been prosecuted by the same county attorney who headed the case against Arias.

The name of the holdout juror in the sentencing retrial was leaked through a Twitter account that also posted sympathetic comments about Arias' victim. The juror could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, a pro-Arias website published names of 11 people it said were the jurors who voted to sentence Arias to death for the 2008 killing.

A mistrial was declared Thursday and a judge will sentence Arias on April 13 to life in prison or life with the possibility of parole after 25 years.

Arizona law prohibits the public release of juror names. It's unknown how the identities were leaked, but information appeared online after jurors who favored the death penalty expressed frustrations over the holdout.

A hung jury eliminated the death penalty for Jodi Arias, placing a life sentence in the hands of the judge this week.

Jurors 8, 4 and 18 spoke out exclusively to ABC regarding sentencing and the lone juror who held out against the death penalty.

All three jurors who spoke out agreed that they flip-flopped throughout the case on whether Arias should receive life in prison or a death sentence, but that the decision was clearer during deliberation. They said at the beginning, the jury was split 6-6 on the death penalty.

This is why it is called deliberation -- you have an opinion and then you have the opportunity to discuss.  Having an open mind is what it is suppose to be about.  I am so sad about this.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio bans Jodi Arias' top 10 video visitors citing violations

PHOENIX - Ten of Jodi Arias' most frequent visitors have been banned from video chatting with her.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said the visitors have broken several of the jail's rules, such as taking photos with their cell phones and using false names and other people's accounts to gain access to her.

Arpaio said these visitors are also the people responsible for maintaining the convicted killer's social media presence, despite her being behind bars and not having Internet access.

The Arizona Sheriff has been critical of Arias' "thirst for adoration and attention." After a second jury deadlocked on her punished for the killing of Travis Alexander, Arpaio banned Arias from speaking to the media.

"Arias is a convicted killer, and her 15 minutes of fame are over,” he said last week.

Judge reveals behind-the-scene wrangling in jury room as Jodi Arias' fate hung in the balance
Published March 10, 2015

PHOENIX –  As the jury in the Jodi Arias trial reached an impasse last week, prosecutors and fellow jurors attempted to remove a holdout on the panel who was the only obstacle in the way of securing a death sentence against the convicted murderer.

A court document released Tuesday by the judge in the case reveals the behind-the-scenes wrangling in the jury room as Arias' fate hung in the balance.

Jurors had questioned the holdout's objectivity because she had previously watched a Lifetime movie about the Arias case, and prosecutors were upset at the juror's social media activity as she went on Facebook and "liked" several local TV stations and Nancy Grace of the HLN network. The juror said her views were being ignored by the 11 jurors who wanted Arias to be executed for murdering boyfriend Travis Alexander nearly seven years ago.

"My opinion isn't being heard," the judge quoted the holdout as saying.

A court on Tuesday also announced it was launching an internal investigation into how the identities of Arias jurors were revealed online just hours after the trial ended. Arizona law prohibits the public release of a juror's identity, though many of the Arias panel members agreed to speak with reporters after the trial ended.

Does this seem a little self serving on the part of the sheriff?  His name mentioned in the 'headline' and written six times in the short release, plus his smiling mug used as an image in the background.

No mention of why Arias had such liberal communication with the outside world to begin with after slaughtering an innocent young man in the cruelest of ways and having already been convicted of that.  No mention of the two young girls whom she seemed to be grooming and who Arpaio did not protect by allowing a convicted and brutal murderer with a personality disorder to have such liberal communication.

I'm glad the sheriff is finally treating Jodi with the strict rules she should be living under and I hope he continues to do so.  We don't want her harming any other people.  He needs to keep her evil away from the outside world and locked behind metal and concrete.

My highlighting on the document above.
I wonder why just 42 days? Anyway, I assume she will be in Perryville before those 42 days are up. I do hope she will have no access to the outside world via computers when she is there. Evil and vile she is.

Inmate Visits Go Digital In Maricopa County
By  Stina Sieg
November 24, 2014
http://kjzz.org/content/70350/inmate-visits-go-digital-maricopa-county

The way people visit inmates has gotten a digital makeover at Maricopa County jails. Gone are the days of meeting in person, replaced by the largest inmate video chat system in the country. It can even be used from home for a price. It’s convenient, but it raises questions, like just how personal it feels to visit through a screen.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio was trying out the system the other day at Phoenix’s Lower Buckeye Jail. He was sitting in a small plastic chair and chatting to a woman in Mexico on the other end of a video screen. At this official unveiling, Arpaio said this Skype-like system will help inmates’ loved ones who live far away. Before this, many of the county jails required video visitation – but it was a closed system. Visitors had to be at the jail to use it.

“They’re going to get on an airplane to come down here?” Arpaio asked. “No! So, I think it’s a good program. I’m doing it for the families.”

And, it could be argued, for the fees. Dallas-based Securus Technologies paid for the system’s installation. And it will collect all the fees until 8,000 calls are made each month. Then, the sheriff’s office will get 10 percent of the money. That number will double once the company’s $2.5 million investment is paid off.

But what does that mean for families? The answer is $12.95 – for each 20-minute video call, with a promotional price until the end of the year. The money is designated for an inmate fund, meant to benefit people like Dareon Reese. The same afternoon, he was sitting deep inside the jail in what looked like a phone booth make of cement blocks, and waiting to make his second-ever video call to his fiancée and three kids.

Found this article from last November with info about Maricopa jail's video chats. Does not mention how often an inmate is allowed these.

Article states that "state prison, which does not do video chat"

I believe that they allow the video chat in jails because generally, those in jails are awaiting trial and not yet convicted. Seems to me, those convicted and awaiting sentencing in jail should not be allowed video chats at all, except for legal purposes.

Sheriff: Jodi Arias punished after violating jail rules

HOENIX - Convicted murderer Jodi Arias will have to go without phone calls and video chats in jail for now unless they have to do with legal matters, the Maricopa County sheriff said Thursday.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said that Arias violated several rules, and the jail will enforce disciplinary restrictions for six weeks. According to Arpaio, there was evidence that Arias was trying to avoid having conversations monitored by using other inmates to make phone calls for her. She also is accused of speaking with minors through the jail's video visitation system.

"Arias needs to understand that while she is in my jail, she is to obey all the rules and breaking them has consequences," Arpaio said in a news release.
Other suspended privileges include being able to order commissary items. According to the sheriff, Arias sometimes spends around $100 in a week on candy and other food items. But for now, she will have to stick to the two vegetarian meals served daily by the jail.

Earlier in the week, Arpaio also banned 10 of Arias' visitors, including two 15-year-olds. All of them were found to have violated rules for visits, Arpaio said. Some used cellphones to take photos, and others used false names to gain access to Arias.
