Hepatitis A Outbreak Linked To Townsend Farms Frozen Berries From Costco
5/31/13

DENVER (CBS4)- Some 30 cases of hepatitis A have been reported in Colorado and four other states that have been linked to frozen mixed berries purchased from Costco.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is investigating along with the Centers for Disease Control and Food and Drug Administration in an outbreak of hepatitis A cases believed to be associated with Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend of frozen berries.

The first people became ill on April 29 and the most recent on May 21. Five of these cases are Colorado residents. The number of cases in Colorado and in this outbreak may change, because on average it takes 30 days to become ill with hepatitis A after eating contaminated food.

Victims of Hepatitis A outbreak may not show signs for a month
June 1, 2013

SAN DIEGO — It will take 30 days for hepatitis A to show up in the unlucky people who will get infected by a particular Costco frozen berry blend sold in San Diego County, and people who consumed the product were urged today to seek medical help.

Two county residents have been diagnosed with hepatitis A, and are part of a five-state outbreak believed to be linked to a frozen berry blend sold in Costco stores, county health officials said.

At least 30 cases of hepatitis A were reported nationwide, six of which were in California, including patients in San Diego, Orange and Riverside counties. Health officials warned consumers not to eat Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend frozen berries sold at Costco, which all six California patients ate.

The number of local cases may increase, Dr. Eric McDonald, the county’s deputy public health officer said.

“If you ate Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend frozen berries within the past two weeks and you have never been vaccinated for hepatitis A or had the disease, you should contact your health care provider to discuss hepatitis A vaccine or immune globulin,” he said.

Those who purchased the frozen berry blend should discard the product, McDonald said.

The county’s Tom Christensen said it takes about 30 days to become ill with hepatitis A after being exposed, so the number of cases in San Diego County could grow. Those without a health care provider should call the county’s Epidemiology Program at (619) 692-8499.

Hepatitis A outbreak tied to frozen berries grows to 87
June 11, 2013
The CDC reports illnesses in Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Washington.

WASHINGTON — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says an outbreak of hepatitis A linked to a frozen berry mix sold at Costco has grown to 87 people with illnesses in eight states.

The CDC said Tuesday that illnesses have been reported in Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Washington.

Townsend Farms of Fairview, Ore., last week recalled its frozen Organic Antioxidant Blend, packaged under the Townsend Farms label at Costco and under the Harris Teeter brand at those stores. So far the illnesses have only been linked to the berries sold at Costco.

Craig Wilson, director of food safety at Costco, said the store is providing vaccinations for people who ate the berries within the last two weeks and is reimbursing others who have gotten the vaccine outside the store. The store has contacted about 240,000 people who purchased the berries at one of their stores, Wilson said. The company knows who bought the berries because purchases are linked to a membership card that customers present when they check out.

The Food and Drug Administration is investigating the cause of the outbreak. The CDC said the strain of hepatitis is rarely seen in North or South America but is found in the North Africa and Middle East regions. Townsend Farms has said the frozen organic blend bag includes pomegranate seeds from Turkey.
