Hernandez’s girlfriend indicted over murder case
September 27, 2013
FALL RIVER, Mass. — The girlfriend of former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez has been indicted on a perjury charge in connection with the killing of his friend.
A Massachusetts prosecutor said Friday that a grand jury indicted Shayanna Jenkins on a single count in relation to the investigation into the June 17 killing of the friend, Odin Lloyd. The prosecutor says Hernandez’s cousin, Tanya Singleton, also was indicted on a new charge of conspiracy to commit accessory after the fact.
Earlier Friday, a grand jury also indicted a second Hernandez associate, Carlos Ortiz, on a accessory to murder charge in connection with the Lloyd killing. Until now, Ortiz had been facing only a gun charge in connection with the case. He pleaded not guilty to that charge.

Girlfriend of ex-Patriot Hernandez due in court
November 6, 2013
FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) — The girlfriend of Aaron Hernandez has another scheduled court appearance after being charged with perjury in connection with the murder case against the former New England Patriot.
A hearing for Shayanna Jenkins is set for Wednesday afternoon in Fall River Superior Court. She pleaded not guilty last month and was released on personal recognizance.
Prosecutors allege Jenkins lied to the grand jury that indicted Hernandez, including about disposing of evidence at his request. They say she told grand jurors she couldn't remember where she threw out a box she placed in a trash bag along with baby clothes.
Jenkins' attorney, Janice Bassil, says prosecutors are being heavy-handed and have no evidence her client lied.

Aaron Hernandez News: Current NFL Player Asked To Testify, Former Patriots Star Could Face Gun Trafficking Charges
October 31, 2013
Aaron Hernandez has been in jail for four months as he faces murder chargers for the death of Odin Lloyd. Now, the grand jury that indicted the former NFL star is investigating him for gun trafficking.
According to CNN, Hernandez is suspected of being involved in the illegal transportation of weapons across state lines. The report states that authorities found an assault rifle in a car in Massachusetts that is connected to the investigation.
As the grand jury looks into Hernandez’s potential involvement in gun trafficking, one of the ex-tight end’s college teammates has been hit with a subpoena. Miami Dolphins center Mike Pouncey was served on Sunday after the team’s game in New England, according to Sports Illustrated. Pouncey was met by Massachusetts State Police as he headed towards the team bus.
Pouncey isn’t expected to face any charges in the case, but to just speak with the grand jury. He is good friends with Hernandez, who he played with at the University of Florida. Pouncey and his brother Maurkice, who plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers, were photographed wearing hats that read “Free Hernandez” in July.
The Dolphins have refused to comment on the situation, as have the Steelers. On Sunday, Pittsburgh will be in New England to play the Patriots.
While Pouncey may not face chargers, several associates of Hernandez have been indicted in relation to the murder of Lloyd. Hernandez’s fiancée has been charged with perjury, and his cousin has pleaded not guilty to criminal contempt and being an accessory to murder after the fact. Hernandez’s friends Ernest Wallace and Carlos Ortiz have been charged with being accessories to murder, after they were allegedly with Hernandez on the night that Lloyd died.

Aaron Hernandez pleads Fifth for lawsuit alleging he shot friend in face
By Jeff Black, Staff Writer, NBC News
Aaron Hernandez won’t respond to accusations that he shot a friend in the face after a night out at a Miami strip club, his lawyers said in court papers filed Wednesday.
“Defendant asserts his rights under the Fifth Amendment and, therefore, declines to respond to the allegations,” lawyers wrote in a court filing.
The lawyers made the Fifth Amendment assertion 13 times in response to specific allegations contained in Bradley’s civil lawsuit. The lawsuit seeks $100,000 in damages for Hernandez's alleged negligence in handling the weapon.
Hernandez, 24, is being held without bail in Massachusetts after being charged with first-degree murder in the killing of his 27-year-old former friend Odin Lloyd on June 17.
Four other people — including Hernandez's fiancé — face charges stemming from that case.
U.S. District Court Judge Kathleen Williams, who is hearing the civil case, denied Hernandez's request to delay the proceedings until the murder charges are resolved.
The New England Patriots released Hernandez shortly after he was accused in Lloyd’s death.

WARRANT: AARON HERNANDEZ EYED AS GUNMAN IN 2012 SLAYINGS
January 16, 2014
BRISTOL, Conn. - A newly released search warrant indicates that Boston police have been investigating whether former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez may have been the gunman in a 2012 double slaying.
No charges have been filed in the shooting deaths of Daniel Jorge Correia de Abreu, 29, and Safiro Teixeira Furtado, 28, in Boston’s South End. The two were gunned down July 16, 2012 as they sat at a traffic light shortly after leaving a Boston nightclub.
Hernandez has come under scrutiny in the case since his arrest in a separate murder case in which he has pleaded not guilty.
Boston police write in the June 28 affidavit there is probable cause to believe that Hernandez was driving a vehicle used in the shooting and “may have been the shooter.”
The affidavit was released Thursday in Connecticut. It was filed as police sought to search an SUV they say was involved in the 2012 shooting and was found at Hernandez’s uncle’s home in Bristol, Conn.
The 24-year-old Hernandez is already facing murder charges in the June 17, 2013 death of 27-year-old Boston semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, who was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee. Hernandez is being held without bail.

Hartford Police: Charges expected to be filed against man suing Hernandez
February 3, 2014
(NECN) – The man suing Aaron Hernandez over an incident in Florida has been shot multiple times in Hartford, Conn.
Police confirm that Alexander Bradley was shot multiple times in his thigh during a gunfight at Club Vevo in Hartford late Sunday night.
Hartford Police said on arrival there was a car fleeing the scene. When the car was pulled over, Bradley fell out of the car with multiple gunshots in his right thigh. He was transported to a hospital.
Officers believe an altercation happened in the bar and moved outside.
Police said video indicates Bradley went to his vehicle, got a firearm and shot the front end of the bar. The incident is under investigation and charges are expected to be filed.
Bradley is a major player in the ongoing investigation into Hernandez.
Last year, Bradley filed a lawsuit claiming that Hernandez shot him in the face outside a Miami strip club.
According to recently released documents, Bradley may also have information about a double murder from Boston in 2012.

Sheriff: Hernandez involved in jail altercation
Posted February 25, 2014, Updated February 26, 2014
DARTMOUTH, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts sheriff says former NFL star Aaron Hernandez has been involved in a jail altercation.
Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson says the former New England Patriots tight end had an altercation with another inmate at the Bristol County House of Corrections on Tuesday.
Hodgson says jail staff are interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance video to figure out exactly what happened and determine whether charges are warranted.
A jail spokesman says neither inmate was seriously injured.
Hernandez is being held in a segregated housing unit with only a few other inmates.

2 Aaron Hernandez associates indicted on murder charges
April 11, 2014
FALL RIVER, Mass. – Two associates of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez have been indicted on murder charges in connection with the shooting of a man last summer near Hernandez's Massachusetts home.
The Bristol County district attorney's office said Friday a grand jury returned indictments against Carlos Ortiz and Ernest Wallace in connection with the killing of semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd.
Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to murder in the June killing of Lloyd, a Boston man who was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee.
The district attorney's office says Ortiz and Wallace will be arraigned later.

Prosecutor: Hernandez Was Gunman in Double Killing
May 15, 2014
Prosecutors say former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez, who already faces a murder charge in a man's shooting death last year, was also the gunman in an unrelated 2012 double slaying in Boston.
The victims in that killing, Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, were shot to death as they sat in a car in Boston. Police have said they were shot by someone who drove up alongside in an SUV and opened fire.
Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said at a news conference Thursday announcing that Hernandez has been indicted that the victims were "ambushed and executed" as they drove home and that Hernandez was the gunman.
Conley says Hernandez and the victims had had an encounter in a club that night.

Lawsuit seeks to block New England Patriots from paying Hernandez bonus if he wins appeal
June 19, 2014
BOSTON – An attorney in a wrongful-death lawsuit against former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez wants to keep the team from paying him a $3.25 million contract signing bonus if he wins a union appeal.
Attorney William Kennedy added the Patriots and the team owner's company Kraft Enterprises LLC as co-defendants in a $6 million lawsuit for the estates of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, whom Hernandez is accused of killing, the Boston Herald reported Thursday (
http://bit.ly/1iMxSHG
).
Prosecutors say Hernandez ambushed and gunned down the men after a chance encounter inside a nightclub weeks before he signed a five-year, $40 million contract and went on to catch 51 passes and score five touchdowns during the 2012 NFL season. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty in the men's slayings.
Kennedy also seeks to freeze Hernandez's assets, which his attorneys oppose. A Patriots spokesman declined to comment.
Similar steps were taken in a lawsuit by the family of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, whose body was found in an industrial area near Hernandez's home in North Attleborough and whom Hernandez denied killing in 2013. The Patriots have agreed in that case to notify the court before paying Hernandez.
The Patriots released Hernandez after his arrest in the Lloyd case last year.
De Abreu and Furtado were close friends who attended school and served in the military together in Cape Verde before coming to the United States, Kennedy said. After they left the Cure Lounge nightclub, Hernandez followed in an SUV, pulled out a gun and shot them at a red light, prosecutors said.
The case remained unsolved for months, but following Lloyd's killing the SUV was found in Bristol, Connecticut, where Hernandez grew up, and the gun was recovered from a person with ties to Hernandez, prosecutors said.

Report: Aaron Hernandez seeks jail transfer for safety reasons
The Bristol County sheriff is against the idea
.
June 2014
According to a report from The Associated Press, former NFL football star Aaron Hernandez, who is currently being held at the Bristol County Jail on murder charges, wants to be transferred to a jail closer to Bean Town.
On Friday, the ex-tight end’s attorneys said that communication between them and their client, as well as their client’s safety, are jeopardized by Hernandez’s current location.
Bristol County Sheriff Tom Hodgson wasn’t keen on the idea, but admitted that a judge would have the ultimate say in the decision.
“It’s up to the judge to decide that, but as a matter of practice, we wouldn’t be able to do that for every inmate that has attorneys out of our jurisdiction. The corrections system would not be able to manage the population,” Sheriff Hodgson said, according to the Boston Herald. “We’ve never had a situation where we moved someone to be closer to their attorneys.”
The AP notes the Hernandez’s lawyers have accused Hodgson of violating the disgraced football star’s due process rights and privacy rights, alleging that the sheriff is using the murder suspect for “self promotion and virtually non-stop publicity.”
His lawyers point out that Hernandez has had run ins with prison guards and other inmates.

Aaron Hernandez featured in Gators 2014 calendar
July 1 2014
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Ex-Florida and NFL star Aaron Hernandez, jailed while awaiting trial in the killing of three men, is Mr. July in the Gators' 2014 sports calendar. The school said Tuesday that officials approved the publication months before he was charged with murder.
The calendar is still available for sale through Target.com and features tight end No. 81 in the Gators' white jersey and blue pants with an orange stripe carrying the football under his right arm and almost looking into the camera. It includes his height, weight and hometown of Bristol, Connecticut.
Officials approved the calendar last spring, months before the arrest, said Florida spokesman Daniel Apple.
Since then, the 24-year-old Hernandez has also been indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in the drive-by shooting of two other men, Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado and faces trial next year. He has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges, and is in jail in Massachusetts.
Apple said the calendar was not produced by the university, but a third party. Since it's already been printed and distributed for sale, there's not much the school can do, Apple said.
"There are thousands of Gators products for approval in the pipeline at any given moment," he said.
He added that the school just became aware of the situation on Monday.
Apple says the school advised the calendar's maker that Florida no longer approves of the product, but that those already printed will not be recalled.
The calendar was first reported on Deadspin.com, and the official Florida Gators football Twitter feed responded, also saying the calendar was approved before Hernandez's legal troubles were widely known.

Patriots: Team owes Aaron Hernandez nothing
July 2, 2014
BOSTON (AP) - The New England Patriots don't owe "another penny" to former tight end Aaron Hernandez, who is charged in three killings, a team lawyer told a judge Wednesday.
Attorney Andrew Phelan said the team terminated its contract with Hernandez shortly after he was charged last year in the death of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd. He said the team does not believe it owes Hernandez a $3.25 million contract signing bonus.
"The Patriots believe under the terms of that contract that they owe not another penny to Mr. Hernandez," Phelan said during a hearing in Suffolk Superior Court on wrongful death lawsuits filed by the families of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, two Boston men prosecutors say were also killed by Hernandez.
The families' lawyer, William Kennedy, asked for an order barring the Patriots from paying Hernandez the $3.25 million if the team is ever ordered to do so by an arbitrator. According to the lawsuit filed by Kennedy, Hernandez has filed a grievance seeking the money, plus $82,000 he says is owed to him by the team.
But Judge Bonnie MacLeod said the team is already subject to a similar order in the Lloyd case and accepted a signed stipulation from the Patriots. The agreement says the Patriots will inform the court if an arbitrator orders them to pay Hernandez and will be subject to any further orders from the court on the matter, Kennedy said.
Kennedy also asked to add the Patriots organization as a defendant in the lawsuit. He said his primary goal in adding the team was to be able to get information on the terms of Hernandez's contract with the Patriots in an effort to try to secure assets for the families in the event they are awarded damages by a jury. Each family is asking for $6 million in damages.
MacLeod said she would take that request under advisement, but was leaning against adding the team as defendants. The judge said Kennedy has other ways of getting the information he is looking for from the Patriots.
Hernandez's attorney, John Fitzpatrick, argued in court papers that the attempt to prevent the team from paying Hernandez is "fundamentally unfair" because Hernandez needs the money to pay for his defense in the three killings and the civil cases.
Depriving Hernandez access to his earnings "would impair his state and federal constitutional rights to counsel and to due process," he wrote.
In court Wednesday, Fitzpatrick said he is not arguing that Hernandez needs the money or that Hernandez does not want any money to go to the bereaved families. He said it is clear that the judge in the Odin Lloyd case has already asserted authority over Hernandez's assets.

Judge: Mother, Fiancee Can Attend Aaron Hernandez Trial
Former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez is due in court on Tuesday before he goes on trial Friday for allegedly killing Odin Lloyd in 2013.
January 6, 2015
The judge overseeing the murder case against former New
England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez says his fiancee and mother may attend the trial, even though they could be called as witnesses.
In addition, the judge rejected the prosecution's request to cover up a trophy case in the ex-player's home when jurors visit. Prosecutor William McCauley told Superior Court Justice Susan Garsh that the defense team wanted to impress jurors with the trophies; however, Hernandez's lawyer argued that the house should be shown to jurors exactly the way it was at the time of Odin Lloyd's death.
The judge also approved a prosecution request to bring jurors to several cellphone towers over the objections of Hernandez's lawyers, who said they were trying to re-enact their theory of the case. Prosecutors argued it is routine to show jurors the locations from which calls were placed.
Hernandez was in Bristol County Superior Court for a pretrial hearing ahead of his trial, which starts Friday with jury selection. He was a tight end for the Patriots with a $40 million contract when prosecutors say he killed Lloyd in an industrial park near his home in North Attleborough. Lloyd was found shot to death on June 17, 2013.
The trial is expected to last six to 10 weeks, and dozens of witnesses could be called, including Patriots coach Bill Belichick and team owner Robert Kraft.
Hernandez also has pleaded not guilty in the fatal shootings of two men in 2012 after an encounter at a Boston nightclub. That case has not yet gone to trial.

After Conviction, Many Court Cases Left For Aaron Hernandez
April 16, 2015
FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) — Even after he was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole, former New England Patriots star tight end Aaron Hernandez is nowhere near done with his legal troubles. He still faces double murder charges in Boston, as well as civil lawsuits over the killings and a lawsuit in Florida from a former friend who said he was shot in the face and left for dead after arguing with Hernandez.
A jury on Wednesday found Hernandez guilty of the June 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd, who was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancee. Lloyd was killed — shot six times in a deserted industrial park less than a mile from Hernandez’s home — for reasons that still remain unclear. Hernandez’s lawyer acknowledged his client witnessed the crime but insisted he did not do it.
After the verdict, Hernandez was brought to a state prison less than a 4-mile drive from Gillette Stadium, the place where he once used to catch touchdown passes by Tom Brady in front of tens of thousands of fans. He will eventually be moved to another maximum-security institution.
A first-degree murder conviction in Massachusetts automatically triggers an appeal to the Supreme Judicial Court. A date for the Hernandez appeal wasn’t immediately set.
Hernandez also is charged in a 2012 double killing in Boston. His alleged connection to that slaying emerged as the Lloyd investigation unfolded. Prosecutors in Boston say that Hernandez killed two men, Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, after one of them accidentally bumped into him and spilled Hernandez’s drink at a nightclub. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder.

Aaron Hernandez charged with witness intimidation
May 11, 2015
BOSTON (AP) — Former New England Patriots player and convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez is facing another criminal charge: witness intimidation, prosecutors said Monday.
Hernandez was convicted last month of killing Odin Lloyd, who was dating his fiancee's sister, in June 2013. He also faces two counts of murder in Boston, where he is accused of gunning down two men in 2012 after one caused him to spill his drink at a nightclub
A grand jury indicted Hernandez on Friday on the latest charge, according to the office of Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley. It said the victim of the intimidation was a witness to the Boston killings, which happened on July 16, 2012.
"Hernandez allegedly shot him in the face on the morning of Feb. 13, 2013, and left him to die on the side of the road in Riviera Beach, Florida, after the witness made a remark about the homicides," the office said in a news release.
Hernandez's lawyers didn't immediately return a message seeking comment on the new charge.
The district attorney's office did not identify the witness, but it is clear from several other court proceedings that it is former Hernandez friend Alexander Bradley.
