La Plata County Mounted Patrol added 12 new photos.
28 mins ·

Hello Friends & Folks,
As we close out 2014, we thought we'd take a little time and review our past year. It has been busy for the Mounted Patrol, since January 1, we logged a total of 4,769 hours which include Training's, Search and Rescue Related Missions, Planned Events and Emergencies with the La Plata County Sheriff's Office, Durango Police Department, Bayfield Marshal's Office and the Colorado State Patrol. Of course there are monthly meetings where we catch up on what went on the previous month as well as what is looming on the horizon that we need to get ready for. And then there was some time put in on the administrative level, keeping books, minutes, meetings with other agencies and event coordinators so we can provide when called upon.

Some of the highlights of the past year include Landing Zone training with the medical helicopter companies we have in the area. Multiple training's with the Sheriff Reserve. 1st Aid and CPR refresher courses and Qualification's at the Durango Gun Club's outdoor range.

We spent another three days on Middle Mountain searching for additional evidence regarding the Dylan Redwine case. Since it is an ongoing investigation, we can't share much, but do know, there are dedicated investigators that continue to work on it.

Lost and injured individuals in the back country seemed to drop some in numbers this year so our involvement was down when compared to previous years. We were active on six and were on standby for several others. Some resolved themselves on their own, some were solved quickly because La Plata County has a great Search and Rescue group that responds quickly and professionally and one of our roles is to be a support unit for them in getting heavy or bulky equipment moved into the area where S & R missions are being conducted.

LPCMP also worked six rodeos in Durango not only in providing security for attendees but were honored to present the colors on horseback at each event for the opening ceremony and National Anthem. Several parades happen throughout the year, some we assist with crowd control, others well add an entry of our own as well. Those include the 4th of July Parade in Bayfield, Durango Fiesta Days Parade, Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering's "Motorless Parade", the "Unofficial Zombie March" on Halloween and the Snowdown Light Parade.

We continued with our Mountie on Skis program at Purgatory during the 2013/2014 season and back on the mountain again this year. Mounties who are skiers and wish to be a part of the program are trained to assist the Purgatory Pro Patrol with many of their duties and responsibilities they have to deal with on a daily basis. During the 2013/2014 ski seasons, we were able to put in 36 days and logged 415 hours "on the hill".

We added a few new Mounties to the roster during this past year. One was a "Reserve Mountie" who now of age decided to become a full fledged member. Three new folks and one returned after a several month sabbatical. We're closing in on a full roster, 23 on the books and a few waiting to fill the last two spots that are open.

Certainly one of the biggest highlights of the year was a long time friend and "Honorary Mountie", Harry Jarrell turned 99. So on December 1 at our monthly meeting, it was party time sharing a birthday cake with our "pard". See you next year Harry we'll get some fireworks for your "century party".

There is an album with a few pictures along with this post, enjoy.

As we look forward to 2015, we'd like to thank you for your support over the past few years and look forward to many more great times with you. Enjoy your holidays, here's to good health and Stay Safe.

Thanks for all, LPCMP

So long, 2014
Tragedy prevails among year’s top local stories

By Dale Rodebaugh Herald staff writer Article Last Updated: Tuesday, December 30, 2014 10:50pm

No. 9. The story of Dylan Redwine, the then-13-year-old boy who disappeared in November 2012 while on a court-ordered visit to his father in Vallecito, was featured in June on the Denver Post’s Cold Case Blog.

Post staff writer Kirk Mitchell chose Dylan’s story after his father, Mark Redwine, was placed on a 12-hour mental-health hold while in Denver in May.

The case drew attention from national media figures, including Nancy Grace and Dr. Phil. Bone fragments, identified as belonging to Dylan, were found in June 2013 near Vallecito. No one has been charged in the case.

3. Recreational pot becomes available in Durango.

in Dylan's thread. Not sure what to make of it.

Schirard’s mixed history
Since taking office in 1994, sheriff has been characterized as both a ‘leader’ and a ‘good ol’ boy’
By Mary Shinn Herald staff writer Article Last Updated: Saturday, January 10, 2015 8:59pm

Sheriff Duke Schirard will exit office Monday after 20 years at the helm, leaving behind a debatable legacy.

Schirard refused to talk with the Herald for this story. Likewise, several top officials in the department, including sheriff’s spokesman Dan Bender and Undersheriff David Griggs, and professionals he worked with closely in the community did not return phone calls seeking comment or chose not to go on record.

Leadership hits and misses

Under Schirard’s leadership, the Sheriff’s Office solved every murder case except one – the case of teenager Dylan Redwine who went missing near Vallecito in 2012 and whose remains were found about seven months later. The office has closed about 70 percent of felony cases over the last 20 years and expanded the jail to make it more functional, Phippen and another sheriff’s official said.

Family offers reward for info leading to arrest, conviction of Dylan Redwine's killer
Still no suspect in Dylan Redwine death

UPDATED 7:14 PM MST Feb 05, 2015

VALLECITO, Colo. —Police in Colorado are still looking for the person who killed a teenager three years ago.

Redwine went missing from his father’s Vallecito, Colorado, home in November 2012. At first, officials thought maybe the 13-year-old had run away.

Months went by, and massive searches and vigils took place before authorities located Redwine’s remains. The family was heartbroken but relieved.

Now with the case turning cold and the killer still out there, this birthday week is particularly hard on the family.

The family is frustrated with the La Plata Sheriff’s Office, saying the office hasn’t been contacting them with updates. They feel there should be plenty of evidence to make an arrest.

The Sheriff’s Office doesn’t have a suspect and has turned the case over to the district attorney. The family is offering a $50,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest or conviction.

Dylan's mother calls for arrest of Mark Redwine

D.A., sheriff's office need to focus on son's murder, Elaine Hatfield says

By Melanie BRUBAKER Mazur

Times Editor Article Last Updated: Thursday, February 12, 2015 2:25pm

More than two years after her son's disappearance, Elaine Hatfield blames his death on her ex-husband and Dylan's father, Mark Redwine.

And she is discouraged and angry that he has not been charged with his murder.

"I know he killed Dylan," she said in a phone interview from her home in Monument, where she and her two sons had moved in 2012, before her son's disappearance. "It amazes me that he (Mark Redwine) can just leave, and we will not know where he is."

Dylan was on a court-ordered visit to see his father in Vallecito over Thanksgiving when he disappeared in 2012. A few of his bones were found on Middle Mountain in June of 2013.

Mark Redwine has steadfastedly maintained his innocence, saying he left his son at home on the Monday before Thanksgiving to do errands in Durango.

Hatfield said she is concerned about her and her family's safety, including that of her eldest son, Cory Redwine, and his new son.

"I'm just at a level of frustration," she said. "Where is Dylan's case?"

She says she's been told by investigators with the La Plata County Sheriff's Office that they have handed the case to District Attorney Todd Risberg. She has not heard from anyone in the district attorney's office, or from the county's new sheriff, Sean Smith, who was elected in 2014.

"This was the murder of my son," she said. "They're minimizing it. And I fear for our safety. I don't understand where it (the case) went. It seems like the perpetrator has all the rights."

On Friday, Feb. 6, her son's 16th birthday, she received calls and messages from friends and from reporters who have been covering the case since Dylan disappeared, but she did not hear anything from law enforcement.

"I feel like we're all by ourselves," she said. "I know there's a process. I'm not naive. But when does the process work for the victim?"

The investigation of her son's disappearance and death "needs some attention now," she said. "The day he went missing, it didn't get the attention then. They kept insisting he was a runaway. I told them he was not a runaway."

All of the evidence points to her ex-husband, she said.

"Two years later, he's gotten rid of everything in the house," she said. "I want to spur La Plata County to get going, but I'm not sure what it will take."

I stand with the girl, Natalee Holloway.

"I can look back over the past 10 years and there were no steps wasted, and there are no regrets,'' she said. "I did all I knew to do and I think that gives me greater peace now." "I've lived every parent's worst nightmare and I'm the parent that nobody wants to be," she said.
