Mark Redwine’s house in Vallecito in progress of being foreclosed

By Vanessa Guthrie Herald staff writer

Article Last Updated: Friday, September 26, 2014 8:18pm

Mark Redwine has entered foreclosure on his Vallecito home. He is the father of Dylan Redwine, the teenager whose remains were found eight months after he went missing Nov. 19, 2012.

Preliminary documentation for the foreclosure of Redwine’s property in the Happy Scenes subdivision in Vallecito was submitted earlier this week, according to La Plata County records.

Authorities have executed at least two search warrants at the home looking for clues to Dylan’s disappearance. In January 2013, about 20 demonstrators gathered outside Mark Redwine’s home demanding the father be more cooperative with search efforts for his son.

La Plata County Sheriff Duke Schirard declined to say whether the foreclosure would affect the nearly 2-year-old investigation.

La Plata County District Attorney Todd Risberg also declined to comment about the foreclosure.

“We don’t comment on pending investigations,” he said.

According to La Plata County records, the status of the foreclosure is listed as “notice of election and demand,” or NED. The paperwork has been filed with the county Clerk and Recorder’s Office, meaning the foreclosure process has officially begun.

Attempts to reach Mark Redwine for comment were unsuccessful Thursday afternoon. Efforts to reach Elaine Hatfield, Dylan’s mother, who lives in the Colorado Springs-area, also were unsuccessful.

Redwine owes $165,397.79 on the property, records indicate.

Dylan Redwine's family asks hunters to look out for missing teen's belongings
Family hopes to promote public awareness

DURANGO, Colo. - Dylan Redwine's brother hopes a new flier asking hunters and hikers to be on the lookout for the 13-year-old's belongings will raise public awareness that there are still no arrests.

Cory Redwine, 21, showed 7NEWS the flier, which has pictures of Dylan's backpack, his Blue Devils cap and the type of Verizon flip phone he was carrying.

"I just want to keep Dylan's story and Dylan's heart in the front of everybody's mind," said Cory.

Nearly two years after Dylan disappeared, his memory is everywhere in his older brother's home near Colorado Springs, from photos to the keychain he carries with him.

"His favorite color was blue," said Cory. "Anytime I can find something with his name spelled correctly, I try to pick it up."

Cory was one of the searchers who found only 2 percent of his little brother's remains last summer, and police launched the murder investigation.

Police have never named a suspect in their investigation.

"Do you think police and law enforcement will ever be able to prove who did this?' asked 7NEWS Reporter Jaclyn Allen.

"I think at one point, yes," said Cory.

Cory said he hasn't given up hope, and will keep fighting to make sure everyone remembers his brother.

"Even when I'm 80 years old, I don't think this pain can ever go away. You realize how much you love people when they're gone," he said.

CBI launches new cold case website
Eight unsolved cases in Durango, La Plata County
By Elaine Severson
Herald Staff Writer Article Last Updated: Thursday, October 02, 2014 11:04pm

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation has relaunched its cold cases website with an updated photo carousel, expanded narratives, an improved search feature and the ability to view recently solved cases.

On the Net

www.colorado.gov/apps/coldcase/index.html

“One of our primary goals in improving the website is to offer visitors robust information to potentially trigger memories or additional information to aid detectives in cold-case investigations across Colorado,” said Audrey Simkins, cold-case analyst with the CBI, in a news release.

The database has 1,577 cold cases, including six unsolved cases in Durango and two in La Plata County.

All open cases in Durango happened between 1972 and 1985 and have been classified as a homicides. Victims include, Daniel Fiorini, whose body was found April 30, 1976, along the Animas River; Joe Felix Manzanes, who died July 27, 1972; Dennis Power Steele, who died Dec. 5, 1978; Irva Steele, who died Nov. 12, 1977; and David M. Tyler, who died Nov. 19, 1985.

Cold cases listed under the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office include Prestlie Dean Hall, who went missing sometime around June 16, 1988, after being observed as depressed and having talked of suicide. The other victim is 13-year-old Dylan Redwine, who was first reported missing Nov. 19, 2012, after disappearing from his father’s home near Vallecito. The case is considered a homicide.

The website was initially created in 2010, and the updated site was released Sept. 25 in conjunction with the eighth annual Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims. Cases include unsolved homicides, long-term missing people and unidentified remains.

Investigators for the Durango Police Department use the CBI website, as well as other websites, when looking for information about cases, said Durango Chief of Police Jim Spratlen.

Visit www.colorado.gov/apps/coldcase/index.html to search the database. Anyone with information pertaining to a case is asked to contact the local authorities.

There's a new sheriff in town, praying it will be a positive change for Dylan's case.

Smith wins sheriff’s race
Dem focused race on the future

By Chase Olivarius-Mcallister Herald staff writer
Article Last Updated: Wednesday, November 05, 2014 1:51am

Sean Smith accepts congratulations as he enters Brew with son, Christopher Smith, 10, and mom Holly Smith, back. Son Brandon Smith, 16, in doorway.

There’s a new sheriff in town. According to the La Plata County Clerk & Recorders Office end of the night unofficial results, Deputy Sean Smith decisively defeated five-term incumbent Duke Schirard in the race for La Plata County sheriff.

Smith’s victory marks a dramatic shift for the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office, which is set to undergo a change in leadership for the first time in two decades.

In an interview Tuesday night, Smith said he was “excited” to win. “It feels pretty good. We fought for the last year and three months for this. I have to give it up to my family – it’s been challenging for my wife and my kids, but we were stepping up for what we believe in and it looks like the hard work paid off.”

Schirard could not be reached for comment on Election Night.

Smith congratulated Schirard on his long career in law enforcement. “I thank him for his 20 years of service. I just thought it was time to go in a new direction.”

The race was one of the most exciting and hard fought this fall. Schirard ran on his experience, casting Smith as an ambitious upstart.

Smith, meanwhile, sought to frame the race as about the future.

The campaign was rough on Schirard.

First, Schirard faced criticism when an email he wrote denouncing Durango went public.

In the email, Schirard said, “The demographics of downtown Durango has changed so drastically in the 42 years, I have lived in La Plata County that I don’t even recognize it or want to go downtown. Every day at noon I sit in Colorado Trading Co. on 8th Ave. and visit, most days with John Malarsie, Tom Price and others. We are disgusted and as upset with the situation as you or anyone else. (sic)

“This is purely a reaction from your liberal, democratic, gun hating, pot loving, abortionist, Obama supporting socialist who have taken over Durango City government and want it to be Aspen south.” (sic)

Then the campaign seemed to take a self-destructive turn when Schirard told The Durango Herald’s editorial board and three of its news staff members that he had threatened Smith and Durango Police Department’s Sgt. Geary Parsons with a summons for discussing allegations that Schirard had physically beaten two former wives.

Classic Mark Move!! You are the asshole of all assholes no doubt. Just had to fight and fight to get the Windmill house. Fight until Elaine had no choice but to move. You basically kicked your own kids to the street and for what? So you could collect rent from innocent people and NEVER make the mortgage payments and now it has hit foreclosure status. You are a f***ing douche bag to the very end aren't you? Typical "If I Cant have it nobody will" Mark attitude. This is the same attitude that got you to be the #1 Suspect you f******!! Same with Dylan wasn't it? "If I cant have him nobody will"? God forbid you be a real man and tell the bank you cant make payments but if Elaine can you would turn it back over. Nope instead let it foreclose and We now have to show up at auction and bid on a house Elaine has made 99% of the mortgage payments on and a home Dylan grew up in just to get it back? You are quite the POS!!

In ten days it will be two years since Dylan was brutally murdered; a monster still walks free among us.

Dylan's childhood home is scheduled for sale Feb 4th, 2015, two days before his sixteenth birthday.

I hope there is an arrest soon!

Marine vet turns to fighting cancer
Despite illness, Bayfield woman still advocating for justice in teen case

By Melanie Brubaker Mazur
Pine River Times Editor Article Last Updated: Sunday, November 09, 2014 8:30pm

Anybody who knows Denise Hess agrees she’s a fighter.

The mother of three in Bayfield is known for being a relentless advocate in the search for her friend’s son, Dylan Redwine. Even after part of his skeletal remains were found, she has worked to keep the case, now a murder investigation, in the public spotlight.

She attributes part of that take-charge attitude to her service in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1985 to 1988, when she was a small-arms weapons instructor at Camp LeJeune in North Carolina.

She also has turned that fighting spirit toward her own case – taking charge of her Stage IV colo-rectal cancer diagnosed in June 2013.

On Veterans Day, she will pause to thank her dad and uncle, both U.S. Navy Veterans, and remember her grandfather, James Fuller, also a Marine veteran in the Pacific in World War II.

Almost two years ago, on Nov. 19, 2012, Hess’ life turned upside down.

A longtime friend of hers, Elaine Hatfield, called her in tears from Colorado Springs and said her son Dylan had gone missing from Vallecito. He had flown in to Durango the day before to visit his father, Mark Redwine.

“I never even thought about it,” she said of her immediate action to help her friend look for her son. “There was no time to think about anything.”

Hess and a group of parents in Bayfield – some of them friends of Hatfield’s, but many complete strangers – began searching door-to-door in Vallecito and Forest Lakes, passing out fliers and asking people if they had seen the then-13-year-old boy. Thanksgiving dinner was eaten at a friend’s house after a day of searching on the mountain.

“I was terrified and heartbroken,” she said.

She helped organized a rally with media coverage, news conferences, kept passing out fliers and rallied volunteers to make blue ribbons with Dylan’s name on them.

A Facebook page she started, Find Missing Dylan Redwine, grew quickly, and now has 29,785 likes. This autumn, she has been helping Hatfield’s fiancé, Michael Hall, get the word out to area hunters about Dylan’s missing hat, cellphone and backpack, which were never found. Some of his bones were found in June 2013 on Middle Mountain, near his father’s house. DNA testing determined they were Dylan’s. The rest of his remains have not been found.

Then six months later, another life-changing event took place. Hess suffered from a lot of abdominal pain and went to see an alternative-healing doctor, who told her not to worry about it. But the pain worsened, and knowing something wasn’t right, she found another doctor who ordered a colonoscopy. The results were not good. She had cancerous tumors in her colon and rectum. One of her grandfathers had died from the same thing.

She went through two rounds of chemotherapy and one round of radiation. Cancer that had moved to her lungs seemed to be shrinking.

She recently received disheartening news when she learned some of the cancer is back on her lungs.

But once again, she is trying to remain positive and keep fighting. The spots detected in the scan are small.

“I’m feeling OK,” she said. “I’m tired and worn out and really disappointed in the latest news. But I will keep fighting, because that’s what Marines do.”
