George Zimmerman Trial: 8 things to know from Friday
Last Updated: Friday, July 05, 2013, 7:02 PM

SANFORD --
Family from both sides of the case took the stand Friday in the trial of George Zimmerman. Testimony focused on whose voice it was yelling for help in the background of a 911 call made the night of the shooting.

[Editor's note: Click the linked text to read the live update summary from that moment in court.]

Trayvon’s mother testifies

Sybrina Fulton, Trayvon Martin’s mother, testified the screams for help heard in the background of a 911 were her son’s.

She was the first witness called by the state Friday and spent only about 10 minutes on the stand.

Following the playing of the recording of the call by prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda, Fulton told the jury she recognized the screaming as Martin’s voice.

In cross examination with defense attorney Mark O’Mara, she described who was in the room when she first heard the recording, listing family attorneys Benjamin Crump and Natalie Jackson, along with Tracy Martin and Jahvaris Fulton, Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett and City Manager Norton Bonaparte.

She also told the court Martin was right-handed.

7/5/13  It Has To Be Said: Judge Debra Nelson Is Not Handling The George Zimmerman Case In An Impartial Fashion

"
Martin had lived with his father at his girlfriend's home in Sanford, Florida in a condominium development where Zimmerman lived with his wife for only a short time after Martin's mother kicked him out of her house after a run-in he had with police when he was supposed to be at school. Earlier, he had been suspended from the Miami school he attended for fighting. He texted friends to tell them his mother had kicked him out of the house after "da police caught me outta skool." When a friend asked him if he was turning into a "hoodlum", he responded, "Naw, I'm a gangsta." Nelson would not allow any of that information to be offered by the defense, as well as images Martin had posted on Twitter showing him holding a gun, flipping the finger and showing off his marijuana plants. Despite a toxicology report suggesting that Martin had used pot a short time before his death, Judge Nelson would not permit that evidence to be heard by jurors."

"There was bizarre testimony offered today by the prosecution from the medical examiner who performed the autopsy on Martin's body, who could not have been a worse expert witness for the prosecution, perhaps owing in part to his cultural distance as a Chinese immigrant from how things are done in American courtrooms. Dr. Shiping Bao had originally concluded in his autopsy report that the presence of THC in Martin's body would not have impacted his judgment on the fateful day as Zimmerman's defense attorneys had wanted to argue. Bao later changed his opinion to conclude the opposite but not until after his deposition in the case. Zimmerman's attorneys were never notified of the change in his position, as well as Bao's conclusion about the length of time he believed Martin would have lived after being shot by Zimmerman.

Justifiably, Zimmerman's attorneys believed a discovery violation had taken place because they had not been notified prior to trial of the changes in Dr. Bao's medical conclusions. Judge Nelson conducted what is known as a Richardson hearing to learn more about the circumstances surrounding his changed opinion to determine whether a discovery violation had occurred. The prosecution claimed they had no prior knowledge of his changed opinions, and Dr. Bao backed them up on that claim.

Nothing to see here according to Judge Nelson, "

"  Prosecutors, not surprisingly, never called Martin's father because he had stated that the voice on the 911 call was not that of his son when he first heard it. Jurors were not allowed to hear testimony about a civil suit Fulton and Martin's father, Tracy Martin, had brought against the homeowner's association to recover for their son's death. According to news reports, the parents settled out of court for $1 million this past April."

"Hopefully, the jurors have better sense to decide this case correctly than the judge and prosecution have demonstrated thus far by their actions"

7/5/13   Twitter Loves Dr. Bao in Zimmerman Trial

" Twitter continues its communal viewing of the George Zimmerman murder trial, and while it was inevitable that the people charged with defending Zimmerman would be seen as heartless bullies by those rooting for justice in the form of a guilty verdict, today a HERO emerged in the form of medical examiner Dr. Shiping Bao, the man who performed Trayvon Martin's autopsy"

I hope everyone is having a good weekend.  My thoughts on the prosecutions case:  I dont really know what their case was!  In fact Mark O'Mara told the judge he didn't even know what the theory of this case was.  If he is found guilty of anything, it will be appealed.  This is disgusting.  I am disgusted by the states attorney's.  There is no evidence at all.  The judge should have issued a directed verdict but we all know she wouldn't.  If there's a hung jury I wonder if the state will retry the case?   I think O'Mara and West are going to present a compelling case for their client which will only add to the reasonable doubt the prosecution has already brought out.

In busting Zimmerman myths, Jonathan Capehart perpetuates the greatest myth of all
Posted by William A. Jacobson    Sunday, July 7, 2013 at 9:22am

Zimmerman was not, in fact, in his vehicle at the time the police said “we don’t need you to do that”

Jonathan Capehart at The Washington Post writes of Five myths about the killing of Trayvon Martin (h/t Instapundit).

The first myth listed concerns alleged police instructions for Zimmerman not to leave his vehicle.  This is a fundamental myth in the case, and gives rise to a claim one hears constantly and to this day:  If only Zimmerman had not left his vehicle when police told him not to, this never would have happened.

That narrative is spun, incorrectly, into legal theories that Zimmerman must have been the aggressor because he left the car against police orders and followed Martin.

Here’s how Capehart frames the myth, and how he debunks the myth:

134 people on George Zimmerman defense's witness list
Last Updated: Thursday, March 28, 2013, 12:46 PM

SANFORD --
George Zimmerman's defense team has released an extensive, four-page list of witnesses for their upcoming second-degree murder trial for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

The witness list, released Tuesday, includes a total of 134 people broken down by how they are involved in the case.

For example, former Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee and former Detective Chris Serino, who was the main detective investigating the shooting, were both listed as witnesses.

Former Seminole County state attorney Norm Wolfinger is also listed. Wolfinger is the one who decided to defer the case to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and asked Gov. Rick Scott for a special prosecutor.

Family members of both Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin are on the witness list, along with the Martin family's attorney, Benjamin Crump, whom the defense has asked twice to question about the unnamed "Witness 8," said to be Trayvon's girlfriend and the last person to speak with the teen before his deadly confrontation with Zimmerman.
