July 7, 2013

An 11-year-old boy with autism was reported missing from Menifee Sunday and the sheriff's office asked anyone with information to contact deputies.

Terry Dewayne Smith went missing from the 33000 block of Helen Lane between 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Lisa McConnell wrote in a news release.

Volunteers aided by a helicopter crew and a bloodhound searched the area but came up short, the sergeant said.

Terry is blond, has blue eyes, is 4 feet 8 and weighs 76 pounds; he was last seen wearing blue basketball shorts, officials said.

You're welcome BabsKats.  There's a fifteen hour spread of time Terry could have disappeared in.     I really fear for this boy.  For any child of age 11 to be missing is absolutely frightening, but when the child also has challenges, then it really ups the stakes for a safe return.

I wonder how the blood hound search "came up short"?  Does this mean his scent stopped?  Did someone pick him up in a vehicle?  Each minute, each hour and now we are looking at nightfall and another day.      I hope Terry can be found safe.

Menifee is a very rural desert community.  Not much there but a few homes spread out through the scrub.  Can't imagine there being many hiding places that couldn't be searched rather quickly.  Definitly not a place for a challenged child to be wandering around in.

Although it is hot and there is desert all around, actually Menifee has grown quite a bit in the last 10 years.  Population is over 77k now.  Back about 8-10 years ago there started building a lot of inexpensive tract homes.

Babs - that is hopefully good news for Terry.  Hopefully he's found someplace cooler to hide? (wishful thinking)

MENIFEE, Calif. (KABC) -- The search continues in the Riverside County town of Menifee for a missing 11-year-old boy with autism.

Terry Dewayne Smith was last seen at his home in the 33000 block of Helen Lane Saturday night. Authorities are asking for the public's help in finding him.

"The child is autistic. He does have the mental capacity of a 7-year-old," said Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy Albert Martinez.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department has its incident command post covered with search equipment. Volunteers set up a post of their own two blocks away where more than 50 people were assigned areas to search for Smith and picked up snacks for the road.

According to investigators, Smith was last seen in his stepbrother's room around 9 p.m. Saturday. He was gone Sunday morning. The search for him has been on since, up and down steep and rough terrain.

"We've been calling his name and looking behind bushes and behind trees," said Tyler O'Keefe, a volunteer searcher.

"If you look at the properties there's a lot of acreage and a lot of big properties, so we do have to go and search through those properties, which makes it kind of difficult also because of the terrain," said Martinez.

Smith, who responds to the name "JuJu," has blond-sandy hair and brown eyes. He is 4 feet 8 inches tall, weighs 76 pounds and was last seen wearing blue basketball shorts.

Authorities do not suspect foul play. Deputies say they don't know of any fight or argument Smith may have had with one of his relatives to make him run away

Coming by to see if there's any word on Terry.  I haven't seen much news about his disappearance.  I hope he can be found safe and soon!

MENIFEE: Search for missing boy expanded
July 9, 2013 by Peter Surowski

The search for an 11-year-old autistic boy who went missing from his home in Menifee has expanded from 16- to 81-square-miles.

The search began around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, July 7, when he was reported missing from a house in the 33000 block of Helen Lane. He was last seen the night before around 7:30 p.m.

More than 500 emergency workers and volunteers had gathered at two command posts around 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, and as many as 1,000 were expected to join the search throughout the day, according to sheriff’s Deputy Albert Martinez.

Officials are hopeful despite the extreme heat — Monday peaked at 106 degrees — and the time that has elapsed since he went missing.

“We have high hopes that he’s still alive,” the deputy said. “If you have water and shade, you can survive these elements.”

MENIFEE: No leads on missing autistic boy

BY PETER SUROWSKI
July 09, 2013; 07:19 PM

Efforts ramped-up on Tuesday, July 9, in the search for an 11-year-old autistic boy who disappeared from his Menifee home over the weekend.

So far, however, those efforts have been in vain.

An estimated 1,000 emergency workers and volunteers joined in the search for Terry Dewayne Smith Jr., which began around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, July 7, when his mother reported him missing from his home in the 33000 block of Helen Lane.

Officials were still hopeful the blonde, 4-foot-8, 76 pounds boy with high-functioning autism will be found safely, according to the Riverside County sheriff’s department.
