From jury instruction:
http://www.ktvu.com/news/news/national/document-instructions-george-zimmerman-jury/nYnqZ/
MANSLAUGHTER
To prove the crime of Manslaughter, the State must prove the following two elements beyond a reasonable doubt:
1. Trayvon Martin is dead.
2. George Zimmerman intentionally committed an act or acts that caused the death of Trayvon Martin.
George Zimmerman cannot be guilty of manslaughter by committing a merely negligent act or if the killing was either justifiable or excusable homicide:
Each of us has a duty to act reasonably toward others. If there is a violation of that duty, without any conscious intention to harm, that violation is negligence.
The killing of a human being is justifiable homicide and lawful if necessarily done while resisting an attempt to murder or commit a felony upon George Zimmerman, or to commit a felony in any dwelling house in which George Zimmerman was at the time of the killing.
The killing of a human being is excusable, and therefore lawful, under any one of the following three circumstances:
1. When the killing is committed by accident and misfortune in doing any lawful act by lawful means with usual ordinary caution and without any unlawful intent, or
2. When the killing occurs by accident and misfortune in the heat of passion, upon any sudden and sufficient provocation, or
3. When the killing is committed by accident and misfortune resulting from a sudden combat, if a dangerous weapon is not used and the killing is not done in a cruel or unusual manner.
In order to convict of manslaughter by act, it is not necessary for the State to prove that George Zimmerman had an intent to cause death, only an intent to commit an act that was not merely negligent, justified, or excusable and which caused death.
If you find George Zimmerman committed Manslaughter, and you also find beyond a reasonable doubt that during the commission of the Manslaughter, George Zimmerman carried, displayed, used, threatened to use, or attempted to use a firearm, you should check the appropriate box on the verdict form which I will discuss with you later in these instructions.
The definition of a 'firearm' has been previously provided in these instructions.

Jury has asked the question on the need clarification on manslaughter.
Not good for Zimmerman.
This jury is doing a compromise verdict. Self defense does away with both second degree murder and manslaughter.
I am somewhat concerned that ... thanks to the Judiciary's rulings ... jurors were not afforded the entire self-defence picture. The defence was required to plead the case without evidence.
On the other hand ... TM was portrayed by the Prosecution to jurors as an innocent little kid walking home following a purchase of candy when he encountered a big bad wannabe police officer.
The State may have not convinced jurors that the death of TM was 2nd Degree Murder but ... maybe the case of Manslaughter out of context may be where it is at.

Judge Rules Whether Trayvon’s Alleged Past Drug Use And School Suspension Permitted In Zimmerman Trial
5:25 pm, May 28th, 2013
During a pre-trial hearing Tuesday afternoon, a Florida judge ruled that George Zimmerman’s defense team cannot use the late Trayvon Martin’s alleged prior marijuana use, school suspension, past fighting, personal text messages or pictures during its opening statement in next month’s high-profile second-degree murder trial. ....
The judge also ruled that she might allow the fact that a small amount of marijuana was found in Martin’s blood the night of the shooting, but only after hearing from experts about the toxicology tests performed on the late teenager. ....

Zimmerman judge needs to read this case on authentication of text messages
July 10, 2013 at 7:11am
Judge Nelson stated that there was no evidence that Trayvon typed the texts even though the messages were on his phone and stored in DOUBLE-PASSWORD protected format using phone apps. …
The defense countered that its computer forensic expert, who testified, was able to track hundreds if not thousand of text messages on the phone and that the flow of conversations indicated it was Trayvon in context.

Breaking – Jury will not get to see Trayvon fighting texts

N. @HoneyBadger10 4m
@JeffWeinerOS @abrinsley77 that's incorrect I believe. Manslaughter is negligent culpability. Hes responsible w/o malice? Hence the add?

FYI
http://www.richardhornsby.com/crimes/homicide/manslaughter.html
The crime of Manslaughter can be committed in one of three ways, either by:
1 Manslaughter by Act (Voluntary Manslaughter): Committing an intentional act that was neither excusable, nor justified that resulted in the death of another person.
2 Manslaughter by Procurement (Voluntary Manslaughter): Persuading, inducing, or encouraging another person to commit an act that resulted in the death of another person.
3 Manslaughter by Culpable Negligence (Involuntary Manslaughter): Engaging in “Culpably Negligent” conduct that resulted in the death of another person.
Thank you Klaas.
I have served on a jury several times. It was the most disappointing experience as many people cannot understand concepts like the above. In one trial, they said the majority ruled, and I had to explain that's not the way it is done; in another, they didn't like the way one of the people in the audience looked (it was actually George with an eye patch on and they thought he was with the defendant), heavens to betsy, the list goes on. It should never surprise me what a jury does anymore. They are generally not our peers. Heaven forbid, if I ever have to go to trial, if I am guilty I want a jury trial, if I'm not guilty, I want a judge to decide.

Zimmerman Jury Will Be Allowed to Consider Lesser Manslaughter Charge
Published: July 11, 2013
Manslaughter has a lower threshold for prosecutors to prove and is defined in Florida as the unlawful killing of a human being without malice — including the result of an accident or other act in which the person does not have the mental state to commit a murder.
Though Mr. Zimmerman could receive a sentence of life in prison if he is convicted of murder,
the maximum penalty in Florida for manslaughter with a deadly weapon is 30 years

http://www.wftv.com/news/news/local/breaking-down-charges-and-sentences-zimmerman-faci/nYpC6/
For either conviction, the state must prove Zimmerman is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
Second-Degree Murder
The state must prove Zimmerman killed Martin and it was an intentional killing that was not premeditated or planned.
If Zimmerman convicted of second-degree murder, he will face up to life in prison.
If the 10-20-Life Law is taken into consideration, a second-degree murder conviction means Zimmerman will have to serve a minimum 25 years in prison.
Manslaughter
The state must prove Zimmerman committed an act that caused death.
If Zimmerman is convicted of manslaughter with a firearm, he could be sentenced to a maximum of 30 years in prison.
Under the 10-20-Life Law, a manslaughter conviction means Zimmerman will have to serve a minimum of 25 years in prison and face a maximum of life in prison.
