March to the Capitol
Meet at 9:30 AM at Freedom Plaza in Washington, DC

Why the March to preserve American jobs for American workers?

We believe it is high time that members of Congress act to preserve economic opportunity for American workers – and pass immigration legislation that protects and supports the nearly 22 million American citizens who do not have jobs, or cannot find adequate employment to support their families.

Economists report that labor participation in the U.S. is at its lowest rate in over 30 years. Yet, despite these sluggish economic conditions, some in Congress have put forth immigration proposals to increase legal immigration levels by 50% and provide amnesty to over 11 million people who have entered the country illegally. We stand against these proposals, as they will result in adding millions more to the U.S. labor force, putting millions of American citizens out of work.

The slurs are a ham-fisted attempt to divert attention from two central questions: Will Americans stand idly by while their elected representative’s plot behind closed doors to pass a second round of amnesty that will only encourage another tidal wave of illegal immigration? Should fast-track citizenship for the nation’s illegal residents come at the expense of America’s entry-level and low-wage minority citizens?

Cottle may dismiss the report by the National Bureau of Economic Research that found a 40 percent decline in employment for low-skilled black men in recent decades was due to undocumented immigration, or that the Center for Immigration Studies found the summer labor force participation rate for black teens, between 1994 and 2007, declined from 50 to 35 percent … and from 52 to 37 percent for Hispanic teens.

Harvard scholars George Borjas, Jeffrey Grogger and Gordon Hanson found that one third of the decline in the employment rate of black male-high-school dropouts, between 1980 and 2000, was due to illegal immigration. Said the authors, “As immigrants disproportionately increased the supply of workers in a particular skill group, we find a reduction in the wage of black workers in that group” and “a reduction in the employment rate.”
