MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. - EXCLUSIVE - Despite brutally killing a young woman and being the prime suspect in the unsolved disappearance of another, he found love in prison.

But that appears to be over, according to his attorney. Joran van der Sloot, the 36-year-old suspect in the unsolved 2005 disappearance of Alabama high school student Natalee Holloway, is getting divorced.

He married Leidy Figueroa in a prison ceremony while serving a 28-year sentence for the brutal murder of Stephany Flores, a Peruvian business student whom he met at a casino and later beat to death in his hotel room.

Figueroa was seven months pregnant at the time of their wedding.

He told her he wanted to marry her all over again once his sentence was up, The Associated Press reported at the time.

But she is calling it quits with van der Sloot, who went on to face charges of trafficking drugs inside prison with the help of another girlfriend, his lawyer Maximo Altez told Fox News Digital.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - A federal magistrate has appointed the federal public defender’s office to represent Joran van der Sloot as he faces federal wire fraud and extortion charges related to an alleged attempt to extort $250,000 from the family of missing Mountain Brook teen Natalee Holloway.

Kevin Butler, the federal public defender for the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Alabama filed a petition with the court last Friday asking a judge to assign a public defender to van der Sloot because “Mr. van der Sloot has been in custody since approximately 2010 and is indigent. Therefore under the aforementioned authority and in the interest of justice, the undersigned respectfully requests this motion be granted.”

Federal Judge Gray Borden granted the motion Monday, setting in motion the process to provide van der Sloot a court-ordered public defender as he prepares for extradition proceedings to bring him to the U.S. from Peru, where he is serving a 28-year prison sentence for the murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramírez in 2010.

MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. – EXCLUSIVE: A prison "incident" at a mountaintop penitentiary in Peru has prevented Joran van der Sloot’s lawyer from speaking with him for nearly a week after news broke he would be extradited to the U.S. to face federal charges.

Lawyer Maximo Altez told Fox News Digital that a lockdown there has cut off the inmates' access to phones or any other type of communication other than in-person meetings.

As a result, Altez said he had not spoken with van der Sloot yet, and without the official go-ahead from his client, has not filed a habeas corpus petition that could "paralyze" his pending extradition to the United States on federal extortion charges.

Joran van der Sloot will not fight extradition to the U.S. to face charges he extorted thousands from Natalee Holloway’s mother.

That’s what his longtime Peruvian attorney Maximo Altez told the UK Daily Mail.

What’s more - the suspected killer of the Mountain Brook graduate plans to divorce his wife and marry a woman accused of smuggling drugs to him in jail, the lawyer said.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Altez said van der Sloot maintains he did not kill Natalee Holloway and “wants to ... prove he did not ask Ms. Holloway for money.”

“He realized he can be absolved of the charges,” Altez said.

A grand jury indicted him that year on one count each of wire fraud and extortion, each of which is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

But his attorney, Maximo Altez, has now made the extraordinary accusation that it was actually Natalee's mother, Beth, who approached van der Sloot offering money if he took her to her daughter's body.

'Joran wants to be extradited because he's innocent of the charges,' Altez told DailyMail.com. 'He was living his life in Aruba and got a call from Beth Holloway, who tricked him.

'She said: "Joran, tell me where the body is and I'll give you $250,000." He never asked for money, she's the one that offered.

'She even gave him an advancement and he never asked for the rest. He only got $25,000.'

Altez explained that his client is a 'sick person' and 'compulsive gambler', who 'needed the money to play at the casino'.

He claimed Mrs Holloway 'took advantage of him'.

Outlining a somewhat confusing case for the defense, Altez said his client admits he made up the location of Natalee's body, adding: 'He [van der Sloot] says if he's guilty of anything, it's fraud. But in reality he's a sick person.'

But he later clarified that the Dutchman 'is innocent of the two charges [of wire fraud and extortion]'.

The federal judge in the Alabama extortion case against Joran van der Sloot has recused herself from the case.

U.S. District Judge Karen Bowdre on Wednesday successfully sought the recusal, court records show. A reason for the request was not disclosed.

The case has been reassigned to U.S. District Judge Anna Manasco.

A Peruvian executive order last week paved the way for van der Sloot to be extradited to the U.S. to face charges he extorted thousands from Natalee Holloway’s mother.

There still is no finalized plan for the transfer and it’s unclear when he will arrive in the U.S.

EXCLUSIVE: Interpol officials will begin coordinating extradition plans Friday for Joran van der Sloot, the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway, according to the agency's Peruvian chief.
 
In a Thursday interview with Fox News Digital, Col. Carlos López Aeda, the chief of Interpol in Lima, Peru, said he's meeting with the FBI and officials with Peru's National Penitentiary Institute to discuss details of van der Sloot's extradition.

"The United States has already promised to return Joran after the process defined there. We are going to proceed with the extradition," López Aeda said. "[Friday], I meet with the FBI and the prison police to coordinate the details of their transfers and define the extradition date."

López Aeda added that while extraditions can be done through "a commercial flight," van der Sloot's extradition will "most likely" take place on a U.S. government airplane.

López Aeda told Fox News Digital the meeting with the FBI and Peru's National Penitentiary Institute will happen in person.

George Patriot Seymore, Beth Holloway's spokesperson, told Fox News Digital on Wednesday that the FBI is handling the extradition, which is happening "within a week." The FBI declined to comment.

EXCLUSIVE: An Interpol official says that Joran van der Sloot will be extradited from Peru by FBI agents in the first week of June.
 
In an interview with Fox News Digital after a meeting with the FBI and other Peruvian agencies, Col. Carlos López Aeda, the chief of Interpol in Lima, Peru, said that van der Sloot will be made available to U.S. authorities on May 29 for extradition.

"As of May 29, he will be available so that the U.S. authorities can transfer him to the United States," López Aeda said. "They have indicated that, during the first week of June, an FBI aircraft with FBI agents will come to extradite him from a Peruvian Air Force base."

The Interpol official said that the extradition shouldn't happen later than June 8 or 9.

He also said that van der Sloot will be transferred to a maximum security prison in Lima by May 25. Van der Sloot is currently being held at Challapalca Prison, which is almost a day's drive away from Lima.

Before van der Sloot is extradited, he'll undergo several medical tests, López Aeda said.

"We are going to carry out the medical procedures to certify Joran's good health, the COVID tests that even the staff who are going to transfer him have to do, those of us who are going to participate in the security convoy and guarantee that all his rights are respected so that everything is carried out in the fastest and most efficient way unless the defense presents some appeal which we highly doubt it,"  López Aeda said.

"That's all for now, we're ready, we've done all the coordination in detail, now 'the ball is in the side of the United States", let them come and extradite him,'" he added.

Joran van der Sloot has been “severely beaten” in a Peruvian jail, according to his lawyer.

ABC News quoted the lawyer for the 35-year-old van der Sloot, Maximo Altez, as saying that he does not believe the beating was related to his client’s expected extradition to the U.S. on extortion charges, but rather to gang rules inside the Callapalca Prison where he is currently being held.
 
According to Altez, van der Sloot is currently in the Peruvian prison’s medical aisle. The lawyer is requesting van der Sloot be moved to another prison for his own safety.

Joran van der Sloot, the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of American teen Natalee Holloway, was beaten in a Peruvian prison over the weekend, according to his lawyer, who is requesting better security for his client.
 
In a complaint filed Monday, Van der Sloot’s lawyer, Maximo Altez, claimed that his client was involved in an altercation over the weekend with another inmate and requested he be moved to a separate wing of the prison.

"Given Joran Van der Sloot’s public profile, there is legitimate concern regarding his safety inside the prison," Altez wrote. "It is necessary to ensure that he is not a victim of violence, assaults or any form of abuse by other inmates."

"It is essential to remember that all people, regardless of their background or crimes committed, they have the right to be treated with dignity and respect. The rehabilitation and reintegration into society are important objectives of the system prison, and providing a safe and secure environment is critical to achieving these ends."

Other officials, including from Interpol, say van der Sloot's alleged beating has not been confirmed and have urged skepticism until all the facts are known.

Earlier this month, the Peruvian government said it would allow van der Sloot to be extradited to the United States. An Interpol official previously told Fox News Digital the extradition shouldn’t happen later than June 8 or June 9.
