Plane carrying Joran van der Sloot, who is accused of extorting and defrauding Natalee Holloway’s mom, lands in US from Peru

By Josh Campbell and Steve Almasy, CNN
Updated 5:47 PM EDT, Thu June 8, 2023

Joran van der Sloot has landed in the United States, where he is accused of extorting money from the mother of Natalee Holloway, the Alabama teen who was last seen with the Dutch national and two others 18 years ago in Aruba.

FBI agents flew with van der Sloot on a US Department of Justice plane to an airport in Birmingham, Alabama, where he landed Thursday afternoon.

He was taken to a jail in Birmingham, not far from Holloway’s hometown of Mountain Brook.

He will be arraigned in federal court in Birmingham on Friday at 11 a.m. CT, according to court records.

Agents arrived in Peru – where van der Sloot is imprisoned for the murder of another woman – on Wednesday afternoon, a law enforcement source familiar with the operation told CNN.

The FBI used one of its planes in what it calls a foreign transfer of custody operation. Typically, the team comprises two FBI special agent pilots, at least one additional auxiliary crew member, and several agents providing security for the prisoner. In many long-haul flights, a medic also accompanies the team.

Prisoners are watched and wear restraints the entire time. The flight from Lima to Birmingham on the Gulfstream 550 took about six and a half hours.

Van der Sloot was seen leaving the Ancón 1 prison in Lima early Thursday, as he was driven away in a black van while in the custody of law enforcement. He arrived at Peru’s Air Force Base Grupo where officials have said he is expected to be handed over to the FBI.

On Friday at 11 a.m. in the Hugo L. Black Courthouse, van der Sloot is set for his initial court appearance and will begin what has been a long journey to justice in Alabama.

As van der Sloot spends his first night in Alabama, Natalee Holloway’s mother Beth released the following statement that reads in part:

“Today, as Joran van der Sloot’s extradition to the United States is finally realized, I am overcome with mixed emotions. As a mother who has tirelessly pursued justice for the abduction and murder of my precious daughter, I stand before you today with a heart both heavy with sorrow and yet lifted by a glimmer of hope.”

CBS 42 has obtained the following court record document containing information on van der Sloot’s indictment, which can be read below:

Joran van der Sloot, the chief suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway, pleaded not guilty on Friday to charges that he attempted to extort money from the missing teen’s mother.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Joran van der Sloot, the chief suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway, pleaded not guilty Friday to federal charges that he tried to extort money from the missing teen’s mother in exchange for revealing the location of her body.

Natalee’s mother, Beth Holloway, watched the brief proceeding from the third row of the courtroom. She stared occasionally at van der Sloot but showed no obvious emotion.

U.S. prosecutors say that in 2010, van der Sloot reached out to Beth Holloway, seeking $250,000 to lead her to the young woman’s body and reveal the circumstances of her death. A grand jury indicted him that year.

In 2012, van der Sloot pleaded guilty in Peru to killing 21-year-old Stephany Flores, a business student from a prominent Peruvian family. She was killed in 2010 — five years to the day after Holloway’s disappearance.

Joran van der Sloot case: Beth Holloway says 'wheels of justice' are beginning to turn after arraignment

Van der Sloot walked into the Birmingham courtroom confidently with a smirk on his face, with Beth Holloway's eyes on him for most of the arraignment.

"Now eighteen years later, the wheels of justice have finally begun to turn for our family and we are getting our long-awaited day in court," Beth Holloway said. "With the felony arraignment complete, prosecution of this criminal case has officially begun. Joran van der Sloot’s not guilty plea is not disheartening to us, it simply means that his legal team is going to try to make the state prove the case against him. We are confident the U.S. Attorney’s office in Birmingham, Alabama will succeed in getting a conviction, and we are very grateful to them for their hard work on this case."

"As I’ve said before, I was blessed to have had Natalee in my life for 18 years, and as of this summer, I have been without her for exactly 18 years. She would be 36 years old now. It has been a very long and painful journey, but we are finally getting justice for Natalee," she added.

Joran van der Sloot case: Natalee Holloway suspect's arraignment went 'exactly as expected,' experts say

His first appearance in federal court revealed no surprises. The court appointed a federal public defender, Kevin Butler; van der Sloot pleaded not guilty, and the judge ordered him held without bail.

Van der Sloot, who murdered 21-year-old Stephany Flores in Peru in 2010, is facing federal extortion and wire fraud charges for allegedly trying to sell Holloway's family the fake location of her remains for $250,000.

Magistrate Judge Gray Borden told van der Sloot he would only accept a not-guilty plea in the extortion and wire fraud case and that if the Dutch national were to decide to plead guilty, he could do so at a later date.

If he is convicted, he will return to American soil after his expected release in 2038 to serve up to 40 years in federal prison, although he might not receive the maximum, according to Lara Yeretsian, a defense attorney

Joran van der Sloot arraignment: Interpol slaps down claims Dutch embassy interfered with extradition
By Michael Ruiz , Armando Regil Velasco

EXCLUSIVE: A high-ranking law enforcement official in Peru is dismissing claims that Dutch authorities tried to hamper attempts to bring Natalee Holloway suspect and Dutch national Joran van der Sloot to the U.S. to face federal charges.

"The Dutch authorities have collaborated with us, that's why they made an emergency passport," Col. Carlos López Aeda, the chief of Interpol in Lima, Peru, told Fox News Digital on Friday.

However, he said, van der Sloot refused to receive or sign the passport, forcing immigration authorities to come up with an alternative and issue the convicted killer official exit documents.

"Everyone who leaves or enters has to follow the rules and procedures established by the immigration authorities," López Aeda explained. "The Embassy of the Netherlands did not interpose any obstacle or advise the defense at all, they only limited themselves to providing him with the passport that he rejected because he did not want to sign anything."

The colonel's remarks appear to directly contradict claims by van der Sloot's Lima-based defense attorney Maximo Altez, who said publicly that Dutch embassy officials had been interfering in a bid to halt or delay the extradition and urged the 35-year-old to fight extradition in a prison visit before he was placed in temporary U.S. custody.

A spokesperson for the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs previously told Fox News Digital they could not discuss individual matters.

"The Netherlands cannot interfere in the local legal process of another country," the spokesperson said. "We provide consular assistance, including visits, to all Dutch nationals in foreign detention who wish to do so."

Natalee Holloway family 'hoping for more answers' after Joran van der Sloot's extradition, spokesperson says
A spokesperson for the family of Natalee Holloway spoke to "GMA3."
ByABC NEWS
June 15, 2023, 5:02 PM

George Seymore, the Holloway family spokesperson, spoke to "GMA3" hosts Phil Lipof and Eva Pilgrim about what led up to the extradition and what the Holloway family is hoping for.

GMA 3: So this story has captured the public's attention for many years now. Can you just give us a sense of what was going on behind the scenes to make this extradition take place?

SEYMORE: Well, behind the scenes, we received a contact actually from Greta Van Susteren back in April, and my company was representing the government of Peru. So we worked with the government of Peru, the embassy and the leadership there in Peru to move this forward. And we're very excited that we're all here to face justice for Natalee, finally, after 18 long years.

GMA 3: Currently, van der Sloot is facing charges, two charges, extortion and fraud, but not murder. I'm wondering, how do these charges relate to Natalee's disappearance?

SEMOYRE: Well, they're unrelated to her disappearance, but these were the charges that were available to us, and we're hoping that the process would lead to more information in terms of Natalee's whereabouts, remains.

GMA 3: What is the Holloway family hoping for at this point?

SEYMORE: At this time, we're hoping for more answers. We're hoping that this process reveals some information. We hope that there will be some discovery that presents some more evidence to the ultimate disappearance of Natalee. And in terms of justice, the maximum sentence would be 40 years if convicted. And that would be, again, some resemblance for justice for the Holloway family.

Joran van der Sloot’s Mom Knows ‘She Can’t Help Him Anymore’ After Extradition to US (Exclusive)
Anita van der Sloot's support for her son lasted for years — but a family friend says his arrival in the US to face trial may be the last straw
Published 06/19/23 05:08 PM ET|Updated 8 hr ago
Steve Helling

In 2010 — the same year his father died — van der Sloot was accused of killing Peruvian business student Stephany Flores.

After a conviction, he began serving a 28-year murder sentence in Peru. During that time, his mother visited her son and sent him multiple letters, according to jail records.

But van der Sloot's recent extradition to the U.S., where he is expected to face trial for two federal counts of extortion and wire fraud, may be the final straw for Anita — even if her son has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

"It has all become too much," a family friend tells The Messenger. "How many times can he get into trouble and have her defend him? She knows she can't help him anymore."

For those who knew the family, Anita's unwavering faith in her son over the years was astonishing.

"Joran's parents always believed everything he told them," a neighbor, Maaike Vries, tells The Messenger. "When [Holloway] disappeared, they were convinced that he was being set up and that he had nothing to do with it. It was denial."

Things began to shift as Joran repeatedly got in trouble in prison.

Those close to Anita's family noticed that she no longer talked about her infamous son Joran. "It was like he didn't exist anymore," says Vries. "She didn't ever talk about him."

In a 2010 interview with ABC News, Anita called her son a "sneaky liar" and habitual gambler who would sneak out to visit the casinos. She mused that perhaps he should have become an actor.

But still, she supported him.

Now 35, van der Sloot sits in an Alabama prison, awaiting trial on U.S. soil.

Joran van der Sloot was processed into Shelby County Jail in Alabama on June 8 after an extradition flight from Peru.Shelby County Jail
He was indicted in the U.S. by a federal grand jury on extortion and wire fraud charges related to the Holloway disappearance in 2010.

Prosecutors allege in the indictment that he attempted to extort Natalee's mother, Beth Holloway, for $250,000 in return for information about how her daughter died and the location of her body.

According to emails obtained by The Messenger, van der Sloot was in touch with an attorney representing Holloway, John. Q. Kelly, about the alleged plan to exchange the information for cash.

During a meeting in Aruba between the two men, van der Sloot collected a portion of the funds while more was delivered by wire transfer, according to the 2010 indictment.

Van der Sloot "did identify that location as the site where Natalee Holloway's remains were buried" during the meeting, the indictment reads.

But no remains were ever found. "The information, as the defendant then knew, was false," alleges the indictment, which was filed June 30, 2010, in Birmingham, Ala.

Holloway was legally declared dead by a judge in 2012.

Van der Sloot's mother has not publicly commented on her son's arrival in the U.S.

"I have nothing to say," a woman who answered a phone belonging to Anita van der Sloot told The Messenger. "Please don't call here again."

"It's tragic," says Vries of the despair the van der Sloot family has experienced for nearly two decades.

"They were a thriving family until 2005, and then it's just been tragedies, all because of Joran. He really did break his mom's heart. And now she's lost him forever."

But Holloway's family considers van der Sloot's June 8 extradition something of a relief.

"She would be 36 years old now," Beth Holloway said in a statement of her daughter. "It has been a very long and painful journey, but the persistence of many is going to pay off. Together, we are finally getting justice for Natalee."

They read his confession on the radio about an hour ago. I was in the car. I cried. I do believe it but if he put her body in the ocean that means the video we all saw of the searchers holding what looked to be Natalee's top very likely was her top! They would have found SOMETHING of her body. I have to believe if this is the truth, that the police did find her and they got rid of her. And then proceeded to torture her family. I don't know how I feel but I can't stop thinking about Beth and Dave. I'm just glad that they can finally stop now. So much. So much time and heartbreak. All those years. Sorry I'm rambling. I didn't believe we'd ever be here. Love you Monkeys!
