Rescue 5 rig from 9/11 -- 'a piece of Staten Island history' -- returns for Aug. 25 charity event
August 18, 2013

The Rescue Co. 5 rig was last seen turning onto West Street, smoke and flames engulfing the Twin Towers behind it. Today, it has a new life as a mobile memorial for the Remembrance Rescue Project, a Chicago-based nonprofit formed by firefighters around the country to help children understand what took place on the blue-sky Tuesday morning of Sept. 11, 2001. STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Eleven firefighters from Rescue Co. 5 jumped onto the rig when the call came in and sped over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. One final image shows them turning onto West Street, black smoke and flames engulfing the World Trade Center.

Their ash-covered truck returned empty to the Concord firehouse the next day, all 11 firefighters gone.

Today, it has a new life as a mobile memorial for the Remembrance Rescue Project, a Chicago-based nonprofit formed by firefighters around the country to help children understand what took place on Sept. 11, 2001.

On Aug. 25, the truck will make its first return to Staten Island -- it will be the centerpiece at Bikers for Bini, which will feature a motorcycle run, classic car show, monster trucks, food, vendors, raffles and a performance by former New York Yankee star Bernie Williams at the Staten Island Mall from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The event is hosted by the Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund, named in memory of the 44-year-old Rescue Co. 5 firefighter.

"This is a piece of Staten Island history that survived," said Massimo DiDonna, chairman and president of the Memorial Fund and Bini's son-in-law.
