A 39-year-old Bethlehem outdoor adventurer who teaches math in the Nazareth Area School District has been missing for two weeks near a California resort town that is surrounded by mountains.

Matthew B. Greene, of the 200 block of Eighth Avenue, was last in contact with family July 16, the Mammoth Lakes Police Department said this morning on its Facebook page. He was staying at the Shady Rest Campground while his vehicle was being repaired at a local shop, police said. He has not returned to the campground, where he paid through July 17, or picked up his car, police said

He is an avid hiker, rock and ice climber, friends and family told police. He arrived about June 27 in Mammoth Lakes "to hike, camp, and conquer peaks in the Eastern Sierra," police said. He was traveling with a friend and they climbed some peaks near Mammoth Lakes, Detective Doug Hornbeck said. But the friend moved on to their next stop when Greene's car broke down July 6, Hornbeck said.

Police received a missing persons report Monday after the friend's wife contacted authorities, concerned when she couldn't contact Greene. The Mono County Search and Rescue Team has been advised, police said. But without a location, the team cannot begin a search, police said.

Police are hoping anyone who saw or heard from Greene contacts them at 760-934-2011 or the Mono County Sheriff’s Office at 760-932-6549 X7. Greene's friends are getting out a similar message on social media, Hornbeck said.

Nazareth Area teacher Matthew Greene's disappearance continues to baffle friends, family

Matthew Greene, a popular math teacher, vanished while on a backpacking trip in California last month. Police say Greene was there to hike and climb the Eastern Sierra, a region that features extremely steep and rugged terrain, with many peaks soaring to 12,000 and 13,000 feet.

His disappearance has baffled friends and family who call Greene a highly experienced, cautious outdoorsman.

“It just doesn’t seem to me that he would go out for a day hike and not return,” said his sister, Tiffany Minto. “We can’t visualize him getting himself into any kind of dangerous situation. He’s the personality type who would just turn back if it was too dangerous.”

Some of his gear was discovered to be missing, and several pages were torn out of his guidebook, leading to speculation that he might have headed in that direction for a hike.

Several of Greene’s friends flew to California and canvassed bus drivers, store owners, librarians and others in Mammoth Lakes, posted fliers at trailheads, checked summit registers and spent several days in the back country looking for clues. The search has gone airborne, too, with a helicopter flying over the rugged terrain and one of Greene’s friends shooting high-resolution video from a private plane. California search-and-rescue personnel have also volunteered their time.

Minto said she’s thinking about hiring a private investigator “just to exhaust every possible avenue.” And fundraisers are being held to pay for additional search-and-rescue efforts. (Information on those are available on the "Find Matthew Greene" Facebook page.)

Glasses that could be missing teacher Matthew Greene's found

http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/local&id=9217784

Quote
A California hiker has recovered a pair of eyeglasses that might belong to a Pennsylvania teacher who's been missing in the Eastern Sierra for more than a month.

The sister of 39-year-old Matthew Greene says a hiker found the glasses hanging on a sign at a trailhead near the Inyo Craters region of the Eastern Sierra.

The glasses have been turned over to the Mammoth Lakes Police Department, which is investigating Greene's disappearance.

Missing Nazareth teacher Matthew Greene's prescription doesn't match recovered glasses
on August 26, 2013 at 6:10 PM, updated August 26, 2013 at 8:00 PM

A pair of glasses found in the Mono–Inyo Craters region of California don't belong to missing Nazareth Area High School teacher Matthew Greene, his mother said today.

Patricia Greene said the black wire-rimmed glasses -- found late last week near the area where Greene went missing last month during a backpacking trip in California -- don't have a prescription similar to Matthew Greene's. They are glasses normally bought off a drugstore rack, she said.

Search Continues for Missing Lehigh Valley Teacher
August 26, 2013 3:31 PM

Search and rescue crews are facing a tough job.

“The difficulty they’re having is without knowing a departure point where Matthew took off into the mountains, there’s no where to search because there’s hundreds and hundreds of square miles just in our county,” says Dan Watson, chief of police in Mountain Lakes, the last place Greene was seen.

Watson says two other counties nearby have just as much. On Friday, a local hiker found a pair of glasses which investigators thought might be Greene’s. However, it turned out they were over the counter reading glasses, and not Greene’s prescription pair.

Police: Glasses found not those of missing Bethlehem man
11:00 a.m. EDT, August 27, 2013

Greene hasn't answered his cellphone since speaking to his parents in July. He was waiting in Mammoth Lakes for repairs to his car, and left behind almost all of his gear and guidebooks at his camp site, according to friends and family posting on the Facebook page.

Since then, his disappearance has generated interest across the country as national news stories and social media spread the story.

The family pieced together the events leading up to the disappearance. His car broke down July 16 and he told his parents it would be in a Mammoth Lakes repair shop for a few days. He said he would take a bus to trail heads in the meantime. His hiking friends left but he waited for his car to be repaired. He made a credit card purchase that day and hasn't used his credit card since.

Police asked Greene's parents if they knew in which part of the 1,169-square-mile Yosemite Park he might be hiking. His father, Robert Greene, said Matthew was starting many of his hikes at Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite.

Patricia Greene, Matthew's mother, said authorities haven't found evidence of foul play but haven't ruled it out either
.

Police asked that anyone with information on Greene's whereabouts in July call Mammoth Lakes police at 760-934-2011 or the Mono County Sheriff's Office at 760-932-6549, ext. 7.

Find Matthew Greene
August 28.

A very special thank you to Dean Rosnau, Dean has traveled to the end of the world to look for a person whom he never met. He and his partners have been our ‘boots on the ground’ to Find Matthew Greene.

Braving the cold, a neck injury, and some of the most dangerous terrain in the world, he has sacrificed his time, health, job and family to aid us and push us forward. We would not be where we are without his efforts.

Dean has participated in over 700 Search and Rescue missions throughout his life, saving many lives, and losing many along the way while risking his own life and asking nothing in return.

Dean searches for Greene
30 Aug, 2013

“… after hearing that Matthew had discussed the Michael Minaret area as well as the Ritter/Banner cirque … had mentioned wanting to get on some ice and snow … and had left his campsite with only his boots, crampons and ice axe (no bivy gear), I felt a strong leaning towards the Ritter/Banner theory. Frankly, it’s what I would have done had I been in Matthew’s position of wanting a fun, full value day in the mountains, and from all reports, the mileage was well within his capability.”

Eastern Sierra long-time local Dean Rosnau wrote this in an Aug. 16 post on www.supertopo.com. Rosnau, who has 39 years of climbing experience as well as search and rescue experience dating back to 1984 has taken a few trips to the Ritter Range in the past month to look for the remains of Matthew Greene. Greene is the 39-year-old teacher from Pennsylvania who was reported missing July 29 after he did not meet up with friends as planned.

While Rosnau came up empty-handed during this search as he had in his previous searches in the Ritter Range, he claimed he had the feeling that Matthew was there.

“I’ve been at this search and rescue thing for a long-time and you do get feelings,” he said. “I’m convinced that’s where he went but that doesn’t mean I’m right.”

Rosnau said he currently speaks with Matthew’s family on an almost daily basis.

“His family has largely accepted that he’s dead, and understands the magnitude of the area,” Rosnau said. “But as a parent without a body, you would always wonder.”

Nazareth trades in blue in honor of missing teacher
Published: Aug 30 2013 10:00:13 PM EDT   Updated On: Aug 30 2013 10:34:57 PM EDT

NAZARETH, Pa. -
School's back in session, and that means it's time for Friday night lights. At Nazareth Area High School the joy of the start of football season is mingled with apprehension and concern. Concern for someone who's not just missing out on the fun, he's actually missing. Math Teacher Matthew Greene.

Here in Northampton County, students weren't sporting the usual blue and white pride. The home season opener was all about the color green. Organizers hope their "green-out" will support the efforts for Mister Greene and lift the heavy hearts in the community.

Searches are still underway for Matthew on the West Coast, and there are ways you can help.

"Hopefully people will give donations," Casciole said. "I know that there's independent search parties that need funding."

Matthew Greene Now Missing 49 Days
September 02, 2013 at 05:26 PM

Nazareth Area High School Principal Alan Davis wanted parents and guardians to know up front before the school year started about missing math teacher Matthew Greene.

In a letter dated Aug. 25, Davis said "it is important we acknowledge the status" of Greene.

Davis told parents about Greene's disappearance on a hiking and camping expedition with some friends.

"At this time, we have no new or definitive information to share regarding his status," Davis said.

Davis said that the administration and counseling department are prepared to assist students and staff regarding Greene's disappearance.

He also said that provisions have been made to cover all of Greene's math classes and homeroom by certified and qualified math teachers.

Glasses found were thought to be Greene's but turned out not to be.

Davis said that the school district has been in contact with Greene's family regarding communication of his status to the public.

"Please keep Mr. Greene and his family in your thoughts," Davis's letter concludes.

It won't be long until winter approaches and snow falls in Mammoth Lakes. If there are any locals or anyone heading out there that is willing to search, please let me know via PM. We could distribute some of the 'want-to-search' areas amongst them.

Furthermore, I know some people have wondered why family hasn't been out to Mammoth Lakes. Believe me, if we had the extra $, time off work, and were in any shape to go look ourselves we would have been there 2 months ago. But, having said that, we're honestly not in that kind of position; not to mention we would be liabilities ourselves. We are doing all we can from home, with what resources we have, and I hope everyone can understand and respect that.
