Washington Navy Yard shooting: Victims' names will not be released for 24 hours
September 16, 2013 - 10:05 pm

The Washington Post is reporting that the Navy will wait 24 hours before releasing the names of people killed in the attack, according to Pentagon officials.

As of about 8:30 p.m. on Monday evening, Navy officials said 2,000 people remained on base, and that it may take another few hours before everyone is cleared to leave.

The FBI is still interviewing those leaving the base, due to the fact that the second suspect could still be on the loose.

According to the Post, SWAT teams are still finding people hiding on the base, where they have been since earlier this morning during the attack.

Washington Navy Yard shooting: Vigil held Monday night
By Stephen Tschida September 16, 2013 - 10:37 pm

WASHINGTON (WJLA) -- As the flags were raised to half-staff, the wicks on candles lit up on Monday night as a small group of people gathered in Freedom Plaza to remember those who died in that morning’s fatal shootings.

Some who attended said they heard about it and decided to join to express their shock at something like this happening in the nation’s capital. For others, they had relatives in the military or who work in the federal government, and this vigil provided a way to show solidarity with those grieving.

"We wanted to show support with people who lost their lives, the families that survived, and gratitude that our families are still in tact," said District resident Lauren Adkins.

Others expressed another reason why they wanted to come out on this night of tragedy: to express the city's and their resilience.

Police believe Navy vet acted alone in DC shooting rampage that killed 12
Published September 17, 2013

Aaron Alexis, believed to be the lone gunman in the killing of 12 people at a Navy building in Washington Monday morning, was a Navy veteran from New York with a troubled past who was arrested in two previous shooting incidents.

Alexis, 34, who was discharged from the Navy two years ago after serving hitches in Texas and Illinois, sprayed bullets from the fourth floor down to the cafeteria area in the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters in southeast Washington in an attack that began just after 8 a.m. Alexis died later as he traded shots with responding police, though it was not clear if he killed himself or was brought down by cops.

At a late night news conference, Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier said she was confident that Alexis was the "single and sole person responsible" despite earlier reports of a possible second shooter.

Navy Yard shooter collected VA disability benefits
September 18, 2013

WASHINGTON — Washington Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis collected $395 a month in veteran's disability payments.

::snipping3::He enlisted in the Navy in 2007, didn't deploy to Iraq or Afghanistan and received an honorable discharge in 2011.

During that four-year hitch, Alexis developed an orthopedic problem and ringing in the ears, according to the Veterans Affairs Department. Those conditions rendered him 30% disabled and entitled him to the monthly payments.

He enrolled in VA health care in February 2011. Records show he never sought an appointment with a mental health specialist. He also canceled or failed to show up for primary care appointments and claims evaluations examinations he had scheduled at VA Medical Centers.

Navy orders probe of DC rampage as shooter's remains released
September 26, 2013

The Navy ordered an investigation into the deadly Washington Navy Yard shooting on Thursday, and the D.C. medical examiner released the gunman’s remains.
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus issued a memo ordering the in-depth probe, which will include a detailed review of the events leading up to the shooting in which Aaron Alexis, a former petty officer, was able to enter the Navy Yard with a shotgun and roam the halls looking for targets.
The investigation will also look into the shooter’s mental health background as well as his military record, The Associated Press reported.
The FBI is also conducting its own criminal probe of the case.
Burning questions remain on circumstances surrounding the shooting, including whether Alexis’ employer, a Hewlett-Packard subcontractor, The Experts, had warned the military about concerns about Alexis’ mental stability.
Navy officials have said they could find no record the company alerted the Navy.
