Washington, D.C., TV station WTTG-TV quoted liberally from police scanners on its Twitter account during coverage of a mass shooting Monday at D.C.’s Navy Yard.

Quoting from police scanners during a breaking news situation may be tempting, but it’s a really bad idea, as the information passing through such devices is not confirmed (and authorities generally don’t have time to confirm it).

During the Boston Marathon bombings manhunt, a “false-information feedback loop” occurred after police repeated bad information they’d seen on Twitter.

“Most responsible journalists don’t report as fact what they hear on the scanner,” Poynter’s Kelly McBride said at the time.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has sent a team of about 20 special agents to help authorities as they work to contain a shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, a law enforcement official told CNN's Evan Perez Monday. The team is the same one that helped apprehend Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the official said.

The Pentagon "believes there has been loss of life" in a shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, Pentagon spokesman George Little told CNN on Monday. He had no other details.

Two law officers among 10 people injured in naval facility shooting
(CNN) -- A gunman dressed in all black fired shots Monday inside the U.S. Navy Yard, injuring at least 10 people, according to the Navy and a Washington police spokesman.
The U.S. Navy tweeted there are "several confirmed injuries with reports of fatalities."
The injured included a Washington police officer who has been hospitalized, and a base security guard officer, said Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman Saray Leon.

Navy spokesman: 2 suspects 'down' after deadly shooting at Naval Yard

Washington (CNN) -- [Breaking news update at 11:44 a.m. Monday]
Three patients -- one man and two women -- admitted to MedStar Washington Hospital Center had multiple gunshot wounds, resulting in "severe injuries," chief medical officer Janis Orlowski said Monday. The injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, she said.

Two suspected shooters "are down" at the Washington Navy Yard, according to Ed Zeigler, director of Public Affairs for Naval District Washington. Zeigler was not able to confirm whether the suspected gunmen had been taken into custody or killed.
"Multiple" people have been killed in the shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, Zeigler told CNN's Dan Merica.

Washington Navy Yard shooting: Active shooter sought in Southeast D.C.

WASHINGTON - (WJLA) At least eight people were killed Monday morning when a person or persons opened fire inside a building at the Washington Navy Yard, law enforcement sources confirm to ABC7.
D.C. D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said one gunman in the Navy Yard shooting is dead. But she said there are potentially two additional shooters on the loose.

She said one of the potential additional shooters is described as a white male in a khaki tan military uniform who was armed with a handgun. He was last seen at about 8:30 a.m.

A second potential shooter is described as a black male in his 50s, also armed and wearing a military-style uniform.

Lanier said one MPD officer was shot and wounded by the shooter.
