And this is one of the reasons I've been trying my best to use reliable sources, but even that is dicey at times. Some media is so desperate to get the scoop/be the first, they fail to take the time to verify/confirm.  JMHO

NBC, CBS quickly retract ID of Navy Yard shooter
September 16, 2013

Once again, major news organizations have blundered on a huge crime story.

NBC News and CBS News today identified a suspect in the carnage at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., then rapidly retracted the story.

The embarrassing episode was reminiscent of similar overzealous reporting during the Boston Marathon massacre, when a number of news outlets prematurely reported that an arrest had been made.

CBS and NBC reported what they said was the name of the suspect in today's D.C. shooting. But very quickly they basically said, "Never mind."

At 12:58 p.m ET, Charlie Kaye of CBS took to Twitter to tweet, "BREAKING. @johnmillercbs advises the initial reports identifying the suspected shooter as Rollie Chance are wrong."

Seven minutes later, NBC's chief White House correspondent, tweeted, "NBC News: we are now NOT reporting name of shooter; retracting that report. deleting those tweets."

At least 12 dead, suspects sought in Navy shooting
September 16, 2013

A federal law enforcement official said authorities were questioning one man whose identity emerged after police killed a gunman armed with an AR-15, a shotgun and a handgun. The man's connection with the shooter, if any, was not immediately clear.

The federal official, who requested anonymity due to the fluid nature of the investigation, said there is no evidence that anyone other than the dead gunman, fired weapons in the attack. The official said investigators were analyzing surveillance video and other information that revealed two people--one white male and a black man--who were both dressed in military style uniforms.

"What we lack is a sighting of somebody shooting, other than the dead shooter,'' said the official who is not authorized to comment publicly.

12 dead, suspects sought in Navy shooting
September 16, 2013

WASHINGTON -- Twelve people were killed and several others wounded Monday when a gunman identified as Aaron Alexis, 34, of Forth Worth, opened fire at the Navy Yard, authorities said.

Washington Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier said one shooter was dead and one police officer was wounded in an "engagement" with at least one gunman at Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters. Federal officials identified the dead shooter as Alexis.

Lanier said authorities have "multiple" pieces of information indicating there could have been more shooters. She police were searching for a black man between 40 and 50 years old wearing an olive drab military-style uniform and carrying a long gun, Lanier said.

A federal law enforcement official said police killed Alexis, who was armed with an AR-15, a shotgun and a handgun. The federal official, who requested anonymity due to the fluid nature of the investigation, said there is no evidence that anyone other than the dead gunman fired weapons in the attack. The official said investigators were analyzing surveillance video of the shooting.

Gunman ID'd in D.C. Navy Yard Shooting That Killed at Least 12
Aaron Alexis, 34, of Fort Worth, Texas is among the dead

Monday, Sep 16, 2013  |  Updated 4:16 PM EDT

At least 12 people are dead after a shooting Monday morning in a heavily secured building at the D.C. Navy Yard, and authorities now say they have identified the gunman.

The shooting was one of the worst mass shootings on a U.S. military base in recent history, following the November, 2009 murder of 13 people at Fort Hood in Texas.

The gunman, 34-year-old Aaron Alexis of Fort Worth, Texas, is among the 12 dead. Officials said he recently began working as a civilian contractor.

The FBI, which now is leading the investigation, believes the gunman used the identification of a man who used to work at Navy Yard, reported Pete Williams of NBC News. The ID was found next to the gunman's body in Building 197, where most of the victims were shot on the third and fourth floors.

People with proper badges are allowed to enter Navy Yard without having their bags checked, Williams reported.

Multiple weapons

Survellance video shows the gunman entered the building at the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters, at 1336 Isaac Hull Ave., with a shotgun, News4's Jackie Bensen reported.

He shot the security guard in the head, killing him. The shooter then continued through the building, and seemed to target his victims, who were mostly on the third and fourth floors.

D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department and several other law enforcement agencies responded, Bensen said. During that response, a MPD officer was shot in the leg.

The gunman was then shot by a FBI hostage response team, Bensen said.

According to what witnesses are telling investigators, by the time the shootings ended, the gunman was seen with a semiautomatic 9 mm pistol and an AR-15 assault rifle. Authorities are investigating whether the gunman took the security guard’s service weapon – likely a 9 mm pistol – and hid in wait for the first responding D.C. police officers, who would be specially armed with AR-15s.

D.C. police had said earlier Monday that they were seeking two other "possible" gunmen. Investigators later ruled them out as suspects by watching video that tracked them through the building, and realizing that no harm resulted from their movements.

Williams noted that many people are authorized to carry firearms at Navy Yard.

Washington Navy Yard shooting: Aaron Alexis identified as shooter
September 16, 2013 - 08:31 am
Updated: September 16, 2013 - 04:27 pm

WASHINGTON (WJLA) - At least 13 people were killed Monday morning when a Fort Worth, Tex. man opened fire inside a building at the Washington Navy Yard.

The gunman in the Navy Yard shooting, Aaron Alexis, 34, is dead. But D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said authorities are still searching for one person, described as a black male in his 50s, also armed and wearing a military-style olive green uniform.

Lanier said one MPD officer was shot and wounded by the shooter. He suffered gunshot wounds to his legs. A base officer was also wounded in the shooting.

Gray said a motive is still unknown in the rampage. He added that that terrorism can't be ruled out but said he has no reason to believe the shooting is terrorism-related.

Aaron Alexis named as Washington Navy Yard shooter: senior law enforcement official
Last Updated: 13/09/16 5:04 PM ET

WASHINGTON — Aaron Alexis, 34, of Fort Worth Texas is allegedly the shooter in a rampage at heart of a U.S. Navy complex in Washington that left at least 13 people dead Monday.

President Barack Obama said he is mourning “yet another mass shooting” and called it a “cowardly act.”

Officials said at least four people were wounded — three critically — in the rampage at the Washington Navy Yard, including a law enforcement officer. The New York Times reports that one police officer was in surgery after being shot by the gunman.

Alexis was believed to have a criminal record in Texas and said he may have gotten into the Navy Yard by using someone else’s identification card. The two officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. Alexis was identified through his finger prints.

The shooting led to tightened security at the Capitol and White House nearby, including shutting down the Senate while a possible remaining shooter was sought. D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier announced the death toll and said people were being told to stay in their homes and out of the area.

Lanier said there was no indication of a possible motive.

The shooter was a Navy employee whose work status had been changed earlier this year, said a federal government official who spoke only on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak on the record. While that may suggest the motive was job related, authorities haven’t ruled out anything including terrorism, the official said.

The New York Times reports that Alexis was enlisted full-time as a reservist in 2007 and then left the service in early 2011. The highest rank he achieved was mate third class and he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
