Washington Navy Yard shooting: Aaron Alexis identified as shooter
September 16, 2013 - 08:31 am
Updated: September 16, 2013 - 06:27 pm

WASHINGTON (WJLA) - At least 13 people were killed Monday morning when a Fort Worth, Tex. man opened fire inside a building at the Washington Navy Yard.
The gunman in the Navy Yard shooting, Aaron Alexis, 34, is dead. But D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said authorities are still searching for one person, described as a black male in his 50s, also armed and wearing a military-style olive green uniform.

Lanier said one MPD officer was shot and wounded by the shooter. He suffered gunshot wounds to his legs. A base officer was also wounded in the shooting.

Gray said a motive is still unknown in the rampage. He added that that terrorism can't be ruled out but said he has no reason to believe the shooting is terrorism-related.

“We had a horrific tragedy,” said Gray. "This is an isolated incident and an active investigation."

Washington Navy Yard shooting: Aaron Alexis identified as shooter

September 16, 2013 - 08:31 am
Updated: September 16, 2013 - 06:27 pm

FBI identified Aaron Alexis as shooter

Alexis was a 34-year-old from Texas. He is believed to have a criminal record there and to be a holder of a concealed carry weapon permit.

He was a full-time Navy reservist, based in Texas, when he left service in 2011.

Alexis had been working for the fleet logistics support squadron No. 46, in Fort Worth, Texas. The Navy says his home of record was New York City.

The military reports he enlisted on May 5, 2007. He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

That official says Alexis is believed to have gotten into the Navy Yard by using someone else's identification card. It is not yet clear if that individual was an accomplice or if that person's ID card was stolen.

Navy Yard shooter had record in Fort Worth
Charged with illegally shooting a firearm

By    John Moritz

Published: Monday, September 16, 2013, 4:06 PM CDT

(KXAN) - Aaron Alexis, the man identified as the gunman responsible for a dozen deaths Monday at the Washington Navy Yard, had been arrested on a weapons charge in his one-time hometown of Fort Worth, according to accounts.

Media outlets in the Dallas-Fort Worth area said Alexis, a former non-commissioned officer in the navy who was killed several hours after he had started shooting, was charged with illegally discharging a firearm in 2010 by Fort Worth police.

According to summary of the incident posted on NBC5's website, police were called to an apartment complex when a woman reported that a bullet had been fired from a unit beneath hers. The bullet has missed the woman by only a few feet, the report said.

The narrative said Alexis, who lived in the unit below, had called police on his neighbor several times complaining about noise. The neighbor told police "that she is terrified of Aaron and feels that the (firing of the shot) was done intentionally."

After police gained entry to his apartment, Alexis told them the gun had fired accidently while he was cleaning it.

The Navy said Alexis enlisted on May 5, 2007 and had served in Fort Worth and in Illinois. He earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Alexis left the Navy on Jan. 31, 2011, with the rank of petty officer third class.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Alexis  had been stationed at Naval Air Station Fort Worth. He also had worked as a waiter at a local restaurant, the newspaper said.

A former roommate told the Star-Telegram he was stunned by Monday's events.

“I don’t think he’d do this" the roommate said in the Star-Telegram report. "He has a gun, but I don’t think he’s that stupid. He didn’t seem aggressive to me.”

He is to be a holder of a concealed handgun permit, the Associated Press said.

Washington Navy Yard shooting: Rollie Chance home in Stafford visited by FBI
By Greta Kreuz September 16, 2013 - 05:44 pm

STAFFORD, Va. (WJLA) -- Throughout Monday afternoon, FBI agents came and went from the two-story brick home of Rollie Chance, who was initially identified as the shooter before Aaron Alexis was confirmed as the suspect.

The blinds were closed and black material placed over the windows at the home, located in the Amy Clay subdivision in Stafford. The family dog barked inside.

Chance and his wife Shawna live here and have two daughters – one is reportedly in grad school and the other is college-aged. Neighbors say that the Chances have lived here for at least half a dozen years, and that any connection at all to the Navy Yard shootings would be a complete shock to them.

Fort Worth man, 34, accused of shootings in Navy Yard
Posted Monday, Sep. 16, 2013

FORT WORTH — The man suspected of killing 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard, identified as Aaron Alexis of Fort Worth, left the Navy in 2011.

Alexis, 34, was fatally shot after a gunbattle with police at the site of Monday’s shooting in Washington, D.C., The Associated Press reported. Police say they do not have a motive for the shootings.

Nutpisit Suthamtewakul, owner of Happy Bowl Thai in White Settlement, said Alexis was “my best friend.”

“He lived with me three years,” Suthamtewakul said Monday afternoon. “I don’t think he’d do this. He has a gun, but I don’t think he’s that stupid. He didn’t seem aggressive to me.”

Upon learning of his death, Suthamtewakul said, “ ‘Wait, he’s dead? I call him, but he doesn’t answer phone.”

Alexis had been in the Navy from 2007 to 2011 and was most recently stationed at Naval Air Station Fort Worth, according to Lt. Cmdr. Sarah Blansett, a Navy spokeswoman in McLean, Va.

He worked as an aviation electrician’s mate, 3rd class, in the Navy Reserve’s Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 46, according to the Navy.

Friends said he left the Navy because he didn’t like to get up early and had complained about getting underpaid.

Alexis also worked at times as a waiter and deliveryman at Happy Bowl, customers said.

Alexis had recently visited Thailand and had been to Japan with a computer defense contractor, where he worked in information technology, said Sandy Guerra-Cline, a customer at Happy Bowl and copy editor at the Star-Telegram.

“He is not a guy that talked about guns or talked about anything violent,” Guerra-Cline said. “As a matter of fact, my best memories of him were of him sitting at one of the tables at Happy Bowl trying to teach himself Thai.”

Firearms charge in 2010

Police were dispatched to the Oak Hills apartments about 6:40 p.m. Sept 4, 2010, on a report that someone had fired a shot through the floor and into the ceiling of a woman’s apartment, according to a Fort Worth police report.

The woman told police she had been sitting in a chair when she heard a loud pop and saw dust.

“She then saw that there was a hole in her floor just a couple of feet from where she was sitting while shredding papers and a hole in the ceiling,” the report states. “She told me that she believed someone had shot a bullet through her apartment.”

The woman told police that Alexis, her downstairs neighbor, did not come up to check on her after the shooting.

She said that Alexis had called police on her several times in the past for “being loud” but that police never heard anything and therefore, no action was taken.

“She said that several days ago Aaron confronted her in the parking lot about making too much noise,” the report states.

The woman told police that she was “terrified” of Alexis and felt the shooting was done intentionally.

The report states police attempted to contact Alexis at his apartment but received no response.

Fearing someone could be hurt, police had called the Fire Department to the scene to attempt to force entry into the man’s apartment. When firefighters arrived on the scene, however, Alexis came outside voluntarily and told officers he had been cleaning his gun when it went off.

“He said that he was trying to clean his gun while cooking and that his hands were slippery. He told me that he began to take the gun apart when his hands slipped and pulled the trigger, discharging a round into the ceiling,” the report states.

“When asked why he didn’t call police or go check on the resident above him, Aaron said that he didn’t think it went all the way through since he couldn’t see any light through the hole,” the report states.

Alexis told police he thought people would dismiss the noise as a firecracker.

Police arrested Alexis at the scene on suspicion of discharging a firearm in a municipality, a Class A misdemeanor. He was released from jail the next day, Tarrant County records show, and was never formally charged in the case.

“After reviewing the facts presented by the police department, it was determined that the elements constituting recklessness under Texas law were not present and a case was not filed,” said Melody McDonald, a spokeswoman with the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office.

The Orion at Oak Hill apartments in Fort Worth began eviction efforts against Alexis later in September 2010. Records show that he moved from the Oak Hill apartments in December 2010.

‘Always very polite’

Alexis, whose most recent address was 7940 White Settlement Road in Fort Worth, had not lived there for six to eight months, said his landlord, Somsak Srisan.

“Oh boy, I can’t believe this,” Srisan said. “He was always very polite to me.”

Srisan believed Alexis lived alone at the White Settlement house.

“When he lived at my house, I never see him get angry about anything,” Srisan said. “My feeling is if he was angry about anything, he didn’t show that to me.”

He had seen Alexis meditate and said he always remained calm around him.

“I can’t believe he would do anything like this,” Srisan said. “He always behaved well around me.”

A friend said Alexis loved Buddhism.

“He loved to go to temple, go to meditate in Thai and English,” the friend said. “He could do both of them.”

Alexis had previously lived in Flushing, N.Y., from 2000 to 2002. It is unclear where he lived from 2002 until he moved to Fort Worth.

Redskins' Josh Morgan's mother at Navy Yard during shooting
September 16, 2013 - 06:53 pm

Redskins wide receiver Josh Morgan stood at his locker at Redskins Park Monday and had to fear the worst. His mother, a long time employee at the Navy Yard, could not be reached.
I called her like 30 times…and nobody could get in touch with her” said Morgan somberly.

At that time, Morgan’s mother, LaWanda Ware-Brown, was on lockdown and did not have her cell phone with her. She heard a series of gunshots before being rushed away – and placed in lockdown at a secure location.

Monday’s tragedy was not a first for Morgan and family. His mother was at the pentagon on 9/11 when the tragedy occurred and Josh was a senior at Virginia Tech in 2007 when a gunman killed 32 students and faculty members.

“We’re all too familiar with it…we just have to pray for the best” said Morgan

Thankfully, Josh’s mom is safe and sound. The lockdown was lifted and she was able to leave work late this afternoon and return home to her loved ones.

Navy vet ID'd as shooter in DC attack that killed 12 arrested in two other gun incidents
Published September 16, 2013

Aaron Alexis, the gunman suspected in the killing of 12 people at a Navy building in Washington Monday morning, has been identified as a Navy veteran from New York who was arrested in two previous shooting incidents.

Alexis, who was discharged from the Navy two years ago after serving hitches in Texas and Illinois, sprayed bullets from the fourth floor down to the cafeteria area in the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters in southeast Washington in an attack that began just after 8 a.m. Alexis, who may have used a stolen ID to get into the building, died later as he traded shots with responding police, though it was not clear if he killed himself or was brought down by cops.

Hewlitt Packard issued a statement Monday night saying that at the time of the shootings, Alexis worked for The Experts, a subcontractor on an HP Enterprise Services contract to refresh equipment used on the Navy Marine Corps Intranet network.

<snipped>

Alexis, 34, of New York, was a Navy aviation electrician's mate, third class, who spent time in Texas and Illinois before leaving the Navy in early 2011. It was not clear why he left or if he was voluntarily discharged. A senior defense official told Fox News he had a "history of misconduct."

While stationed in Fort Worth, he was arrested on Sept. 4, 2010, after an upstairs neighbor reported that he had fired shots up into her apartment. The neighbor said Alexis had often angrily confronted her about making too much noise, and she told police he scared her.

"[The neighbor] told me that she is terrified of Aaron and feels that this was done intentionally," the arresting officer wrote on the police report.

In 2004 he was arrested in Seattle for shooting out the tires of a construction worker's car in an incident he later described as "an anger-fueled blackout."

Man arrested for tossing firecrackers over White House fence
September 16, 2013
The Secret Service arrested a shoeless man for tossing firecrackers over a fence at the White House Monday night, just hours after at least one suspect opened fire inside the nearby Navy Yard killing 12 people before he died following a shootout with police.

Although the sounds outside the northwest gate were initially described as sounding like gunshots, a US Secret Service official said it was firecrackers and no gun was found.

Three uniformed Secret Service officers arrested the middle-aged man who had dark hair and wore a blue shirt and white shorts. His white shoes lay on the ground near where an officer tackled him.
