TOWN OF GENESSEE (WKOW) -- Authorities say they're not seeking anyone involved in the disappearance of a 15-year-old Waukesha County girl who turned up safe in Chicago.

Authorities believe Stalbaum left her home alone. Investigators are waiting to ask her detailed questions about why she went to Chicago, how she got there and what she did since she disappeared.

"We need to give Kathryn, the family and the detectives time to process the events of the last four days, it is important for the community to know that we are not looking for any other person or persons involved in this event at this time," says Inspector Eric Severson, with Waukesha County Sheriff's Office.

Severson says Stalbaum was reunited with her parents shortly after midnight.

"We were overwhelmed by the outpouring of love the community demonstrated during this time," the family said in a statement read by Inspector Eric Severson, while an aunt and uncle of Stalbaum's stood silently nearby. "We would also like the community to understand that the healing process has just begun and will be ongoing."

Authorities said they aren't actively looking to question others in Stalbaum's disappearance, but they would like to interview the girl further to get a full accounting of what happened. For now, they are moving cautiously.

"You don't rush into these things," Severson told reporters. "She is not a burglary suspect who was caught red-handed." He added that Stalbaum had been "happy and talkative" after returning home.

Authorities say she was alone when she disappeared and had interactions with people during her absence. It remains unclear how and when she got to Chicago and where she might have stopped along the way.

The four-day ordeal ended after she reportedly approached a police officer in downtown Chicago and asked for help.

Waukesha County Sheriff's officials said Sunday morning that they did not yet have any additional information to release.

And while students cheer the fact that Kathryn is safe, the superintendent is now making plans for her return and says she's talking to Kathryn's family.

But as they rejoice in her return, the fact remains that in her absence, this community worried sick about her. Now, they just want to know why.

"Yea it's nice to know that it's over but nobody really knows why she was gone and I guess that still kinda has people on edge," said Zac Preston, a student at Kettle Moraine.

"They're just talking about what happened to her, maybe she ran off, or was she kidnapped and other things like that, so it got pretty scary around here," said Andrew Roskopf, a concerned parent in the neighborhood.

Waukesha County Sheriff's Deputies on Monday said they're giving Kathryn time to open up and would not confirm nor deny at this point whether Kathryn ran away.

We also spoke with Chicago police on Monday.  They say Kathryn actually walked in to the District one police station on Friday evening and told them she was a missing person from Wisconsin.  They say she had no visible signs of injury.

That's when Chicago contacted the FBI, Waukesha deputies and Kathryn's family.

Public may never get details of Genesee teen's 4-day disappearance
Nov. 12, 2013 10:54 a.m.

Although her disappearance sparked a massive search of Waukesha County and southeast Wisconsin, the public may never know why Kathryn Stalbaum left her Town of Genesee home last Tuesday.

Authorities still are trying to determine why Stalbaum left town and ended up alone in Chicago four days later, and even when they conclude their investigation, they might not be able to release their findings because she is a juvenile, Deputy Jennifer Wallschlaeger, spokeswoman for the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department, said.

Investigators still are trying to confirm how Stalbaum got to Chicago by checking surveillance tapes, Wallschlaeger said.
