Chopper Searches for Missing Teen As Deputies Investigate False Lead
December 13, 2013

ALLEGAN, Mich. —Investigators with the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department questioned a teenager who made a post on Facebook claiming to know the whereabouts of a missing girl from Kalamazoo County.

In a news release from the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department Friday morning, Captain Frank Baker said deputies were dispatched to a Leighton Township home of a teenager.  The teenager posted on Facebook that Barry was at his residence, said Baker.  A search was conducted, but deputies did not find anything.

“The teenager at the home who posted it on Facebook did it as a prank; therefore, wasting the time of law enforcement.  I hope the family of the missing girl did not see his post on Facebook,” Baker said.

Meantime, FOX 17 confirmed Friday that a Michigan State Police helicopter was used to search for Barry.

If you’ve seen Marissa or know any information regarding her whereabouts, you’re asked to call Portage Department of Public Safety at 269-329-4567.

The Allegan County Sheriff’s Department has its own missing teenager investigation.  Deputies are looking for 16-year-old Kristy LaFountain of Martin.

Marissa Barry, Portage teen missing since Thursday, found 'conscious and alert'
on December 13, 2013 at 5:04 PM, updated December 13, 2013 at 5:05 PM

Barry was found around 3:30 p.m. Friday in woods near Maryland Court and Osterhout Avenue, said Portage Public Safety Sgt. Kevin Gleesing.

"She was conscious and alert," Gleesing said, but said he did not know her exact condition.

Gleesing said Barry was taken to an area hospital for treatment, but he did not know the extent of her injuries.

Helicopters had searched southeast of Portage for about two hours Thursday night and resumed the search this morning. Gleesing said the two people who found Barry happened upon her and had not been actively searching for her.

Police were concerned about her disappearance because she hasn't been taking her medication and she struggles with anxiety and depression.

Marissa was found less than a mile from her home. Water Department employees noticed the top of a tree moving in a wooded area near Marylynn Ct. They investigated the area and found Marissa Barry leaning against the tree.

Police believe Marissa Barry spent all Thursday night/Friday morning outdoors in single digit temperatures. She was wearing a coat, but it was described as a coat not much heavier than a sports jacket.

Marissa was taken to a Kalamazoo hospital and is being treated.

Portage Teen Recovering At Hospital After Possible Night In Woods
2 hours ago

Portage, Mich. — A 16-year-old from Portage is recovering Friday night at Bronson Hospital after possibly spending nearly 24 hours outdoors and in the woods.

She was moved to the ICU from the ER at about 5:30 on Friday.

Marissa Barry had been missing since Thursday afternoon.

Utility-water workers found her in a wooded area near a cul-de-sac about a mile from her home Friday afternoon.

They said they saw the trees moving strangely and they went to investigate.

Detectives said the workers found Marissa there, leaning against a tree and called police.

They said she was alert and talking, but wasn’t able to articulate very well, possibly due to her body temperature and lengthy exposure to the cold.

It’s presumed that she somehow walked into the wooded area at some point after she got home from school early Thursday.

Family members say Marissa left Portage Central High School at around 1:45 December, 12, following a confrontation with a friend.

Her mom said according to school employees, it was an emotional situation for her.

Carie Barry said her daughter also suffers from anxiety and depression and that increased her concern.

Marissa had left her wallet, keys and phone at the home when she disappeared.

Her stepfather Chuck Hoehn said she was in good spirits Friday night after she was brought in.

I'm so glad Marissa has been found safe!  My heart goes out to her and her family.  Mental health issues can be particularly trying, with the struggle sometimes lasting a life time.  I've seen cases where medication works for a time, and then there's a change, and it's no longer effective. Sometimes the cost or the side effects can cause individuals to stop taking their meds.   Counseling can be helpful in some cases, but there is often a shortage of counselors, it can be expensive and is often long term.  I hope Marissa and her family are able to get some assistance.  She could easily have died in the cold.

Missing Portage girl found in the woods
Saturday, December 14, 2013 7:51 a.m. EST

PORTAGE (WKZO) -- A portage teen is reported in fair condition this weekend recovering after spending a freezing night in the woods.

Family members say 16-year-old Marissa Barry had stopped taking her Medications for anxiety and depression, and was found clinging to a tree after spending a night in the woods outside in the freezing cold.

She was only partly coherent, barely able to stand up and suffering some symptoms of frostbite and exposure. She had been reported missing late Thursday.

Police say they doubt if she would have survived another night in the woods.

Family of missing girl utility works who found her
Updated: Saturday, December 14 2013, 11:14 AM EST

16-year-old Marissa Barry had been missing since Thursday afternoon, but two United Water employees found her around 3:00 pm Friday holding onto a tree in the woods near her home.

Barry is recovering tonight in Bronson Methodist Hospital.

The two men who found her stopped by Friday night and gave her flowers, knowing that the outcome of her ordeal could have been much worse.

Just thank you, gave them a hug and I said thank you, said Chuck Hoehn, Barry's stepfather, because if they hadn't been there and felt that something was wrong, she may not be here right now.

The utility workers who spotted Barry say they were on a break inside their work car when they spotted the girl. They say they were about to leave, but felt that she was in trouble and went to investigate.

Barry is now dealing with frostbite, but is talking to family in her hospital room, family that is clearly grateful for the efforts of those utility workers.

She probably doesn't remember too much from it, being exposed to the elements, just a little incoherent, not thinking straight but I'm sure things will come back and shell be just fine," said Hoehn, "and like I said before, if we don't have any other presents under the Christmas tree, this is all we need."

Newschannel 3 is told that Barry has frostbite on her hands and feet, but should be okay.
