23 year old Jonathan M. Schaff from Fairfield, VT has been missing since Saturday, January 18, 2014 in Granville, New York. Schaff was last seen around 4:30 a.m. after an altercation at Riverside Pub on Main Street in Granville. According to the Granville Police, Schaff suffered a cut to his head and his glasses were broken during the bar fight; however, he was not believed to have been seriously injured. Police said that Schaff  had been drinking, but it was unclear whether he was intoxicated. [Editors note, um, if you are drinking in a Granville bar and getting into a fight, you were intoxicated.] Schaff was last seen walking east on Main Street, wearing a gray hooded sweat shirt, brown Carhartt jacket and blue jeans. Schaff is described as 6 feet tall, 170 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair. Police said Schaff and two friends had parked a their car at Loomis Trucking, near the state line, and walked a half-mile or so to the Granville bar.

Anyone with information in the case was asked to call Granville Police at 642-1414 or Vermont State Police at 802-773-9101.

Police said Schaff and two friends had parked a car at Loomis Trucking, near the state line, and walked a half-mile or so to the Granville bar.

As they were later returning to the car, two of the group stopped for a cigarette break along the road and Schaff continued walking, Granville Police Chief Ernie Bassett said.

It appears they were over the Vermont line when they stopped.

“There’s a dip in the road and they lost sight of him. When they got to the car he was not there and they couldn’t find him,” Bassett said.

Cellphone data had placed his phone in the area of Bullfrog Hollow Road just east of the New York state line off Route 149 in Pawlet, Vt., which resulted in the search being concentrated there. But Bassett said subsequent information led to the expansion of the search north of the village of Granville.

Bassett and Vermont State Police Capt. Don Patch said it was unclear why the men parked in Vermont and walked to the Granville bar.

Search for missing man in Granville area resumes; Cell phone found
January 21, 2013

Vermont State Police said Tuesday they have located the cell phone that belongs to missing Vermont resident Jonathan Schaff. The phone was found in an abandoned vehicle in the parking lot of Loomis Trucking on Route 149 in West Pawlet, Vt.

Police, firefighters and volunteer search teams on Tuesday undertook a third day of searching for the 23-year-old Fair Haven, Vt., resident Schaff but reported no developments other than the cellphone discovery.

For some back ground on this area ... I know it well, I actually grew up not too far away.

The interesting part is back in the day, the drinking laws between NY state and VT used to fluctuate. When it was 21 in VT, it was 18 in NY and then it later changed to be just the opposite. Needless to say the roads that are referenced in this missing person story used to be full of carnage and many DWI's when I was growing up. Granville was known for some of its drinking man's bars and not being all too kind to outsider teens crossing the border to imbibe. My parents used to tell me that if you go to the following bars ... and listed them, and get into a fight and arrested ... we are not bailing you out for a couple of days. Smile

As for this case ... one has to be concerned about the weather temperature and the fact that the Meadowee River is very near by and he might have fallen in there.

The entire story doesn't seem right, but there are a couple things that stick out to me.  1st the stopping on the walk to have a cigarette.  It would be more natural to pause and light up then continue walking.  2nd the cell phone, first it's at this Loomis, then a bit further way, then back at Loomis in an abandoned car.  Did the couple he met later find it in their car and dump it back at Loomis?  Surely they are being investigated.

How far from Loomis is the expansion area?

I do think its fishy that they literally stopped to have a cigarette, so much so that they lost sight of him. Also changing info with the phone...

I wonder if they walked from one state to the other because cops like to stop people coming from the bar that have an out of state plate. So they just park out of state and then walk to/from the bar.
