Search Continues For Missing Arcadia Firefighter Near Fillmore

http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2014/06/17/search-continues-for-missing-firefighter-in-fillmore/

Quote
Michael Herdman, 36, and fellow firefighter/paramedic Taylor Byars hiked to Tar Creek Trail and set up camp along the Sespe Creek on Friday evening when Herdman’s dog ran away.

Herdman, who was barefoot and wearing shorts and a T-shirt, along with Byars, ran after the dog.

A short time later, the two men became separated, authorities said.

Byars made his way back to the campsite, but Herdman, a seven-year firefighter veteran, and his dog, Duke, never returned.

Byars searched for Herdman for nearly two days before he made his way out of the wilderness and reported his friend missing Sunday evening.

Deputies said it took a long time for Byars to report what happened because the camp was so far out.

Investigators said there are no signs of foul play.

Authorities still searching for firefighter who disappeared while hiking near Fillmore

Search dogs have also been added, now that the search is more focused in the area where Herdman’s backpack and footprints were found, near where he and his friend were camping Friday.

No other footprints were found, and Buschow attributed that to the changing terrain in the area.

Buschow said Herdman had previous experience backpacking in back country and is an outdoor enthusiast. Herdman, of Dana Point, has been with the Arcadia Fire Department for 7½ years and has been a paramedic for about six years. The friends were prepared for a multiday trip, but Herdman was not fully equipped when he was last seen.

Byars also flew out with the search and rescue teams to look for Herdman. He has been cooperative during the ordeal and no crime is suspected, Buschow said.

Herdman has a 6-year-old daughter and was expected home on Father’s Day.

Helicopter in Search for Missing Firefighter Grounded by Private Drone Interference.

A week after an Arcadia firefighter disappeared while chasing after his runaway dog during a backpacking trip in a remote area of the Los Padres National Forest, search crews continued to scour the wilderness Friday but were being hampered by members of the public.

Civilian searchers with good intentions were arriving to aid the professional effort to find Mike Herdman, 36, but were ill prepared for the wilderness,  Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Eric Buschow said.

Searchers Find Dog of Missing California Firefighter

http://abcnews.go.com/US/search-intensifies-missing-california-firefighter/story?id=24251218

Quote
Search crews have located the dog of missing California firefighter Mike Herdman more than a week after he went missing in a national forest north of Los Angeles.

Officials said the dog, named Duke, was "exhausted" but in good shape. Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said there was no sign of Herdman and that the search would scale down starting tonight.

Herdman, 34, was on a camping trip with a friend, Taylor Byars, when he vanished chasing after his dog into the wilderness on June 13, according to Byars.

In a rush to find his dog, Herdman left behind his supplies and his shoes, Byars said. It took Byars two days to hike out of the remote terrain and contact police to start the rescue mission.

For nearly a week, search crews using drones, infrared cameras and even harmonicas have been traversing the Los Padres National Forest in search of Herdman.

However after finding Duke, Dean said that only a skeleton crew would continue to search for Herdman after a week of covering the terrain.

Missing Firefighter Body Found 1,200 Feet Above Creek Where He Was Last Seen
Posted 4:00 PM, June 27, 2014, by Melissa Pamer, Updated at 04:54pm, June 27, 2014

The body of an Arcadia firefighter who has been missing for two weeks in a remote, rugged area of the Los Padres National Forest was found Friday morning less than a mile from where he was last seen, authorities said.

The discovery of Herdman’s body in a “rugged cliff area” was announced at a Ventura County Sheriff’s Office news conference about 4 p.m. Friday at Camarillo Airport.

They was no indication of foul play and it was not known if Herdman had fallen, Sheriff Geoff Dean said.

Herdman was found partially covered by brush below a cliff in a location 1,200 feet above and three-quarters of a mile away from the spot on Sespe Creek where he was last seen, Dean said.

“It was obviously a long hike up very, very difficult terrain,” Dean said.

Searchers had ruled out looking in that area on foot because it seemed unlikely Herdman would have ventured that far up in elevation, Dean said.

“What are the chances that someone at night in bare feet and shorts would scale a 1,200-foot mountain?” Dean said. “The likelihood just wasn’t that high, so the search was focused in areas that there was a higher likelihood that he might be located.”

The body was spotted during a helicopter flyover Friday morning and was transported out after a challenging retrieval effort and identified via dental records by a county medical examiner, Dean said. The area had been searched aerially before.

“Nobody but Mike is ever going to know … why he would take off in the dark into this terrain,” Dean said.

Herdman’s family was notified after the body was identified, Dean said.

The cause of his death was undetermined; the medical examiner planned to do an autopsy, said Dean, who would not comment specifically on the condition of Herdman’s body.

Arcadia firefighter likely died in fall from cliff, coroner says
July 1, 2014, 10:40 AM

Mike Herdman, an off-duty Arcadia firefighter whose body was found in Los Padres National Forest after a nearly two-week search, died after falling from a cliff, the Ventura County medical examiner’s office said Tuesday..

Herdman’s official cause of death was listed as blunt-force injuries caused by an accident. The body of the 36-year-old husband and father was found Friday morning at the foot of a cliff less than a mile from the campsite where he had disappeared from June 13.

Though the listed date of death was when his body was discovered, it appeared Herdman had been dead for at least a few days and his injuries were consistent with a significant fall, said Chief Deputy Medical Examiner Armando Chavez.
