Couple arrested after 3-year-old found dead in California
AP 2 hours ago
Sara Krueger and Scott Warner were detained for questioning in the death of Krueger's 3-year-old daughter, whose body was discovered on Saturday.
NAPA, Calif. — A Northern California woman and her boyfriend were arrested Sunday on suspicion of murder in her 3-year-old daughter's death after someone recognized the wanted couple at a restaurant and tipped off authorities.
Sara Krueger, 23, and Scott Warner, 26, became subjects of an intense search in the San Francisco Bay Area after officers conducting a welfare check at Krueger's Napa apartment found the child's body in her bed on Saturday, Lt. Debbie Peecook said.
A few hours earlier, witnesses had seen Krueger and Warner leaving the apartment with luggage, police said.
Someone who spotted the couple at a restaurant near a Bay Area Rapid Transit station Sunday in the city of El Cerrito alerted police, and BART officers detained them, Peecook said.
They were questioned and booked on suspicion of murder with special circumstances and assault on a child resulting in death. Peecook said she didn't know whether they have retained an attorney.
The child, whose name was not released, showed signs of having been sexually assaulted and blunt force trauma, investigators said.
Her biological father, who is serving time at San Quentin State Prison, was notified of her death.

Again, assuming that the boyfriend did this as in so many cases, the mom cared more about having a man in her bed than protecting her own little child. We see it time after time.

Three year old Kayleigh's body was stored in a suitcase and in a freezer!! There were signs she had been sexually assaulted and had signs of blunt force trauma. The police had been called to the apartment numerous times before in the past year. How did this child end up dead? Was she really safe? Apparently not!

Calif. woman, boyfriend stored 3-year-old in freezer, cops say
February 4, 21014
SAN FRANCISCO – Authorities in Northern California said Tuesday that a woman and her boyfriend charged with killing her 3-year-old daughter stored the girl's body in a suitcase and inside a freezer.
Sara Krueger and her boyfriend, Ryan Scott Warner both of Napa, put little Kayleigh Slusher's body in a suitcase and then placed her body in a freezer, Napa police Capt. Jeff Troendly sai
d.
"Investigators learned through interviews with the suspects that the girl's body was kept in a suitcase at one point and then a freezer," Troendly said. "We believe that they are responsible for the death of Kayleigh Slusher."
Krueger, 23 and Warner, 26, were charged with murder and assault on a child resulting in death, Napa County District Attorney Gary Lieberstein announced Tuesday.
Neither Krueger nor Warner entered a plea as a judge appointed them lawyers during their initial appearance in court Tuesday. T
he couple is accused of killing Kayleigh on Jan. 30, the day after Napa police officers visited their apartment to check on the girl, according to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday.
Krueger and Warner are each being held in jail without bail. They are due back in court on Feb. 25.
Each could spend up to 25 years to life in prison, if convicted.
Police found Kayleigh's lifeless body in her bed while conducting a welfare check at Krueger's apartment in Napa on Saturday.
Witnesses had seen Krueger and Warner leaving the apartment with luggage a few hours earlier, Napa Police Lt. Debbie Peecook said.
On Sunday, the couple was arrested at the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit station in El Cerrito after they were spotted at a nearby restaurant, Peecook said.
The girl showed signs of having been sexually assaulted and blunt-force trauma, police said. Krueger and Warner were not charged with sexual assault, Troendly said.
Police have visited the couple's apartment numerous times in the past year in response to calls from neighbors, but no arrests had been made, he said.
Officers last visited the apartment on Jan. 29 to conduct a welfare check on the girl, Troendly said. Everything appeared to be all right as police conducted a field sobriety test on the couple and interviewed the girl, he added.
"There was no indication that any would be in danger in that household," Troendly said. "When you hear a case like this, it's shocking and disheartening.

It doesn't appear any of the calls previously were in regard to disturbances, but none about Kayleigh. I wonder how many disturbances, domestic or otherwise, are okay in a home where a three year old lives? There was someone who called concerned about Kayleigh's welfare, about whether she was being fed etc. Someone suspected there was trouble for sweet little Kayleigh.

Slain Napa girl kept in suitcase, freezer, police say
February 4, 2014
A Napa mother and her boyfriend, who are accused of beating the woman's 3-year-old daughter to death, admitted to police that they hid the child's body in a suitcase inside a freezer for three days, according to court documents released Tuesday.
Sara Krueger, 23, and Ryan Scott Warner, 26, were charged Tuesday with murder in connection with the death of Kayleigh Slusher. Clad in blue jail clothes at an afternoon court appearance, their hands shackled at their waists, they spoke only to confirm their names and to say they couldn't afford a private attorney.
Neither entered a plea. Judge Michael Williams appointed lawyers to represent them and ordered them to return to court Feb. 25. They are being held without bail.
Kayleigh's body was found in her bed Saturday by Napa officers who had been summoned to Krueger's second-floor unit at 2060 Wilkins Ave. to do a welfare check, authorities said. The criminal complaint accuses the couple of killing Kayleigh on Thursday, the day after police had visited the apartment to check on the girl.
Kayleigh had suffered blunt-force trauma and appeared to have been sexually assaulted, said Napa police Lt. Debbie Peecook. The couple were charged with murder and assault on a child resulting in death. Neither faces allegations of sexual assault, though such charges could be added later.
The couple, who didn't own a car, were spotted leaving the apartment Saturday morning with luggage and were detained the next day by BART police at the El Cerrito del Norte Station. The court documents released Tuesday allege that the couple, after being transferred to the custody of Napa police, confessed to hiding Kayleigh's body.
Police officers had been called several times to the couple's apartment to investigate disturbances, police said. But there had been no calls about Kayleigh, whose father is in prison, to the Napa County agency in charge of protecting children from abuse.
Napa police Capt. Jeff Troendly said Tuesday that officers had been called to the apartment Jan. 27 to investigate a domestic disturbance. The officers confirmed two people had been fighting but made no arrests, he said.
Last Wednesday, Troendly said, someone called and asked police to return to the apartment to check on whether Krueger was using drugs, allowing various people to stay in the unit, and failing to feed her daughter. Officers again did not make any arrests, he said, but confirmed the child was alive and well.

Correction in my post: There were calls about disturbances, but none about Kayleigh until last Wednesday.

Napa woman, boyfriend plead not guilty to murdering toddler
February 25, 2014
A Napa woman and her boyfriend charged with murdering her 3-year-old daughter and allegedly placing her body in a freezer each entered pleas of not guilty Tuesday morning.
Sara Lynn Krueger, 23, and Ryan Scott Warner, 26, appeared with their attorneys before Napa Superior Court Judge Mark Boessenecker, Napa County District Attorney Gary Lieberstein said.
Each waived their right to a speedy trial, agreeing to continue the case to April 2 to set a preliminary hearing.
Both Krueger and Warner remain in custody without bail.
Lieberstein said the Napa County sheriff-coroner has issued a cause of death in the case "basically corroborating" early suspicion that the toddler died from "multiple blunt impact injuries to the head, torso and extremities due to fatal child abuse and neglect.
"We will continue to evaluate evidence and review reports as they come in," Lieberstein said. "And if there is a basis for amending or adding charges down the road we'll deal with it at such time.”
Krueger and Warner have been charged with murder and “assault on a child causing death” in the alleged killing of Krueger's daughter, Kayleigh Slusher.

Not guilty pleas entered in Kayleigh Slusher murder case
AUTHORITIES CITE ‘FATAL CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT’
February 25, 2014
The mother and the boyfriend accused of murdering 3-year-old Kayleigh Slusher pleaded not guilty Tuesday morning, while the district attorney released more information about the child’s death.
Sara Krueger, 23, and Ryan Scott Warner, 26, are accused of beating the child to death on Jan. 30.
On Tuesday, their attorneys entered the not-guilty pleas before Napa County Superior Court Judge Mark Boessenecker and a courtroom filled with relatives and media representatives from the Bay Area.
The cause of death was “multiple blunt impact injuries to head, torso and extremities due to fatal child abuse and neglect,” Napa County District Attorney Gary Lieberstein said in a phone message for reporters.
In an earlier court filing, Napa Police said the suspects stored the body for three days in a suitcase in an east Napa apartment, then placed it in a freezer. When police entered the apartment, the body had been placed on a bed.
Krueger cried in court Tuesday, while Warner sat quietly. They remain in the Napa County jail on no bail.
Both defendants waived their rights to have a preliminary hearing in 10 days. Boessenecker set the next hearing for April 2.
The murder and assault charges against Warner and Krueger carry a potential 25-year-to-life sentence upon conviction. As currently charged, this is not a death penalty case.
Police had responded to Krueger’s apartment multiple times, included twice the week the child was found dead, according to police records. A day before the discovery, police had gone to the upstairs unit at the Royal Garden Apartments complex in the 2000 block of Wilkins Avenue for a welfare check but found no problems, police said.
Krueger and Warner were arrested Feb. 2 in El Cerrito at a BART station.
