32 year old Harry Devert is missing in Mexico and has not been in touch with his family or girlfriend since January 25, 2014. On that day, Devert sent his girlfriend Sarah Ashley Schiear an ominous text via the WhatsApp messenger app that said, “Just got an hour and a half long escort out of some area it was too dangerous for me to be  … Gonna get back on the road soon. Apparently there’s another military escort waiting for me in some other town… I’m running way late because of the crazy military stuff.” As reported at Fox Latino, Devert, was traveling on a green Kawasaki motorcycle, has visited a monarch butterfly reserve in Macheors, a city in southwestern Mexico, and was planning to visit a beach in Zihuatanejo, on the Pacific coast, made famous be the final scene in the “Shawshank Redemption” was filmed. I hope they find Harry Devert safe.

American adventurer missing in Mexico

Last week, Ann Devert contacted both the American and French embassies in Mexico. Her son, born in France, has dual citizenship.

"The wheels of diplomatic work sometimes grind slowly," she lamented. "They are on top of things as much as they can be."

Schiear, 28, was less diplomatic.

"I just feeling pretty lost in terms of the help we are receiving," she said.

In a statement Saturday, a U.S. State Department spokesperson confirmed that a U.S. citizen was reported missing near Morelia, Michoacan, but declined further comment "due to privacy considerations."

"When a U.S. citizen is reported missing in Mexico, the U.S. Embassy or Consulate works with both the missing person's family and Mexican and U.S. law enforcement agencies to locate the missing individual and return him or her to safety," the statement said. "For missing person cases in Mexico, Mexican law enforcement institutions generally have jurisdiction and play the lead role in the conduct of investigations. We work closely with Mexican authorities to monitor such cases and seek progress as quickly as possible."

In Mexico, Interior Ministry officials told CNN that they have not yet confirmed that Devert is missing.

Mother of American missing in Mexico believes son is alive

Before he left, Devert’s mother said he told her he “expected to be out of cellphone range for a few days and would call me as soon as he could.”

Devert, who said her son calls the world his home, told her “not to worry, so I didn’t.”

“I believe my son is still alive. I think the second escort is our key and it is possible that this was not a military escort and someone who was disguised as a military escort,” Devert said.

The U.S. State Department said in a statement that the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City “is aware of reports that Mr. Devert has disappeared in Mexico and is concerned for his safety.”

“We are actively working with the Mexican authorities to locate Mr. Devert,” it added.

To travel from Zitacuaro to Zihuatanejo, Devert would have had to cross an embattled area in Michoacan and Guerrero states, where in the past year “self-defense” groups have formed against drug traffickers.

Devert, who wrote earlier about the planned trip on his blog “A New Yorker Travels,” said he hoped to go to Brazil for the World Cup.

American adventurer Harry Devert missing in Mexico for nearly three weeks
February 13, 2014

Ann Devert said she last heard from her son January 23. The phone connection was poor. He told her he'd be out of cell phone and Internet range a few days.

She said he called every January 29, his late father's birthday, "and when he didn't, I felt a misgiving but I thought maybe it would take a couple of days," she said. "He didn't call."

Then, Ann Devert heard from a friend who recently returned from Michoacan, where vigilante self-defense groups in numerous communities have engaged in deadly confrontations with the Knights Templar drug cartel.

Devert has friends in the Valley who say they’re afraid drug cartels could be to blame.

“Somebody's got him detained and he can't get to a phone, he can't get to the internet so...we're hoping that's the case. And we're hoping that whoever has him lets him go,” said Ed Forister.

After vigilantes threatened to descend on a key cartel area last month, the Mexican government sent in thousands of troops and police to try to keep the peace. The government has even joined forces with the vigilantes as the Knights Templar become further entrenched in the agricultural state.

"This is an area in Michoacan that has been very dangerous," said Ann Devert, who has been in contact with The Missing Americans Project, a Website dedicated to sharing information and resources about U.S. citizens missing in other countries.

Missing man's family to Obama: While in Mexico, please help us find Harry Devert
February 17, 2014

(CNN) -- The family and friends of Harry Devert, the American adventurer who disappeared in Mexico more than three weeks ago, has started a petition to try to get the attention of President Barack Obama as he heads to that country Wednesday.
"The petition was started in an effort to bring awareness to President Obama and his administration that many American citizens, including Harry, are missing in Mexico, and in turn ask the Mexican government's cooperation to conduct any and all investigations needed to locate our citizens," Darren Del Sordo, the lawyer and spokesman for Devert's family, told CNN.
The petition is on the White House's "We the People" website.
Obama will join Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper for a one-day North American Leaders Summit in Toluca, Mexico, just 45 minutes from where Devert was last seen.
"If he can be aware of it, hopefully, there is something that can be done, something more than what has already been done," Devert's girlfriend, Sarah Ashley Schiear, told CNN.
Ann Devert, Harry's mother, also wrote a letter to the President.
"President Obama, I beseech you as a parent, please help bring Harry to safety," it reads in part. "I beseech you to ask President Pena Nieto to join you in our effort to help find Harry."

Remains could be those of American missing in Mexico
By Ray Sanchez, CNN
updated 5:19 PM EDT, Sat July 12, 2014

Six months ago, he vanished after sending his girlfriend in New York an ominous text message from a troubled region in Mexico, about being escorted from "an area too dangerous for me to be."

Mexican authorities, acting on tips, on Thursday located his green Kawasaki motorcycle in a shallow grave in the state of Guerrero, along with the badly decomposed remains of a man in two plastic bags, said Darren Del Sardo, an attorney for Devert's mother.

The identity of the body has not been confirmed, said a statement from the Guerrero office of public safety. The discovery was made nearly 300 miles southwest of where Devert was last heard from in January.

"We don't know whether it's Harry or not," Del Sardo said.

On Saturday, Devert's mother Ann was to fly to Mexico after identifying the VIN number on the motorcycle found in Mexico. A day earlier she provided a DNA sample to police in New York to match against the remains.

Mexican authorities identify body of missing New York man
July 17, 2014

(Reuters) - Mexican authorities said they had identified human remains found in two black plastic bags as a New York man who had disappeared in January while riding his motorcycle to Brazil for the World Cup, an official said on Thursday.

The badly decomposed remains that were discovered last week near the Pacific beach resort of Zihuatanejo were identified as Harry Devert by DNA tests, according to a spokesman for the Guerrero state prosecutors office.

Devert worked as a stock trader and said on his website that he had spent the last five years traveling. He had planned to ride across Mexico and Central America to reach Brazil in time for the recently concluded soccer World Cup.

He had last communicated with his girlfriend on Jan. 25 as he traveled to Zihuatanejo, saying military troops had escorted him out of a dangerous area, according to a Facebook page set up by his friends.

‘American Adventurer’ Found Dismembered in Mexico
Jul. 20, 2014 12:50pm Zach Noble

Ever since “American adventurer” Harry Devert went missing in January en route to the World Cup, a frantic search has been conducted, with friends and family rallying through the “Help Find Harry” Facebook page.

But on Thursday, Mexican authorities confirmed that Devert’s corpse had been located near a Pacific Coast beach town.

Devert’s green Kawasaki motorcycle had been found near the southern Mexican town of La Union last week, and authorities said genetic testing confirmed that a body found near the bike, chopped up in two plastic bags, was Devert’s.

Marijuana and cocaine were found along with the dismembered corpse, authorities said.

The region is a hotbed of drug cartel-related violence.

Devert, 33, had alerted loved ones to “crazy military stuff” that might delay his trip shortly before his disappearance, according to VICE.

“Just got an hour and a half long escort out of some area it was too dangerous for me to be,” he messaged his girlfriend, Sarah Schiear, VICE reported. “Apparently there’s another military escort waiting for me in some other town.”
