Somehow I just can't see the daughter of Beth Holloway Twitty doing something irresponsible.  If she's anything like her mother, and by all accounts she is, she must have been coerced in some way that night.

Cali...I hope you get us some more info on the Kalpoes. I know Nancy said they are nice and I will go with that for now.

I do however have some questions about this boat and who exactly is the DJ and who is the captain...and are they interchangeable? Because Steve Croes is either a pretty versatile guy who has a lot of talents or he is just a DJ. What difference? Don't know at this point.

Okay, I can comment on Steve a little bit.

He's a DJ, the usual story we hear about being a great person, dad etc etc. This again though, coming from his mom.  Very Happy So, ya know, not sure how accurate that is being as we hear nice things about all of them generally. Not toally confirmed but I believe he and Deepak went to school together.

I can confirm Satish's HS but not Deepak's as of yet. I would, I hate ASSUMING lol, make the assumption, that if one brother went to a school the other attended the same school.

No honor student no awards, like any of that matters but Joran's was put out there so I shall be fair.  Very Happy

To be clear, I was told this is a very nice family. And the woman I communicated with also taught both boys and said they are very nice boys.  The family is loving and involved with their kids.  This doesn't mean they are innocent...just gives a backdrop and sketch of the family.  And, also they have a 14 year old sister who is devastated.

Another report from Dan Riehl:

Joran v d Sloot: A Contrast In Character
Following up on a story by Steve Huff of The Dark Side, having reviewed certain records, including text and images, which cannot be made public as they involve minors not implicated in this case, it does seem apparent that 17 year old high school senior Joran v d Sloot walked a strange and wide line between man and boy.

Apparently, at the same time 6'4" school athelete was said to be a proficient gambler frequenting the clubs and casinos in Aruba, he was also known to have had an apparent romantic involvement with a 7th grade girl of thirteen until her parents learned of the relationship and made their daughter break off the relationship back in March.

This story was very likely pulled from Valentijn's girlfriend's blog.

I found the most revealing moment of Greta's show tonight was in her interview with Aruban attorney, Lincoln Gomez.

She asked him what the other lawyers in Aruba were saying about the case.

He replied, "At the end of the day, they say, look...it's a simple case, and what's going on is what's supposed to be.  The prosecutor is doing his job, the court system is doing what it's supposed to do, and in a few more weeks we'll know whether charges will be pressed against any of the suspects."

Perhaps that, more than anything we've seen or heard, gives a clear indication that the lack of information disclosed to the public in no way suggests that this isn't an open-and-shut slam dunk case for the prosecution.

On a side note, Gomez also said that, while there's no death penalty in Aruba, they have life imprisonment, and a maximum sentence of 20 years.

Can someone from Aruba please clarify that seemingly obvious contradictory statement?

I can only assume 'life imprisonment' doesn't really mean just that.

It's rather disturbing to think Joran could have killed her in a calculated, cold-blooded fashion, and that, at worst, he would be out of prison by the time he was 37, with the better part of his life still to live.

If he is guilty and convicted, he is also a minor and would probably get even less due to his youth.  I'm not sure if they are allowed to charge him as an adult, like in this country.  Maybe someone knows, but if charged as a minor would get far less.  Maybe someone else can confirm that or add more.

What, if any, are the laws regarding statutory rape in Aruba?

Is it actually legal for a 17 year old to have sexual relations with a 13 year old there?

IT WAS GOOD PRIMER.  GRETA HAS BEEN GOOD A GETTING THE BASICS WHILE THE OTHERS STRETCH SENSATION.  I THINK GREAT MUST HAVE HER OWN PRODUCTION CREW.  IF YOU GET LIFE I THINK YOU SERVE FOR 20 YEARS OR LESS THAN THAT IF YOU DIE FIRST.  SO IF YOU ARE OLD ENOUGH YOU GET LIFE.  JORAN IS A DIFFERENT CASE SINCE HE IS A MINOR.  CNN IS ALSO DOING SERIOUS REPORTING IN THE MANNER OF GREAT.

From dictionary.com:

4 entries found for chaperone.
chap·er·on or chap·er·one    ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (shp-rn)
n.
A person, especially an older or married woman, who accompanies a young unmarried woman in public.
An older person who attends and supervises a social gathering for young people.
A guide or companion whose purpose is to ensure propriety or restrict activity: “to see and feel the rough edges of the society... without the filter of official chaperones” (Philip Taubman).

tr.v. chaper·oned, chaper·on·ing, chaper·ones
To act as chaperon to or for. See Synonyms at accompany.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[French, from chaperon, hood, from Old French, diminutive of chape, cape, head covering. See chape.]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
chaper·onage (-rnj) n.
Word History: The chaperon at a high-school dance seems to have little relationship to what was first signified by the English word chaperon, “a hood for a hawk,” and not even that much to what the word later meant, “a woman who protects a young single woman.” The sense “hood for a hawk,” recorded in a Middle English text composed before 1400, reflects the original meaning of the Old French word chaperon, “hood, headgear.” In order to understand why our chaperon came to have the sense “protector,” we need to know that in French the verb chaperonner, meaning “to cover with a hood,” was derived from chaperon and that this verb subsequently developed the figurative sense “to protect.” Under the influence of the verb sense the French noun chaperon came to mean “escort,” a meaning that was borrowed into English, being found first in a work published in 1720. In its earlier use English chaperon referred to a person, commonly an older woman, who accompanied a young unmarried woman in public to protect her. The English verb chaperon, “to be a chaperon,” is first recorded in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, begun in 1796 as a sketch called “Elinor and Marianne” and published as a novel in 1811.
