Amber Alert issued for Dundalk girl, 11, after mother found dead
Police: Timothy Virts may have abducted daughter Caitlyn Marie

UPDATED 6:09 PM EST Mar 06, 2014

DUNDALK, Md. —An Amber Alert was issued Thursday morning for an 11-year-old girl after police said she disappeared from her Dundalk home where they found her mother dead.

Maryland State Police issued the alert at 10:46 a.m. for Caitlyn Marie Virts. Baltimore County police said Caitlyn was last seen around 7 a.m. at her Dundalk home in the 3100 block of Ardee Way.

Investigators said they were called to that same home around 9:15 a.m. after getting reports of a cardiac arrest.  When officers arrived, they said they found a dead woman in the home identified as Bobbie Jo Cortez, 36. Homicide detectives are currently investigating the death.

The investigation has not yet determined when Cortez was last seen alive, though detectives have confirmed that she was alive Wednesday.

Police believe Caitlyn was abducted by her father, Timothy Howard Virts, who police said was not supposed to have contact with his daughter. Detectives are concerned for her safety because she is not supposed to be with him.

I hope they find Caitlyn soon and safe. What is with these parents and ex's.  It seems everyday we hear about about a parent killing their child or ex's kill their ex's and take the kids. If he was to have contact with his daughter. It makes you wonder why. So sad.

It's shameful innocent children are pawns in some of these cases and bear the brunt of it, through abuse and sometimes losing their lives.  It's so evil.  Sometimes I wonder if one parent or the other has so much anger and hate they will do anything to hurt the other, even if it means using a child or children to do it.  We've seen cases where one partner or the other kills the child or children and then sometimes themselves.  Why don't they just kill themselves and leave the children out of it?

TOWSON, Maryland (Reuters) - An 11-year-old girl who was missing from a Baltimore-area home where her mother was killed has been found at a South Carolina motel with her father, who was arrested on murder and flight charges, police said on Friday.

The suspect, Timothy Virts, 38, went missing with his daughter, Caitlyn Virts, on Thursday after last being seen in Dundalk, Maryland, police said.

After a nationwide search, the pair was found some 450 miles away in Florence, South Carolina.

Caitlyn appears to be unharmed and her father was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, said Baltimore County police.

"The return of Timothy Howard Virts is pending an extradition process. Caitlyn Virts will be returned home as soon as possible," police said in a statement.

Wonderful news!  It's great Caitlyn has been found safe and it's a bonus Timothy Virts is in custody.

Amber Alert Canceled; Missing 11-Year-Old Caitlyn Virts Found
Saturday, Mar 8, 2014  |  Updated 8:57 AM EST

Investigators believe expanding the Amber Alert nationally, including digital billboards, led to Caitlyn being found.

Investigators say Cortez lived in the home with her three children -- Caitlyn, Caitlyn's twin sister and a son -- and two other adults. For the past several weeks, the victim had also allowed 38-year-old Timothy Virts to live in the home, police said.

Someone in the home noticed Caitlyn and Timothy were missing after finding the body; the Amber Alert was issued at 10:46 a.m. Thursday.
