Still no sign of Rice student who vanished during spring break trip to Florida
March 6, 2014

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Florida – There’s still no sign of a Rice University student who disappeared while on a spring break trip in Panama City Beach, Florida.
Reny Jose, 21, rented a beach-front home with some buddies. They say he went for a walk alone around 6:30 p.m. Monday and hasn’t been seen since.
"Basically, what we did is we called the investigations out, as well as other patrol and marked units, and we have searched the beach up and down and underneath some of the high-standing beach houses, as well as with the air unit," said Captain Ricky Ramie with Bay County Sheriff’s Office. "We’ve searched very thoroughly in that area for him."
Investigators say some clothes and personal items were found in a garbage can near the vacation home Jose and his friends rented.
One woman who lives next to the beach house said she hasn’t seen anything suspicious.
"I’ve seen, you know, the typical riding in the back of the trucks and hoopin’ and hollerin’ and stuff like that, but really that’s about the extent of it," said Carolyn Dismuke."Most of them come here to have fun, you know, get away, get away from school for a little while."
Jose is a senior majoring in mechanical engineering in the Martel College.
Back in Houston, Rice officials sent an emergency email to staff and students to let them know about Jose.

Dive teams join search for Rice student who vanished in Florida
March 6, 2014

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Florida – Authorities in Panama City Beach, Florida have ramped up their search for a Rice University student who vanished Monday night.
Reny Jose and about 20 friends rented a beach house in Panama City Beach to celebrate Spring Break. The friends say they last saw Jose Monday evening when he left alone to go for a walk.
They realized the next morning that he never came back and called the sheriff.
Deputies later found Jose’s clothes and cell phone in a garbage can behind the house. His wallet, with ID and credit cards, was found inside the rental home.
Deputies from the Bay County Sheriff’s Office have been searching on foot and by air since Tuesday when the 21-year-old was reported missing.
On Thursday, they added help from the Joint Agency in-Water Strike (JAWS) team. The dive team – made up of several area agencies – is searching the gulf waters near the rental home where Jose was last seen.
Jose’s parents are also in Panama Beach City to help search for any trace of their son.

Reny Jose likely drowned under the influence of LSD, say police in Panama City Beach

Rice University student missing since March 3rd.

WASHINGTON, DC: Police in Panama City Beach are now saying that missing Rice University student Reny Jose likely drowned, and may have been under the influence of LSD.

The report comes from Alabama local news source AL.com, which says that Panama City Beach has been marred by an unusually high number of fatal and near-fatal accidents during this year’s spring break activities in the Florida beach town.

The report that Jose may have been high on LSD – a synthetic, hallucinogenic drug that causes severe mental trips lasting last 8-12 hours – jives with what his friends said in the days immediately following his disappearance. There was also speculation that Jose may have gone into the ocean at that time, too, but reports indicated that most beach-goers were staying away from the water because, at this time of the year, it is still quite cold.

What’s new is that police seem to have concluded that Jose has, in fact, drowned. In their statements to police early on in the investigation, Jose’s friends said that he made strange remarks about wanting to inflict harm upon himself, but other friends and family members have negated this, saying that Jose was a smart and lively young man who was about to graduate with a 4.0 GPA, and was looking forward to finding a job.

The temperature of the water may have contributed to Jose’s death if, in fact, he really did drown. The fact that Jose got rid of his clothes and cell phone before missing also gels with the idea that he went into the water on the night of March 3. LSD, which is short for Lysergic acid diethylamide, is an illegal Schedule I controlled substance in the US; psychedelic drug usage is common during events such as spring break.

Those with any information about Jose’s potential whereabouts are encouraged to call the Bay County Sheriff’s Office at 747-4700 or Crime Stoppers at 785-TIPS.
