PORT BOLIVAR - A beer delivery driver discovered the bodies of two women early Friday behind a store near the Bolivar Ferry.

Homicide investigators believe the women were killed elsewhere and their bodies left next to a dumpster, said Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo, spokesman for the Galveston County Sheriff's Office. It was unclear how they died, he said.

A driver for Del Papa Distribution Co. said he discovered the bodies behind Fisherman's Cove Food Mart at Seventh Street and Texas 87.

The driver, who asked that his name not be published, said he arrived shortly before 7 a.m. with a special order of two cases of beer. The clerk had not arrived to open the store so he drove his car to the back of the building and parked near the dumpster.

"As I was approaching the dumpster, I saw bodies laid out," he said. "I couldn't tell if they were men or women."

He said one body was lying face down and the other on its side. Both were wearing pants.

The clerk arrived and the driver asked her to come to the dumpster.

"I knew they were bodies and I knew they were dead," he said. "I got the woman out of the store to make sure we were both seeing the same thing."

On Friday afternoon, smears of blood could still be seen next to the dumpster marking the spot where they were removed.

The market is within sight of the Bolivar Ferry at the intersection that is the gateway to Port Bolivar, the oldest settlement on the Bolivar Peninsula with a population of about 2,400.

Later on Friday, the sheriff's office identified the victims as Britney Cosby and Crystal Jackson, both 24-year-old Houstonians.

Authorities released a statement asking for help in locating the department's vehicle, a silver, 2006 Kia Sorento SUV with gray trim. The vehicle, which had been stolen, should have unknown paper tags, the statement said.

It asked that anyone who saw the vehicle call law enforcement. Anyone with information about the victims was asked to call the sheriff's office at 866-248-8477.

Two women found dead in Galveston County
March 7, 2014

PORT BOLIVAR, TX (KTRK) -- The Galveston County Sheriff's Office is investigating after two bodies were found in Port Bolivar Friday morning.
Deputies were called out to the 700 block of State Highway 87 at around 7:45am after a beer salesman found the bodies of two African-American women near a dumpster.

"He went outside the building to throw away the boxes. When he did he found the bodies, he thought they were mannequins at first," said Brett Brannen, another beer sales.

Detectives believe the two victims were killed somewhere else and their bodies left where they were discovered.

The victims have been identified as Houston residents Britney Cosby and Crystal Jackson, both 24.

Detectives say neither woman appears to have been sexually assaulted. They say they were each killed in different ways, but apparently by the same person or group of people. Neither woman, they say, was tortured before being killed.

Detectives now need help in locating the victim's stolen vehicle, a silver 2006 Kia Sorento with paper tags.

Father of victim charged with tampering in Bolivar murder investigation
March 13, 2014

GALVESTON, Texas – Sheriff’s deputies have arrested the father of one of the women found dead near a convenience store in Bolivar.
Britney Cosby’s father, James Larry Cosby, is charged with 2 counts of tampering with evidence in connection with the death of his daughter and her friend, Crystal Jackson, according to the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives believe the young women, who were involved in a relationship, were killed somewhere else and dumped at the store. Deputies said Britney Cosby died from blunt force trauma and Jackson was shot to death. They were both only 24 years old.
Investigators initially went to question the 46-year-old father after a candlelight vigil held in the victims’ honor. Their suspicions grew after that.
“Anytime you have a crime like this you want to talk to the family, co-workers, friends to gain any information you can and, during that interview, pretty much it became an investigation,” Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset said. “When we went to the residence to talk to him, some of the things we saw there, it increased and went further. We got a search warrant for the residence and our crime scene investigators were there last night, and after the event at the park, we drove him down to talk to us at the Sheriff’s Office.”
Evidence suggested the women may have been killed at the Houston home before their bodies were dumped in Bolivar.
“The first crime scene we determined was where they were found by the dumpsters. This is another crime scene where blood and other evidence from the crime that occurred was at his residence,” Trochesset said. “That might be the area where they may have been murdered.”
Investigators say, at this time, the father is not cooperating and they do not have a motive.
James Cosby is currently being held in the Galveston County Jail on a total of $500,000.00 bonds.
Trochesset said he has a criminal history.
“From my understanding he got out of prison in October. I believe he is a registered sex offender,” Trochesset said.

The investigation is ongoing which may lead to charges being upgraded to capital murder. Deputies are still searching for the victim’s silver Kia Sorrento.

Victim's father held in slayings of 2 women
March 13, 2014

The father of one of two young women whose bodies were found last week on the Bolivar Peninsula was arrested Thursday in connection with the deaths.

James Larry Cosby, 46, of Houston, is charged with two counts of tampering with evidence in the deaths of his daughter, Britney Cosby, and Crystal Jackson, according to the Galveston County Sheriff's Office. Both women were 24.

Deputies said Cosby is in the Galveston County jail in lieu of $500,000 bail. Charges against him, deputies added, may be upgraded to capital murder as the investigation continues.

Cosby was arrested early Thursday morning after investigators interviewed him following a vigil in Houston for the slain women, said Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset.

Trochesset said statements Cosby made to investigators as well as evidence in the home where he lived with his daughter and his daughter's great-grandmother led to his arrest. He declined to elaborate about what Cosby said or what evidence was found because the case is still being investigated.

However, he acknowledged the home "appears to be a secondary crime scene."

An affidavit filed in the case in Galveston County states that Cosby saw his daughter's body on March 6 and failed to report her death to authorities. Her body, along with Jackson's, was found the next day next to a dumpster behind a store in Port Bolivar.

In the affidavit, deputy Greg Hayes says he noticed that a window shutter was missing from the house where Cosby and her father lived in Houston, and a blood-stained, green and white shutter matching others at the house was found at the scene where the bodies were dumped. An investigator found a fingerprint matching James Cosby's on paper affixed to the shutter, the affidavit states.

Cosby died from blows to the head and Jackson from a gunshot. Deputies said it appeared the women had been killed elsewhere and their bodies dumped where they were found.

Britney Cosby and her father, a longshoreman, were living with Britney's great-grandmother, Annie Cosby, in a house in the Sunnyside subdivision that has been the family's home for three generations, family members have said.

After the vigil Wednesday might, James Cosby talked about his daughter's death.

"I'm not going to be the same," he said in an interview. "I'm not going to be OK I've got a mother over there, an aunt over there crying," he said, gesturing towards some of the other mourners.

Asked what he missed most about his daughter, he said, "Her smile, her bubbliness, her spontaneity

"She was like my twin. She looked like me, she acted like me, her features were like mine, her hands were like mine. Everything about her was just like me. When she was born, my momma said, 'Boy, it looked like you had that child.' "

Other relatives gave conflicting accounts of Cosby's relationship with his daughter.

Father of one victim charged in Port Bolivar deaths
March 13, 2014

Investigators arrested Brittney's father, 46-year-old James Larry Cosby overnight.

The sheriff says that blood and other evidence were found in James Cosby's home in Houston where they went to interview him on Wednesday.

Sheriff Trochesset says that his investigators initially wanted to just talk with Cosby, but when they observed what was in his home, they obtained a warrant at 4 a.m. on Thursday.

Sheriff Trochesset also says that Cosby was released from prison in October 2013 and is a registered sex offender.

Court records show that Cosby was convicted in 1994 involving the sexual assault of a 22-year-old woman.

He is only charged with two counts of tampering with evidence but the sheriff says he will likely be charged with murder.

Currently, Cosby is being held on two bonds that total $250,000.

Sheriff Trochesset would not say why Cosby has not been charged with murder just yet.

Jackson and Cosby were found dead near a convenience store in Port Bolivar on March 7.

Sheriff Trochesset also says that the couple's 2006 Kia Sorrento remains missing.

Deputies have arrested a man in connection to the deaths of two women whose bodies were found in Port Bolivar.

Houston resident James Larry Cosby, 46, is charged with two counts of tampering with evidence related to the deaths of his daughter Britney Cosby and Crystal Jackson.

Cosby is in custody at the Galveston County Jail on a total bond amount of $500,000.

The investigation may lead to upgraded capital murder charges filed against Cosby.

Daughter's romantic relationship with girlfriend eyed as motive

March 13, 2014

Something undeniably violent happened inside the small green-and-white house in the South Acres area where relatives of Britney Cosby and law enforcement authorities found evidence of a bloodbath - notably in her father's bedroom.

Officials with a search warrant retrieved carpet, upholstery and cleaning supplies from inside the home, but one item was laid out for all to see on Thursday afternoon: A red-stained area rug folded up in the driveway.

Just hours after James Larry Cosby Jr. was arrested Thursday and charged with two counts of tampering with evidence in the deaths of his daughter and her girlfriend, Crystal Jackson, shocked family members emerged from the home to face the news media.

The mystery began early March 7 on the Bolivar Peninsula when a beer delivery driver discovered two bodies behind a convenience store. An investigation by the Galveston County Sheriff's Office led to Britney Cosby's 46-year-old father and the 1,200-square-foot Houston home they shared with her 90-year-old great-grandmother and Jackson.

The women, both 24, began dating in 2012, according to their friend, Tramecia Terrell.

Family members offered conflicting accounts of the father's relationship with his daughter.

Britney Cosby's mother, Loranda Remer, said he had difficulty accepting the two women's romantic relationship.

"He would throw it in her face," Remer said, adding that her daughter quoted Larry Cosby as saying, "Don't throw that gay (expletive) around in this house."

Reached by phone, Annie Cosby said her grandson enjoyed a good relationship with his daughter.

"I never saw them having a misunderstanding or anything like that," she said, adding that Larry Cosby had no problem with his daughter's sexual orientation.

But hours later on Thursday morning - wearing the same clothes from Wednesday's service - Larry Cosby voluntarily attended an interview with Galveston County investigators. He couldn't explain why his fingerprint was found at the Bolivar crime scene and was taken into custody, according to a criminal complaint. He remains in the Galveston County jail in lieu of $500,000 bail. The charges may be upgraded to capital murder, officials said.

Sheriff Henry Trochesset said Larry Cosby's statements to investigators as well as evidence in the home led to the arrest. The sheriff declined to elaborate on what was said or what evidence was found, but he acknowledged that the home appeared "to be a secondary crime scene."

The criminal complaint states that Cosby saw his daughter's body on March 6 and failed to report the corpse to authorities.

According to the affidavit, a window shutter was missing from the Cosby home and a blood-stained one matching others on the house was discovered where the bodies were dumped. An investigator found a fingerprint matching Larry Cosby's on paper affixed to the lone shutter.

Autopsies revealed that Jackson died from a single gunshot to the head and that Britney Cosby succumbed to blows to her head, but also had a broken neck, the affidavit said. The women also appeared to have been killed somewhere other than where their bodies were discovered.

Victim's car missing

That location is believed to be the southeast Houston residence in the 4100 block of Howcher that generations of the Cosby family have called home for nearly six decades. Larry Cosby had returned to the house late last year after a two-year prison stint for failing to comply as a sex offender. He was convicted two decades ago of the sexual assault of a 22-year-old woman.

On Thursday afternoon, community activist Quanell X accompanied Cosby family members to meet reporters. As he spoke, Britney Cosby's grandmother, Patricia Nixon, began weeping, then wilted into the shoulder of the young man who was holding her up.

Quanell denied that Larry Cosby's relationship with Britney Cosby or Jackson was troubled, but acknowledged that the father did not approve of his daughter's homosexuality.

"There was no indication whatsoever that he and his daughter had any problems with one another, any history of conflicts, any history of them fighting," he said, adding that the father enjoyed spending time near water and "was very familiar with the Galveston area."

Relatives later walked across the street and unrolled the forest green area rug, which was discolored on its lightest patches.

Officials continue to search for Britney Cosby's 2006 Kia Sorrento, which was observed on security video entering Galveston Ferry Landing at 9:18 p.m. on March 6 and exiting on the Port Bolivar side about 20 minutes later, according to the affidavit.

HOUSTON -- The stolen SUV that belonged to two women found dead near a convenience store in Bolivar was recovered in Houston Friday, the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office said.
Britney Cosby and Crystal Jackson, both 24, were found murdered on Port Bolivar on March 7.  The bodies were found next to a dumpster outside the Fisherman’s Cove store in the 700 block of State Highway 87.
Detectives believe the women, who were involved in a relationship, were killed somewhere else and dumped at the store.
The 2006 Kia Sorento was found at a vehicle storage lot at 13523 Conklin in Houston.  The vehicle was recovered at the storage lot of the DeWitt Wrecker Service by a Houston police officer who was there on an unrelated investigation and was asked by the wrecker service to check it because it had no license plates on it. When the officer checked the vehicle identification number, it was shown to be stolen.
The Sorento had been towed from Ritz Carabret, in the 10520 block of the Gulf Freeway, after management called the wrecker service for the abandoned vehicle.

Cosby’s father, James Larry Cosby, is charged with 2 counts of tampering with evidence in connection with the death of his daughter and Jackson, according to the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.

Prosecutors: DNA, cell phone records link man to killing of daughter, female lover
August 2, 2016

GALVESTON – James Larry Cosby shot his daughter in the head in the back of an SUV and clubbed to death her female lover before dumping their bodies near a dumpster behind a convenience store on the Bolivar Peninsula in 2014, a prosecutor told jurors on the first day of Cosby's capital murder trial.
A bloody fingerprint found on a decorative shutter from Cosby's house discovered near the bodies of Brittney Cosby and Crystal Jackson, both 24, link Cosby to the crime, Assistant Galveston County District Attorney Paul Love told jurors.

Also, the prosecutor said, cell phone records show that Cosby's mobile phone traveled from Houston to Port Bolivar and back to Houston on the day of the slayings.
"All the evidence leads back to one person, and that's Mr. Cosby," Love told the seven men and seven women who comprise the jury, including the two alternate jurors.

In addition to the March 6, 2014, slayings, Cosby is charged with two counts of tampering with evidence related to a corpse, prosecutors said.
Before attorneys made their statements, District Judge Patricia Grady asked Cosby how he pleaded to the charges. "Not guilty, your honor," Cosby, 48, replied forcefully as he stood next to his attorneys at the witness table in a dark suit.
"There is no direct evidence linking Mr. Cosby to the murder of Brittany and Crystal," defense attorney Greg Russell told jurors.
Russell said that the only two witnesses who identified Cosby as being on the Galveston-Bolivar ferry on the day of the killings initially were uncertain in their identification. Before the trial, the defense unsuccessfully tried to convince the judge to disallow their testimony.

In outlining the case against Cosby for the jury, Love said that prosecutors were unable to say why Cosby killed his daughter and her lover, but said, "What we will prove to you is that he did it."

Larry Cosby Convicted for Murder of Daughter and Her Girlfriend
DIANNA WRAY | AUGUST 11, 2016 | 11:09AM

More than two years after the bodies of Britney Cosby and Crystal Jackson, both 24, were found next to a Dumpster behind a Bolivar convenience store, the man accused of murdering the women and dumping their bodies on March 6, 2014, has been convicted.

On Wednesday a jury in Galveston County State District Court found James Larry Cosby guilty of capital murder in the deaths of his daughter, Britney, and her girlfriend of about two years, Crystal.

As we wrote in our January 2015 cover story, the motives for the murder have long been unclear, though family and friends told the Press and later testified in court that James Cosby (known as Larry by his family) had problems with women and did not like that his daughter was gay. However, Capt. Barry Cook, an investigator with the Galveston County Sheriff's Office has insisted throughout the investigation that it's impossible to know what triggered the fight that led to violence in March 2014: "These are the things we know. He had resentment. They had a better life. They were being treated differently at that house. He didn't agree with their lifestyle, but neither did the Jacksons. Were they killed for being gay? Who knows? He's the only one who knows and he's not talking."

On March 6, 2014 something went wrong in the Sunnyside house where Annie Lee Cosby, Larry's grandmother and Britney's great grandmother, had raised both Larry and his daughter, Britney. Larry had moved back into the house in late 2013 after being released from prison. Britney was living there with Crystal, taking care of Annie Lee.

That morning, Crystal and Britney were getting ready to take Crystal's daughter, Zaniah, then 5, on a school field trip to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. There was an altercation in the house, and then Zaniah was left alone in the car, a brand new vehicle Crystal and Britney had purchased with their combined tax returns. The child hid in the room her mother and Britney shared.

In June 2015, Larry was indicted for capital murder.

His trial lasted just over a week, and while various family members testified, Larry did not take the stand. The jury asked to review a few things, including phone records, Larry's first interview with investigators at the Sunnyside house in March 2014, and a photo of the shutter left next to the abandoned hotel behind the Bolivar convenience store. Then the jury issued a guilty verdict.

“It's been a long two and a half years working on this. The Galveston Sheriff's Department did an incredible investigation, and the FBI really helped out,” Bill Reed, the felony prosecutor for the Galveston County District Attorney's Office, says.

Over the course of the trial, the jury was presented with about 800 exhibits, and ultimately found him guilty within about three hours, Reed noted. “There's a lot of circumstantial evidence, and ultimately we were able to use what investigators had gathered to build a compelling case.”

Cook says his feelings don't matter when it comes to a case like this one. “The remaining members of the Cosby family and the Jackson family still don't have Britney and Crystal.
