Flight MH370: Pilot's last phone call
3:47 PM Sunday Mar 23, 2014

The captain of missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 received a two-minute call shortly before take-off from a mystery woman using a mobile phone number obtained under a false identity.

It was one of the last calls made to or from the mobile of Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah in the hours before his Boeing 777 left Kuala Lumpur 16 days ago.

Investigators are treating it as potentially significant because anyone buying a pay-as-you-go SIM card in Malaysia has to fill out a form giving their identity card or passport number.

Introduced as an anti-terrorism measure following 9/11, this ensures that every number is registered to a traceable person.

But in this case police traced the number to a shop selling SIM cards in Kuala Lumpur.

They found that it had been bought 'very recently' by someone who gave a woman's name - but was using a false identity.

The discovery raises fears of a possible link between Captain Zaharie, 53, and terror groups whose members routinely use untraceable SIM cards. Everyone else who spoke to the pilot on his phone in the hours before the flight took off has already been interviewed.

In a separate development, The Mail on Sunday has learned that investigators are now poised to question Captain Shah's estranged wife in detail.

They have waited two weeks out of respect, but will now begin formally interviewing Faizah Khan following pressure from FBI agents assisting the inquiry.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370

1 HR ago  Update
Chinese Military Aircraft to Join Indian Ocean Hunt

By Rob Taylor

Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said 10 planes–including, for the first time, Chinese military aircraft–would resume Monday the Indian Ocean hunt for clues to the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

The two Chinese military Ilyushin IL-76 planes would search an area where a large object was identified by a Chinese satellite Saturday.

“It is a very difficult task. Today we expect the weather to deteriorate,” Mr. Truss said. “The search area is very large today, around 68,000 square kilometers. That’s a lot of water to look for a tiny object.” The area is equal to about 26,000 square miles.

Mr. Truss said satellite images provided by French authorities of possible debris were outside the zone identified as the most likely area to search for the missing jet.

“Having said that, we’ve got to check out all the options. We still don’t know for certain that the aircraft is even in this area,” he said. “We are, I guess, clutching at whatever little piece of information comes along to try and find a place where we might be able to try and concentrate the efforts.”

The French satellite images placed the objects in the southern Indian Ocean roughly 370 miles west of the area where the search is now focused, according to Malaysia’s civil-aviation authority.

Asked whether there was a timeline on when the multinational search could be abandoned, Mr. Truss said the one-month operating life of the Boeing 777-200’s so-called black box flight data recording unit would be a natural point for reassessment.

The plane, carrying 239 people, went missing on March 8 en route from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing.

Civil and military aircraft from Australia, New Zealand, the U.S., China and Japan are assisting in Monday’s search.

Malaysia’s unwillingness to release the full cargo manifest from missing Flight MH370 will hamper the search effort
This story was published:  1 hour ago March 24, 2014 11:27AM

MALAYSIA’S continuing refusal to share the cargo manifest for Flight MH370 with an Australian-led search and rescue operation will hamper the effort to find the missing aircraft, an aviation expert says.

It is part of mounting concerns about the way in which Malaysian authorities have handled the search for the missing aircraft as it enters its third week.

Strategic Aviation Solutions chairman Neil Hansford said it also suggests Malaysian authorities are not being fully transparent about what the Boeing 777-200ER, which disappeared on March 8 an hour into a journey from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, was carrying.

Could the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane have gone much faster?

Compared to the first week, the progress since March 18 has been blazing (if investigators are indeed on the right track). You can see below how quickly searchers have begun narrowing down their target area, each day following where they think ocean currents are moving debris.

9.50 am: China says Chinese plane spots object in area where satellite images indicated possible debris

An Associated Press news alert has said that a Chinese plane has spotted an object in the area where satellite images indicated possible debris from MH370. The search area was expanded after images from a French satellite, which showed possible debris nearly 850 kilometers (530 miles) north of the previous search zone.

China's state news agency says a Chinese plane crew has spotted a white, square-shaped object in an area identified by satellite imagery as containing possible debris from the missing Malaysian airliner.

Xinhua News agency says the crew aboard the IL-76 plane spotted the object in the southern Indian Ocean search area on Monday.

Chinese plane spots object in Indian Ocean as US moves black box locator in search of jet
Article by: ROB GRIFFITH , Associated Press
 Updated: March 24, 2014 - 12:00 AM

PERTH, Australia — A Chinese plane crew spotted a white, square-shaped object in an area identified by satellite imagery as containing possible debris from the missing Malaysian airliner, China's media said Monday, while the United States prepared to move a specialized device that can locate black boxes into the region.

The crew aboard an IL-76 plane sighted the object in the southern Indian Ocean search area on Monday and reported the coordinates to the Australian command center, which is coordinating the multinational search, as well as the Chinese icebreaker Snow Dragon, which is en route to the area, Xinhua News Agency reported.

No further details were immediately given. Satellite images from Australia and China had earlier identified possible debris in the area that may be linked to the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 on March 8 with 239 people aboard.

The U.S. Pacific command said it was sending a black box locator in case a debris field is located. The Towed Pinger Locator, which is pulled behind a vessel at slow speeds, has highly sensitive listening capability so that if the wreck site is located, it can hear the black box pinger down to a depth of about 20,000 feet (6,100 meters), Cmdr. Chris Budde, a U.S. Seventh Fleet operations officer, said in a statement.

"This movement is simply a prudent effort to preposition equipment and trained personnel closer to the search area so that if debris is found we will be able to respond as quickly as possible since the battery life of the black box's pinger is limited," Budde said.

05.22 China has diverted its icebreaker ship, the Xuelong, or Snow Dragon, toward the location where the debris was spotted.

05.10 Australian search authorities have said they have been advised about objects spotted by Chinese aircraft hunting for any sign of a missing Malaysian airliner and will be trying to locate them in the remote southern Indian Ocean.

Official Chinese news agency Xinhua earlier reported the crew of a IL-76 aircraft spotted two "relatively big" floating objects and several smaller white ones dispersed over several kilometres.

"AMSA advised about reported objects sighted by Chinese aircraft. Reported objects in today's search area. Attempts will be made to relocate," the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said on its Twitter feed.

New objects spotted in search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, says Tony Abbott

 41 minutes ago March 24, 2014 9:29PM

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott says two “objects” have been located by a RAAF P3 Orion in the search for Flight MH370.

Mr Abbott told Parliament the first object was grey or green and circular and the second was orange and rectangular.

HMAS Success is in the vicinity, about 2500km south-west of Perth, and hopes to be there within hours to recover the objects.

Minister of Defence and Acting Minister of Transport Hishammuddin Hussein told a media conference tonight that the new objects had not yet been identified or linked to the missing Malaysia Airlines plane.

“Two orange objects, approximately one metre in length, and one white-coloured drum were sighted by search aircraft, but remain unidentified and have not been conclusively linked to MH370,” he said.

“HMAS Success detected two radar targets within the search area but could not locate the targets on further investigation of the area.

“Earlier today a Chinese search plane reportedly sighted objects within the Australian search area. These objects are not in the vicinity of those that were identified by Australian authorities last week.

“A few minutes ago the (Malaysian) Prime Minister received a call from the Prime Minister of Australia who informed him that an Australian search aircraft had located two objects in the Australian search area – one circular and one rectangular.

Malaysian Prime Minister to speak on search for Flight 370
March 24, 2014

(CNN) -- Malaysia's Prime Minister will make a live statement on missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 at 10 p.m. (10 a.m. ET), he said Monday on Twitter.
Prime Minister Najib Razak did not give any details of the statement.
Also, two relatives of passengers aboard the missing airliner tell CNN they have been asked to attend a meeting at a Beijing hotel where Malaysian authorities have been briefing families.
The developments happened the same day as Australian officials announced they had spotted two objects in the southern Indian Ocean that could be related to the flight, which has been missing since March 8 with 239 people aboard.

14.09 Here is the full statement from Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak on investigators' conclusion that MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean and that no one on board survived:

PM NAJIB RAZAK’S PRESS STATEMENT ON MH370

This evening I was briefed by representatives from the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB). They informed me that Inmarsat, the UK company that provided the satellite data which indicated the northern and southern corridors, has been performing further calculations on the data. Using a type of analysis never before used in an investigation of this sort, they have been able to shed more light on MH370’s flight path.

Based on their new analysis, Inmarsat and the AAIB have concluded that MH370 flew along the southern corridor, and that its last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth.

This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sites. It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that, according to this new data, flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean.

We will be holding a press conference tomorrow with further details. In the meantime, we wanted to inform you of this new development at the earliest opportunity. We share this information out of a commitment to openness and respect for the families, two principles which have guided this investigation.

Malaysia Airlines have already spoken to the families of the passengers and crew to inform them of this development. For them, the past few weeks have been heartbreaking; I know this news must be harder still. I urge the media to respect their privacy, and to allow them the space they need at this difficult time.

14.27 Our correspondent Jonathan Pearlman reports from Kuala Lumpur on the confirmation that MH370 has been lost in the southern Indian Ocean:

The search for MH370 is over - and hopes for survivors crushed - after the plane was confirmed to have crashed in the south Indian Ocean.

Following a seventeen-day global hunt to locate the vanished aircraft, Najib Razak, Malaysia’s prime minister, confirmed the worst fears of the families of the 239 passengers.

Mr Najib confirmed that the plane ended its baffling eight-hour flight in the deep, remote waters of the Indian Ocean, about 1500 miles from Perth.

The cause of the crash remains a mystery.

A 26-nation search has focussed on a remote stretch of the Indian Ocean after satellites from the United States, China and France all detected floating objects believed to be debris from the plane. In recent days, numerous objects have been spotted floating in the water.

Malaysian authorities were preparing to brief families of the passengers - most of whom were Chinese – in Beijing and Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia PM says satellite data indicates missing jetliner went down in Indian Ocean
Published March 24, 2014

A new analysis of satellite data in the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 indicates that the plane went down in the southern Indian Ocean, Malaysia Prime Minister Najib Razak said Monday.

Razak said during a news conference that he was briefed by the U.K. Air Accidents Investigation Branch about data calculations conducted by British satellite company Inmarsat.

“Based on their new analysis … MH370 flew along the southern corridor, and that its last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean west of Perth,” Razak said. “This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sites. It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that, according to this new data, that flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean.”

<snipped>

"Malaysia Airlines deeply regrets that we have to assume beyond any reasonable doubt that MH370 has been lost and that none of those on board survived," the airline said in a text message to the families, according to The Telegraph.

In a statement posted on Malaysia Airlines' website, the company said it offers its "sincere thoughts, prayers and condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy."

Razak said authorities will be holding another press conference Tuesday with further details about the satellite data analysis.

<snipped>

Malaysian authorities have not ruled out any possible explanation for what happened to the jet, but have said the evidence so far suggests it was deliberately turned back across Malaysia to the Strait of Malacca, with its communications systems disabled. They are unsure what happened next.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370

13 MINS AGO Update
Australia Suspends Search for Weather
By Rob Taylor

CANBERRA, Australia–Australian authorities suspended the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 due to poor weather on Tuesday, damping hopes that objects spotted earlier by air crews would support the conclusion that the plane was lost in the southern Indian Ocean.

The 24-hour suspension followed the assessment by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, or AMSA, that continuing to search in gale winds and 4-meter sea swells was too dangerous.
