Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 Search Shifts to New Area

The hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 entered a new phase as authorities moved the search area to an area of the southern Indian Ocean.
By Daniel Stacey

SYDNEY—The hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 entered a new phase on Thursday as authorities moved the search area for the third time in as many months, focusing on an area of the southern Indian Ocean buffeted by fierce winds and storms.

Authorities concede that the decision to move to an area as much as 600 miles south from where ships and planes have been deployed since early April was based on educated guesswork, given the limited data about the final movements of Flight 370 after it went missing on March 8 with 239 people on board.

The shift comes as private contractors ready plans to take over what would be the largest undersea search mission in history, with a deadline for bids on Monday. Authorities are offering up to 60 million Australian dollars (US$56 million) for a company or research organization to carry out a search over 20,000 square miles of remote ocean using sonar equipment that may take as long as 300 days to complete.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau aims to spend around four weeks reviewing the bids before selecting a contractor to lead the rebooted search. That contractor will then have only a month to mobilize crew, equipment and ships from around the world to the new search area ahead of a restart in August.

The new search area runs from the South East Indian Ridge in the south—a narrow area of sea that has been mapped by U.S. researchers in the 1990s—through a deep abyssal plain to just west of the Broken Ridge, which is in places as shallow as 3,250 feet.

MH370 Search Area
Media Release by The Hon Warren Truss MP, Deputy Prime Minister
26 June 2014

Today Australia, Malaysia and China announced the search area in the southern Indian Ocean, which represents the highest priority for future search efforts for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

An expert satellite working group has reviewed all existing information in order to define a search zone of up to 60,000 square kilometers along the arc in the southern Indian Ocean.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the latest search area refinement had involved the efforts and expertise of specialists from around the world.

“Specialists have analysed satellite communications information—information which was never initially intended to have the capability to track an aircraft—and performed extremely complex calculations,” Mr Truss said.

“The new priority area is still focused on the seventh arc, where the aircraft last communicated with satellite. We are now shifting our attention to an area further south along the arc based on these calculations.

“The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will today release a report outlining the basis on which this search area has been defined.”

Deputy Prime Minister Truss said the search for MH370 continues with a bathymetric survey—or mapping of the ocean floor—in the search area, to be followed by a comprehensive search of the sea floor.

“The bathymetric survey has already commenced, with the Chinese survey ship Zhu Kezhen and the Australian-contracted vessel Fugro Equator conducting operations in the areas provided by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau,” Mr Truss said.

“It will take around three months to complete the bathymetric survey.

“The underwater search will aim to locate the aircraft and any evidence to assist with the Malaysian investigation of the disappearance of MH370.”

It is expected that the underwater search will begin in August and take up to 12 months to complete.

Officials: Flight 370 likely on autopilot in crash
2:15 a.m. EDT June 26, 2014

SYDNEY (AP) — The hunt for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane will shift farther south of the most recent suspected crash site in a remote stretch of Indian Ocean, Australian officials said Thursday.

They also said they were confident that the plane was flying on autopilot when it crashed.

Martin Dolan, chief commissioner of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, said "certainly for its path across the Indian Ocean, we are confident that the aircraft was operating on autopilot until it ran out of fuel."

Truss said officials have not attempted to fix a moment when the plane was put on autopilot.

MH370 - Definition of Underwater Search Areas
Summary

On 8 March 2014, flight MH370, a Boeing 777-200ER registered 9M-MRO, lost contact with Air Traffic Control during a transition of airspace between Malaysia and Vietnam. An analysis of radar data and subsequent satellite communication (SATCOM) system signalling messages placed the aircraft in the Australian search and rescue zone on an arc in the southern part of the Indian Ocean. This arc was considered to be the location where the aircraft’s fuel was exhausted.

A surface search of probable impact areas along this arc, coordinated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, was carried out from 18 March – 28 April 2014. This search effort was undertaken by an international fleet of aircraft and ships with the search areas over this time progressing generally from an initial southwest location along the arc in a north-easterly direction. The location of the search areas was guided by continuing and innovative analysis by a Joint Investigation Team of the flight and satellite-communications data. This analysis was supplemented by other information provided to ATSB during this period. This included possible underwater locator beacon and hydrophone acoustic detections.

No debris associated with 9M-MRO was identified either from the surface search, acoustic search or from the ocean floor search in the vicinity of the acoustic detections. The ocean floor search was completed on 28 May 2014.

Refinements to the analysis of both the flight and satellite data have been continuous since the loss of MH370. The analysis has been undertaken by an international team of specialists from the UK, US and Australia working both independently and collaboratively. Other information regarding the performance and operation of the aircraft has also been taken into consideration in the analysis.

Using current analyses, the team has been able to reach a consensus in identifying a priority underwater search area for the next phase of the search.

The priority area of approximately 60,000 km2 extends along the arc for 650 km in a northeast direction from Broken Ridge. The width of the priority search area is 93 km. This area was the subject of the surface search from Day 21-26.

Work is continuing with refinements in the analysis of the satellite communications data. Small frequency variations can significantly affect the derived flight path. This ongoing work may result in changes to the prioritisation and locale of search activity.

Pressure Loss Is Explored In Vanishing Of Jetliner
JUNE 26, 2014

Evidence of an unresponsive crew as the plane flew south for more than five hours includes the loss of radio communications, a long period with no maneuvering of the aircraft, a steady cruise altitude and eventual fuel exhaustion and descent, the report said. It added that this could have been caused by hypoxia, or oxygen deprivation, among the cockpit crew.

“Given these observations, the final stages of the unresponsive crew/hypoxia event type appeared to best fit the available evidence for the final period of MH370’s flight when it was heading in a generally southerly direction,” the document said.

Hypoxia occurs when a plane loses air pressure and the pilots, lacking adequate oxygen, become confused and incapable of performing even basic manual tasks, though they continue to feel confident in their own abilities.

Pilots are trained to put on oxygen masks immediately if an aircraft suffers depressurization; their masks have only an hour’s air supply, however. The plane, with 239 people aboard, made its turn south toward the Indian Ocean about an hour after it stopped responding to air traffic controllers. It is believed to have crashed somewhere in the southern Indian Ocean off the western coast of Australia. Australian officials have been coordinating the search.

Passengers’ masks have only a few minutes of oxygen, based on the theory that the pilot of a troubled plane will quickly descend to an altitude at which there is little need for a supplemental air supply.

The report added that the theory of an unresponsive crew possibly suffering from hypoxia was an operating assumption for the search and was not meant to infringe on Malaysia’s authority as the government responsible for conclusively identifying a cause for the loss of the plane.

There is no consensus among investigators, even within the Australian government, on the hypoxia or unresponsive-crew theory. Angus Houston, the retired head of the Australian military who is overseeing the country’s search, said in a telephone interview this month that he assumed that the flight had been on autopilot even if a conscious pilot had been at the controls. That is because a Boeing 777 is a very difficult plane to fly manually.

Victims in Malaysian Air crash likely died of suffocation, report says
Published June 27, 2014

The 239 passengers and crew on missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370 likely died from suffocation and coasted into the ocean on autopilot, a new report says.

Australian investigators revealed details of the 55-page report Thursday, suggesting that the Boeing 777 probably ran out of oxygen, causing all onboard to suffer from fatal hypoxia, Reuters reported.

The plane remains missing and there is no new evidence, but Australian Safety Board investigators came to the conclusion by comparing the flight with previous disasters with similar outcomes.

“Given these observations, the final stages of the unresponsive crew/hypoxia event type appeared to best fit the available evidence for the final period of MH370's flight when it was heading in a generally southerly direction,” the report said.

Investigators believe the plane was deliberately diverted thousands of miles from its scheduled route before finally diving into the Indian Ocean. The little evidence there is to go on suggests the plane crashed further south than previously thought, and was likely coasting on autopilot at the time of the crash.

"It is highly, highly likely that the aircraft was on autopilot otherwise it could not have followed the orderly path that has been identified through the satellite sightings," Australian Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss told reporters in Canberra Thursday.

DIEGO GARCIA

My Theory

1. The Malaysian pilot was on a government sanctioned mini 9/11 targeted suicide mission in the name of Allah. He was embracing a spiritual purpose when he turned MH370 around and headed west across the Malaysian Peninsula towards the Indian Ocean and ... then continued west to the Maltives Islands and ... then turned south toward the Diego Garcia military base.

2. The Malaysian pilot crashed MH370 into a strategic target on Diego Garcia or ... the plane with 237 unconscious passengers and crew was shot down over the island by the US Military when it was realized an attack was imminent. Either way the implication is that the wreckage of MH370 is not in the ocean.

3. Britain/US and Malaysia have respective underlying political reasons to distract the world's attention away from Diego Garcia as the location where MH370 came out of the skies on the morning of March 8, 2014.

4. Respective searches for MH370 in the South China Sea and the South Indian Ocean were attempts by Britain/US to divert world attention from a top secret US Military base in the Indian Ocean as well as an attempt by Malaysia to distract from a government sanctioned a mini 9/11 attempt.

5. The Malaysian pilot had planned and practised on his home flight simulator how he would render passengers/crew unconscious ... how he would reach Diego Garcia undetected ... how he would crash MH370 into a strategic target on the Island thus hindering the anti-Islamic objectives of the top secret US military base. Pre-planning would imply an adequate fuel supply to reach the Island.

6. In the early morning hours of March 8, 2014 all passenger and crew on board MH370 were asphyxiated when the Malaysian pilot reportedly ascended to and stayed at a maximum altitude for over twenty minutes as he made his westerly turn from the South China Sea. The pilot was privy to an independent oxygen supply inside his locked cockpit during that period.

7. The pilot failed to consider the possibility that residents of Kuda Huvadhoo in Dhaal Atoll in the Maldives would observed a low-flying jumbo jet flying over the Island on the morning of March 8, 2014 headed in the direction of Diego Garcia?

8. Considering the lack of any ocean evidence ... MH370 either crashed into a targeted strategical location on Diego Garcia or was defensively shot down when it entered the air space over a top secret US Military base?

The Foundation of My Theory

1. Why would the Malaysian pilot fly for over seven hours attempting to avoid detection only to crash MH370 into the Southern Indian Ocean when he could have accomplished the deed with no preparation by ditching the plane in the South China Sea somewhere on the flight path between Malaysia and Beijing?

2. British Inmersat denied the request of relatives of MH370 passengers/ crew to submit their satellite data to them for independent analysis.

3. Diego Garcia ... a top secret US military base in the middle of the Indian Ocean is leased from Britain and ... has reportedly served as a US base for launching/refuelling planes that were heading to Middle East conflicts.

4. It has also been reported that Diego Garcia served as a detention centre for the purpose of interrogating suspected Islamic terrorists prior to being transferred to Guantanamo Bay.

5. Malaysia took four hours to respond when it was informed by Vietnam air controllers that MH370 failed to enter its airspace on the scheduled path to China. In the meantime Malaysia deceived Vietnam air controllers by implying the location of plane on the flight path to Beijing was known.

6. Malaysian defence failed to intercept an unidentified/ unscheduled aircraft flying west over the Malaysian Peninsula during the early hours of March 8, 2014.

''The search will still be painstaking … We could be fortunate and find it in the first hour or the first day. But it could take another 12 months,'' he said.

Based on the map released by the bureau of the presumed flight path, MH370 appears to have changed direction three times between taking off from Kuala Lumpur and setting its final course towards the Indian Ocean where officials believe it came down.

Mr Dolan refused to say whether the new information made foul play more or less likely, insisting that was a matter for the Malaysian authorities. Australian authorities were responsible only for the search, he said.

Mr Truss said that despite the false leads in the past, he was confident they would be looking in the right place. ''We are optimistic … with the capacity and the time that's now been available to carefully scrutinise … satellite and indeed other information at our disposal, that this site is the best available and most likely place where the aircraft is resting.''

MH370 Search Area Announcement

Warren Truss: Well ladies and gentlemen, welcome. I am joined today by Martin Dolan, who is the Chief Commissioner of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. It has now been over 100 days since Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 disappeared from air traffic control radar after taking off from Kuala Lumpur.

At the request of the Malaysian Government, Australia has been leading the search of this, as the aircraft is thought to be resting in Australia's air search and rescue area. The search remains a highly complex operation and involves vast areas of ocean, and can rely on only limited data and aircraft flight information.

MH370: New evidence of cockpit tampering as investigation into missing plane continues
Posted on Jun 29 2014

Air crash investigators probing the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines MH-370 have discovered possible new evidence of tampering with the plane’s cockpit equipment.

A report released by Australian air crash investigators has revealed that the missing Boeing 373 suffered a mysterious power outage during the early stages of its flight, which experts believe could be part of an attempt to avoid radar detection. The reports says the log-on request-known as a “handshake”-appears likely to have been caused by an interruption of electrical power on board the plane.

David Gleave, an aviation safety expert from Loughborough University, said the interruption to the power supply appeared to be the result of someone in the cockpit attempting to minimise the use of the aircraft’s systems. The action, he said, was consistent with an attempt to turn the plane’s communications and other systems off in an attempt to avoid radar detection. By messing about within the cockpit you could switch off the power temporarily and switch it on again when you need the other systems to fly the aeroplane.”

The aircraft experienced another such log-on request almost six hours later, though this was its seventh and final satellite handshake and is believed to have been caused by the plane running out of fuel and electrical power before apparently crashing, somewhere in the southern Indian Ocean. He said the interruption would not have caused an entire power failure but would have involved a “conscious” attempt to remove power from selected systems on the plane. Any form of power interruption is always backed up by another system.

Form independent body to probe missing MH370, PKR MP tells Liow
JUNE 29, 2014

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 — Datuk Seri Dr Liow Tiong Lai's maiden task as Transport Minister should be to form an independent body to investigate the mystery surrounding MH370, which has been missing for almost four months now, PKR's Nurul Izzah Anwar said today.

She said the investigation panel should consist of air crash experts from around the world, pointing out that Malaysian officials have yet to come up with any plausible theory or explanation with regards to the missing Malaysia Airlines flight.

“One of the main responsibilities of the minister is to form an independent investigative body for the MH370 incident,” she said in a statement here.

<snipped>

Putrajaya and Malaysia Airlines have been heavily criticised domestically and abroad for  handling of the disaster, with critics pointing to the government's slow response and lack of coordination in the search and rescue operations.

The plane's disappearance has been touted as civil aviation's greatest mystery.

What are the implications?

MH370 report: Malaysia Airlines only attempted to contact missing plane twice over six hours
JUNE 29, 2014

MALAYSIA Airlines only twice attempted to make phone contact with its unresponsive airliner over six hours as it flew to its doom, causing vital clues to its final location to be lost and painting a woeful picture of air safety in the region.

The revelations come out of close examination of an Australian Transport Safety Bureau report into MH370’s disappearance, released on Thursday.

The report also shows that no one in the cockpit used aircraft waypoints to set course south over the Indian Ocean, ruling out suspicion that pilot Zaharie Ahmad Shah had pre-programmed the Boeing 777 to crash.

But this did not eliminate suspicion that someone used the automatic pilot to send the plane on a southerly heading.

Veteran serving Qantas pilot Richard Woodward, who flies A380s but has test-pilot experience on 777s, said if ground crew or air-traffic control had inundated MH370 with phone contact attempts it would have given a clearer picture of where the plane went down.

FIVE HOURS ‘A LONG TIME NOT TO CALL’

Satellite provider Inmarsat and investigators calculated the early Indian Ocean search areas based on automatic satellite “handshakes”, initiated by an Inmarsat ground station in Perth, but also from phone calls made from the ground to the cockpit satellite phone that went through the same ground station.

“If they’d been calling the plane, the satellite would have tried to log on and the aircraft pinger would have tried to respond,” said Captain Woodward.

“That would have given you a distance from the station and they would have got a more accurate idea where the aircraft went. The very act of the pinging would have narrowed down where to look.”

Instead, after pilots made their final contact at 1.22am, Malaysian time, on March 8, it would be another hour and 17 minutes before ground staff first tried to ring the plane’s satellite phone.

Astoundingly, despite receiving no initial response, no one tried to ring the plane again for another five hours. The next call came at 7.13am Malaysian time, after the flight was supposed to have landed.

“Five hours is a long time (not to call) if you’re trying to search for the airplane,” said Captain Woodward.

“You’d be trying every available means. I’m absolutely surprised there’s only two attempts to call on the satellite phone.

“If you’d lost contact with an airliner you’d be calling them on every frequency. You’d definitely be trying to call them on the satellite phone (as well as VHF and HF and by data link, similar to SMS).”

<snipped>

Captain Woodward does not rule out intervention from pilots or hijackers, because he believes if there was a fire aboard the pilots would have had time to put on oxygen masks and declare a mayday.

He says the pilots could have been overcome by hijackers but, given difficulties of accessing the cockpit’s secure door, it was more likely the result of aberrant behaviour by the flight crew.

“I’m leaning towards to fact a rogue pilot, probably the captain, planned all this,” he says.

MH370 deviated from its course at 1.25am, three minutes after the last voice contact with pilots. It flew south-west over Malaysia and then took a second deliberate turn south over the Indian

Early Loss of Power Clue to MH 370′s Flight into Indian Ocean
Posted on June 29, 2014

Flight path from NTSB in ATSB report

Minutes after Malaysia Flight 370 disappeared from military radar in the early morning hours of March 8, the airplane experienced a total loss of power but recovered, according to information released by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. The Boeing 777 last seen by a primary radar return at 2:22am (Malaysia time) headed north west along the Malacca Strait, was still flying in that direction when the power loss occurred.  Three minutes later the airplane sent a log-on request to the inmarsat satellite network, meaning its energy supply was back up and running.

Why the jetliner lost power is not known, but the report explains that a log-on request, indicating that the airplane has disconnected from the satellite communication network, is not common. It happens for only a few reasons;

power interruption to the satellite data unit
a loss of critical systems to the satellite data unit
software failure
a loss of the satellite link because of altitude

The team of experts from the UK, US, Boeing, inmarsat and Thales, who have been studying the scant data associated with airplane's disappearance have concluded the most likely cause was an interruption in power to the SDU.

Whatever its cause, by 2:26am, the problem had resolved itself to the extent that the airliner's in flight entertainment system requested to go back online. Passengers may appreciate movies and games, but IFE is not considered essential by any means. Still, I am told it is given a certain priority in the lengthy list of items supplied by the aircraft's electrical system.

This loss of power came at an intriguing time in the so-far incomprehensible story of the Kuala Lumpur to Beijing flight gone terribly awry, because it occurs within minutes of the plane's last known position over the water; north of Sumatra west of Thailand at its border with Malaysia. (E96.5 N6.5 on the report's graphic) At that time the plane was heading northwest.

How the plane came to do a rough 200+ degree turn and fly south is not known. Nor for that matter is it known when the plane did the turn. Based on my reading of the inmarsat pings and the computer-assisted probability formulas run by the search team and explained in the report, the window is expansive. It places the last "large" change to the aircraft's track no more specifically than happening before 3:15 am (Malaysia time) and that could mean as long as fifty minutes after the power interruption.

MH370: Electrical power outage claim not verified, says Hisham
Tuesday July 1, 2014

KUALA LUMPUR: Claims by Australian air crash investigators that a mysterious power outage was involved in the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 are mere speculations, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

He said the Malaysian Government would only rely on reports released by the Joint Agency Coordination Centre (JACC) when it involves MH370.

"Any issues, we have panel experts to verify it. The report is not from JACC .... JACC is Australia's counterpart to the Malaysian Government linked up with China.

"Anyway, I will treat any latest information the same way as I have done in the past, let it be verified by JACC. All this while, we have not stopped our search for the black box and any new information on the flight," he told reporters after a special Cabinet briefing with regard to Flight MH370 in Parliament, here, on Tuesday.

Also present was Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370: Why isn't Bay of Bengal Wreckage Being Explored?
July 2, 2014 17:45 BST

A geophysical survey company has slammed the Australian authorities for failing to investigate aircraft wreckage in the Bay of Bengal while the search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 continues.

Australian firm GeoResonance has called the Australian Transport and Safety Bureau (ATSB), "ignorant" and "slanderous" for not exploring an aircraft wreck it identified via its satellites, 190km south of the Bangladesh coastline.

While GeoResonance has never claimed the discovery is missing MH370, it argues the wreck is a lead that still "must be thoroughly followed through".

GeoResonance says on its website that it offers a unique and proven method of geophysical survey that detects electromagnetic fields from various chemical elements.

In a statement this week, the firm said: "The main reason for ignoring the location is the Australian Transport and Safety Bureau [ATSB] Chairman Martin Dolan making a statement that GeoResonance methodology cannot do what we claim.

"This is without ever having anyone contacting GeoResonance for a technical presentation. This slanderous and ignorant statement by a senior public servant is unfathomable when GeoResonance regularly produces accurate results for commercial clients around the globe."

The firm also criticised British satellite company Inmarsat, for releasing only the data that confirmed its 'seventh arc' theory instead of publishing all of the raw data to explore alternative locations.

"The families and friends of those on board MH370 are dismayed that Inmarsat admitted the raw data released was only enough to prove their original model", the GeoResonance statement said.

"Everyone was expecting all of the raw data to be released which would have allowed alternative models to be created. This could have shown up any errors that may exist in the original model which "assumes" MH370 ended up in the Southern Indian Ocean."

GeoResonance questions why Australian radar – the Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) - did not detect the Boeing 777, given the theory that it crashed into the Southern Indian Ocean.

Australian Report Postulates Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 Lost Oxygen
Updated June 26, 2014 5:06 p.m. ET

SYDNEY—Australian authorities said they believe that someone onboard  Malaysia Airlines  3786.KU -4.35%     Flight 370 switched on the autopilot system deliberately after the plane turned toward the southern Indian Ocean. They also theorized that all 239 passengers and crew had become unresponsive, possibly after being deprived of oxygen, before the plane ran out of fuel and crashed.

My pilot son-in-law SPECULATES that MAYBE the reported sudden accent to 39,000' and the reported maintaining of that almost maximum altitude for 20 minute could have had the ability to render all passengers/crew unconscious due to lack of oxygen.

My theory implies that that the pilot had his own supply of oxygen in his locked cockpit?  During this 20 minute period of time the pilot made that reported turn and ... then proceeded to make that reported 5,000' to 4,000' descent as he flew the aircraft over Malaysia towards the Indian Ocean?

Contrary to official denials ... could it be that upon reaching the Indian Ocean the pilot continued WEST ... not SOUTH ... towards the Maldives where residents reported a "low flying" airplane ... toward the runway at Diego Garcia that was reportedly programmed into his flight simulator?

If MH370 crashed into a strategic location on Diego Garcia or ... was shot down defensively ... it would provide an explanation why not one piece of wreckage has been recovered from the ocean.

More details emerge, but still no sight of Malaysia Airlines jet
updated 3:24 PM EDT, Fri April 18, 2014

(CNN) -- New information has come to light about the path taken by Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 before it disappeared from radar screens on March 8.

The plane deviated from its planned route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing by turning leftward over water while it was still inside Vietnamese airspace, a senior Malaysian aviation source told CNN's Nic Robertson.

The aircraft then climbed to 39,000 feet, just short of the Boeing 777-200ER's 41,000 feet safe operating limit, and maintained that altitude for about 20 minutes over the Malaysian Peninsula before beginning to descend, the source said.
