Relatives mark one year of Flight 370
Mar. 08, 2015 at 09:00pm
Family members of Chinese passengers from the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 protest, with one showing a poster saying“Bring the MH370 passengers home,” as they leave after a prayersession at the Yonghegong Lama temple in Beijing on March 8. A year on, there remains no evidence to indicate what caused Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 to vanish or where it ended up despite the most expensive search operation in history. AFP
BEIJING—Chinese relatives of passengers on board the missing flight MH370 gathered under a heavy police presence Sunday to mark one year since the plane disappeared.
About two thirds of those on board the Malaysia Airlines flight were Chinese, but relatives say they have faced harassment from authorities in their own country as they seek answers on the world’s biggest aviation mystery.
China’s ruling Communist Party commonly clamps down in organized gatherings or collective expressions of anger as it seeks to enforce stability.
Chinese relatives had planned to commemorate the disappearance of the Boeing 777 at a number of sites in Beijing, including the Malaysian embassy, the airport and the Lama Temple, a popular Tibetan Buddhist place of worship and tourist site.

Flight 370 report released one year after vanishing
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - The first comprehensive report into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 revealed Sunday that the battery of the locator beacon for the plane's data recorder had expired more than a year before the jet vanished on March 8, 2014.
The report came as Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the hunt for the plane would not end even if the scouring of the current search area off Australia's west coast comes up empty.
Apart from the anomaly of the expired battery, the detailed report devoted pages after pages describing the complete normality of the flight, which disappeared while heading from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, setting off aviation's biggest mystery.

Disappearance of MH 370—a year on
Media Release
WT073/2015
07 March 2015
Tomorrow marks one year since the tragic disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH 370.
“For the families and friends of the 239 passengers and crew on board the past year has been one of anguish, deep sorrow and a daily struggle to come terms with their loss. The disaster has left an unfillable hole in many lives,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said
.
“At this time, more than ever, our thoughts are with the loved ones of those on board the aircraft and, in particular, those who have called Australia home.
“Having spent time with the Australian families over the past few days, I share their sense of helplessness at not knowing what happened to the aircraft. Not knowing is compounding their loss.
“It is for this reason that the governments of Australia, Malaysia and the People's Republic of China remain committed to the search for the missing aircraft. The families deserve answers and we are doing all we can to get them.

It was found in July, and the item is undergoing lab tests now...now? Why so long? Oh, well, waiting patiently for some other good news.

Debris on Australia beach could be from Flight 370
An unopened moist towelette bearing the Malaysia Airlines logo found on a beach in Western Australia could be from Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, but officials say even if it is, it's unlikely to help them find the plane that disappeared more than year ago.
The discovery, first reported by Australia's News Nine, was made in July by a couple walking along the beach roughly 150 miles north of Perth.
The small item is currently undergoing laboratory tests in Canberra to verify whether or not it did indeed come from the ill-fated Boeing 777

— Nine News Australia (@9NewsAUS) March 9, 2015
An official with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau confirmed the towelette's discovery, but said the tests were unlikely to prove definitively any connection to Flight 370.
"It is unlikely that such a common item with no unique identifier could be conclusively linked with MH370," the spokesman told News Nine.

MH370 Operational Search Update—
11 March 2015
Key developments this week
GO Phoenix departed the search area on Friday, 6 March for Fremantle to conduct a scheduled resupply visit.
Fugro Discovery continued to conduct search operations.
Fugro Equator continued to conduct search operations.
Fugro Supporter continued to conduct search operations.
More than 30,000 square kilometres (around 50 percent) of the priority zone have now been searched
.
On 8 March, the Malaysian Government released an Interim Statement on the Safety Investigation for MH370. The report can be viewed at
http://mh370.gov.my/
.
Collection of data from the underwater search
In the search for MH370, Fugro Discovery, Fugro Equator and GO Phoenix use towfish equipped with side scan sonar, synthetic aperture sonar and multibeam echo sounders. This equipment sends out sound pulses that reflect back through the water from anything they touch. The towfish sends raw data back to the ship where its quality is checked and the data is reviewed for any anomalies. The operators are looking for high-energy responses—instances in which the sound pulses have bounced back from objects that are extremely hard, like the metal of aircraft debris.

Key developments this week
GO Phoenix departed the port of Fremantle on 13 March after conducting a scheduled resupply visit, and is en route to the search area.
The presence of ex-Tropical Cyclone Haliba in the southern Indian Ocean resulted in severe weather and sea conditions, and the vessels
Fugro Discovery, Fugro Equator, and Fugro Supporter were obliged to suspend search operations. All three vessels recommenced search operations on 17 March.
Underwater search
Around 50 percent of the priority search area has been searched
.
Assuming no significant delays with vessels, equipment or from the weather, the current underwater search area may be largely completed around May 2015.

Malaysian Air Team Hunts Missing Jet, Believing ‘Today’s the Day’
4:00 PM CDT April 8, 2015
“Most people come to work and think, ‘Maybe today’s the day,’” said Steve Duffield, the local managing director for Leidschendam, Netherlands-based Fugro. “We’re a long way ahead, because now we know where the plane isn’t.”
While investigators try to understand why a Germanwings pilot deliberately crashed his flight on March 24, the current search for Malaysian Airline System Bhd.’s Flight 370 is winding down with no answers about the fate of the 239 people on board.
Australia’s A$39 million ($30 million) contract with Fugro runs through August 2016, but Australia, Malaysia and China haven’t agreed on funding for any further searching after May. Government ministers are slated to meet to discuss the issue later this month, a spokesman for Australian Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said by e-mail.
More than 60 percent of the main search zone has been scanned without finding any sign of the Boeing Co. 777-200. The rest of the zone should be analyzed more quickly, Duffield said, allowing searchers to finish the task before the end of May, when the seas become too rough to navigate.
Fugro, which mostly surveys the seabed for oil and gas and telecommunications-cable companies, has nearly 200 people dedicated to the search, including two 30-person crews on each of its three search vessels.
Fewer than 20 people sit at desks here in Perth, carrying out more detailed analysis of the roughly 10 objects a week deemed worthy of further study. Hopes still run high among members of the team.
“We’re absolutely in the right spot -- all the analysis has been done,” Kennedy said, examining a spare sonar submersible in a quiet warehouse two minutes’ drive from the operations center. “It’s actually getting more exciting as we get closer.”
Duffield, who expects that the search will indeed continue beyond the current stage, is already fitting out his ships to handle winter weather further to the north, where seas are calmer.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 Search Area to Be Expanded
Updated April 16, 2015 12:26 p.m. ET
Malaysia, Australia and China agreed Thursday to double the size of the search area for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 if the missing plane isn’t found by the end of May.
Authorities have combed about 60% of the 60,000-square-kilometer (23,000-square-mile) search area in the southern Indian Ocean for the Boeing 777. The plane was carrying 239 passengers and crew when it became an aviation tragedy and mystery by vanishing during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014. Most of the passengers were Chinese citizens.
The area covered by the search, which is currently being led by Australia, will be expanded by another 60,000 square kilometers if the plane isn’t found by the end of next month, Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said at a news conference after a meeting of transport ministers of the three countries involved.
Authorities declared their continued confidence that the aircraft will eventually be found within the identified search area.
The next phase of the search, if necessary, could take up to a year because of adverse weather, Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Warren Truss said. Mr. Liow estimates it could cost 50 million Australian dollars (US$38.7 million). The current phase, set for completion by the end of May, will cost 120 million Australian dollars, with Australia and Malaysia providing the funding.
China may send physical assets, including ships, to help with the next phase, China’s Transport Minister Yang Chuantang said.
A search of the additional 60,000 square kilometers would mean that “all high-probability search areas would have been covered,” the three nations said in a joint statement.

MH370 Operational Search Update—
22 April 2015
Underwater search
At a meeting of Ministers from Australia, Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China held in Kuala Lumpur on 16 April 2015, it was agreed that should the aircraft not be found within the current search area, the search will be extended by an additional 60,000 square kilometres to bring the search area to 120,000 square kilometres, thereby covering the entire highest probability area identified by expert analysis.
The communiqué from the Ministerial meeting is available at:
http://www.jacc.gov.au/media/communiques/2015/april/com003.aspx
.
In the event the aircraft is found and accessible, Ministers agreed to plans for recovery activities including securing all the evidence necessary for the accident investigation.
It is anticipated that searching the additional area may take up to a year to complete, given the adverse weather conditions in the upcoming winter months. Upon completion of the additional 60,000 square kilometres, all high probability search areas will have been covered.
Weather
Sea states in the search area are anticipated to range from 1 to 4 in the coming week. Localised weather conditions in the south of the search area may impact upon Fugro Supporter’s operations, with progress expected to be slower this week.

MH370 Operational Search Update—
29 April 2015
Key developments this week
GO Phoenix arrived back in the search area on Thursday, 23 April and recommenced search operations in the northern part of the search area.
Fugro Discovery continues to conduct search operations to the west of the 7th arc with a focus on the south in order to maximise coverage in this area prior to the deterioration of weather conditions as winter approaches.
Fugro Equator continues to conduct operations to the east of the 7th arc with a focus on the south in order to ensure that this area is searched ahead of the expected deterioration in weather conditions.
Fugro Supporter continues to conduct search operations within the search area. Unfavourable weather conditions have hampered the deployment of the AUV with the vessel obliged to go on stand-by and wait for conditions to abate.
Underwater search
As noted in last week's update, at a meeting of Ministers from Australia, Malaysia and the People's Republic of China held in Kuala Lumpur on 16 April 2015, it was agreed that should the aircraft not be found within the current search area, the search will be extended by an additional 60,000 square kilometres to bring the search area to 120,000 square kilometres, thereby covering the entire highest probability area identified by expert analysis.

MH370: search for missing flight to change as winter conditions set in
Wednesday 6 May 2015 05.50 EDT
Preparations are underway to ensure the search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 continues through the southern hemisphere winter.
The weather is already affecting use of the automated underwater search vehicle, and rough seas are making it difficult to launch and recover the drone.
Australia’s Joint Agency Coordination Centre (JACC) said a decision had been made to suspend drone operations during winter but that plans had been modified so the search could continue and an expanded 120,000 square-kilometre area could be scoured.
“Safety of the search crews also remains a priority,” it said.

MH370 Operational Search Update—
06 May 2015
Key developments this week
GO Phoenix continues to conduct search operations to the east of the 7th arc. Weather conditions on Sunday resulted in a temporary suspension of search operations.
Fugro Discovery has continued to conduct search operations to the west of the 7th arc and will depart the search area around 7 May to return to Fremantle for resupply.
Fugro Equator continues to conduct search operations to the east of the 7th arc with a focus on the south in order to ensure that this area is searched ahead of the expected deterioration in weather conditions.
Fugro Supporter continues to conduct search operations within the search area. However, unfavourable weather conditions have hampered the deployment of the AUV during this period.
Underwater search
The search plan has been modified to enable continuous search operations during winter and to ensure that the entire 120,000 square kilometre area is searched as effectively as possible. Safety of the search crews also remains a priority. Searching in the expanded area will commence as soon as possible and will focus search efforts in the south, to take advantage of the last of the better weather in that area.
Over 75% of the seafloor in the existing search area has been searched so far
.
The onset of winter weather is already affecting AUV operations, with rough sea conditions making it difficult to launch and recover the AUV. The decision has been made to suspend AUV operations in the search area during the winter months. As a result, Fugro Supporter will withdraw from the search on completion of her present swing.
