MH370 Hunters Narrow Down Most Likely Site of Wreckage
December 2, 2015 — 5:20 PM CST
Updated on December 3, 2015 — 12:32 AM CST
Australian authorities hunting for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 said they’ve narrowed down the search area for the missing plane as they seek to solve one of the biggest mysteries in modern aviation history.
New analysis of the aircraft’s flight path and satellite communications has generated a “hotspot” where the wreckage is most likely to lie, Australian Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said Thursday in Canberra. Investigators are now focusing on the southern end of a refined 100,000-square-kilometer (39,000-square-mile) search area, Truss said.

Search area for MH370 verified
With over 62% of the 120,000 square kilometre search zone for missing Malaysian flight MH 370 now complete in the Indian Ocean, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss today provided details of the focus in the remaining search area.
“The Search Strategy Working Group, coordinated by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has conducted ongoing examination of available data since the disappearance of flight MH370,” Mr Truss said.
“One element of that ongoing work has been to engage the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) to provide expert analysis of available data relating to MH370. That analysis has informed the ATSB's latest report, MH370—Definition of Underwater Search Area Update.

Search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 turns up shipwreck instead
12:08 p.m. EST January 13, 2016
The search for the Malaysian airliner that vanished nearly two years ago has revealed a 19th-century shipwreck on the floor of the Indian Ocean off the west Australian coast, officials said Wednesday.
Based on sonar data, the ship appears to be a steel or iron vessel, according to a review by the Shipwreck Galleries of the Western Australian Museum.
Searchers aboard the vessel Havila Harmony discovered the unusual sonar image Dec. 19 and captured a high-resolution picture Jan. 2. The shadowy image shows a largely intact ship 12,000 feet underwater with a slight bend in the middle.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is leading the search, which involves ships scanning 46,000 miles of ocean floor, equivalent to the size of Pennsylvania. They are coordinating with the Malaysian and Chinese governments. About two-thirds of the targeted area has been searched so far, with the occasional discovery of shipping containers

MH370 Operational Search Update—
13 January 2016
Key developments this week
Fugro Discovery arrived in Fremantle for a scheduled resupply visit on 11 January. The vessel departs on 13 January, and is anticipated to arrive back in the search area around 19 January.
Fugro Equator continues to conduct search operations. In early February the vessel will return to Fremantle for a scheduled resupply visit.
Havila Harmony is conducting search operations using the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). The AUV is currently surveying some of the most difficult portions of the search area that cannot be searched effectively using the deep tow sonar. The vessel will be departing the search area around 14 January, returning to Fremantle for a scheduled port visit.
On 19 December 2015, an anomalous sonar contact was identified in the course of the underwater search, with analysis suggesting the object was likely to be man-made, probably a shipwreck. Havila Harmony was tasked with further examination of the contact using the AUV. On 2 January 2016, the AUV captured high-resolution sonar imagery of the contact, confirming that it was indeed the wreck of a ship.
The Shipwreck Galleries of the Western Australian Museum has conducted a preliminary review of some sonar imagery and advised that the vessel is likely to be a steel/iron vessel dating from the turn of the 19th Century.
Underwater search operations
Weather may continue to impact on search operations but more favourable conditions are currently being experienced.
Consistent with the undertaking given by the Governments of Australia, Malaysia and the People's Republic of China in April last year, 120,000 square kilometres will be thoroughly searched. It is anticipated this will be completed around the middle of the year. In
the absence of credible new information that leads to the identification of a specific location of the aircraft, Governments have agreed that there will be no further expansion of the search area.

BANGKOK – A large chunk of metal that could be from an aircraft washed ashore in southern Thailand, but Malaysian authorities on Sunday cautioned against speculation of a link to a Malaysia Airlines flight missing almost two years.
Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said he instructed Malaysian civil aviation officials to contact Thailand about the newly found wreckage, a curved piece of metal measuring about 2 meters by 3 meters (6 ½ feet by 10 feet) with electrical wires hanging from it
and numbers stamped on it in several places.
"I urge the media and the public not to speculate because it will give undue pressure to the loved ones of the victims of MH370," he said.
Thailand's Transportation Ministry said four Malaysian officials and two Thai experts will visit the site Monday.

Update on MH370
25 January 2016
Yesterday, while conducting search activities in the southern Indian Ocean, Fugro Discovery lost the sonar vehicle deep tow (towfish) being used to search the ocean floor
.
The towfish collided with a mud volcano which rises 2,200 metres from the seafloor resulting in the vehicle's tow cable breaking. The towfish and 4,500 metres of cable became separated from the vessel and are now resting on the sea floor.
There were no injuries to crew and it is believed it will be possible to recover the towfish at a later date.
Fugro Discovery has commenced its return to Fremantle where a replacement cable will be installed on the vessel. During the journey, the spare towfish on board Fugro Discovery will be readied for future search activities.

Malaysia: Metal debris found in Thailand not part of MH370
9:38 a.m. EST January 26, 2016
The Malaysian government confirmed Tuesday that debris found last week in Thailand isn't part of missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which disappeared nearly two years ago with 239 people aboard.
Thai experts examined the debris and ascertained that the numbers engraved on the body, the wire bundle and the bolts do not match those of a Boeing 777, Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said in a statement.
Japanese rocket maker Mitsubishi Heavy Industries said Monday that it's "highly likely" the metal piece is part of a Japanese H-IIA or H-IIB rocket that was launched from southern Japan.
Flight 370 took off from Kuala Lumpur on March 8, 2014, headed to Beijing, but disappeared after turning back toward Malaysia.

Havila Harmony
During the last week of AUV operations before returning to port for resupply, the crew on board Havila Harmony had detected irregularities with the HiPaP communications system
. The system was recalibrated and damage to the HiPaP pole was suspected to be the cause. The HiPaP pole is a piece of underwater communications equipment that is lowered through the ship's hull and carries an acoustic transceiver used to position and control the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV).
Upon arrival at Henderson, divers confirmed that the pole was bent and fouled with fishing net. The vessel was subsequently dry-docked at the BAE Systems ship lift facility to allow the pole to be replaced.
The vessel is expected to depart Fremantle for the search area on 28 January and recommence search activities around 2 February 2016.

Chinese ship with advanced sonar to search for Flight 370
Posted January 29
By ROD McGUIRK, Associated Press
CANBERRA, Australia — A Chinese ship equipped with advanced sonar equipment will soon join the search for the Malaysian airliner believed to have crashed in the southern Indian Ocean almost two years ago, an official said on Friday.
The Dong Hai Jiu 101 will leave Singapore on Sunday to join the hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 over a 120,000-square- kilometer (46,000-square-mile) expanse of deep seabed by late February, Australian Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said.
The ship brings the state-of-the-art Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS), which some experts say is more accurate than standard 75 kHz side-scan sonar devises that have been used to scan most of the area searched so far.

MH370 Operational Search Update—
10 February 2016
Key developments this week
Fugro Discovery arrived back in the search area on 6 February, but adverse weather conditions prevented the safe deployment of the towfish until 9 February. During calibration of the towfish, damage to the cable was noticed and while both the cable and towfish were secured, the vessel will need to return to Fremantle to obtain a replacement cable. The vessel departed the search area this morning and is anticipated to arrive in port around 15 February.
Fugro Equator arrived at Fremantle yesterday for a scheduled port visit, and is scheduled to depart today.
Havila Harmony arrived back in the search area on 3 February and successfully recovered the towfish Intrepid that was separated from Fugro Discovery. Subsequently, adverse weather prevented Havila Harmony from undertaking search operations however improved conditions have now allowed these to resume. Havila Harmony rendezvoused with Fugro Discovery this morning and transferred the towfish Intrepid to the vessel before Fugro Discovery departed.
Dong Hai Jiu 101 will arrive in Fremantle today for resupply before departing to commence search operations.
Underwater search operations
Weather may continue to impact on search operations but more favourable conditions are currently being experienced.

Recovery of deep tow sonar vehicle
The Fugro vessel, Havila Harmony, successfully recovered the deep tow sonar vehicle (towfish) which was separated from Fugro Discovery on 24 January when it collided with an underwater seamount while conducting search operations.
On the evening of 3 February, the crew of the Havila Harmony deployedan FCV3000 remotely operated vehicle (ROV) via its umbilical cord to the seafloor. When the ROV reached the seafloor at a depth of around 2,550 m, the towfish was quickly located and the ROV pilots used a cutting tool fitted to the ROV to sever the soft tow connecting the depressor weight to the towfish. A manipulator on the ROV was used to raise the neutrally-buoyant towfish to 2,000 metres. It was then attached to a hook that had been lowered from the crane on board Havila Harmony, and raised to the surface for retrieval.

Havila Harmony is currently on weather standby. It is anticipated that improved weather conditions will allow the resumption of underwater search operations in the next 48 hours.
Dong Hai Jiu 101 departed Fremantle for the search area on 22 February. The vessel is expected to arrive in the search area on 25 February.
Underwater search operations
Weather may continue to impact on search operations but more favourable conditions are currently being experienced.
More than 85,000 square kilometres of the seafloor have been searched so far

Missing MH370: Possible Boeing 777 Part Found Off Mozambique, Sources Say
MAR 2 2016, 8:37 AM ET
It was found on a sandbank in the Mozambique Channel — the body of water between Mozambique in eastern Africa and Madagascar — and in the same corner of the southern Indian Ocean where the only confirmed piece of debris, a flaperon, was found last July.
Investigators in Malaysia, Australia and the U.S. have seen photographs of the latest object and sources say there is a good chance it comes from a Boeing 777.
Boeing engineers are looking at the photos, according to sources, but the company has declined to comment.
The object has the words "NO STEP" on it and could be from the plane's horizontal stabilizer — the wing-like parts attached to the tail, sources say. It was discovered by an American who has been blogging about the search for MH370.
