Myra Lewis Missing: Family Thinks 2-Year-Old Girl Was Abducted
March 5, 2014

Myra Lewis, a missing 2-year-old girl from Madison County, Miss., is at the center of a joint search effort being conducted by the FBI, Mississippi Highway Patrol, and county sheriff’s department.

An Amber Alert was sent out Sunday, one day after family members last saw Lewis at their rural Mississippi home, the Clarion Ledger reported.

— Michael Baisden (@BaisdenLive) March 3, 2014

"Until we can prove or disprove one or the other, we’ve still got to consider every possibility. She may have wandered off or been abducted, we just don’t know what (happened) at this point," Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker said Tuesday at a news conference. "The Sheriff’s Department and multiple agencies, including the FBI and Mississippi Highway Patrol, you name it, they’ve all been here for us ... We have not given up."

So far authorities have reportedly searched 4 square miles around the family home, employing search and rescue dogs, aircraft, and more than 300 people, according to Tucker.

On Tuesday, FBI agents were seen carrying brown paper bags of evidence out of the family’s home.

FBI joins search for missing Mississippi toddler Myra Lewis
March 4, 2014

CAMDEN, Mississippi -- The FBI has joined the search for a missing Madison County toddler, and authorities say they're still not sure what happened to her.

Police began looking for 2-year-old Myra Lewis on Saturday afternoon after family members realized she was missing. She may have been gone from her rural Camden home for hours by that time.

An Amber alert was issued Sunday, and family members said Monday they believed she was kidnapped. But Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker said Tuesday at a news conference that authorities aren't sure.

"Until we can prove or disprove one or the other, we've still got to consider every possibility. She may have wandered off or been abducted, we just don't know what (happened) at this point," he said.

Tucker said authorities have searched 4 square miles around the family home, using dogs, aircraft and more than 300 people.

"The Sheriff's Department and multiple agencies, including the FBI and Mississippi Highway Patrol. you name it, they've all been here for us," Tucker said. "We have not given up."

The sheriff urges people to contact authorities with tips "no matter how insignificant."

Since Lewis disappeared, temperatures overnight have dropped into the 20s, and have hovered in the 30s and low 40s during the day.

"We fully expect a positive outcome," Tucker said. "We need to get Myra home, and again we want to stress to everyone we need your help, the family needs your help and we appreciate your calls."

On Tuesday, FBI agents carried brown paper bags of evidence out of the family's home.

UPDATE: Sheriff speaks about search for Myra Lewis
Posted March 9, 2014, Updated March 10, 2014

MADISON COUNTY - CAMDEN -
Update - 3/10/14, 3:13pm: The FBI & Madison County Sheriff's Office has announced that there is a $20,000 reward available for information leading to finding Myra Lewis. Officials also stated they believe that Myra is still alive.

"We have kind of regrouped, we have come up with new leads, new strategies, and things that we're going to be looking at this week."
Madison County sheriff Randy Tucker says they're following any and all leads.

When asked if the focus of the investigation was on Myra's parents, Sheriff Tucker responded with: "I don't have any specific suspects at this time. We're still treating this as a missing child, we still need to find her."

Myra's father, Gregory Lewis tells us off camera, he and his wife, and other family members have taken polygraph tests.

We asked the sheriff about the results.

"I'm not going to get into any investigative techniques that have taken place." says Tucker

Friday, authorities took an SUV from the family's home to see if there was a connection to Myra's disappearance.

"One of the scenarios is Myra may have been run over by the truck." Tucker tells us that is under investigation.

Myra's mother, Ericka Lewis was arrested last week on an unrelated probation violation. She is charged with being a felon in possession of a concealed weapon.

Sheriff Tucker says Lewis is on probation for welfare fraud.

Lewis' family questions the timing of her arrest.

"They should have waited because that even took their mind off Myra for a moment." says Martha Samders, Ericka Lewis' mother

Sheriff Tucker says the Department of Human Services became involved after Lewis was arrested.

Family members say Lewis' other children are in their care while she remains behind bars.

"They can pressure Erica, but she'll never give in. She'll never give in because she didn't do anything." says Sanders.

FBI offers $20G reward for information on missing Mississippi toddler
March 11, 2014

UNDATED: Police started looking for 2-year-old Myra Lewis on March 1 after family members realized she was missing. (FBI)

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information regarding the whereabouts of a missing Mississippi toddler, who disappeared March 1.

Authorities began looking for 2-year-old Myra Lewis after family members realized she was missing. She may have been gone from her rural Camden home for hours by that time.

An Amber alert was issued last Sunday, and family members said Monday they believed she was kidnapped. But Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker said that authorities aren’t sure.

Tucker said Monday he is still conducting the investigation with the belief the 2-year-old is alive, the Clarion-Ledger reported.

“I don’t have any reason to suggest otherwise, and I’m an optimistic person. I sincerely believe that in my heart,” he told reporters.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Daniel McMullen said the reward money might encourage someone who knows Myra's whereabouts to come forward.

“We believe there is someone out there who has information as to where little Myra is. We certainly hope by offering this reward, we’ll receive that information,” McMullen said Monday.

Tucker told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Sunday that the arrest of the girl’s mother, 35-year-old Ericka Lewis, on Friday on a probation violation was not connected to the disappearance.

Tucker said she faced a warrant for a probation violation following a welfare fraud conviction. She also faced a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Her family questioned whether authorities made the right decision arresting Myra's mother during the middle of the investigation, the Clarion-Ledger reported.

“I look at that as it should be something that would be irrelevant considering the circumstances and what’s going on and as far as Myra, that’s like double hurt for us,” said Martha Sanders, Ericka Lewis' mother.

Tucker told the newspaper the timing is unfortunate.

“There’s never a good time to go to jail for anyone, I don’t think,” he said. “Those warrants are issued by the judge, and it’s my duty to uphold the law.”

Ten days into the search: Where is Myra Lewis?
March 11, 2014

In the 10 days since the two-year-old disappeared, reportedly from her yard in Camden, the investigation has taken several turns, but they all lead back to the same question: Where is Myra?

Throughout the case, Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker says he’s remaining optimistic, and that he thinks the case will have a “positive outcome.” At the same time Tucker says he believes the child is alive, he says he does not have reason to believe she has been kidnapped.

Saturday, Mar. 1 - Monday, Mar. 3:
The child’s family reports her missing after her mother, Ericka Lewis, saw her and one of her sisters in the yard. Ericka Lewis told police she was on her way to the store and told the two children to go inside the house, where Gregory Lewis, Ericka’s husband was looking after their one-month-old.

Officials are tight-lipped on what happened between the time Ericka Lewis claims to have seen her daughter, and when police were called about the missing child.

“I don’t want to get into too much what transpired that day. There are statements from everyone involved that are pretty accurate with one another,” Tucker said. “We’ve put together a timeline of events based on those statements. We feel pretty comfortable that Myra was last seen about the hours of 10 and 11 a.m., so that’s what we’re going on until anything changes it.”

Gregory Lewis tells reporters that he had looked for Myra on an ATV, and that he had tried to track her with the family dogs.\

Motel Employee Says She Saw Missing 2-Year-Old
March 11, 2014

(Memphis) A Discovery Inn employee says she saw missing 2-year-old Myra Lewis Monday.
The employee said she asked a little girl about the man she was with, and the girl said he was her dad.
But when the employee saw Myra Lewis’ picture on the news, she called police.
MPD says when they got there, the man was gone.
Police are now on standby to compare notes with the FBI.
A second motel worker later told WREG’s Michele Reese he also saw Myra Lewis.
The FBI expanded its search for the missing 2-year-old to the Memphis area Monday.
Family members reported Myra Lewis missing Saturday, March 1st.
She was last seen playing with her sister between 10:30 and 11 a.m. outside her Camden, Miss., home.
The FBI is offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information about her location.
“We are confident that information will be uncovered which will lead to Myra’s return, and we continue to solicit the public’s assistance in locating this little girl,” FBI Special Agent in Charge Daniel McMullen said.

When I first saw the articles about Myra being spotted at a Memphis hotel, it gave me hope she's okay.  This new update indicates it wasn't Myra after all and I'm sad to see the search is headed back to the pond near her home.  I continue to hope she will be found safe.

CAMDEN, Miss. —Police have determined that a toddler spotted in Memphis was not Myra Lewis.

Memphis police said a motel employee reported seeing Myra with a man on Tuesday at a Discovery Inn in South Memphis. Police were able to track down the man and determined that the girl was the man's daughter and was not Myra, authorities said.

Meanwhile, divers on Wednesday were again searching a pond that is across from Myra's Pilgrim Road home. Madison County dive teams searched the same pond earlier this week.

The search for Myra has been done by ground and by air. Special search units have been called in along with the FBI, without success.

Investigators Frustrated At Lack of Progress In Missing Toddler Search
March 14, 2014

Investigators thought they had a big break in the case after reports that 2 year-old Myra Lewis was spotted at a Memphis motel this week turned out to be incorrect.

The FBI is now offering a $20,000 for information that leads to information about the little girl’s whereabouts.

Meantime, officials are holding the toddler's mother in jail on unrelated charges. And her family believes the sheriff’s department is trying to pressure her to reveal what she knows about Myra’s disappearance.

"Yesterday they held her in interrogation for 8 hours," said Martha Sanders, Lewis’s mother.

Sanders read from a prepared statement accusing the sheriff’s department of violating her daughter's constitutional rights.

"She has a right to plead the 5th. Her rights are not being read to her she is being held for anything to do with her baby."

Sanders says she doesn't understand why Lewis is still in jail after her family paid $500 to bail her out on the probation violation charge.

"Now we can't get our money back and then they put a hold on her."

Authorities tell us the hold was placed on Lewis by the Mississippi department of corrections, because of the original welfare fraud charge that lead to Lewis' probation.

She just did a food stamp fraud. It’s not like she's a criminal,” Sanders said. “She’s no threat to society."

With her 2 year-old daughter missing for nearly two weeks, her family says the mom of a new born son doesn't belong in jail.

"It's time to let her out so she can take care or her kids,” And

Family friend Gloria Nason added, “A mother in jail like that and she has a child missing that's a lot on her right now.”

Lewis could be forced to remain behind bars for another 10 days before her March 24th court appearance.

In that time local, state, and federal authorities have thoroughly searched the area surrounding the family's Mount Pilgrim Road home.

Divers spent days combing through a pond across the road, but found no clues about what happened to Myra.

About a week into the search, Myra's mother Ericka Lewis was arrested.
Lewis was arrested on an unrelated charge of felon carrying a concealed weapon.
She's being held in jail for her probation violation that stems from a previous welfare fraud case.

Lewis is expected to go before a judge on March 24.

Gregory Lewis wasn't aware of Ericka Lewis's food stamp fraud convictions because he was working long hours. I understand it can take a lot these days to make ends meet and I commend folks working hard to put bread on the table, but to the extent he wasn't aware of his wife's food stamp convictions and what goes on with his family?     Ericka Lewis's family doesn't want her in jail while she's nursing a month old child, yet there is a two year old child missing from the home.  She's was on probation for a felony conviction of welfare fraud and firearms were found in the home in violation of her probation.  What I want to know is what they think about the fact there is a two year old little girl named Myra missing from the household.  Where is Myra?

Myra Lewis' mom remains in jail on probation violation
Still no word on missing toddler's whereabouts

March 23, 2014

The mother of missing toddler Myra Lewis will remain in jail after her probation revocation hearing was postponed on Monday.

Ericka Lewis, whose 2-year-old daughter has been missing since Mar. 1, was jailed on probation violations about two weeks ago when she was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Investigators had located some guns inside the family’s home. Lewis’ probation violation stemmed from an original felony food stamp fraud conviction.

Officials said Lewis’ hearing was delayed until May 19 because the sentencing judge was unable to be in court.

Myra’s father Gregory Lewis told reporters Monday that he was not aware of his wife’s food stamp fraud convictions, claiming his long hours of work are what keep him from knowing what goes on with his family.

On the day Myra disappeared, family members told police Gregory Lewis was inside the home with the infant. He was, according to their stories, in a back bedroom resting from a long night of work.

Ericka’s family said they feel like police shouldn’t have jailed her during the investigation and while she is nursing a month-old child. Her mother, Martha Sanders, said she feels like the arrest was a tactic to pressure Ericka Lewis into giving up some kind of information.

"They can pressure Erica, but she'll never give in. She'll never give in because she didn't do anything," said Sanders.

Myra’s family has been polygraphed, but police won’t comment on the outcome of those polygraph tests.

Myra Lewis case involves tips, dead ends, frustration
2-year-old reported missing 3 weeks ago from Camden home

UPDATED 4:12 PM CDT Mar 24, 2014

CAMDEN, Miss. —It's been more than three weeks since toddler Myra Lewis was reported missing from her Camden home, and authorities have not given up on finding her.

Myra was reported missing by her family on March 1, which sparked a massive search. For several days, multiple state, local and federal agencies combed the woods surrounding the girl's home and a nearby pond looking for clues.

"Unfortunately, we have not been able to locate Myra," Tucker said. "But the effort is still there. The intention is still there."

Tucker said he feels confident that Myra is not near her home, however, he admits that she could be anywhere in the country by now.

"Is there any fear that she may not be alive?" 16 WAPT's Andrew Kinsey asked.

"There's always that fear," Tucker said. "It is the fear of the unknown. We just don't know."

Since the FBI offered a $20,000 reward two weeks ago for information that could lead to Myra's whereabouts, authorities have been flooded with tips of possible sightings of the little girl. Tucker said the tips have come in from Memphis, Atlanta and even Washington state.

"All babies tend to favor (each other) when it's a situation like this, and everybody wants to help," Tucker said. "You get a lot of information that you have to decipher and sift through. We have been able to do that, but we just have not been able to find that good piece of tangible evidence."

CANTON, Miss. —Ericka Lewis remains jailed on charges unrelated to her missing daughter's case.
A warrant for Lewis' arrest was issued on March 10 after deputies said they found a gun inside her home, which they said violates Lewis' parole on an unrelated charge.

In 2013, a judge placed Lewis on five years' probation after convicting her of food stamp fraud, according to court documents. Since then, prosecutors have said Lewis failed to pay back court costs and supervision fees.

"At this point, the judge has ordered her to continue to be held without bond," said Michael Guest, the district attorney for Madison and Rankin counties. "With her being a convicted felon for food stamp fraud, that is not only a violation of her probation, it is potentially a new felony charge."

A Madison County grand jury will meet in a few weeks to determine if Lewis should face a new charge for violating her probation. Her next court date is in May.

Painting Canton pink for Myra Lewis
Posted August 23, 2014, Updated August 24, 2014

CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A Mississippi woman who knows the pain of losing a child, organized an event in Canton to help a Camden family find their missing little girl.

Volunteers dedicated part of their Saturday to paint Canton pink with ribbons in an effort to keep missing two-year-old Myra Lewis on people's minds.

Lewis went missing from her Camden home on March 1st.

Nearly six months later the community continues to support the Lewis family in the search for Myra.

"I just want my baby home. I just want my baby home...it's been a long struggle without her," said Myra's father Gregory Lewis.
Volunteers had thousands of flyers with Myra's face on them to pass out to the community.

Lewis, his wife Ericka, their children and several complete strangers filled the streets of Canton's square with fliers, pamphlets, ribbons and bows to make sure people are still on the lookout for missing two-year-old Myra.

"Like I've always said drop her off in a public place and just leave. You know her face is out there. Someone will know who she is and contact proper authorities," Lewis added.

Not a day goes by when Myra's family doesn't think about their sweet little angel and they hope that painting Canton pink with these ribbons and flyers will keep others from forgetting her too.

I can't really put myself in the Lewis' shoes, but I know what it feels like not to have your child," said Barbara, Organizer for the event for Myra.

Barbara, a north Mississippi resident, lost her son in a car wreck and organized Saturday's outreach for Myra. She met the Lewis family for the first time Friday.
