There was a shooting at Fort Hood in Texas today, federal authorities told ABC News, and FBI and ATF agents are responding to the scene.

A defense official said there is an "active shooter" on the Army post and said there have been "some casualties."

A Twitter account for the fort announced "shelter in place" has been ordered for all personnel. The post released a statement saying "injuries" have been reported, but no further details were available.

President Obama has been informed of the shooting, a White House spokesperson said.

One Death Confirmed In Fort Hood Shooting

FORT HOOD (April 2, 2014) At least one person is dead after a shooting late Wednesday afternoon on Fort Hood, a post spokesman confirmed.

Others were injured in the shooting, but the spokesman didn’t say how many.

A source told News 10 that as many as 15 wounded victims were taken to hospitals and that some were being treated at Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

The gunman is still at large and the spokesman said the incident is being treated as an active-shooter situation.

“There has been a shooting at Fort Hood and injuries are reported. Emergency crews are on the scene. No further details are known at this time,” the post said in a brief statement issued just after 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Warning sirens sounded late Wednesday afternoon at Fort Hood because of the incident.

A man who said he was a witness told News 10 that about 20 shots were fired in a post motor pool in the area of Motor Pool Road and Tank Destroyer Boulevard.

He said at least three people were hit.

He said the three victims were taken to a hospital.

The post was on lockdown as a result of the shooting, which occurred at around 4:25 p.m.

People on post were told to stay indoors.

A message that scrolled across the top of the post’s website said, “Shelter in place immediately. This is not a test.”

The 1st Calvary Division, which is based at Fort Hood, sent a Twitter alert telling people on base to close doors and stay away from windows.

Texas A&M Central Texas in Killeen canceled evening and night classes Wednesday at Fort Hood and at its Fairway building because of the situation on post.

First responders from surrounding communities were headed to the post.

Bell County sheriff’s deputies and Department Public Safety troopers were also responding, sheriff’s Lt. Donnie Adams said.

Media were being directed to the post's Visitor's Center.

Shooting Confirmed at Fort Hood Army Base
NBC News reports there may be two shooters, one down, one at-large

Multiple people have been injured and the search for the gunman is underway after a shooting at the Fort Hood Army post Wednesday afternoon.

Reports of an active shooter triggered a lockdown at Fort Hood, with local sheriff's deputies and the FBI immediately responding.
As many as eight people may be injured, and there may have been two shooters, NBC News reported. One of those is believed to be "down," while the second is believed to be at-large.

Fort Hood confirmed that a shooting occurred at the base, though the number of people injured and the severity of their injuries has not been confirmed.

Just after 5 p.m. local time, the base tweeted that all personnel were being asked to shelter in place, close doors and stay away from windows.

The shooting is believed to have taken place at the Medical Brigade Building. Local NBC affiliate KCEN-TV reported there are also reports of victims at the Battle Simulation Center.

Central Texas College' campus was evacuated due to the shooting, with all personnel and students asked to leave and all classes canceled.

Officials with the Bell County Sheriff's Office and Texas Department of Public Safety are helping to secure the perimiter of the base.

(KCEN) -- We have reports of an active shooter on Fort Hood.

There are reports of one dead and at least eight injured. Those injured patients are being transported to a nearby hospital.

We are also getting reports of victims in the Battle Simulation Center on 65th and Warehouse.

The suspect is still at large. The shooter was said to be in building 33026 which is the Medical Brigade Building.

Reports have said that he was driving a gray Toyota, described as a white male in an Army Combat Uniform, and carrying a .45 handgun.

Fort Hood has been put on lockdown.

FORT HOOD, Texas - A soldier opened fire Wednesday at Fort Hood, killing three people and wounding several others before taking his own life, law enforcement sources told CBS News.

The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon at Fort Hood, the site of a notorious 2009 mass shooting.

Law enforcement sources said four people were killed, including the gunman, who died of a self-inflicted wound. Authorities said 11 other people were wounded, some of them seriously.

Sources told CBS News the shooter had been identified as 34-year-old soldier Ivan Lopez. A source said the violence apparently stemmed from some sort of soldier dispute.

Congressman Michael McCaul just told CNN that four are dead and that 34-year-old Fort Hood soldier Ivan Lopez was the shooter.

According to NBC News from a military official, the Fort Hood shooter is 'down' and he appears to be only gunman.

Scott & White Hospital have confirmed that they are getting injured patients from this shooting. A source from Scott & White has also said that four soldiers are being treated at Scott & White hospital in Temple; three of them are in critical condition and one is in extremely critical conditions. The shooting victims at Scott & White are described to be stable to quite critical, a hospital spokesperson said in the press conference.

We are also getting reports of victims in the Battle Simulation Center on 65th and Warehouse.

The shooter was said to be, at one point, in building 33026 which is the Medical Brigade Building.

Reports have said that the shooter was driving a gray Toyota, described as a white male in an Army Combat Uniform, and carrying a .45 handgun.

Four people including a gunman are dead and 14 others are injured after a shooting late Wednesday afternoon at Fort Hood, according to several sources including U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Austin, chairman the House Homeland Security Committee.

CBS News identified the shooter as Ivan Lopez, 34.

He was reportedly in uniform at the time of the shooting.

Fort Hood has confirmed the shooting, but has issued little other information.

"Fort Hood's Directorate of Emergency Services has an initial report that a shooter is dead but this is unconfirmed," the post said in an updated statement at around 6:30 p.m.

The Associated Press earlier quoted a U.S. law enforcement official as saying the suspected gunman is believed to be dead.

Some of the wounded were taken to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center on post and others to Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

Scott & White officials said during a news conference Wednesday night that four patients were being treated at the hospital and two more were en route.

The hospital was notified at 5:05 p.m. of the shooting, officials said.

The victims, who were transported by either helicopter or ambulance, suffered gunshot wounds, some in the extremities, others in the abdomen, chest, and neck.

FORT HOOD — 8:25 p.m. update: A shooting left four dead and 14 injured at this massive Army post Wednesday afternoon, according to U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, who told reporters that it is “way too early” to know the shooter’s motive.
McCaul said the suspected shooter used a .45-caliber pistol and died at the scene, and that he was wearing an Army uniform. He said it wasn’t clear if he was an active duty soldier or an “impostor.” He said the victims are presumed to be soldiers.
“It is very tragic that this is happening in our backyard,” McCaul said.
The Associated Press reported that the gunman shot himself, citing a Justice Department report.
Four patients are at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, the highest level trauma center in the region, with conditions ranging from “stable to quite critical,” according to Dr. Glen Couchman, chief medical officer at Scott & White. He did not have details on their injuries. He indicated that two more patients are being flown in. All have gunshot wounds. Couchman said the hospital is “well-stocked” with blood and blood products.”

An American soldier with mental health issues shot dead three people and injured at least 16 on Wednesday before taking his own life at an Army base in Fort Hood, Texas, the site of another deadly rampage in 2009, U.S. military officials said.
The soldier, who was being treated for depression and anxiety, went to two buildings on the base and opened fire before he was confronted by military police, Fort Hood commanding officer Mark Milley said.

The gunman, whose motive remains unknown, then shot himself in the head with a .45-caliber pistol, he added.

"The shooter is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound," Milley told a news conference. "At this time there is no indication that this incident is related to terrorism."

The rampage is the third shooting at a military base in the United States in about six months that, along with a series of shootings in public places, such as schools and malls, has sparked a national debate over gun control regulations.

Security officials said preliminary information identified the gunman as Ivan Lopez but Milley declined to officially identify the shooter, who is married, until his family was notified.

The suspect's wife was cooperating with law enforcement officers, a Federal Bureau of Investigation official said, according to CNN.

The shooter had served for four months in Iraq in 2011, Milley said, and was also undergoing an evaluation for post traumatic stress disorder.  He arrived in Fort Hood, one of the largest U.S. Army bases, in February from another military installation.

The Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas, where some of the wounded were taken, said nine patients were in intensive care, three in critical condition and six in stable condition. Other victims were taken to Fort Hood's Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, near where the shooting took place.

Report: Man identified as Fort Hood shooter was from Puerto Rico

Update 8:15 a.m.: The man who officials say opened fire at Fort Hood on Wednesday, killing four people including himself, was from Puerto Rico, the Associated Press is reporting.
Ivan Lopez, 34, joined the U.S. territory’s National Guard in 1999 and went on a peace and security mission to Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula in the mid-2000s, Lt. Col Ruth Diaz told the AP.
He left the Puerto Rico National Guard in 2010 to join the U.S. Army, the AP said.
Meanwhile, officials at Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple are planning a press conference at 10 a.m. in which more details on the injured are expected.

Earlier: At least three people remain in critical condition Thursday morning at Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple, the Associated Press is reporting.
Six others are listed as serious, a hospital spokesman said a day after officials say a man opened fire at the Army post, killing four — including himself — and wounding 16 others.
All of the wounded were military personnel, officials have said.
At least five patients in serious condition Wednesday night were expected to be upgraded Thursday morning, Dr. Matt Davis, chief of trauma service for the Temple hospital, has said.
Eight people were treated at the Temple hospital Wednesday night, and a ninth patient with a possible facial injury was expected to be brought to the hospital from Darnall Army Medical Center overnight.
Although officials have not identified the shooter, two U.S. congressmen identified him as Ivan Lopez, 34, who had served in Iraq for four months in 2011 and had arrived at Fort Hood in February from another installation.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Lopez’s wife “broke out in tears when she heard her husband identified on the news as the shooter,” according to a neighbor.
The couple had a 2-year-old daughter, according to the newspaper, and the family moved into their apartment building “a few weeks ago.”
Few people seemed to know them, neighbors told the newspaper, which did not identify the woman or say how close to the Army post the family lived.
