Casey Kasem's Family 'Grateful' He's Been Found

First published May 15th 2014, 2:05 am

The daughter of missing radio legend Casey Kasem has received confirmation that her father has been found in Washington state, her publicist said.

"The family has grave concerns about his medical care. The Kasem family will do everything in their power to bring their father home," said a statement from Danny Deraney, the publicist.

Judge Daniel S. Murphy had ordered a court investigator Monday to find Kasem, after hearing conflicting information that he was either at a Native American reservation in Washington or was out of the country, a court spokeswoman told NBC News.

Casey Kasem is suffering from Lewy body disease, a form of dementia, according to his daughters.

Nut, there were questions last year about Casey Kasem's well being, and some of his kids said they were kept from seeing him. I don't really blame anyone checking for elder abuse, since I believe it happens more than people realize. It may be family infighting, but on the other hand, when a senior is kept isolated, it can be to have power over the, the family and the money & real estate imo.   Here's one article:

Judge orders review of Casey Kasem's prognosis by independent doctor
A Los Angeles judge declined to create an emergency conservatorship for Casey Kasem, but ordered that a doctor investigate the radio personality and voice actor's diagnosis, prognosis and state of mind as his Parkinson's disease progresses
October 16, 2013

Casey Kasem showed no signs of elder abuse during a recent search of his "nude" body and gets around-the-clock medical care with manicures and pedicures, a lawyer for wife Jean Kasem said Tuesday.

Lawyer Marshall Grossman appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom on Jean's behalf to oppose a conservatorship bid brought by Casey's adult kids from a previous marriage.

Casey's daughters Kerri, 41, and Julie, 38, filed their petition last week claiming their stepmom has blocked all access to their 81-year-old dad since July, and they're worried the isolation could have drastic consequences considering his advanced Parkinson's disease.

A judge said he didn't see any need for an emergency conservatorship Tuesday after Casey's court-appointed lawyer said he visited the radio legend and found he was receiving "adequate" daily care.

The judge set a follow-up hearing for Nov. 19 and ordered an independent doctor to investigate Casey's diagnosis, prognosis and whether he had the capacity to adequately understand paperwork he signed in 2011 giving Jean power of attorney.

Julie and her physician husband are listed as the proposed conservators in their filing. They appeared in court with Kerri but did not speak to the press.

After the hearing, Kerri approached Grossman and asked if he had children of his own.

"I just want to see my dad," she pleaded, her eyes welling with tears.

Earlier in the hearing, Grossman called the court action brought by the daughters "a sham."

"Shame on them," he said, telling the judge that the daughters contacted social welfare officials and the police with claims Casey was a "prisoner in his own home."

He said social workers and police detectives visited Casey's mansion in the last week and "required" that the entertainment icon "be undressed to see his nude body and look for any signs of corporal punishment or elder abuse."

"There was none," he said.

In a court filing, Grossman described Jean as a "devoted" wife who's giving Casey "impeccable" care complete with the regular manicures, pedicures and hair grooming he received "during better times."

Outside court, Grossman claimed Casey agreed with Jean years ago that it was "toxic" for his adult children to visit the Los Angeles mansion they share with their 23-year-old daughter Liberty.

He declined to elaborate on the history of the older daughters' banishment but said Kerri and Julie knew the reason for it "all too well."

Casey Kasem's wife served with guardianship papers
May 24, 2014

BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) — The wife of ailing radio personality Casey Kasem was served Friday with a California court order that temporarily suspends her powers to determine her husband's medical care amid concerns about his health and welfare.
The order Kitsap County sheriff's deputies said they delivered also expands daughter Kerri Kasem's authority to determine whether her father, who's now in Washington state, is receiving adequate medical care.

Kerri Kasem's spokesman Danny Deraney said she has a special Washington state court order that allows her to see her father, but there was no timetable for when that will happen.
On Tuesday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Daniel S. Murphy ordered Jean Kasem to comply with court orders allowing doctors to evaluate her husband, and also allow his daughter Kerri to see him. He also ordered Jean Kasem to surrender her husband's passport and temporarily suspended her powers to determine her husband's medical care.
In mid-May, Murphy had expressed concerns about Kasem's whereabouts and safety amid a dispute between his wife and children from another marriage.
The sheriff's office in Kitsap County, west of Seattle, tracked him down the next day.
Sheriff's Deputy Scott Wilson said officers who performed a welfare check May 13 on the 82-year-old Kasem found him staying at the home of long-time family friends. Jean Kasem says they are on a family vacation.
Kasem "appeared to be not in distress," Wilson said Friday. "He couldn't speak but he appeared to us to be cognizant of what was going on around him and who people were."
The sheriff's spokesman said medications were present and those at the home, including Jean Kasem, said appropriate medical care was being provided. Medical professionals, including doctors and visiting nurses, have been "attending him as required," Wilson said.
Kerri Kasem's court filings state her father is suffering from a form of dementia called Lewy Body Disease.
The sheriff's spokesman noted that the officers who delivered the court order were "basically the messengers between the courts in California" and Kasem's connections in Washington.
"We wouldn't enforce anything until we were directed by the Washington court and coordinated with our prosecutor's office," Wilson said. "That hasn't happened."
Kasem gained fame with his radio music countdown shows, "American Top 40" and "Casey's Top 40," and he was the voice of Shaggy in the cartoon "Scooby Doo."

Casey Kasem's wife ordered to appear in court
May 30, 2014

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (AP) - The wife of ailing radio personality Casey Kasem is expected to appear in court Friday in Washington state as part of an ongoing dispute with a stepdaughter who has been given authority to determine whether her father is receiving adequate medical care.

The 82-year-old Kasem and his wife, Jean, have been staying with family friends in Kitsap County, west of Seattle.

Sheriff's officers this week delivered documents to Jean Kasem warning that her failure to appear in Kitsap County court could lead to a warrant for her arrest.

A spokesman for Kerri Kasem has said she has a Washington court order that allows her to see her father.

Kerri Kasem has said in court filings that her father suffers from a form of dementia called Lewy Body Disease.

Earlier this month Los Angeles Superior Court judge Daniel S. Murphy ordered Jean Kasem to comply with court orders allowing doctors to evaluate her husband, and to let his daughter Kerri see him. He also ordered Jean Kasem to surrender her husband's passport and temporarily suspended her powers to determine her husband's medical care.

Spokesman: Casey Kasem taken to medical facility
June 2, 2014

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (AP) — A spokesman for Casey Kasem's daughter says the ailing radio personality has been taken by ambulance to a hospital or medical facility in Washington state.
Danny Deraney told The Associated Press that Kerri Kasem accompanied her father when an ambulance took him Sunday afternoon to receive care. He didn't know where the 82-year-old entertainer went.
His condition is not known, but Kerri Kasem said in court Friday that her father is suffering from bedsores and lung and bladder infections. She also has said her father has a form of dementia.

Casey Kasem alert but in critical condition
June 5, 2014

(CNN) -- Renowned radio personality Casey Kasem is in critical condition at a hospital in western Washington, a spokesman for St. Anthony Hospital told CNN in a written statement Thursday.
"Mr. Kasem is alert and appears comfortable at this time," Scott Thompson, a spokesman for the facility in Gig Harbor added.
The 82-year-old former host of "American Top 40" and "Casey's Top 40" is receiving antibiotics through IVs, blood pressure support medicine and care for his bed sores, Thompson said.
Kasem was admitted to the hospital Sunday after one of his daughters and an ambulance crew retrieved him from a home where he and his wife were staying with friends.
"Any further updates on Mr. Kasem's condition will be at the discretion and approval of his children," Thompson said.
The radio icon has been at the center of a family feud between Jean Kasem, his wife of 34 years, and his three children from his first marriage.
Kerri Kasem; her sister, Julie; and their brother, Mike Kasem, have contended since last year that Jean Kasem has prevented the three siblings from visiting their father.
Kasem has Lewy body disease, the most common type of progressive dementia after Alzheimer's, and has been bed-ridden for some time.
He had been at a facility in Santa Monica, California, before Jean Kasem took him to Washington state after his daughter Kerri Kasem won temporary conservatorship over her father's care.
Last week, a Washington court granted Kerri Kasem the right to visit her father one hour a day and to have him examined by a doctor.
On Friday afternoon, a Kitsap County judge will continue the hearing and get an update on the situation, said Danny Deraney, a representative of Kerri Kasem.
Deraney expected the judge to rule on whether Jean Kasem would have to let Kerri Kasem have more input on where her father lives and who cares for him.

I really hope someone comes to their senses.  I hope Mr. Kasem gets the care he needs, particularly since it appears he is medically fragile.  I wish a third party with no interest (not for either side but for Mr. Kasem!) could be appointed.  It's a shame this gentlemen was dragged around like he was for five days, particularly at his age and his condition.  It sounds to me like there are certain parties that may need to be investigated and maybe even a psychological exam or two.  It's so sad to see an elderly man with medical issues treated this way.       JMHO What are the priorties?

Casey Kasem's Harrowing Five-Day Road Trip Revealed
June 6, 2014

As Casey Kasem's health has deteriorated over the last month, and his family fought publicly about his medical care and visitation rights, many have wondered why he is 1,200 miles from home in his fragile condition.

The 82-year-old radio icon has been diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia, and doctors say, he is "near the end of his life."

On Friday, after a Kistsap Superior Court hearing in which his wife, Jean Kasem, was found in contempt of court, new details emerged about the five-day road trip in May that involved four states and ended in Springdale, Washington at the home of a family he's never even met.

For nearly a year, Jean Kasem, 59, shut out Casey Kasem's children from his previous marriage and other family members from visiting him or speaking to him on the phone. Jean Kasem hasn't explained why in detail but she has accused the children of wanting to take the radio icon's $80 million fortune.
After not seeing her father for five months, Kerri Kasem, 41, figured out he was at the Berkeley East Convalescent Hospital and visited him with her sister, Julie, 38. On Friday, after the hearing in Washington, Kerri Kasem gave this account about what happened next:

"A few hours later, at 2:30 a.m., my stepmother and her daughter—my half sister—went in and took my father from his bed against doctor's orders," she said, adding that the hospital security's cameras caught all of it. "Adult Protective Services was called. Against them, against the nurse's orders, Jean grabbed my father, stole all of the equipment he was attached to, and threw him in the back seat of the car and drove off."

The family heard from a relative of Jean Kasem's that she was trying to take Casey Kasem out of the country or, at least, onto an Indian reservation, Kerri Kasem said. When Jean Kasem realized her plans had been discovered, she changed her course.

Jean Kasem drove to Las Vegas, where they checked into the Vdara Hotel & Spa. There, they met up with a friend, who drove them to Arizona. But then they returned to Las Vegas, where they flew on a private jet to Washington.

The trip lasted five days.

"My father is very fragile, very sick," Kerri Kasem said. "During that little trip he took, he incurred a huge, huge bed sore. This is in the doctor's notes. He did not have medication. She was feeding him Ensure through his feeding tube."
The driver of the private ambulance that picked Casey Kasem up at the Washington airport called Adult Protective Services, sensing something was wrong. On May 13, Kitsap Sherrif's deputies found the family, after a judge ordered law enforcement to get involved. Jean Kasem told them the family was on vacation.

By then, the judge had also appointed Kerri Kasem temporary conservator over her father's healthcare.

"People believe my dad went from his home to his friends he's known his whole life," Kerri Kasem said. "They are people that Jean's parents knew in Guam in the '60s. They've never even seen my Dad. I don't even think Jean has seen them until this time."

Once she took charge, Kerri Kasem received her father's medical records from Berkeley East and learned that neither Casey Kasem's wife or 24-year-old daughter, Liberty, had visited him in four months.

The night Jean Kasem removed her husband from the facility she told the nurse, "We're getting him out of here because his kids got to see him and we're not allowed to see him."

Despite a judge's ruling that Kerri Kasem is in charge over his healthcare, Jean Kasem continued to keep her out of her father's life, even hiring a motorcycle club to provide security and keep Kerri Kasem out of the house, according to documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court. When Kerri Kasem arrived on June 1 with an ambulance to pick up her father, Jean Kasem threw a pound of frozen ground beef at her.
Sadly, there is more...

Judge: Casey Kasem should be fed, hydrated
June 9, 2014

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge ruled Monday that Casey Kasem should be fed, hydrated and medicated while a court-appointed attorney evaluates the health of the ailing radio personality after his daughter moved to implement end of life measures.
Kasem, who has dementia, was in critical condition in a Washington state hospital.
His daughter Kerri Kasem, who has been placed in temporary control of his treatment, consulted with doctors and decided in recent days to stop giving her father food, water and medications, attorneys said in court.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Daniel S. Murphy ruled that Casey Kasem should receive the treatments while an attorney appointed by the judge meets with Kasem and his doctors.
Kasem was admitted to the hospital with an infected bedsore last week.
Kerri Kasem decided to begin end-of-life measures after doctors determined that feeding and hydrating the celebrity had become increasingly painful, attorney Troy Martin said in court. The judge's ruling is likely to cause the former "American Top 40" host more pain, he said.
Casey Kasem's wife of 34 years, Jean Kasem, appeared in court and said she supported Murphy's ruling and will ask to be restored as her husband's caretaker.
"Only God knows when to take someone," she said.
Outside court, she lashed out at Kerri Kasem and judges who have criticized her for refusing to cooperate with her stepdaughter, who was named as Casey Kasem's temporary conservator last month after he was moved to Washington state.
"Everybody is standing by and watching her kill my husband," Jean Kasem said after court.
Jean and Kerri Kasem have been fighting in courts in Washington state and Los Angeles over his care.
Jean Kasem has accused Kerri Kasem of trying to hasten her father's death so she could receive her share of his estate, a claim that was denied.
Danny Deraney, a publicist for Kerri Kasem, said she and her siblings have repeatedly said they are only concerned with their father's well-being, not altering his estate plans.
Kasem set aside $2 million to be split by his three adult children from a previous marriage, including Kerri Kasem, according to Jean Kasem's attorney Steve Haney. A daughter of Jean and Casey Kasem also was added to the trust, Deraney said.
Murphy scheduled a hearing for Friday to receive an update about Kasem's health. Jean Kasem's attorney, Steve Haney, said it was unclear how much longer the celebrity had to live.
Despite the family acrimony, Murphy said Kerri and Jean Kasem seemed to be doing what was best for Casey Kasem.
"It appears to the court that all parties have the best interest of Mr. Kasem at heart," the judge said.

Casey Kasem: Judge OKs move to 'comfort-oriented care' for radio host
June 11, 2014

A judge on Wednesday upheld Casey Kasem's health directive to stop the radio legend's nutrition and hydration during an ex parte hearing in Los Angeles, an attorney for daughter Kerri Kasem told The Times.
The move by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Daniel S. Murphy reverses a decision he'd handed down Monday, ordering the continued feeding and hydration of the 82-year-old, at the request of his wife, while he's in hospice care in Washington state. Jean Kasem, married to Casey since 1980, has been feuding with the radio icon's three children by his first wife.

Murphy also decided that Kerri Kasem would remain her father's temporary conservator.

Doctors said that "continuation of artificial nutrition and hyrdation is not in the patient's best interests because it will at best prolong the dying process for him and will certainly add suffering to an already terribly uncomfortable dying process," according to documents filed by Kerri Kasem's attorney.

The onetime "Top 40" host suffers from Lewy body dementia as well as bed sores.

"The court's decision today upheld our father's explicit wishes as expressed by him in his health directive," the family said in a Wednesday statement that cited Casey Kasem's wishes as expressed in a 2011 advance healthcare directive.

Casey Kasem's Long Distance Dedications and  Music Trivia were really neat part of his shows.  Just remembering...

Casey Kasem's 'American Top 40' reached for the stars
June 15, 2014

America's radio show was born on America's birthday. Casey Kasem, who died Sunday — Father's Day — at 82, kicked off "American Top 40" on July 4, 1970, his velvet voice leading listeners through a march of popular music that ended with the No. 1 tune, Three Dog Night's "Mama Told Me Not to Come." To mark the loss of Kasem, on June 21-22, "American Top 40" will dedicate the program to him, featuring long-distance dedications and other highlights from his decades of hosting.

Musical trivia
An unparalleled storyteller, Kasem loved to drop a teasing question about a song or a band, then cut to commercial, making his trivia so tantalizing that listeners just had to stay tuned to find out the answer. Which artist's career began with a busted television set? (Michael Jackson — when it broke he started singing with his brothers.) Who had the most No. 1 albums without a Top 40 single? (Comic and mood-music expert Jackie Gleason, at least at the time.) Good luck turning off the radio when Kasem still had the answer hanging out there.

Long Distance Dedications
Who can forget the tear-jerking Long Distance Dedications, where Kasem would read a letter asking him to play a song for a loved one, then deliver the requested tune? They were like mini reality shows. The first, in 1978, sought Neil Diamond's "Desiree" for a girlfriend moving to Germany. Others cried out to lost siblings, praised favorite teachers, comforted hospitalized children. And some dedications were to the famous — the crew of the Challenger was memorialized with "Come Sail Away" by Styx. Above all, the dedications were real letters from real people, and by putting them on the air, Kasem honored all our griefs and losses.

Daughter's rep: Casey Kasem's body still unburied
July 15, 2014

SEATTLE -- A spokesman for Casey Kasem's daughter says the famous radio host's unburied body remains at a funeral home in Tacoma, Washington, a month after his death.
Danny Deraney, publicist for Kerri Kasem, says Kasem's children from his first marriage hope he will be buried at Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, California, as he wished.
Kasem died June 15 at a hospital in Washington state. Deraney says the celebrity's second wife, Jean Kasem, has the rights to his body but has not yet arranged for him to be buried.
Hospital spokesman Scott Thompson with St. Anthony Hospital says Kasem's wife collected his remains from the hospital after he died, but Thompson did not know what arrangements she made.

Publicist: Casey Kasem to be buried in Norway
August 15, 2015

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The wife of Casey Kasem plans to bury the late radio personality in Norway — contrary to Kasem's desire to be interred in Los Angeles and against the wishes of his adult children, a publicist for Kasem's daughter said Friday.
The children were working with a private investigator but have few legal options to prevent the overseas burial, publicist Danny Deraney told The Associated Press.
Teruyuki Olsen, a lawyer for Jean Kasem, did not return an email seeking comment. As the spouse of the radio personality, she is conservator of his body, said Deraney, who works for Kerri Kasem.
It was unclear when the burial might occur and why Jean Kasem selected Norway.
Kasem, the host of "American Top 40," died on June 15 at a hospital in Gig Harbor, Washington. He was 82 and suffering from dementia. His death followed a lengthy battle over his care between Jean Kasem and his three adult children from his first marriage.
Deraney said burial outside the United States would be contrary to what Casey Kasem had wanted.
"He publicly made it clear to his friends, his kids, that he wanted to be buried in Forest Lawn in Glendale, in Los Angeles," the publicist said
