N.Y. man who shot dead 2 firefighters killed grandmother in 1980
By Greg Botelho, CNN

 ::snipping2::
CNN) -- William Spengler had killed before.

The first time, presumably, was in 1980. Then about 40 years old, Spengler struck his grandmother with a hammer. A year later, he was convicted of first-degree manslaughter in her death.

Flash forward to before dawn Monday, in Webster, New York, a town of about 43,000 people located 10 miles east of Rochester. That's when and where, Police Chief Gerald Pickering said, Spengler presumably set his and his sister's home ablaze, lugged weapons up a hill, then waited.

When local firefighters arrived at the scene, Spengler fired and killed again.
 ::snipping2::
He'd accumulated weapons, bringing "several different types" with him before the shootings, the police chief said. It is not known how he obtained these firearms, but ex-felons are not allowed to possess weapons.

But because Spengler had them, two families are in mourning. Many of his former neighbors are homeless, because having a gunman on the loose slowed fire crews' efforts to corral a blaze that eventually destroyed seven homes.

"It's Christmas Eve. This is a day where people are getting together to celebrate a holiday," Lt. Gov. Bob Duffy told reporters in Webster. "This tragedy is just unthinkable and unspeakable."

It's really sad when first responders are fired on.     I have family who serve and have served.  It's crazy when a paramedic has to wear a bullet proof vest, or when they find  bullet holes in their ambulance as has happened.  I don't know about other places, but in my area, firefighters and paramedic/emt's aren't allowed to have guns.  Anyone that attacks them knows they are sitting ducks.

Police: NY gunman set ‘trap’ for firefighters
December 24, 2012

WEBSTER, N.Y. (AP) -- An ex-con gunned down two firefighters after luring them to his neighborhood by setting a car and a house ablaze early Monday, then took shots at police and committed suicide while several homes burned.
Authorities used an armored vehicle to help residents flee dozens of homes on the shore of Lake Ontario a day before Christmas. Police restricted access to the neighborhood, and officials said it was unclear whether there were other bodies in the seven houses left to burn.
The gunman’s sister, who lived with him, was unaccounted for. The gunman’s motive was unknown.
William Spengler fired at the four firefighters when they arrived shortly after 5:30 a.m. at the blaze in Webster, a suburb of Rochester, town police Chief Gerald Pickering said. The first police officer who arrived chased the gunman and exchanged shots. Spengler lay in wait outdoors for the firefighters’ arrival, then opened fire probably with a rifle and from atop an earthen berm, Pickering said.
“It does appear it was a trap,” he said.
Spengler had served more than 17 years in prison for beating his 92-year-old paternal grandmother to death with a hammer in 1980 at the house next to where Monday’s attack happened, Pickering said. Spengler, 62, was paroled in 1998 and had led a quiet life since, authorities said. Convicted felons are not allowed to possess weapons.
Two firefighters, one of whom also was a town police lieutenant, died at the scene, and two others were hospitalized. An off-duty officer who was passing by also was injured.
Another police officer, the one who exchanged gunfire with Spengler, “in all likelihood saved many lives,” Pickering said.
 ::snipping2::
Spengler lived in the house with his sister, Cheryl Spengler, and his mother, Arline Spengler, who died in October. He had originally been charged with murder in connection with grandmother Rose Spengler’s death but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter.
A friend said William Spengler didn’t seem violent but hated his sister. Roger Vercruysse lived next door to Spengler and recalled a man who doted on his mother, whose obituary suggested contributions to the West Webster Fire Department.
“He loved his mama to death,” said Vercruysse, who last saw his friend about six months ago. “I think after his mama passed, he went crazy.”
Vercruysse also said Spengler “couldn’t stand his sister” and “stayed on one side of the house and she stayed on the other.”
The West Webster Fire District learned of the fire early Monday after a report of a car and house on fire on Lake Road, on a narrow peninsula where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario, Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn said.
The fire appeared from a distance as a pulsating ball of flame glowing against the early morning sky, flames licking into treetops and reflecting on the water, with huge bursts of smoke billowing away in a brisk wind.
Two of the firefighters arrived on a fire engine and two in their own vehicles, Pickering said. After Spengler fired, one of the wounded men fled, but the other three couldn’t because of flying gunfire.
A police armored vehicle was used to recover two men, and eventually it removed 33 people from nearby homes, the police chief said. The gunfire initially kept firefighters from battling the blazes.
The dead men were identified as police Lt. Michael Chiapperini, 43, the Webster Police Department’s public information officer; and 19-year-old Tomasz Kaczowka, also a 911 dispatcher.
Pickering described Chiapperini as a “lifetime firefighter” with nearly 20 years in the department, and he called Kaczowka a “tremendous young man.”
 ::snipping2::
The two wounded firefighters, Joseph Hofstetter and Theodore Scardino, were in guarded condition in the intensive care unit at Strong Memorial Hospital, authorities said. Both were awake and alert and are expected to recover.
Hofstetter, also a full-timer with the Rochester Fire Department, was hit once in the pelvis, and the bullet lodged in his spine, authorities said. Scardino was hit in the chest and knee.

Shooter who ambushed firefighters left note showing intent to burn, kill
December 25, 2012

(CNN) -- A sniper who ambushed volunteer firefighters in upstate New York on Monday, killing two and seriously wounding two others, left a note saying he hoped to burn down his neighborhood and kill as many people as possible, police said Tuesday.
William Spengler, 62, used a Bushmaster semiautomatic rifle, the same kind of weapon used in the assault on Sandy Hook Elementary School, Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said.
The shooter, who was convicted of killing his grandmother decades ago, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound hours later.

Pickering, at a news conference Tuesday, read a sentence from the three-page typewritten note that detectives believe Spengler's left behind: "I still have to get ready to see how much of the neighborhood I can burn down and do what I like doing best -- killing people."
The note indicated Spengler's intentions, but not his motive, Pickering said. The rest of the contents will not be made public because it is evidence in a criminal investigation, he said.
 ::snipping2::
One theory is that he was upset about a donation his mother, who died in the past year, made to the fire department, he said. Another theory is there could be a connection to his arrest in the killing of his grandmother, he said.
Spengler was convicted in 1981 of first-degree manslaughter in the death of his grandmother and had been released on supervised parole, Pickering said.
Investigators have been unable to find Spengler's sister, who lived in the home with him, Pickering said.

One of the guns recovered was a military-style .223-caliber semiautomatic Bushmaster rifle with flash suppression, the same make and caliber weapon used in the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., Pickering said.
 ::snipping2::
Pickering said authorities were still looking for Spengler's 67-year-old sister, Cheryl Spengler, who lived in the house with him. Their mother, Arline, also lived there until she died in October.

WEBSTER, N.Y. (AP) — Police have found human remains in the burned-out home of the Webster, N.Y., ex-con who killed two firefighters and believe the victim is the gunman's sister.

Man who killed 2 firemen left note on killing plan
December 25, 2012

WEBSTER, N.Y. (AP) — The ex-con who lured two firefighters to their deaths in a blaze of gunfire left a rambling typewritten note saying he wanted to burn down the neighborhood and "do what I like doing best, killing people," police said Tuesday as they recovered burned human remains believed to be the gunman's missing sister.
 ::snipping2::
The human remains were found in the charred house that Spengler shared with his 67-year-old sister, Cheryl. A medical examiner will need to determine the identity and cause of death because the body is badly burned.

Spengler killed himself as seven houses burned around him Monday on a narrow spit of land along Lake Ontario in this suburb of Rochester. A friend said Spengler hated his sister but the chief said the note left by him did not give a motive.

No other bodies were found, and police late Tuesday said the on-scene investigation had been completed.

Two firefighters were shot dead in the ambush and two others are hospitalized in stable condition.

Tomasz Kaczowka remembered as 'everyone's little brother'
6:30 PM, Dec 24, 2012
 ::snipping2::

When 19-year-old Tomasz Kaczowka hopped out of his bed at the firehouse and onto the truck bound for a house fire on Lake Road, where he would be shot dead minutes later, he was standing in for older members of the West Webster Fire Department.

It is tradition at the department, which is run by about 125 volunteer firefighters, for unattached firefighters to sleep at the firehouse during the Christmas season so their colleagues who are married with children can be at home for the holiday.

“He didn’t have to be there,” said Al Sienkiewicz, a former chief and now spokesman for the fire department. “He was bunking in voluntarily so others could stay at home.”

Autopsy: Gunman in N.Y. firefighter ambush killed self
December 27, 2012

Police say an autopsy shows the U.S. gunman who lured two firefighters to their deaths died of a self-inflicted shot to the head and wasn't hit by return fire from a police officer.

A positive identification of the body found in 62-year-old gunman William Spengler's burned house hasn't been made. Police believe it was his sister.

Police say autopsies Thursday show West Webster firefighter Michael Chiapperini died of a single gunshot and Tomasz Kaczowka died of two shots.

Spengler, who killed his grandmother in 1980, set his house in New York state on fire and ambushed the arriving firefighters just before dawn on Christmas Eve. He wounded two other firefighters and a police officer.

The two wounded men, Joseph Hofstetter and Theodore Scardino have been upgraded to satisfactory condition at Rochester's Strong Memorial Hospital.

Woman, 24, who bought assault rifle AND a shotgun for gunman who killed firefighters in deadly Christmas Eve ambush appears in court
Friday, Jan 11 2013 9PM
 ::snipping2::

Dawn Nguyen of Rochester, New York, was a former neighbor of William Spengler, 62, and allegedly purchased the AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and 12-gauge shotgun used in the shooting on his behalf

 ::snipping2::
A 24-year-old charged with providing guns to a felon who later used the weapons to savagely kill volunteer firefighters on the morning of Christmas Eve has pleaded not guilty to her alleged crimes.

Dawn Nguyen of Rochester, New York is accused of filing a false business record when she bought two guns later used by ex-convict William Spengler Jr. to kill two firefighters and wound three other first responders to a fire he set in Webster.

Prosecutors said Nguyen indicated on a form that a 12-gauge shotgun and AR-15 semiautomatic rifle she bought at a Gander Mountain store in Henrietta in 2010 were for her, but they were really for Spengler, an ex-convict who wasn't allowed to have them.

Woman convicted in case tied to firefighter ambush
April 15, 2014

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The woman charged with buying the guns a man used to kill two firefighters on Christmas Eve 2012 was found guilty Tuesday of first-degree falsification of a business record.

A jury in Rochester, N.Y., found 25-year-old Dawn Nguyen, of Greece, N.Y., guilty because she lied when she said on a gun purchase form in 2010 that the rifle and shotgun were for her use. Authorities said the guns were not for her, but her neighbor, William Spengler Jr.

A convicted felon who was barred from owning guns, Spengler used those firearms on Christmas Eve 2012 to shoot and kill two West Webster, N.Y., firefighters and wound two others before he committed suicide.
Spengler set fire to his Webster, N.Y., home early on the morning of Dec. 24, 2012, then shot at responding firefighters, killing Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka and wounding Joseph Hofstetter and Ted Scardino.

Prosecutor Tim Prosperi said the case wasn't about Spengler.

"It was about getting guns in the hands of a felon," he said.

Nguyen, who also faces federal charges for an illegal purchase of the firearms, selling to a known felon and an unlawful use of marijuana, will be sentenced May 19. She faces a maximum sentence of four years in prison.

After the verdict, Scardino said, "Nothing will bring back the two guys we lost. That's due to the actions of Dawn Nguyen."

Someone is getting off really, really easy, imo. Making firearms available to a man who was a known felon and convicted of killing his grandmother?!

New York woman linked to firefighter deaths sent to prison for buying guns used in shooting
May 19, 2014

ROCHESTER, N.Y. –  A 25-year-old woman has been sentenced to up to four years in prison for lying on firearm transaction documents when she bought guns used by a man to kill two New York volunteer firefighters on Christmas Eve 2012.

Dawn Nguyen (when) of the town of Greece drew the maximum term of 1 1/3 to four years in state prison when she was sentenced Monday in Rochester.

She was convicted last month of falsifying business records when she filled out forms to buy a rifle and shotgun in 2010 for her neighbor William Spengler Jr.

Spengler was prohibited from owning weapons because of his felony record for killing his grandmother.
