Nikki Burgess

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Metro police say a search warrant has been executed in East Tennessee in the disappearance of Nashville woman Nikki Burgess.
Burgess, 36, was last seen May 23 when she dropped her child off at school and then disappeared. Police had previously said they believe Burgess didn't leave on her own free will.

Detectives on Thursday were at the Andersonville, TN, home of Caleb J. Cannon, the father of Burgess' 10-year-old son.

Police say based on the investigation thus far, Burgess is likely dead, and Cannon is considered a person of interest.

Investigators collected a DNA sample from Cannon on Tuesday.

Their child is now in the custody of the Department of Children's Services while the investigation continues.

Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department said a search warrant was executed at the residence of Caleb J. Cannon, located on Lambdin Road in Andersonville. Cannon is the father of Nichole “Nikki” Burgess’s 10-year-old son.

Burgess, age 36, was reported missing by a friend on May 25. Her car was found with her purse inside of it at her duplex, located on Oak Vale Drive in Hermitage. Her two dogs were also found inside the home.

Police said detectives, along with crime scene specialists, have traveled to Anderson County several times over the past week, as part of the investigation.

On Tuesday, a search warrant was served on Cannon, requesting a DNA sample.

Detectives told an Anderson County judge that based on the investigation thus far, Burgess is likely dead and that Cannon is considered a person of interest.

Detectives learned that Burgess was last heard from by her best friend via text message on the afternoon of May 23. "Caleb" was reportedly mentioned in that message.
That afternoon, Cannon, who had visitation privileges with the 10-year-old every other weekend, picked him up from school. They went to Burgess' home, but she was not there. Police said Cannon then took the child to his home in Anderson County later that evening.

The 10-year-old has been placed in the custody of the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services while the investigation continues.

Missing Hermitage woman’s friends still await answers

Police said Burgess, 37, was last heard from May 23, when she sent a friend a text message that indicated she was having an altercation with Cannon, according to a Davidson County search warrant affidavit.

In a court hearing tied to obtaining the warrants, Metro detective Steve Jolley said that Cannon is a person of interest based on the investigation and that he believed Burgess was likely no longer alive.

A warrant also was issued Tuesday for a DNA sample from Cannon, the release said.

On May 23, police said, Cannon went to pick up their son from school and went to Burgess’ home on Oak Vale Drive. Cannon and their son then went to Anderson County later that evening as part of the custody agreement between Burgess and Cannon.

The affidavit said Burgess was supposed to meet a friend in Sparta on May 24 but never showed up.

The Tennessee Department of Children’s Services now has custody of the 10-year-old, police said.
