An arrest has been made in the case of a 19-year-old woman who disappeared more than a week ago and remains missing.

Lea Chali Porter was visiting a close friend in Westminster when she left in the middle of the night. That friend — Christopher Waide — was the last known person to see her and is now the suspect in the case and in custody.

Westminster police, at this point, told CBS4 the case is “leaning toward a murder.”

A Westminster man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, in connection with the disappearance of a 19-year-old woman, and police are actively looking for the woman's body.

Christopher Adam Waide, 23, is being held in the Adams County Jail in connection with the disappearance of Lea Chali Porter.

Porter was reported missing by her mother on June 5, according to the Westminster Police Department.

Waide is being "cooperative" in the ongoing investigation and he's made a "statement," said Cheri Spottke, a Westminster Police Department spokeswoman.

"He is helping with finding the body," Spottke said.

The court file on the case has been sealed.

Friend Allegedly Confesses To Killing Missing Teen
Updated: Sat 1:10 PM, Jun 14, 2014

The case of a missing 19-year-old took a tragic turn after the family says her friend admitted to killing her.

Authorities say June 5 was the last time any family member spoke with Lea Porter. Her family told sister station KCNC that Porter, from Pueblo, was distraught over her boyfriend leaving town, and went to her friend Christopher Waide's apartment in Westminster. She wasn't seen or heard from since. Her car was left at the apartment complex parking lot; her personal belongings were gone--the only lead police had for a week.

Thursday afternoon, the family says Waide confessed to killing Porter. The family told KCNC that Waide confessed to Porter's brother and her boyfriend, who recorded the confession. A friend of Porter's brother then called police. Ten minutes after confessing, Waide surrendered.

Waide allegedly told police he killed Porter at Caroll Butts Park in Westminster, and detailed how he did it. As of Thursday night, police have not found her body.

Westminster police consider searching dump for woman's body

Detectives searching for the body of a missing 19-year-old Pueblo woman are hoping to find evidence in vehicles connected to the suspect that will lead them to her remains, authorities say.

Additional search warrants were sought late Friday after evidence identifying other vehicles tied to suspect Christopher Adam Waide, 23, was found in his apartment, Westminster police spokeswoman Cheri Spottke said Saturday.

Waide is being held in the Adams County Jail for investigation of first-degree murder in the death of Lea Chali Porter.

Waide signed a statement and is helping police find Porter's body.

"We want to make sure we are not being led in the wrong direction," Spottke said.

Waide's car, which had been in the parking lot of his home in the Park Place at 92nd Apartments, had already been impounded and searched. Detectives searching his second floor home Friday found other evidence indicating Waide had access to other vehicles, Spottke said.

Despite Waide's help, Porter's body has not yet been found. Waide and Porter attended the same high school and they recently reconnected on Facebook. Porter lived in Pueblo and she was last known to be visiting friends in Westminster.

One location that Westminster police may search is the Allied Waste Services Tower Road Landfill at Tower Road and 88th Avenue in Commerce City, Spottke said.

Christopher Adam Waide arrested in connection of Lea Porter's disappearance

Public Information officer Cheri Spottke confirmed that Porter's brother and her boyfriend allegedly taped Waide confessing to killing Porter. She said officials still do not know the whereabouts of Porter, but they are looking into a couple of different leads.

"We don't have Lea back yet," she said Friday. "We are following some avenues to get her back at this time."

Spottke said there are no other suspects or persons of interest.

Porter's mother, Rene Jackson of Rockvale, said her daughter and Waide were former classmates, and she went to his Westminster apartment June 3. Jackson filed a missing person's report with law enforcement June 5, and Tuesday, authorities searched Waide's apartment.

"We love her, and we want her home — in any condition, we want our Lea home with us," Jackson said Wednesday.

Waide is in custody at the Adams County Detention Facility on a no-bond hold. His first court appearance will be an advisement hearing Monday.

Westminster man appears in court in disappearance of Pueblo teen

BRIGHTON — A Westminster man waived the reading of his first advisement Monday in a case linked to the disappearance of a 19-year-old Pueblo woman.

Christopher Adam Waide, 23, dressed in a jail jumpsuit, his hands handcuffed, appeared Monday in an Adams County courtroom in the disappearance of Lea Chali Porter.

Family members of both Waide and Porter were in court, but Waide made little, if any, eye contact with his family. He was stoic, staring straight ahead for most of the hearing.

In the hallway, after the brief court appearance, Michael Jackson, Porter's stepfather, talked with the media.

Jackson, his eyes welling at times, pulled no punches.

"I want him dead," Jackson said. "I want to kill him."

As of Monday morning, Porter's body has still not been found, said Cheri Spottke, a Westminster Police Department spokeswoman.

One location Westminster police may search is the Allied Waste Services Tower Road Landfill at Tower Road and East 88th Avenue in Commerce City, police said.

At the courthouse, Jackson said Waide has admitted to stabbing and strangling Porter, and then putting her body in a trash bag and then a garbage Dumpster.

But Jackson believes Waide could be misleading police on where a body may be found.

"He knows it is in his best interest that it's not found," Jackson said.

Jackson also talked about a document that Waide allegedly authored back in high school, in which he wrote about abducting, raping, and killing a woman.

Police investigators are aware of the alleged document and are "looking into it," Spottke said.

Formal filing of charges against Waide was scheduled for this Friday.

The case file remains sealed.

Man Charged With Murder Of Pueblo Woman Who Remains Missing
June 19, 2014 1:30 PM

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) – The Westminster man who allegedly admitted to killing his friend was formally charged on Thursday.

Christopher Waide, 23, faces charges that include first-degree murder, sexual assault and tampering with evidence.

He is suspected of killing Lea Chali Porter, 19, of Pueblo, although her body has not been found.

Porter was visiting Waide at his apartment when she disappeared. Her car was still sitting in the parking lot outside the apartment but her personal possessions were gone. Porter hadn’t used her cellphone since June 3 and her social media accounts and credit cards hadn’t been active since then either.

Her family says Facebook messages show Porter rejected romantic advances from Waide before she visited with him.

Lea Porter disappearance: Murder, sexual assault, other charges filed against Christopher Waide
Posted: 11:34 AM, Jun 19, 2014

WESTMINSTER, Colo. - While police have not yet found the body of a missing woman, the district attorney has filed formal charges against the last man to see her, Christopher Adam Waide.

Lea Porter, 19, was reported missing June 5. Porter was from Pueblo. Investigators said she came to Westminster to visit Waide, an old friend from high school.

However, Porter's boyfriend, Jesse Mine, disputes that. He says they barely knew each other and that Porter only went to Waide's place to pass some time before meeting another friend.

Christopher Adam Waide, suspect in missing girl case, charged with first-degree murder
Posted:   06/20/2014 01:42:01 PM MDT

Brighton —  Christopher Adam Waide, a former Cotopaxi resident, is being charged with first-degree murder after the disappearance of a 2013 Florence High School graduate, Lea Chali Porter, 19.

Waide, 23, had charges formally filed against him Friday in the Adams County Courthouse. He is being charged with four felony offenses: murder in the first degree, felony murder, sexual assault and tampering with physical evidence.

A number of motions also were tended to Friday, one of which was the motion to set bail. District Judge John E. Popovich, Jr. said at this point, the offense is "non-bondable," but bond will be addressed at a combined preliminary and bond hearing.

The court set 8:30 a.m. July 8 to schedule the bond and preliminary hearing.

The investigation into the case is ongoing. Court documents, including the affidavit, remain sealed.

With No Body Found, Porter’s Boyfriend Says He’s Holding Out Hope
June 21, 2014 3:51 PM

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) – The boyfriend of a 19-year-old woman police believe has been murdered is still holding out hope that she will return, despite the fact that he says her friend confessed to him that he killed her.

Jessie asked that CBS4 not use his last name and requested that his face not be shown during his interview. He said his world went dark when Lea Chali Porter, of Pueblo, went missing. He described her as a “beam of light.”

“She was just funny, smart, beautiful. Absolutely beautiful, and about to go somewhere in life,” he said. “She had everything going for her.”

“I just think this guy Chris’s intelligence and sickness are being underestimated,” he said. He says Waide was in the military and also studied criminal justice.

Jessie said after two weeks of lies he and Maxx confronted Waide at a park on June 12 in Westminster and recorded the conversation.

“We stood up and said ‘Okay, now you are going to tell us what you did with our Lea. Tell us what you did. You know you want to get it off your chest,’” Jesse said. “And he started to confess.”

Westminster police arrested Waide that night.

Waide had told CBS4 in an interview a day before the critical conversation that Lea had left his apartment after an argument.

As the case against Waide moves through the legal system, Porter’s family and friends are still posting messages to the Help Find Lea Porter Facebook page.

“There is every reason to have hope and still be looking for Lea because the police don’t have a body. They cannot say she’s definitely not with us anymore,” Jessie said. “We need her back, one way or another.”

Westminster man admits to killing teen
12:41 p.m. MDT October 10, 2014

BRIGHTON - A man accused of murder in the death of 19-year-old Lea Porter admitted to killing her, according to court testimony by the lead Westminster Police detective on the case.

In court Friday, the judge found probable cause for 3 of 5 counts, including first-degree murder, sexual exploitation of a minor and tampering with evidence. Second-degree murder and sexual assault charges were dropped.

Christopher Waide told police he choked and cut Porter in his bedroom because she was asking him to buy her drugs, Det. Luis Lopez told the court.

Waide told detectives that he then put Porter's body in a large military duffle bag and put it in a dumpster outside of his apartment building.

Porter's body has not been found.
