Police investigate if Douglas Garland has links to other violent crimes

Global News has learned that investigators are now seeing if he has links to any other violent crimes, which experts say is common in cases like this.

“If you have unsolved crimes and you have no idea who might have done them, then you have an individual who you suspect is capable of doing a range of very violent actions, then it makes sense,” says forensic psychologist Dr. Perry Sirota. “There might be a fit between what this person is suspected of doing, because of course it’s alleged now and it might fit with a pattern of crimes that remain unsolved.”

One of the cases being looked at is the death of Helena Mihaljevic. The 32-year-old was found dead in a rural area near Airdrie in 2007, nearly a year after she went missing.

It truly amazes me how new forensics can solve so many "cold" cases.
What a blessing for law enforcement and families.

Nathan O’Brien investigation: CPS investigators head to Mexico
Canadian Press  |  August 5, 2014

Police investigators are in Mexico as part of an ongoing investigation into the disappearance of a five-year-old boy and his grandparents.

The bodies of Nathan O’Brien and Alvin and Kathy Liknes have not been recovered since the three disappeared from the couple’s Calgary home June 29, but police have laid three murder charges.

The couple had been having an estate sale that weekend as they downsized ahead of a move to Edmonton and then to a residence in Mexico. Nathan was at his grandparents’ house for a sleepover.

A police spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday that officers are in Mexico.

“It’s just making sure that all the avenues are covered. There’s nothing to it other than just crossing t’s and dotting the i’s,” said Calgary police spokeswoman Emma Poole. “We’re not going to get into details of how long they’ve been down there, where they are or how many went.”

Douglas Garland identity theft charges stayed by the Crown
Canadian Press  |  August 5, 2014

The Crown has stayed identity theft charges against a man accused of murder in the deaths of a five-year-old Calgary boy and his grandparents.

Douglas Garland was initially charged with identity theft in a matter unrelated to the disappearance of Nathan O’Brien and Alvin and Kathy Liknes in June.

Garland, who is 54, is scheduled to return to court next week on the murder charges.

A stay means charges can be activated any time within a year if new evidence arises.

Calgary police take trip to Mexico in case of missing trio

Last Updated Tuesday, August 5, 2014 6:17PM MDT

Detectives from the Calgary Police Service are in Mexico working with local authorities as part of the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Nathan O'Brien and Alvin and Kathy Liknes

Garland was originally arrested on identity theft charges but Crown Prosecutor, Shane Parker, says he has requested those charges be stayed.

“The evidence from the impersonation will be used as part of the murder case so there was no need to have separate proceedings,” said Parker.

Garland remains in police custody and is scheduled to be back in court on August 14, 2014.
