Police serve search warrant at home of missing 6-week-old baby
Posted 8:30 PM, September 1, 2014, by Megan Trent, Updated at 12:17am, September 2, 2014

by Megan Trent

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 1, 2014) – Police served a search warrant at the home of missing 6-week-old infant Delano Wilson Monday evening.

Rafael Diaz with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says this is standard procedure when a child is missing and does not necessarily indicate a new development in the case.

Police could be seen walking around the property with flashlights in the 500 block of Chase Street. More than a dozen officers were on the scene and a mobile crime lab was set up outside the home. As officers went in and out of the house, neighbors gathered outside to see what was happening.

Delano Wilson’s parents, Willie Wilson and Taniasha Perkins, could be seen on the front porch of the home along with other family members. Police took Perkins around to the side of the home, where she was questioned individually. Afterwards, Perkins was taken away in a police car, but she was not handcuffed.

Police continue to ask people with information about the disappearance of 6-week-old Delano Wilson to step forward.

Diaz says there have been a lot of resources dedicated to the case from the beginning.

“Obviously we want to make sure that we bring this child home, so we allocated a lot of resources to do that for a few days. I believe right now we’ve had about 200 plus manpower hours, boots on the ground, searching the area for that child.”

He says IMPD missing persons detectives are still searching the area and talking with people who live nearby. The FBI is continuing to offer their assistance when needed.

“Our focus right now is to still search the area in smaller patterns; not the full-out scale that we did last week, but detectives continue to be hopeful that tips will still continue to come in.”

While police are not giving up on their goal of bringing Delano home safely, Diaz says they need people to come forward with information.

“If there was ever a time when we need the public’s help, it’s in a case just like this,” says Diaz.

Anyone with information about Delano Wilson’s disappearance is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 262-STOP or IMPD’s missing persons hotline at 317-327-6915.

Police search parents' home for possible evidence in missing baby case

Posted: Sep 01, 2014 9:44 PM CST Updated: Sep 02, 2014 11:33 AM CST
By WTHR Channel 13 - email

INDIANAPOLIS - Crime scene investigators searched for more than eight hours Monday night the parents' home of a 1-month-old baby who went missing last week.

Eyewitness News spoke to one of the family members who said the house was ransacked inside. Numerous things were taken, including the seat to the baby's swing and a large patch of carpet from one of the rooms.

Officer Rafael Diaz, a spokesman for IMPD, said the service of a search warrant late Monday in the 500 block of Chase St. is "part of the long, ongoing investigation" of missing Delano Wilson.

Diaz said the search was part of the investigative process and was not connected to new information in the case.

When police arrived Monday night, they escorted the family members, including the baby's parents, out of the home.

IMPD said Monday morning that the department's primary focus remains on finding 6-week-old Delano Wilson.

"We continue to, in smaller patterns, search the area," the IMPD said. "We continue our public and internal announcements in search for Delano. We continue to ask the public for leads or information. We have no new plans for a massive search at this time, but if new information is discovered that could change."

Neighbors of Delano Wilson's family say they are at their wit's end.

"I just want to know if he's in there alive," one neighbor said. "Everybody out here has at least searched their trash can or their backyard for the baby from day one and we just want to know if he's alive and if he's not then and he's not in there, then we need to keep on looking for him."

Police have searched the nearby White River and have combed the nearby woods by air and on the ground with searchers and tracking dogs. At one point, police said they picked up the scent of Delano and or his father, but so far police have yet to find the missing baby.Delano's father, Willie Wilson, was questioned immediately after he reported the baby missing and the mother, Taniasha Perkins, was questioned for about seven hours.

Again, police said this is all part of the process.

If you have any information, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.

Authorities find nothing after search of Little Eagle Creek for Delano Wilson

By Kylie Conway Published: September 2, 2014, 4:01 pm
Updated: September 2, 2014, 10:17 pm

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The investigation into what happened to a local six-week old baby continues.  Police say baby Delano Wilson was last seen in the area of Oliver and Harding on the city’s southwest side.

On Tuesday investigators were looking into a new lead. Authorities were searching the area of Holt road and I-70. That is along the Little Eagle Creek. The location is not far from the neighborhood where little Delano Wilson was last seen.

Indianapolis Fire Department divers started there search at Little Eagle Creek around 10 Tuesday morning. However, they found nothing. According to IMPD, officers will continue to search areas they didn’t get to last week, saying no stone will go unturned.

IMPD wants anyone with any information to call.  However small or insignificant it may seem, IMPD says it doesn’t matter because that may be the one piece of information they need to find out what happened to Delano.

Then, late Monday night police conducted a search warrant on Wilson’s home.  For hours, combing through possessions and taking evidence to a crime lab unit.

“We was hoping for the best for the baby.  But, the way it looks I don’t think that’s going to be the results,” said Thomas Harding a neighbor.

Checking all angles, IMPD says in this type of circumstance, a search warrant is standard operating procedure.

“I don’t think you’d be doing your job correctly if you weren’t looking at every aspect surrounding the abduction or missing person,” said Bailey.

Christina Richey says she saw Wilson walk out of the Henry Street alley Wednesday.

“Yea.  He come out and kind of collapse, sit right there in the grass and then a couple minutes later the cops show up,” said Richey.

She says she’d seen Delano’s mother out with the baby plenty, but had never noticed Wilson until that day.

Police can’t give specifics regarding the investigation.  They just say their focus is on finding Delano and bringing him home.

Anyone with information that could possibly help, call 262-TIPS.

One week later, baby Delano still missing
By Kylie Conway Published: September 3, 2014, 4:40 pm

NDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The ongoing search for a missing 7-week-old baby turns up nothing for the seventh day in a row.

It’s been one week since Delano Wilson disappeared. But, so far police have found no signs of the infant. There hasn’t been a development in this case the past couple of days. But, no one’s giving up.

Neighbors can’t believe questions still remain an entire week after Willie Wilson said someone beat him and stole his baby.

For days, nothing happened. Then Monday night police served a search warrant to comb through their home looking for answers.

“I’ve never seen them tape off a whole block before just to search a house. But, you know, given the circumstances I understand,” said neighbor Christiana Richey.

One day later, SCUBA teams searched Little Eagle Creek. Wednesday, once again, there have been no answers and Delano’s parents are no longer welcoming conversation.

Police will still conduct spot searches following substantial leads.

If you have any information call CrimeStoppers at 317-262-TIPS.

Parents of Delano Wilson say they have nothing to hide

Posted: Sep 03, 2014 10:18 PM CST Updated: Sep 03, 2014 10:18 PM CST
By Emily Longnecker, WTHR reporter - bio | email

INDIANAPOLIS - 6-week-old Delano Wilson's parents have not been named as suspects or even persons of interests in this case.

Police have been very open about saying, though, that the couple's story about what happened to the baby has left them with some questions.

The couple told Eyewitness News they're very aware fingers are starting to point at them.

“We're not trying to hide from nothing,” Taniasha Perkins said from the Chase Street home she shares with her mother, boyfriend and two siblings.

That's the way Perkins and Willie Wilson, the baby's father, said it's been since last week when Wilson told police a couple kidnapped his 6-week-old son in broad daylight as he was walking with him around the block.

“I remember exactly what they look like. It was a white man. He had to be no younger than 30. He was bloodshot red eyes, aggressive. It looked like he was on drugs,” said Wilson.

“He was just looking like if he didn't get what he wanted he was going to kill,” he explained. “He was outta his mind. I mean, he hit me with my son in my arms."

Wilson told police he was knocked out, but came to - only to see the man and woman taking off with his son in a Blue Ford Taurus.

Sources told Eyewitness News a nearby security camera recorded Wilson walking without his baby before he called 911 to report the alleged kidnapping.

“The camera doesn't see towards the alley, but there's witnesses out there saying that they seen this blue car and that they seen a young lady. That's more than enough proof right there,” Wilson explained.

Whatever investigators have been looking for beyond the missing infant, their search brought them back to the couple's home this week.

“Delano's not here. Delano's just not here and he's out there somewhere and for you guys to be here, it just made me think like my son is out there somewhere and you guys are here, but why, we don't understand. You're supposed to be out there finding our son,” Perkins cried.

“They took carpet,” explained Perkins of what investigators removed from the home. “They took some of our items, the baby bassinet or the baby rocker. All that stuff. They took it."

Both parents said they've given police DNA and been questioned separately for hours.

“Seeing them throw my baby's picture in my face, calling me a killer saying that his, his own father would do that to him. It just. It hurts,” Perkins cried.

“They threw my son's picture in my face and they kept calling me a horrible dad,” Wilson cried.

“I understand you're doing your job. But we don't have anything to hide. We don't have anything to hide,” said Perkins.

A family member told Eyewitness News FBI investigators visited the home Wednesday night and questioned Taniasha Perkins.

Video at the link:

Reporter states that the family says Willie Wilson was on the phone and he often walks around while he's on the phone even with the baby, and that's what he was doing in the alley.

The mother says it was a normal day, she was just getting ready for work and the next thing you know this nightmare just happens out of nowhere.

That makes me think she may have been at home when it happened?  I'd assumed she was AT work.

Police chief calls missing baby search, “A case we have to put down”

Posted 4:53 PM, September 3, 2014, by Amanda Rakes - Digital Manager, Updated at 10:41pm, September 3, 2014

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Sept. 3, 2014)– It was a week ago Wednesday a west side man told police strangers kidnapped his baby from his arms in an alley not far from the family home.

While the search of Little Eagle Creek, a nearby wooded area and the banks of the White River have proven fruitless, detectives also have no evidence or eyewitness accounts to confirm the father’s story.

The search for 6-week-old Delano Anthony Wilson continues. While IMPD is leading the investigation, the FBI is involved as well.

Two federal agents came by the family’s house on Wednesday. They were inside for a short time before one of the agents left with Trina Perkins, Delano’s grandmother. They left in a van and returned less than an hour later. The agents then left with Taniasha Perkins, Delano’s mother, again returning less than an hour later.

“We’re not going away,” said IMPD Chief Rick Hite. “This is a case we have to put down.”

Detectives have repeatedly questioned the Delano’s mom and her brother. They spoke with them Monday night, while a search warrant was being served at their home in the 500 block of South Chase Street.

Swatches of carpeting and pieces of plumbing were among the items seized by investigators.

Willie Wilson, the child’s father who provided detectives with a detailed description of the alleged armed kidnapper, stayed behind and sobbed, refusing to talk to investigators without a lawyer present.

Chief Hite remains steadfast in his belief that the answers to the case of the missing infant can be found among the residents who live on that block southwest of downtown Indianapolis.

“I think people may not remember what they think is important or may not think what they remember is important, we need to have that information. Anything and everything is important at this point,” said Hite. “It’s not snitching. It’s about doing the right thing, and there’s never a wrong time to do that right thing. Now it’s time to do the right thing.”

A witness told FOX59 News and investigators that she spotted Wilson earlier on the morning of Aug. 27 running from the same alley, where hours later, he claimed he was the victim of an attempted robbery. Wilson said a white male with a pistol and a Hispanic female left behind his wallet, two cell phones and marijuana, but took his child.

The witness said that as soon as Wilson spotted her, he came to an abrupt halt and began walking back to his home.

While individual detectives and officers continued informal searches Wednesday, IMPD will return to the neighborhood Friday night as the southwest district will hold its late shift roll call near the home Delano shared with his parents and several extended family members.

The Ten Point Coalition is also considering a faith walk in the community Friday night to show its support for the recovery of the missing baby.

Crime Stoppers partners with IndyGo to get more tips
By Howard Monroe Published: September 11, 2014, 6:16 pm   Updated: September 11, 2014, 6:33 pm

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – In the hours and days following the disappearance of 6-week-old Delano Wilson, hundreds, if not thousands, of tips came in about his whereabouts.

Many of those tips went to Crime Stoppers. The anonymous tip line wants more, not only in that case, but in any crime. So, to reach as many people as possible, they are now advertising in all IndyGo buses.

“We were looking for a way to get into almost every area of Indianapolis,” said Steve DuBois, Director of Crime Stoppers Central Indiana.

There are more than 150 buses in IndyGo’s fleet and all of them will now have a sign in them advertising Crime Stoppers’ contact info.

“It’s constant, every day those signs are going to be there, so they may not need it today, they may not need it next week but next month they have information that they can pass on about a felon,” DuBois said.

“Because of the way we try to keep our tipsters anonymous, we won’t even acknowledge that an arrest came from one of our tips,” DuBois said.

There are three ways to contact Crimestoppers:

Text IndyCS and your tip to 274637 (CRIMES),
    Visit their website at crimetips.org
    Call their hotline at 317-262-TIPS

Parents of missing Indianapolis baby demand answers

"All we want at the end of the day, is our baby to be found," said Tanaisha Perkins, Delano's mother.

But the parents of missing infant Delano Wilson say they keep calling investigators for updates on the case and no one is calling them back.

"It's like just leaving us hanging us to drying. Don't nobody knows what's going on," said Willie Wilson, the baby's father.

It's been almost a month since Willie Wilson says a white man and a Latino woman robbed him at gunpoint in an alley near his house while he was walking with his infant son. Wilson told investigators the man attacked him, leaving him dazed, and then snatched the baby, taking off in a blue Ford Taurus.

"I can still recall everything. Everything. That's something you not gonna forget," said Wilson.

That's why Wilson says he's been searching online for a sketch artist to draw the people he says took his son.

Wilson says investigators haven't offered to provide one, and the cheapest he can find costs $100 an hour.

'I think they don't want to because they see me as a suspect still. That's why I haven't gotten a sketch artist. That's why haven't nobody answered my phone calls," said Wilson.

Police have said Wilson's story has left them with questions, but have never named him or the baby's mom as suspects. Investigators have questioned both parents and removed items from their home.

"Anything they want us to do, we're not hiding. We're here. They know where we're at. It's not like we're running from anybody. We're looking for our son," said Perkins.

Taniasha Perkins says that's what they're going to keep on doing until they find him.

"I feel in my spirit that my baby's okay. I just need him back with us, with his family," she said.

Backlog at Marion County crime lab means delays in 1,742 cases

INDIANAPOLIS - Results are still pending on more than 1,700 cases because of a significant backlog at the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency.

Evidence, scientists and technicians in the crime lab play a critical role in determining who will go to prison or who will go free.

Even evidence from two high-profile crimes -- missing baby Delano Wilson and slain teen Dominique Allen -- hangs in the balance because of the backlog.

One month ago Thursday, Indianapolis police and crime scene technicians spent hours in the home of the parents of 6-week-old Delano Wilson.

The child was allegedly snatched from the arms of his father less than a block from the family residence Aug. 27. Homicide investigators were still awaiting the forensic evidence recovered inside the home.

"It's not like the CSI show where we can do it in five seconds or five minutes, and I think people realize that now," said Mike Medler, director of the Marion County crime lab.

The blood work of baby Delano Wilson and 321 other cases still awaited testing and results.

DNA testing also has a lengthy backlog of cases. While the lab has a goal of turning around results in six weeks, testing usually takes three months or longer.

The scientists can't rush the science. It's complicated and exacting work that must meet the highest standards each and every time without exception -- because lives and futures and freedoms hang in the balance.

In 2014, the Marion County crime lab remained on pace to examine more than 60,000 pieces of evidence. And the police and the public want it right.

"There has been a concerted effort to lean toward us in the investigative side to get an answer. Because they know it saves time, energy, effort. And it can also be a huge part of their case," Medler said.
