Father in custody after bodies of 5 missing South Carolina children found in Alabama
September 10, 2014

Authorities believe a South Carolina father killed his five children before driving to Alabama and dumping their bodies on a dirt road in a rural area.

An Alabama Department of Public Safety spokesman told the Associated Press that Timothy Ray Jones Jr., 32, led police to the site near the town of Camden where the bodies were found. The site was off a two-lane highway, said Alabama Department of Public Safety spokesman Sgt. Steve Jarrett.

Authorities in South Carolina and Mississippi said that Jones has been charged with child neglect and additional charges are expected to be lodged in connection with the children's deaths.

The children ranged from 1 to 8 years old and were reported missing by their mother on Sept. 3, authorities said.

Police have not released details on how the children died. Lexington County (S.C.) Coroner Earl Wells was arranging for the children's bodies to be taken back to South Carolina for autopsies and identification Tuesday night, sheriff's officials said.

At the scene where authorities said the bodies were found, investigators could be seen late Tuesday working in a clearing at the top of a hill lit by floodlights.

Jones was being held in Smith County, Mississippi, awaiting extradition to South Carolina, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said in a news release.

Jones was detained in Smith County on Saturday after being stopped at a motor vehicle checkpoint near Raleigh, Mississippi, and charged with drunken driving, Smith County Sheriff Charlie Crumpton said in a news release.

Crumpton said Jones became agitated when a deputy questioned him about an odor of chemicals coming from the Cadillac Escalade he was driving. The deputy found what were believed to be chemicals used to manufacture methamphetamine and a substance believed to be the street drug Spice, a form of synthetic marijuana, Crumpton said. A sheriff's office investigator was called and found what appeared to be bleach, muriatic acid, blood and possible body fluids, he said.

During a background check, police discovered that Jones was wanted in South Carolina "regarding a welfare concern of his children," who were on a national missing persons list, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.

Investigators from several departments and the FBI started looking for the missing children on Monday, Crumpton said. He said the children's decomposed bodies were found in individual plastic garbage bags.

Jarrett told a news conference that authorities were not sure why Jones drove through Alabama.

Jones had joint custody of the children and is divorced from their mother, police said. They said he told neighbors that he and the children were moving to another state.

Marlene Hyder and her husband, Johnny Hyder, said Jones and his wife moved into a house next to them about seven years ago in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina, 25 miles west of Columbia. They said Jones told them he worked in computers. Two years ago, the wife moved in with a male neighbor and Tim Jones moved away with the children, the Hyders said.

Johnny Hyder said the children were often dressed in dirty clothes and were seen home at all hours of the day because Tim Jones had said he didn't believe in the public schools. Hyder said Jones was constantly looking for a reason to argue and often threatened to call the police. He said Jones approached him with a gun on his hip one day and was angry about something, but Hyder couldn't remember what it was. When Hyder said he was going to call police, he said Jones told him it was only a BB gun.

"It wasn't a BB gun," Hyder said. "It was a real gun. I know what one looks like, but I didn't want to cause any more trouble."

Marlene Hyder said she also remembered a day when one of the Jones' younger children came over to the Hyders' house and tried to drink out of one of their outdoor spigots. He was dirty and disheveled and ran back to his house when she tried to speak to him, she said.

A "no trespassing" sign was posted near the driveway of a house where the Hyders said Tim Jones' ex-wife still lived with the other neighbor.

South Carolina father held in deaths of five children
September 10, 2014

(CNN) — Timothy Jones Jr. told neighbors in South Carolina last week that he was moving his children from their home near Lexington to another state.

On Wednesday, the father of five was being held in a Mississippi jail in the deaths of his children, ages 1 to 8, according to the state’s Department of Public Safety.

“The seriousness of this violent crime is unconscionable,” Albert Santa Cruz, Mississippi’s public safety commissioner, said late Tuesday.

The 32-year-old is being held in Smith County on child endangerment charges and is awaiting extradition to South Carolina for prosecution.

Charges Expected Against Father of 5 Dead Children
September 10, 2014

Authorities expect to charge a South Carolina man in connection with the deaths of his five children after he led them to a secluded clearing in Alabama where their bodies lay wrapped in individual garbage bags.

Timothy Ray Jones Jr. has been charged with child neglect and police expect to lodge additional charges against him, the Lexington County, South Carolina, Sheriff's Department said in a news release.

Jones, 32, is awaiting extradition to South Carolina from Mississippi, where he has been jailed since his arrest Saturday on a drunken-driving charge, Smith County Sheriff Charlie Crumpton said in a statement.

Wilcox County, Alabama, District Attorney Michael Jackson told The Associated Press that Jones is suspected of killing the children in South Carolina before bringing their bodies to Alabama.

Police have not released details on how the children died. Lexington County Coroner Earl Wells was arranging for the children's bodies to be taken back to South Carolina for autopsies and identification Tuesday night, sheriff's officials said.

It also was unclear when the children were killed, how much time passed before their bodies were disposed of, and what motivation Jones might have had to do it.

On Wednesday morning, the dirt road where the bodies had been found — an isolated area between the Alabama towns of Pine Apple and Oak Hill, about 25 miles west of an Interstate 65 exit — was abandoned. Investigators had worked late into the night using flood lights, but there was no longer any sign of vehicles or people. Boot prints and tire tracks were especially prevalent around a pile of dead trees atop a sandy soil hilltop, guarded from view by the two-lane highway.

Dad Accused of Killing His Five Kids Had 'Spice' Drug, Cops Say
September 10, 2014

A father accused of killing his five small children has not said why he allegedly murdered them, an emotional sheriff said today, but the sheriff said the dad appeared "disoriented" when stopped by cops and that they found synthetic marijuana known as "spice" in his car.

Timothy Ray Jones Jr. will be charged with five counts of murder, Acting Sheriff Lewis McCarty of Lexington County, S.C., said at a news conference today. The children ranged in age from 1 to 8.

Authorities also revealed that one of Jones' neighbors made a complaint on Aug. 8 "regarding some type of abuse from the father to the children," a Department of Social Services official said. Officials investigated that day, but found no reason to immediately remove the children from Jones' care. The case was still open and a second visit was expected to be scheduled, the official said.

Jones vanished with the children Aug. 28 from Lexington County, S.C., after picking them up from school and day care the sheriff said. Jones' ex-wife reported him missing, but also told police that he had been unreachable in the past. Nevertheless, Jones and the children were put on a missing persons database.

Jones was stopped at a routine vehicle checkpoint in Mississippi on Saturday, authorities said. "When an officer approached him, he seemed very strange, maybe a little bit disoriented," McCarty said.
A check of Jones' name brought up the missing persons report, the sheriff said.

"They found evidence of cleaning material, material to clean blood... and they saw blood. They saw children's clothes, but no children," McCarty said.

The officers arrested Jones on charges of driving while intoxicated and possession of synthetic marijuana.

"It's called spice," McCarty said. It's also known as K2 and has been implicated, along with other synthetic drugs like bath salts, in a string of crimes and violent behavior.

Jones led police to a dirt road in Alabama where they recovered five garbage bags containing five sets of human remains that authorities believe are the missing children, McCarty said. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

"He has not indicated why he did this," the sheriff said.

Jones is believed to have killed the children shortly after picking them up, McCarty said.

"We feel the deaths took place early on. We're not certain exactly what time, but those deaths came early on in the investigation," he said.

Jones then drove for several days through several states, the sheriff said.

"These children were in the car deceased in garbage bags for some period of time," McCarty said.

Sheriff: S.C. man killed 5 children at same time
September 10, 2014

During a news conference Wednesday, Lexington County Sheriff Lewis McCarty said no motive has been revealed, but officials believe the siblings were killed at the same time.

McCarty described Smith as "calm" as he led investigators to the children's bodies.
"We do feel deaths occurred in Lexington County (S.C.)," McCarty said.

McCarty characterized the bodies as being in an advanced state of decomposition and said the manner of death was not clear.

Jones drove up to North Carolina, then back into South Carolina, officials said. Then he traveled through Lake City and Orangeburg, S.C., then into Athens, Ga., before going to South Carolina and then traveling to Mississippi.

"We feel that he killed the five children at the same time. ... I don't understand why he did it, but yes, these children were in the car, deceased in garbage bags for some period of time," McCarty said.

Sheriff's officials in Smith County, Miss., said Jones waived his right to an extradition hearing, paving the way for him to return to South Carolina late Wednesday to be charged with five counts of murder.

The children's bodies are already in South Carolina. McCarty said he won't release the names until an autopsy is performed, which will determine exactly how the children died. Autopsies are set to begin Thursday.

Mississippi State University confirmed Wednesday that Timothy Ray Jones Jr. graduated from there in 2011 with a degree in computer engineering.

Jones was arrested Saturday in Smith County, Miss., after he was detained at a traffic checkpoint. Deputies reported that he seemed to be under the influence. When they searched his SUV, they found what they believed were chemicals used to make meth and a synthetic form of marijuana, and what appeared to be bleach, muriatic acid, blood and possible body fluids in the car.

There had been a complaint to the Department of Social Services on Aug. 7 about Jones and his treatment of the children. That same day, the Lexington Sheriff's Department and Department of Social Services went to the Jones residence and talked to Jones, the children and neighbors. They didn't find any signs of abuse but were set to revisit the home within 45 days.

Records describe a messy divorce in October 2013. Jones' wife was having an affair with a neighbor, according to the divorce file. Jones was given primary custody, and a therapist called him "highly intelligent" and a "responsible father."

Jones was an Intel engineer and made more than $70,000 a year, and his wife didn't work outside the home or have a driver's license, according to the records.

McCarty called the case unprecedented in his three-plus decades in law enforcement.

"I've never seen a case like this," McCarty said. "We all see things in our career that have an impact on you. This case has impacted anyone ... who's had anything to do with this."

Warrant: SC Dad Feared 5 Slain Kids Would Kill Him
September 17, 2014

An arrest warrant issued for the South Carolina father who authorities say killed his five children says the father thought his children were going to "kill him, chop him up and feed him to the dogs."

The warrant obtained Wednesday by WIS-TV and WLTX-TV said Timothy Ray Jones Jr. ordered his children, ages 1 to 8, out of his vehicle at a Lexington Walmart on Aug. 28.

Authorities think Jones killed his children soon after, put the bodies in plastic trash bags and drove for nine days around the Southeast. The warrant says authorities found blood in his vehicle and handwritten notes about killing and mutilating bodies.
