3 BABIES' BODIES FOUND IN HOUSE FULL OF VERMIN

Friday, September 12, 2014
BLACKSTONE, MA -- A search was underway Friday at a squalid home where the bodies of three infants were found among vermin and piles of soiled diapers, and authorities had not ruled out the possibility that more bodies may be inside, a prosecutor said.

Detectives investigating a case of reckless endangerment of children found the bodies Thursday at the house in Blackstone, about 50 miles southwest of Boston along the Rhode Island border.

BLACKSTONE (CBS) – A woman is under arrest after the remains of three infants were found in a Blackstone home on Thursday. The discovery was made at 23 St. Paul Street during a child endangerment investigation

The gender of the infants and their cause and time of death is unknown. “There’s a lot of work left to do under what can only be described as deplorable conditions,” Early said.

The home is less than a quarter-mile from the Blackstone Police station. Sources tell WBZ-TV’s Kate Merrill they fear more bodies are inside the home.

Blackstone Police have arrested and charged 31-year-old Erika Murray with witness intimidation and other charges in connection to the living conditions at the home. She will be arraigned in Uxbridge District Court Friday morning.

Neighbors say they only thought two children lived in the home, and never saw the three-year-old or six-month-old. “They came out with two babies that we had never seen before, knew nothing about,” a neighbor said.

“Nobody in the neighborhood knew they had more than two children,” another neighbor said.
St. Paul Street was blocked off by police on Thursday afternoon and investigators will likely remain at the scene for several days.

Department of Children and Families Director of Public Affairs Cayenne Isaksen said Thursday afternoon that the search of the home is a part of “an ongoing criminal investigation.”
“The children are currently in the custody of the Department of Children and Families,” said Isaksen.

Blackstone woman held without bail after three infant bodies found in her home
updated September 12, 2014 at 6:33 PM

The children, aged 13, 10, 3 and five months, were removed from the home on Aug. 28 after police responded for a well-being check. They were called by a neighbor when the 10-year-old ran to a nearby home and asked how to get a baby to stop crying.

According to a DCF spokesman, on Aug. 28 members of the Blackstone Police Department filed a report alleging that the children were being neglected.

The Blackstone Police Department returned to the home on Wednesday after getting a search warrant based on their interviews with the older children, said Tim Connolly, a spokesman for the district attorney's office.

Investigators began searching the home Wednesday night and were required to wear hazmat gear due to the state of the home.

"An officer, investigating the interior of the home on Wednesday afternoon, located the body of what appeared to be a newborn baby, tucked into the back of a closet in one of the rooms of the house," police said.

Lawyer Says Mother In Squalid Blackstone Home Horror Is Mentally Ill
September 12, 2014 1:52 PM

According to police spokesman John Guilfoil, state records showed that the two oldest children are Murray’s, but no birth records existed for the two youngest children.

A source told MacLeod that although the two babies have no birth records, it’s believed all four of the children belong to Murray.

Early said one of the children in the house approached a neighbor about a child who wouldn’t stop crying August 28. Early said the 6-month-old was found covered with feces lying on a bed.

Mom from Blackstone house of horrors due in court
October 14, 2014

Erika Murray, 31, of Blackstone, was arraigned last month on charges of fetal death concealment, witness intimidation and permitting substantial injury to a child.

The state Department of Children and Families removed four children ranging in age from 6 months to 13 years from Murray's home in August after her 10-year-old son went to a neighbor's house and asked for help in quieting a crying baby.

The neighbor found a 6-month-old baby covered in feces and a 3-year-old child. After interviewing the older children, police got a search warrant and went back to the house, where they found the remains of three babies. The state medical examiner is trying to determine whether they were newborns or fetuses.

Murray was due in Uxbridge District Court on Tuesday morning for the routine hearing. Her boyfriend was due in the same courthouse Tuesday for a separate hearing on marijuana charges.

Murray's attorney, Keith Halpern, has said he believes Murray is suffering from a mental illness.

Halpern declined to comment on her condition Friday.

No birth records could be found for the two youngest children. Halpern said previously that he believes Murray secretly gave birth to those children because her boyfriend didn't want any more kids than the two they already had together, the 10-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl.

The boyfriend, Ramon Rivera, has not been charged in connection with the discovery of the infants' remains. A clerk at Uxbridge District Court said Rivera does not have a lawyer listed in his file.

The Blackstone Board of Health condemned the house where Murray, Rivera and the children lived and are planning to demolish it later this month. Authorities said it contained piles of dirty diapers, trash and the remains of dead animals.

Prosecutors: 2 Dead Babies Found Had Been Alive
October 14, 2014

Authorities think at least two of the three babies whose skeletal remains were found in a filthy Massachusetts home were alive "for some period of time" before they were found.

A prosecutor said in court Tuesday that both bodies were found wearing diapers and one-piece infant outfits in bags hanging in closets in the vermin-infested Blackstone home.

The details were revealed during a pre-trial hearing for Erika Murray. A judge ordered her held on $1 million cash bail. A prosecutor had asked for $5 million cash bail.

Prosecutors Say Dead Babies Were Found Clothed
October 14, 2014

At least two of the three babies whose skeletal remains were found in a filthy Massachusetts home may have been alive "for some period of time" before they were found, prosecutors said in court on Tuesday.

Both bodies were found wearing diapers and one-piece infant outfits in closets in the vermin-infested Blackstone home, assistant district attorney John Bradley said at a pretrial hearing for Erika Murray in Uxbridge District Court.

Murray, 31, of Blackstone, had been held without bail since her arraignment last month on charges of fetal death concealment, witness intimidation and permitting substantial injury to a child.

A judge on Tuesday ordered Murray held on $1 million cash bail. A prosecutor had asked for $5 million cash bail.

The state Department of Children and Families removed four children ranging in age from 6 months to 13 years from Murray's home in August after her 10-year-old son went to a neighbor's house and asked for help in quieting a crying baby.

No birth records could be found for the two youngest children. Halpern said previously that he believes Murray secretly gave birth to those children because her boyfriend didn't want any more kids than the two they already had together, the 10-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl.

A pediatrician found that Murray's two youngest surviving children, girls aged 5 months and 3 years, had been "profoundly neglected" and "severely malnourished," authorities said.

Murray's boyfriend, Ramon Rivera, has not been charged in connection with the discovery of the infants' remains, but faces drug charges for allegedly growing marijuana in the home's basement. He, too, has a court appearance Tuesday.

DA: Mom in dead babies, house of squalor case faces murder charges
Bodies of 3 infants, animals found in trash-filled home
December 16, 2014

WORCESTER, Mass. —The mother of three babies whose bodies were found amid tons of trash and dirty diapers in a Blackstone home earlier this year has been indicted on murder charges in connection with their deaths, Worcester County District Attorney Joe Early said Tuesday

The father of the children was also indicted on abuse charges and was arraigned Tuesday.

Four children were removed from a Blackstone home after a neighbor alerted authorities of the unsanitary conditions. When officials went to the property, two children were found in the vermin-infested, trash-filled home, and subsequent searches lead to the discovery of the remains of three infants in bedroom closets and several dead animals.

Erika Murray, who was arrested and arraigned in September, was indicted on nine charges including two counts of murder, two counts of assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury, two counts of reckless endangerment of a child, two counts of cruelty to animals and one count of concealing a fetal death.

The father of the children, Raymond Rivera, who had maintained he stayed in the basement and was unaware of the conditions of the children and the home, was arraigned Tuesday on seven new charges, including two counts of assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury, two counts of reckless endangerment of a child, two counts of cruelty to animals and one count of cultivating marijuana. He was held on $100,000 bail.

Early said the children removed from the home -- ages 13, 10, 3 and 6 months old -- were now either staying with relatives or were still in state custody. No birth records for two of the children have been found.

Crews spent days emptying the house of trash, and the building was eventually demolished.

Until now, Rivera had not faced charges directly connected to the case. After a court appearance for a drug charge in November, Rivera said he was unaware of the "inhuman" conditions the children were living in because he was not allowed upstairs.

Rivera will return to court Jan. 14.

Murray was ordered held on $1 million bail at her arraignment in September.

Mother Faces Murder Charges in Babies' Deaths
WORCESTER, Mass. — Dec 29, 2014, 10:10 AM ET

Erika Murray, 31, is scheduled to be arraigned in Worcester Superior Court on nine charges, including two counts of murder.

The mother of seven children ? four living, three deceased ? originally had been charged with fetal death concealment after the remains were found in her Blackstone home in September. She pleaded not guilty to that lower charge and has been jailed on $1 million bail.

A grand jury indicted Murray on the nine counts earlier this month. The charges include two counts of assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury, two counts of reckless endangerment of a child, two counts of cruelty to animals and one count of concealing a fetal death.

Murray's lawyer Keith Halpern has said his client has mental health issues and that there's no evidence she caused the deaths of the babies.

Raymond Rivera, Murray's boyfriend and the father of the children, has pleaded not guilty to seven charges, including two counts of assault and battery causing substantial bodily injury and two counts of reckless endangerment of a child. He claims he lived in the basement and was unaware of the conditions in the rest of the house, a point that prosecutors have challenged.

Rivera, 38, is being held on $100,000 bail and is due back in court on Jan. 14.

Murray's four living children, ranging in age from 5 months old to 13 years old, remain in the custody of the state Department of Children and Families.

Massachusetts mom pleads not guilty to killing her babies
December 29, 2014

(CNN) -- A mother whose infants were found dead amid squalid conditions in her Massachusetts home pleaded not guilty Monday to two counts of murder and other charges.
Erika Murray, 31 showed no emotion as she quietly answered "not guilty" nine times in Worcester County District court as the charges were read out loud.
Besides murder she is charged with neglect, abuse, reckless endangerment, concealing a fetal death and even animal cruelty.
It took police officers in hazmat suits to retrieve the bodies of three infants found in September, amid what police described as filth and squalor at Murray's house in Blackstone, a town on the Rhode Island border.
Four other children belonging to Murray also lived in the home and were removed by the state in September.
Her boyfriend, who lived with her, also charges but not as serious as the murder counts against Murray.
Ray Rivera, 38, was indicted on two counts of assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury, two counts of reckless endangerment of a child, two counts of cruelty to animals and one count of cultivating marijuana.
His attorney has said that he absolutely denies the allegations.
Both Rivera and Murray maintain that he not only never knew about the three infants he fathered that died in his home, he also was somehow unaware of two of the four living children removed from the 1,150-square-foot home.
DNA tests determined that Rivera is the father of all seven, according to CNN affiliate WHDH.

Massachusetts woman neglected children, hid dead babies so boyfriend would not know she had them: prosecutor
Erika Murray, a mother of seven, pleaded not guilty to a slew of charges Monday after police found three dead babies and two severely neglected children in her Blackstone home in September.
December 29, 2014

RICK CINCLAIR/AP

A Massachusetts mother kept her children in a bedroom filled with dirty diapers and vermin to prevent her live-in boyfriend from finding out about them, a prosecutor said in court Monday.

Erika Murray, a 31-year-old mother of seven, pleaded not guilty to nine charges, including murder and abuse, in court Monday after police found the remains of three dead babies in her squalid Blackstone home in September.

Her not guilty plea was the only phrase she uttered throughout the 23-minute arraignment.

"In an effort to hide the babies from her boyfriend, it appears that the (surviving) children were neither nourished nor cared for,'' Worcester Assistant District Attorney John E. Bradley Jr. said.

Murray's four surviving children were found covered in feces, prosecutors said. Her 3-year-old daughter needed to have maggots removed from her ears to hear again, and her 5-month-old child also appeared neglected.

Her two oldest children, ages 10 and 13, did not appear to have been abused, prosecutors said.

Murray hid three dead babies in a closet, prosecutors said. One lived three weeks, Murray told them. All that was left of the third baby was a skeleton with an attached placenta and umbilical cord.

Murray and live-in boyfriend Raymond Rivera did not want any more children after the first two because of financial concerns, prosecutors said.

Yet they continued to have unprotected sex, causing Murray to get pregnant five more times over seven years, according to the Boston Globe. She hid the pregnancies from Rivera and gave birth alone in her bathtub.

Murray trapped the children in an upstairs bedroom and did not allow Rivera to leave the basement, the prosecutor said.

Murray was charged with murder for the first two dead children and fetal concealment for all three. She also faces charges of reckless endangerment, animal cruelty, and assault and battery. Her next court date is Feb. 4.

Murray did not kill her children and is mentally ill, defense attorney Keith Halpern said.

"If she was determined to murder these children, why did they find three corpses and not five?" he said. "It does not make sense to portray her as a serial child killer."

Murray was ordered held without bail after Superior Court Judge James Lemire denied a request to allow her to stay with a relative until trial.

Her oldest children are with relatives and her younger ones are in the custody of the child welfare officials.

Rivera has been charged with abuse and neglect but claims he did not even know he fathered the children. He is being held on $100,000 bail.
