'Gentle giant' to some, suspect in UVA student disappearance dogged by violent allegations
Oct. 3, 2014 | 5:10 p.m. EDT
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr. was the kind of guy who would bust your lip, then regretfully drive you to the hospital. A "cool individual" around other guys, but a bit too "touchy-feely" with the ladies, family friend Rod Brown says.
"He doesn't mean to be creepy; he's just a little off, just a little awkward," says Brown, who's known "LJ" for about 15 years. "If he gets around women, I've never seen it NOT be awkward."
Authorities say Matthew's interactions with women went way beyond awkward.
The former college football lineman and sometime cab driver is in jail on a charge of "abduction with intent to defile" in the Sept. 13 disappearance of University of Virginia sophomore Hannah Graham. Police say forensic evidence also connects the 32-year-old Charlottesville man to the 2009 murder of another college student, which in turn is linked by DNA to a 2005 sexual assault in northern Virginia.
Friends expressed shock that this "gentle giant" — he's 6-foot-2 and weighs 270 pounds — could be suspected of such violence. But court records reveal a man capable of explosive rage, and hounded from one college, then another by allegations of sexual assault.
"It's just a sad story," says Brud Bicknell, who coached Matthew on the Monticello High Mustangs.
Defense attorney James Camblos III has said only that Matthew comes from a "hardworking, blue-collar" family. "Neither Mr. Matthews (sic) nor I are giving interviews at this time. If you're calling about an interview or to chat, do not leave a message," his answering machine says.
Matthew wrestled, played football and ran track at Charlottesville's Albemarle High School. Then in 1998, his junior year, he was transferred from overcrowded Albemarle to the newly completed Monticello High, and his parents separated.
Debra Carr Matthew retained custody of Jesse and his younger sister, Latasha. Court records show Jesse Matthew Sr., with a history of public intoxication arrests and one misdemeanor indecent exposure conviction, was living an hour away in Farmville and owed several thousand dollars in support.
The younger Matthew seemed destined to rise above all this. He became co-captain of the Monticello football squad as a senior, and then enrolled in psychology at evangelist Jerry Falwell's Liberty University, where he suited up as a redshirt defensive lineman for the Flames.

So that would be his mother's grandfather or great-grandfather, I guess.
I also guess that's how he came up with the alias when he was arrested in Galveston.

Statement from Sue and John Graham Regarding the Ongoing Search for their Daughter Hannah October 4, 2014
"My name is Sue Graham. At my side is my husband John. As you know we are Hannah's parents. I will now read a brief statement.Firstly, we would like again to express our enormous gratitude to all those who have been involved in the search for Hannah, including the police, the professional search teams, the people staffing the telephone tip line, UVa students, our friends, neighbours and work colleagues as well as the citizens of Charlottesville and the surrounding area.
We would also like to thank the many, many kind people who have supported our family during this terrible ordeal through words, deeds, thoughts and prayers. We also owe our sincere thanks to the City of Charlottesville, the University of Virginia and the concerned citizens who have contributed a total of $100,000 to the reward which is being offered for information leading to Hannah's return. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of you all.
As you are all aware, an individual has been charged with the abduction of our beloved daughter Hannah. However, despite extensive search efforts, no trace of Hannah has been found since she disappeared in the early hours of Saturday September the 13th, now more than three weeks ago. The police have received thousands of tips, and to each one of you who made the effort to call in with information, we express our heartfelt thanks.
We also thank all of you who have actively searched your properties and reported the results to the police. However, despite all your efforts, Hannah is still missing. Somebody listening to me today either knows where Hannah is, or knows someone who has that information. We appeal to you to come forward and tell us where Hannah can be found. John has already said that this is every parent's worst nightmare. That is true, but it is also a nightmare for our son, James, for Hannah's grandparents and other members of our family, as well as for all of Hannah's many friends here in Charlottesville and beyond.
Please, please, please help end this nightmare for all of us. Please help us to bring Hannah home. Thank you."

Crews Double Resources for Weekend Graham Search
Posted: Oct 04, 2014 6:31 PM CDT
Updated: Oct 04, 2014 8:17 PM CDT
The Virginia Department of Emergency Management says its staff and resources are doubling over the weekend to try to find any trace of Hannah Graham.
Graham, a University of Virginia student, hasn't been seen since September 13. Saturday, more than 100 trained searchers combed wooded areas in Albemarle County looking for her.
All-terrain vehicle teams and canine trackers were out in the far western and eastern parts of the county. VDEM coordinators say a geographic information systems specialist from the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office is now involved to help analyze and organize mapping data from areas they've already cleared.
“Over the last couple of weeks as we've had to move from one area to another, we've developed multiple versions of the planning map, so he's here to help us drive it all to one map and kind of help us collect all of our stats,” said VDEM search coordinator Mark Eggeman.
Search organizers say they're focusing on an eight-mile radius around the city of Charlottesville.
Searchers even used an airplane fitted with a digital camera for Saturday's search. The plane was donated by the Wolford company and the photos will be analyzed by BAE Systems.

Searchers Increase Personnel to Search for Missing Teen
Posted: Sat 8:50 PM, Oct 04, 2014
Desperate times call for desperate measures and as we enter week 3 of the search for Hannah Graham, emergency search crews are orchestrating what they called their biggest search operation they've seen in quite some time here in the commonwealth.
"Currently we have about 110 personnel on scene, we've ramped up to a larger operation for this weekend," said Mark Eggeman of the Virginia Department of emergency Management.
Enforcement officials from Albemarle, Charlottesville, Spotsylvania, Hanover, Stafford and even state rangers among others, pitched in to help with the search.
"We have people on ATV's, we also have two mounted horse teams up here, search and rescue teams trackers and K-9 units," said Eggeman.
VDEM was also grateful for a generous donation from officials in Georgia who are allowing the use of a special aircraft with high resolution picture quality to solidify aerial coverage of search areas that are impossible to do on foot.
"We have two areas of interest picked out, one on the west side of Charlottesville and Albemarle County and another one over the Keswick area tending to the east," Eggeman said.

Does anyone know what time Jesse got home the night of 9/13/14? Just wondering how long it was between we last saw Hannah/Jesse together and the time he got home. Maybe the police could figure out how far he could have gone in that time.

If anyone knows for sure they aren't talking. I do know that the LE said they had narrowed the window of time down some.

Charlottesville Police Chief Relentless in Mission to Find Hannah Graham
Posted: Oct 05, 2014 5:42 PM CDT
Updated: Oct 05, 2014 5:42 PM CDT
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -
Charlottesville's police chief remains relentless in his mission to find missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham.
Sunday more than 100 law enforcement officers from departments across central Virginia joined trained search and rescue teams to scour the county for Graham.
Convoys of police officers and searchers hit the ground running Sunday morning at 8 a.m. to cover rural areas of western and eastern Albemarle County. With hundreds of boots on the ground, investigators are hoping, something will turn up.
Charlottesville Police Chief Tim Longo said, “Every square inch of Albemarle County is being searched this weekend and we're going to find Hannah Graham."
Longo is determined to find 18 year old Hannah Graham. His promise to her parents is his motivation.
"We have to find Hannah Graham. We've made that commitment to her parents, and we're going to honor that commitment,” said Longo.
Law enforcement agencies from across the commonwealth share Chief Longo's resolve.
First Sergeant Mike Berry: Virginia State Police said, "This is a rescue effort. We're here to find Hannah and to bring Hannah home."
About 100 trained searchers and law enforcement officers combed more than 700 square miles of Albemarle County. The terrain isn't easy to navigate, even for the four legged searchers.
"If you have not searched you property, get out this morning and do so. If you have a well on your property, search that well. If you have an abandoned structure on your property, search that structure,” said Longo.
Longo also says he is not calling off any efforts until they find Hannah Graham.

Life outside the computer room beckoned for the past few days. I was hoping that there would be some positive updates that would provide Hannah Graham's parents even a measure of closure. Could it be that there will be a plea deal forthcoming in exchange for the truth regarding Hannah's whereabouts.

Aggressive search continues for missing Virginia student, police chief says
Published October 06, 2014
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Charlottesville's police chief said Sunday that an anguished statement from the parents of a missing University of Virginia student has given investigators fresh resolve to carry on with the difficult search of hundreds square miles of countryside.
Police Chief Timothy Longo said that law enforcement is aggressively searching areas surrounding Charlottesville — many of which are hilly or thick with brush — for Hannah Graham, who disappeared on Sept. 13.
He said he hopes that the plight of Hannah's parents moves anyone who may have information about the disappearance to come forward.
"This young lady disappeared. She was taken. Somebody has to know something. Somebody has to have seen something," he said in a short interview Sunday afternoon.

Chief: Important not to rush missing student probe
October 6, 2014
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Charlottesville's police chief said Monday that it's important not to rush the case against the man accused in the disappearance of a University of Virginia student, despite criticism of some of his decisions.
About a week after Hannah Graham disappeared Sept. 13, Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr. came to the police station to ask for a lawyer. Matthew's apartment had just been searched and while not a suspect at the time, he was considered a "person of interest."
He left the police without being charged and sped away, prompting police to issue an arrest warrant for reckless driving, authorities said.
While Matthew was a fugitive, Virginia police added a charge of abduction with intent to defile in Graham's disappearance, and he was arrested several days later on a Texas beach.
"We caught some criticism when Mr. Matthew walked out that door on that Saturday afternoon. People couldn't understand: 'How do you just let the guy walk out the door?'" Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo said in an interview with The Associated Press. "We made a commitment to honor certain constitutional protections that people have in our criminal justice system, and as frustrating as it is, we want to be very careful to get it right, not to rush to judgment."
At a briefing earlier Monday, investigators asked people who knew Matthew, a former college football lineman and sometime cab driver, to come forward with information so that they can develop a better profile of him. As they did, about 35 people scoured an area of hundreds of square miles surrounding downtown.
Longo said in the interview that the goal of asking for more information about Matthew was to try to figure out areas he may have been familiar with as they assess where to focus their search.
"What are the places where he's most comfortable? ... If you were to take someone against their will, you're going to take them to someplace likely where you're comfortable. You're not going to go out in the dark and hope for the best," he said.
Police say forensic evidence also connects the 32-year-old Charlottesville man to the 2009 slaying of Morgan Harrington, a 20-year-old Virginia Tech student.
Longo declined to discuss the evidence against Matthew or whether he might be charged in the Harrington case.
Asked whether he expects to find Graham alive, Longo said: "Every day that passes is not a good sign. Every day that passes translates more to recovery than rescue. But at the end of the day, we still have to find Hannah Graham."

A Desperate Search for Answers in Hannah Graham Case
Posted: Mon 5:53 PM, Oct 06, 2014
October 6, 2014
After yet another emotional plea from Sue and John Graham, the search continues as officials desperately look for answers in the case of the missing 18-year-old.
This past weekend a high number of officials were on the ground to look for the missing teen, but still nothing turned up.
"You know, every day there is something that points us in a different direction or some information that comes in that is helpful for this case, even the fact that we're knocking on doors asking to walk through properties," said Albemarle County Police Colonel Steve Sellers.
Heading into this week, officials are waiting to get back high-resolution video from planes that combed the area for the past two days, as there are now 35 searchers still on the ground.
"So we've covered a great deal of that circumference with that 8 mile radius, probably up to about 70 percent, we've got about 30 percent left,” Col. Sellers said.
As the search goes on, Sellers emphasized that many tips still come in and he wants people to come forward if they know Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr. in any way shape or form.
"We'd also like people who know him personally, I don't care how long they knew him or how recently, to go ahead and call the tip line and tell us a little bit about what they know about Jesse Matthew," he said.
This past weekend was also the start of hunting season and Col. Sellers said that to his knowledge he did not know of any tips from hunters, but that is something he would follow up on.

Virginia farmer who found remains of '09 murder victim wonders if next grim discovery awaits
Published October 07, 2014

On the morning of Jan. 26, 2010, Bass discovered the skeletal remains of 20-year-old college student Morgan Harrington while riding his tractor to inspect fences on his farm. Harrington had disappeared three months earlier, on Oct. 17, 2009, after leaving a Metallica concert on the UVA campus in Charlottesville. Her badly decomposed remains, which Bass first mistook for a deer, were found 200 yards off a public road on his property, 10 miles outside of Charlottesville, he said.
"It takes a long time to see these things in rural places," Bass told FoxNews.com, noting that his farm consists of open fields as well as heavily wooded areas, ravines and a small mountain. "Morgan went missing in October. It took me till January to find her. Most of southern Albemarle is like my farm."
