October 2009: Lynchburg woman killed

Cassandra Morton, 23, was reported missing in October 2009 in Lynchburg. About seven weeks later, her body was found off a hiking trail at the bottom of Candlers Mountain.

Parts of her decomposed body, including her head, were found scattered, CNN affiliate WSLS reported in 2012, though officials attributed that to animals. A spokesman for the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office said Morton was found under brush as if someone tried to hide the body.

Officials believe she was killed elsewhere, the station reported.

Her body was discovered by a hiker.

Campbell County Sheriff Steve Hutcherson said Tuesday that his office never closes homicide cases. “We follow up on any leads, we have to do due diligence, and we have to leave no stone unturned,” he said, while telling CNN they will investigate to see whether there is a connection to Graham’s disappearance.

The sheriff noted that Morton was reported missing by her parents the same day as Morgan Harrington, a Virginia Tech student whose body was found in January 2010.

“There are definitely some similarities, and it warrants further looking into. We’re going to do everything we can to prove or disprove. … We’ll do more investigations and see where it leads us.”

How easily was DNA taken and tested in Hannah Graham case?

Matthew’s Virginia-based lawyer had little to say about his client when approached this week outside his Charlottesville office.

“I am Mr. Matthew’s attorney,” James Camblos said. “I was hired on Saturday. That’s the only thing that I’m going to confirm at this point. The family and I — nobody is making any statements at this point in time. We might later on, but right now we are not.”

Matthew willingly went to a police station last weekend, along with several family members, walking through the front door and asking for a lawyer, Longo said. There was no warrant for his arrest at that time.

Matthew and the lawyer spoke and then left, the police chief said, giving detectives no clearer picture of what may have happened the day Graham disappeared. Because he has retained counsel, police cannot question him.

Whether Cassandra Morton's case is linked to Morgan Harrington's or Hannah Graham's will require investigation.  Even if they aren't, perhaps looking at her case again will help find her murderer.  Cassandra and her family need answers and deserve justice.

Jesse Matthew arrest prompts renewed look at 2009 Cassandra Morton murder
September 30, 2014

The Campbell County Sheriff's office said Tuesday it is investigating a possible link between Jesse Matthew Jr. and Cassandra Morton.

Morton disappeared in October, 2009. Her body was discovered a few weeks later in a shallow grave on Candlers Mountain.

The Campbell County Sheriff's Office and Lynchburg Police have been looking for her killer ever since. Investigators said their leads have gone cold.

Family of Cassandra Morton speaks about fresh look at her case
October 3, 2014

The family of a murdered Lynchburg woman hopes the disappearance of Hannah Graham leads to closure.

Someone killed Cassandra Morton in 2009 right around the time Morgan Harrington was murdered.

Morton's body was discovered in Campbell County and her killer never found.

Right now there's no evidence that there's a link between Cassandra Moore and Morgan Harrington's murders.

But now that there's been a forensic link between Jesse Matthew, the man charged with abducting Graham, and Morgan Harrington, the Campbell County Sheriff's Office is at least investigating Matthew.

Her body was found in the woods off Camp Hydaway Road near Liberty University.

Jesse Matthew went to Liberty years earlier.

That and his DNA connection to the Morgan Harrington case around the same time is enough for police to take a look at his whereabouts when Morton disappeared.

The Campbell County Sheriff's Office is waiting for financial statements and cell phone records to see if Matthew was in the Lynchburg area when Cassandra Morton went missing.

Despite a lot of evidence being collected, a suspect has never named in Morton's murder.

The Campbell County Sheriff's Office said this investigation doesn't mean Matthew is a suspect, but it's a possible lead they're following.
