BODY COUNT AT 22? Teen satanist Miranda Barbour admits to slaying LaFerrara, dozens of others

Nineteen-year-old satanist Miranda Barbour admits to killing Troy LaFerrara of Port Trevorton. In a prison interview Friday night, she said that she considered sparing his life until he said the wrong thing. She also said LaFerrara was one of dozens of such victims she killed in the past six years.

At 22 victims, "I stopped counting"

Asked Friday night how many people she had killed, Miranda Barbour said through a jailhouse phone: “When I hit 22, I stopped counting.”

She wants to plead guilty to LaFerrara’s murder, and said she is ready to speak with police about her other victims.

“I can pinpoint on a map where you can find them,” she said.

LaFerrara, Miranda Barbour said, was Elytte’s first victim.

The 42-year-old Port Trevorton resident was killed on the Barbours’ three-week wedding anniversary.

Miranda Barbour said she doesn’t care whether people believe her, that she wanted to tell her story to The Daily Item because she wanted to come clean and stop living a lie. She said she felt no remorse for her victims and said she killed only “bad people,” a belief she traced through a troubled childhood.

She said she was sexually molested at age 4 and was introduced to murder at 13, literally in the hands of a man who led her to satanism — beliefs that she said she held at the time of the LaFerrara homicide.

“I feel it is time to get all of this out,” she said. “I don’t care if people believe me. I just want to get it out.”

Satanists: Accused Craigslist killer not one of us
February 17, 2014

(CNN) -  She's not one of us.

That's what Satanists are saying about accused "Craigslist killer" Miranda Barbour.

The 19-year-old told The Daily Item, a Pennsylvania newspaper, that she joined a satanic cult in Alaska when she was 13 and participated in several murders.

Barbour, who has been charged with one slaying in 2013, told the newspaper that she has been involved in 22 killings.

Authorities haven't corroborated her claims, and top Satanists say they have no ties to Barbour or her husband, Elytte Barbour, who is also charged in the 2013 killing of 42-year-old Troy LaFerrara. Police say LaFerrara responded to a "companionship" ad placed by Miranda Barbour on Craigslist.

"According to our records, we have never had any contact from this woman, nor her accomplice," said Magus Peter Gilmore, head priest of the Church of Satan. "It seems to me that she is calling herself a member of a 'satanic cult,' not a legally incorporated above-ground form of satanism."

"Thorough investigation will likely demonstrate that this cult story is fiction," Gilmore added.

Founded in 1966 by Anton LaVey, the Church of Satan is the oldest and largest such body in the United States.

The church's "Nine Satanic Statements" hold that Satan "represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification!"

Like Gilmore, Lucien Greaves, spokesman for the rival Satanic Temple, said his group has no ties to Barbour or her husband.

"Barbour seems bent on displaying herself as prolific murderer and absolute monster, and her 'Satanism' seems nothing more than another transparent effort to aid in this campaign of reverse," public relations, Greaves said.

Just how horrifying that there actually is a Church of Satan?

I am guessing that one would not admit they knew her if what she is saying is true.

Missing persons group 'skeptical' of woman's claim she killed at least 22 people
February 18, 2014

A missing persons group says it is skeptical of a 19-year-old woman's claim that she has killed more than 20 people -- most of the murders taking place in her native Alaska and so many that she "stopped counting at 22."

Seeking Alaska's Missing, a statewide support group for missing people and their families, said Tuesday that it is "skeptical" of alleged killer Amanda Barbour's claim that she took part in the murder of at least 22 people as she traveled south from Alaska to North Carolina and was involved in a satanic cult.

Barbour allegedly told the paper Friday that most of the other crimes took place in her native Alaska -- a claim the missing persons group questions -- and said she took part in the killings as early as 13 years old.

"Based on the research we have conducted, we are not putting much stock into what this woman has claimed. We remain skeptical at this time until further proof is given," the group said in a statement to FoxNews.com. "Our focus at Seeking Alaska's Missing is finding the missing and, unless they have not been reported by a family member or friend, the numbers simply do not match up."

The FBI confirmed to FoxNews.com that it is investigating the young woman's claim, but declined to elaborate further on the case. The agency said in a statement Sunday that its Philadelphia division "has recently been in contact with the Sunbury Police Department regarding Miranda Barbour, and will offer any assistance requested in the case.''

Barbour, originally from North Pole, Alaska, lived in Anchorage and Palmer before leaving the state. The young woman claims she was part of a satanic cult that took her to several other states, including California, Texas and North Carolina.

Barbour could face the death penalty in connection with LaFerrara's murder if she is convicted.

Pa. Craigslist killing suspect says 2 never showed
March 30, 2014

SUNBURY, Pa. (AP) — A woman charged along with her newlywed husband with killing a man she met through Craigslist tells a newspaper that two other men had responded to her ad for companionship but never showed up.

Police say Barbour met 42-year-old Troy LaFerrara, of Port Trevorton, through Craigslist and stabbed him to death in her parked car in Sunbury last November with the help of her husband, Elytte Barbour.
Miranda Barbour claims she previously killed more than 20 people in Alaska, Texas, North Carolina and California. Investigators say they have found no evidence to substantiate her claims.

Craigslist slaying suspect wants confession nixed
Posted May 6, 2014, Updated May 8, 2014

SUNBURY, Pa. (AP) — A woman charged with her newlywed husband with luring a Pennsylvania man through Craigslist and killing him says her confession should be thrown out because she wasn't given an attorney.
Miranda Barbour was in Northumberland County court on Tuesday.
Investigators say she stabbed 42-year-old Troy LaFerrara about 20 times in her parked car as husband Elytte Barbour held a cord tight against his neck from the back seat and then dumped his body in an alley. They have pleaded not guilty.
On Dec. 2 and Dec. 3, Barbour voluntarily went to be interviewed at the state police barracks near Selinsgrove.
The Snyder County district attorney testified Barbour wasn't given a public defender during the interview because she wasn't under arrest or charged with anything.

Judge: Accused Craigslist killer to face death penalty
May 19, 2014

SUNBURY, Pa. — A judge in Pennsylvania Monday denied a request to take the death penalty off the table for a woman who has claimed responsibility for nearly two dozen murders across the country.

Judge Charles Saylor ruled this morning that the jury will be permitted to consider torture and robbery as aggravating factors that could justify the death penalty for Miranda Barbour in the November 2013 stabbing death of Troy LaaFerrara of Port Trevorton, Pennsylvania.

Barbour, 19, and her husband, Elytte Barbour, 22, are both charged in the case. Elytte Barbour also faces the death penalty.

Edward Greco, a court-appointed defense attorney, argued that an autopsy report does not support an assertion by the Northumberland County district attorney that the killing was committed by means of torture.

LaFerrara was stabbed up to 20 times, Northumberland County Coroner Jim Kelley said.

Couple Plead Guilty in Man's Craigslist Killing
August 26, 2014

A newlywed couple charged in the stabbing death of a stranger they lured through a Craigslist ad offering companionship pleaded guilty to murder on Tuesday and face mandatory sentences of life without parole.

Miranda Barbour, 19, and Elytte Barbour, 22, had previously pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges that carried a possible death penalty upon conviction. They changed their pleas to guilty of second-degree murder at what was to have been a routine status conference in Northumberland County Court in Sunbury.

The Barbours married in North Carolina and moved to central Pennsylvania about three weeks before they met up with the victim, Troy LaFerrara, when he accepted her offer of companionship in exchange for money.

Miranda Barbour picked up LaFerrara at a mall in Selinsgrove on Nov. 11 and drove in her car to Sunbury, a small city about 100 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

After they parked, Elytte Barbour came out of his hiding place under a blanket in the back seat and held a cord tight against LaFerrara's neck while his petite wife stabbed the 6-foot-2, 278-pound man about 20 times. They dumped his body in an alley.

Elytte Barbour later told police the couple killed LaFerrara, who was 42, because they wanted to kill someone together.

The Barbours are scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 18 in Northumberland County Court, said a law clerk for Judge Charles Saylor, who's handling the case.

Miranda Barbour's lawyer did not return messages seeking comment Tuesday.

In April, Miranda Barbour gained fleeting national notoriety when she said in an interview with Sunbury's The Daily Item newspaper that she had killed at least 22 other people in Alaska, Texas, North Carolina and California over six years as part of her involvement in a satanic cult. But checks by police failed to substantiate her claims.

Northumberland County District Attorney Ann Targonski said Tuesday that the guilty pleas were the best possible outcome for the victim's family. Had the Barbours been sentenced to die, she said, "this matter would have dragged on for many, many years."

At the court hearing, LaFerrara's widow wept as the judge questioned Miranda Barbour about her plea. His sister, Holly LaFerrara, said the family was satisfied with the double plea deal.

"Our primary goal has been to ensure that the two killers never get out of prison," she told The Daily Item. "They will remain dangers to society as long as they live."

Judge calls ambush murder ‘heinous,’ sends Craigslist killers to prison for life
September 19, 2014

SUNBURY, Pa. – The Pennsylvania couple who lured a stranger to his death with an online companionship ad were sentenced to life without parole Thursday under a plea bargain agreement that allowed them to escape the death penalty.
Judge Charles Saylor described the ambush murder as a “heinous crime (requiring) your permanent removal from our community and society.” He said the victim “had no idea what was about to happen to him simply by a Craigslist posting.”
Prosecutors agreed to allow Elytte (22) and Miranda (19) Barbour to plead guilty to second-degree murder a month ago in the stabbing-and-strangulation slaying of Troy LaFerrara, 42, of Port Trevorton, Pa., last November. The victim had answered the wife’s online ad promising companionship.
The Barbours confessed to police they wanted to celebrate their recent marriage with “the thrill of murder.” Miranda also told a reporter for the Sunbury Daily Item in a jailhouse interview in April that she had committed at least 22 other murders in several states as the member of a satanic cult.
Miranda said nothing at the Thursday sentencing in Northumberland County Court. But her husband apologized to the victim’s family. “I regret taking this man from his home,” he said. “I hope they can find it in their heart to forgive me for my sins.”
The victim’s sister, Holly LaFerrara, rejected the notion of forgiveness. She described the Barbours as unworthy of compassion.
“They have no conscience, no remorse and no moral compass,” she said. “They lack the most basic element of humanity. These are two fundamentally flawed people who are rotten to the core."
Judge Saylor took note of Miranda Barbour’s shocking statements about being a serial killer even though authorities have thus far connected no other murder to her.
“Your conduct has drawn a lot of attention to you,” he said. “I have no real basis to accept the sensationalism or to act on any of these extrajudicial statements that have been reported. The facts of record (LaFerrara’s murder) are difficult enough to comprehend.”
