Ex-cop wife-killer accused of plot to murder prosecutor
Michael Winter, USA TODAY 5:28 p.m. EST February 9, 2015

Serving 38 years for murdering his third wife and suspected in the disappearance of his fourth, former police sergeant Drew Peterson was charged Monday with trying to hire a hit man to kill the Illinois state attorney who prosecuted him.

The 61-year-old Peterson, who has been in the maximum-security Menard Correctional Center since his 2012 conviction, is accused of soliciting someone to murder Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow between September 2013 and December 2014, the Illinois attorney general and the Randolph County state's attorney announced. He is charged with one count of solicitation of murder for hire and one count of solicitation of murder.

Inmate says Drew Peterson claimed to have dumped Stacy Peterson in Lake Michigan
Posted 10:08 AM, February 25, 2015

RANDOLPH COUNTY, Ill. — A letter sent to former Drew Peterson Attorney Joel Brodsky, from a prison inmate, claims that Peterson once told a mutual cellmate that he “dumped Stacy Peterson is in Lake Michigan.”

The letter, one of two sent to Brodsky, also states that Peterson was “set up” by the authorities when he was charged with being involved in a murder for hire plot of Will County State’s attorney James Glasgow last month.

Adrian Gabriel told Brodsky that his cellmate had once mentioned to Peterson he could help him take care of Glasgow. Although, he claims Peterson initially laughed it off, Gabriel says Peterson approached the man soon after about the subject. The cellmate was transferred and an investigation began.

The letter also stated that there are FBI recordings of the plot.

Peterson will appear in court on March 3, in Randolph County.

Sheriff’s Office outlines Peterson guidelines
Media and public to be included in separate courtroom lotteries
Posted Feb. 27, 2015 at 3:37 PM

The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office released the “People v. Drew Peterson Court Operational Plan” on Friday.

The plan is intended to establish rules and guidelines for both media and the public in regard to Tuesday’s 10 a.m. preliminary court appearance for Drew Peterson at the Randolph County Courthouse.

“We’ve been working in conjunction with the Attorney General’s office to develop a plan for the large amount of media that usually follows this guy,” said Randolph County Sheriff Shannon Wolff during Friday’s meeting of the Randolph County Board of Commissioners. “We’re weren’t hoping to do a lottery for the preliminary hearing, but (the attention) is picking up steam.”

Drew Peterson Pleads Not Guilty in Murder-for-Hire Plot
CHESTER, Ill. — Mar 3, 2015, 5:15 PM ET

Drew Peterson, a former suburban Chicago police officer convicted of killing his third wife and suspected in his fourth wife's disappearance, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to trying to hire someone to kill the prosecutor who helped put him in prison.

Peterson's feet were shackled as he waived a preliminary hearing in the court in Randolph County in southern Illinois, near the Menard Correctional Center where he's serving time. He was charged in February with soliciting an unidentified person to find someone he could pay to kill Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow.

Circuit Judge Richard Brown also granted Peterson's request for a speedy trial, meaning he would go to trial within 160 days or by July 28. Randolph County State's Attorney Jeremy Walker said the state would be ready by July 13.

Prosecutors were prepared to present evidence to the judge Tuesday, but Peterson's last-minute waiving of the hearing kept them from doing so.

"Basically, we don't want this case being tried before a jury is ever impaneled," said Lucas Liefer, Peterson's attorney.

The state filed a notice Tuesday disclosing that the case against Peterson twice involved use of eavesdropping devices, though it did not provide details.

At the state's request, Brown barred defense and prosecutors from publicly revealing evidence to protect an informant.

Drew Peterson to stand trial in July in murder-for-hire plot
Posted: 04/14/2015, 08:06am

CHESTER, Ill. — Drew Peterson, the former suburban Chicago police officer charged with trying to kill the prosecutor who helped put him in prison for his third wife’s death, is scheduled to stand trial in southern Illinois this summer.

A Randolph County judge on Tuesday set a July 6 jury trial for Peterson. The ex-Bolingbrook police sergeant is accused of enlisting another prison inmate whose identity has not been disclosed in a murder-for-hire plot to kill Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow. Peterson is accused of soliciting an unnamed individual between September 2013 and December 2014 to kill Glasgow, who personally prosecuted Peterson for Savio’s murder. Peterson pleaded not guilty in March.

Circuit Judge Richard Brown on Tuesday also approved a request by prosecutors to keep the taped prison conversations between Peterson and the unidentified informant under seal before the trial to avoid influencing potential jurors. Defense attorney Lucas Liefer didn’t oppose the request.

Brown set a hearing for late May to consider three motions submitted by Walker.

One asks the court to allow prosecutors to cross-examine Peterson about his first-degree murder conviction should he choose to testify. Another seeks permission to discuss a 2003 attempt by Peterson to pay someone $25,000 to “take care of” Savio. The third seeks to limit discussion at trial about the details of the confidential informant’s own first-degree murder conviction.

Brown has already barred the defense and prosecutors from publicly revealing evidence to protect the informant.

Drew Peterson’s Murder-Conviction Appeal Aired In Courtroom
May 21, 2015 7:42 PM

Peterson, 61, also faces charges in an alleged murder-for-hire plot to kill Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow, who prosecuted the 2012 case. A trial is scheduled for early July in southern Illinois.

On Friday, a Randolph County trial judge will review a request by state prosecutors to allow cross-examination of Peterson, should he choose to testify. The court will also consider a request to discuss a 2003 attempt by Peterson to pay someone $25,000 to “take care of” Savio. A third motion to be considered seeks to limit discussion at trial about the details of a confidential informant’s own criminal history.

Judge grants Drew Peterson request for new trial date in murder-for-hire case
Published May 22, 2015

CHESTER, Ill. –  A southern Illinois judge has granted Drew Peterson's request to delay his trial on charges that former suburban Chicago police sergeant plotted to kill the prosecutor who helped convict him in the death of his third wife.

The Randolph County trial was scheduled to begin July 6. But Peterson's lawyer said Friday in a brief hearing that the 61-year-old ex-Bolingbrook officer needs more time to prepare.

Prosecutors didn't oppose the request. The trial is now set to start Aug. 28.

Drew Peterson: Four wives, a death and a disappearance
Updated 10:40 AM ET, Wed July 1, 2015

Watch Jean Casarez's CNN Special Report, "Married to a Murderer: The Drew Peterson Story," Saturday at 6 p.m. ET/PT.

(CNN)—If you thought wife murderer Drew Peterson was done with the legal system, think again.

Peterson is now accused of trying to murder -- from behind bars -- the prosecutor who put him there. This summer, he's scheduled to be back in a courtroom, this time on two counts of murder solicitation.

Stacy Peterson is still missing.

Peterson is appealing his conviction as he prepares to encounter Glasgow again.

His trial for one count of solicitation of murder for hire and one count of solicitation of murder is expected to begin in August.

The possibility  Drew Peterson tried to arrange a hit on Prosecutor Glasgow from prison doesn't surprise me.

Drew Peterson's Murder-for-Hire Trial Again Delayed
CHESTER, Ill. — Jul 7, 2015, 4:58 PM ET

Drew Peterson's murder-for-hire trial has again been delayed as the former suburban Chicago police officer seeks to enlist an expert witness to review taped conversations with an unnamed prison informant.

Peterson was scheduled for trial next month in southern Illinois on charges that he solicited another prison inmate to kill Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow, who prosecuted the 2012 case in which the ex-Bolingbrook sergeant was sentenced to 38 years in prison for the 2004 bathtub drowning death of Kathleen Savio, his third wife.

On Tuesday, Randolph County Circuit Judge Richard Brown agreed to delay the trial until Nov. 13 to give both sides more time to prepare. State and local prosecutors didn't oppose the request by Peterson's court-appointed attorney.

"I don't believe anybody thinks this case is going to be ready for trial (in August)," said Jeremy Walker, the Randolph County state's attorney. The county is home to Menard Correctional Center, where Peterson is imprisoned.

The trial initially was scheduled for July, then got pushed to August. The move to November is the second time it's been delayed.

Drew Peterson defense argues wiretaps should be tossed
August 27, 2015

Several irregularities surrounding wiretaps in Drew Peterson's murder-for-hire case — including a key eavesdropping consent form listing the wrong defendant's name — could put the recordings in jeopardy, according to newly filed court documents from Peterson's attorney..

In a motion filed this week, Peterson's attorney alleged that prosecutors made mistakes in how they got the recordings and questioned why a Will County judge met with a jailhouse informant nearly three weeks before authorities asked him for permission to record conversations between the informant and Peterson. The filing also claims that the investigation was tainted by a conflict of interest because of the involvement of prosecutors who work for Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow, the target of the alleged plot.

Peterson's attorney, Lucas Liefer, declined to comment. A hearing will be held on the motion Tuesday.

Peterson, 61, has a tentative trial date of Nov. 13. If convicted of the solicitation, he could face 60 years in prison in addition to his 38-year sentence for killing Savio.

The solicitation charges came nearly two years after Peterson railed against Glasgow moments before his sentencing. In that 40-minute rant, Peterson accused the longtime prosecutor of spearheading the "most extensive, expensive and obsessive investigation probably known in the United States."

Peterson is appealing his murder conviction.

Peterson attorneys argue motions
Posted Sep. 1, 2015 at 6:08 PM

As the Nov. 16 Drew Peterson trial date slowly approaches, attorneys on both sides of the murder-for-hire case argued pretrial motions on Tuesday during a hearing at the Randolph County Courthouse.

Peterson, 61, is alleged to have attempted to orchestrate the killing of Will County State’s Attorney Jim Glasgow from behind the walls of Menard Correctional Center in Chester.

The court was closed to the public and the media for more than an hour as counsel for the defense and prosecution argued over “A people’s motion to admit relevant evidence of Peterson’s conduct and other acts evidence.”

Circuit Judge Richard A. Brown granted defense attorney Lucas Liefer’s request to close the court as the publication of the subject matter could affect potential jurors.

In open court, Brown heard arguments on several motions, including a defense motion to suppress evidence as it relates to eavesdropping.

The parties will be back in court on Sept. 29 at 9 a.m. to discuss one, possibly two more motions yet to be filed by the defense. If needed, a date of Oct. 2 was set aside as well.
