WSJ Reporter Goes Missing in New Jersey: David Bird Has Been Missing Since He Left His New Jersey Home Saturday Saying He Was Going for a Walk

http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304603704579323214133075556

Quote
Mr. Bird's wife, Nancy Bird, said the couple was putting away Christmas decorations Saturday afternoon when Mr. Bird put on his red rain jacket and said he wanted to take a quick walk before an expected rainstorm. He left the house at 4:30 p.m. and didn't take his phone.

Ms. Bird said her husband had been feeling under the weather with a gastrointestinal virus. He was starting to feel better, and she wasn't surprised that he wanted to get some fresh air.

Their usual destination for a quick walk in the neighborhood is Hicks Tract, a wooded area near their house.

Police began their search there when Ms. Bird reported him missing a couple of hours after he left. By that point, it was raining heavily.

"I knew this wasn't right. Something was wrong," she said. "He's a really great dad and a really great husband."

The couple has two children, ages 12 and 15.

Mr. Bird is a liver-transplant recipient and takes medication twice a day, though he didn't bring it with him. His wife said he could become ill without the medication.

Missing Wall Street Journal Reporter's Credit Card Was Reportedly Used In Mexico

A 55-year-old Wall Street Journal reporter went missing in New Jersey on Saturday, and sources tell NBC News that his credit card was used in Mexico on Wednesday night.

Bird's family thinks his disappearance may be tied to his reporting on the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, or OPEC, according to NBC.

Bird covers energy markets for the Journal and wrote about OPEC often, but it's unclear why his family believes his disappearance might be tied to his coverage

Rather strange that family would believe his job could be the reason why he is missing. Of course his credit card being used in Mexico is an even stranger twist.

Authorities Comb New Jersey Woodland in Hunt for Missing Reporter

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/17/nyregion/hundreds-search-for-a-missing-wall-street-journal-reporter.html?hpw&rref=nyregion&_r=0

Chief Michael Mazzeo of the Long Hill police said on Thursday that at this point no criminality was suspected. Chief Mazzeo said the search initially focused on the trails and paths Mr. Bird was known to wander and has turned to a treacherous area of swamp along the Passaic River.

“We have searched every tract of land possible in our township,” he said. “Now we’re checking outlying areas off-road that he may have used as a cut through.”

The rural area where he disappeared includes the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, and people do get lost in and around the 7,768-acre preserve. Last week alone, he was among three people reported missing in town. He is the only one yet to be found, Chief Mazzeo said.

Last spring a woman was reported missing and three days later stumbled out of the Great Swamp, where she had become lost, the chief said.

He added that it was easy to do, even for those familiar with the area.

“It’s not uncommon for people to go into the Great Swamp, hunters, and all of the sudden it gets dark and their cellphone doesn’t work and the battery on the GPS they were using dies,” he said. Mr. Bird did not have a cellphone with him.

I know this area well, it is very wooded. I used to date girls in my younger days from Gillette & Basking Ridge, NJ which is right in this area. Have spent much time walking and hiking in the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. It is massive and if some one got disorientated, that would not bode well.

FBI joins search for missing Wall Street Journal reporter David Bird

The FBI is assisting in the search for missing Wall Street Journal reporter David Bird, who was last seen leaving his northern New Jersey home more than a week ago.

Barbara Woodruff of the FBI's Newark office confirmed to FoxNews.com that the agency is helping the Long Hill Township Police Department locate Bird, who disappeared Jan. 11 after leaving his Morris County, N.J., home to go on a short walk.

Woodruff said the FBI was assisting in the hunt for Bird, but said the Long Hill Township Police Department remains the lead agency in the case. She declined to elaborate further on any details of the investigation.

Hmm, wonder why the FBI is involved?

Body Found in N.J. River Not Far From Where Reporter David Bird Vanished

A body was pulled from a New Jersey river not far from where Wall Street Journal reporter David Bird vanished more than a year ago after leaving his home for a walk. The remains recovered Wednesday by dive teams in the Passaic River -- about a mile from one of Bird's favorite walking spots -- have not been identified or tied to the vexing case of the missing energy journalist.

The possible development came on the same day that Bird's wife Nancy launched a new website appealing for help in finding her husband. A family spokeswoman said she had seen an announcement about the body by the Morris County Prosecutor's office but had no further details.

Authorities pulled an unidentified body from a New Jersey river near the site where Wall Street Journal reporter David Bird disappeared over a year ago, according to a report.

Dive teams retrieved the body from the Passaic River on the border of Morris and Somerset counties Wednesday, about a mile away from one of Bird's favorite walking spots, according to NBC News.

Bird, then 61, vanished after leaving his Long Hill Township house for an afternoon stroll in January 2014. The energy reporter did not take his cell phone or the medication he needs to take twice a day to prevent his body from rejecting a liver transplant.

David Bird's wife Nancy never gave up trying to find him.  Although he's been found, I believe she will be grieving for him all over again.  The not knowing must have been terrible, but the finality has to be brutal.  Rest in peace David.
