Police seek help locating UC Berkeley student who went missing near USC

March 29, 2015

Authorities and concerned family members are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a 19-year-old college student who went missing near USC early Saturday.

Eloi Vasquez, a student at UC Berkeley, was last seen about 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the 600 block of West 28th Street, where he was attending a party with friends. Vasquez left the party, telling friends he was going to take a walk, and never returned, according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Vasquez didn’t have money or identification on him, according to police. Friends unsuccessfully tried to contact him Saturday morning.

Vasquez is described as a 6-foot Latino male with black hair and brown eyes. He weighs about 175 pounds, police said. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, gray pants and white tennis shoes.

$50K Reward Offered by Family of Missing UC Berkeley Soccer Player Last Seen Near USC
March 29, 2015

The family of a 19-year-old UC Berkeley soccer player who went missing after attending a fraternity party near the University of Southern California offered a $50,000 reward Sunday night for information leading to his whereabouts.

Eloi Vasquez was last seen about 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the 600 block of West 28th Street (map), according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Vasquez told his friends that he wanted to take a walk and left the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity house, according to LAPD and a statement from UC Berkeley’s athletic department.

He did not return, the LAPD release stated, adding that Vasquez had no money or identification with him at the time.

The last call he made was to a friend in Berkeley, according to his mother.

“He was telling her he was in trouble and scared and lost and didn’t know where he was,” Wendy Margolin said.

According to Margolin, her son had been upset about an injury that had sidelined him from the current soccer season, but he appeared to be recovering from that disappointment.

The family had urged him to spend part of his spring break with friends at USC.

After his disappearance, they drove all night Saturday from Northern California to help with the search.

The university’s athletic department issued a statement about Vasquez’s disappearance on Facebook shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday.

“As you may have heard, one of our student-athletes, Eloi Vasquez, a 19-year old freshman on our men’s soccer team, has been reported missing,” the statement read. “Eloi is a wonderful young man who has excelled both academically and athletically here at Cal. We are all very concerned for Eloi’s safety.

Mother pleads for help finding son, a Cal soccer player
March 30, 2015

The mother of a UC Berkeley student missing in Los Angeles pleaded for the public’s help Monday in finding her son, a Cal soccer player.
Eloi Vasquez, a 19-year-old freshman, was last seen leaving the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity house near USC early Saturday. He told a friend in a cell-phone call that he had been drinking, that he was lost and in trouble and was thinking about walking to the beach, his family said.
His cell phone later went dead. Friends said he didn’t have his wallet or identification with him.

Classes at UC Berkeley resumed Monday after students were off for spring break.
In a statement, Cal Athletics officials said, “Eloi is a wonderful young man who has excelled both academically and athletically here at Cal. We are all very concerned for Eloi’s safety.”
Vasquez went to a party at the fraternity with soccer-team friends Friday night. He was last seen leaving the fraternity at 631 West 29th St. in Los Angeles about 1:30 a.m. Saturday.
He called his friend Aurora Cardenas in Berkeley at 1:57 a.m., telling her that he was lost and asking her to come and help him. Cardenas said she had urged him to call his friends who were with him at the party. The two spoke for about 12 minutes.
He called her again at 2:19 a.m., but the call got disconnected.
Vasquez has been to the Los Angeles area before but this was the first time he had visited with friends, his mother said.
Margolin said her son has gone to parties in the past but knows his boundaries. “He’s an athlete, and he’s very careful about partying too much,” she said. “He goes to bed early and wants to stay in shape for his athletics.”
Margolin said her son, a graduate of Marin Academy in San Rafael, had injured a ligament in his left leg during practice, which prevented him from playing this season.
“It was hard for him at first, but he’s a very strong-willed and disciplined person,” Margolin said. “He has the attitude that he can come back from it and be even stronger than before.”

Missing UC Berkeley Eloi Vasquez student found dead near USC

 Updated 16 mins ago
LOS ANGELES (KABC) --
The missing University of California, Berkeley student Eloi Vasquez was killed in a car accident Saturday morning near the University of Southern California.

A coroner identified Vasquez as the person found at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday on the eastbound 10 Freeway near Vermont Avenue.

On Friday, Vasquez, a freshman soccer player, drove down to Southern California with friends for a spring break trip. That night, he attended a party at the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at USC, but left after telling friends he wanted to go for a walk. He is believed to have been drinking.

About an hour later, he called a friend from school saying he was at the beach and needed help.

When Vasquez did't turn up the next morning, a search effort was launched and a $100,000 reward was offered for information about his whereabouts.

RIP Eloi. I was hoping he would be found safe. Why do these kids think it's okay to drink then take off on their own. Prayers for his family & friends. an angelic monkey
